Proximity can't turn off screen when covered - LG Optimus 4X HD

I installed a couple of apps for this, like Smart cover https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=smart.cover, and Proximity Smart Cover https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danielling.proximitysmartcover . Basically I want when the proximity is covered (case closed), the screen goes off, and then goes on when it's uncovered. These 2 apps can do the 'wake' part alright (wake screen when the proximity is no longer covered) but they can't seem to turn off the screen when it's covered. I granted both admin permission. Here are some clues:
_ My proximity sensor is working alright (checked through hidden menu, and it does turn off the screen when proximity covered in-call)
_ Tap tap app can work (touch/wave 2x to lock, same to wake)
So any idea why those 2 app can't work? Thanks in advance.

I use Smart Screen on my Note II with the following settings:
Basic - everything blank (no ticks in the boxes}
Prox - Blank
Sensor - Blank
Start/Stop - Disable in landscape
This works for me and I have not noticed any battery drainage problems.
Please note: I have stock 4.1.2 and no lock screen enabled (my phone never leaves my sider.
This is not my ideal setup as the screen will immediately sleep if i hapren to accidently go to close. I need to pull down the notification menu at the far left or right of the screen. I have tried to play with the delayed reaction settingsand have had contact with the developer about the situation.
I am however happiest that as soon as i open my wallet case the phone is ready for use.
Quick and easy with one hand

Tried calibrating both in hidden menu and in app, but still there. But using another app, Smart screen off pro, fixed it. Guess it has to be with a different mechanism.

not proximity sensor
I have had the same problem on my 4X but the problem isn't the proximity sensor. I have tried various other apps including orientation and brightness locks. These haven't worked either, I have tried to change lock screen settings and screen time out but these haven't worked. Does anyone have any other suggestions or solutions to this problem?

I use "smart screen off pro" with no problems, all is working as expected....

what lock screen, brightness and permissions settings do you have on your phone other than what is changed within the app?

OK, I dont use a lock screen, never tested if its working...
My settings (checked):
Basic:
- Start on Boot
- Hide notification messages
Start/Stop
- Disable when in Landscape
- Enable only when in Launcher (not necessary, if u want it allways to turn screen off leave unchecked, I want Screen on in Apps, so I checked it)
Vibration:
- Vibrate when screen turned off
Thats all...

Proximity sensor issue - can't end calls when screen doesn't wake!

Ever since my 4x HD was new I've noticed a problem, but it's getting so annoying now I finally thought I should do something about it, and I've contacted LG with a view to sending it off for repair:
When I remove the phone from my ear the proximity sensor usually fails to wake the screen back up, meaning I have no controls to end the call with. Occasionally swiping my finger over the sensors at the top of the screen wake it up, but mostly it takes several attempts, and presses of the screen lock button.
SO annoying when you are leaving someone a voicemail and it's still recording, all they hear at the end of the message is the muffled swipe of a finger and me muttering and swearing at the phone as it carries on recording for another 30 seconds or so!!
Anyone else have this issue??

Mine doesn't awake in the end of calls too... but I thought it was normal
We have an option where we can use "Power button" to turn off calls...
I didn't knew that the proximity sensor was suppose to wake up the disply...
Hi Rudeas,
Glad it's not just me!
Where is the option to use the power button to end calls?

Maybe a really daft question, but I presume you haven't put a screen protector on that covers the sensor? Stone of the cheap protectors do and that would stop it working properly.
Good thinking, but no, I don't have a.screen protector or anything over It.
To test and eventually to calibrate the proximity sensor, you can use hidden menu (dial 3845#*880#) -> Device Test -> All Auto Test Menu Full -> ALC / Proximity Test.
You can even test the "auto brightness mode" (to test also the light sensor) and "enable proximity wakeLock" (to simulate a call).
To test the sensor just put a finger near the sensor.
There is also a "Calibration" feature to calibrate the sensor if needed.

Wow italianquadcore! That is amazing! Firstly I could see by putting my finger over the sensor how poorly it was working. Often it wouldn't notice I had taken my finger away- then I pressed calibrate, and now it notices instantly, every time!!
Thanks loads, I'm assuming it's fixed now!

Thanx a lot, yah it was a screen protector giving trouble to sensor.
Hi everyone.
I've just bought myself P880 as well. But had the same problem as author. However, the fix to calibrate via hidden menu didn't help at all. My sensor doesn't react at all, however, when I am using a hardware test it shows sensor is present.
Do you think there is something wrong with sensor itself, or there might be some android might have failed to initialize driver?
Thanks in advance!
Mine wasn't fixed by the calibration for long. It soon got worse again, I actually damaged my headphone socket (using a really big headphone plug through an 3.5mm adapter, then accidentally knocking it) and ended up buying a new part from etradesupply.com for about £17. The headphone socket is the same component that contains the proximity sensor, so replacing that fixed it.
I had phoned LG, but as I had bought my p880 from german amazon they said they wouldn't have covered me even if it had been a warranty problem (So much for Europe being somehow unified!) so I had to risk taking my phone apart myself!

It works with V20A without any problems (just tested). Please check if you disabled something, regarding hidden menu or some other related items, in app management.
Thank you italianquadcore!
That solved my issue as well...

Yea this happens to me too. I just use Hardware Disabler to stop the proximity driver. So the screen never turns off in a call until the screen time out. And you can turn it back on by pressing the power button. Keep in mind though, that app makes the phone laggy...it's annoying at times, but less annoying then waiting on people to hang up or leaving them a long voicemail when they don't pick up
Turn on the proximity sensor
The proximity sensor on V20a is disabled by default. you can enable it by going into the secret menu and your problem will be solved.
Dial 3845#*880# ---->Device Test ---->All Auto Test Menu-Full --->ALC/Proximity Test --->Enable the proximity sensor here
Done

[Q] Proximity Switch off

Hi -
My screen was not getting on after making the call so I wanted to check the service menu. I typed *#*#7378423#*#* and accessed the calibration menu and selected Proximity sensor menu.
It showed Autoscreen Brightness On and Proximity Switch OFF. I switched Autoscreen Brightness off (other wise the calibrate option is grayed out) and tried to calibrate the proximity sensor. I got the error -99 and the message that it cannot be done.
1. How do I switch on the Proximity sensor on
2. Will the calibrate option work if the phone is factory reset (there is a message which says - Pls factory reset the phone before calibrating).
Thanks in advance.
I'm tired of this bug too, got first one replaced (yellow tint, black screen + backlight on, proximity sensor) but I still have this sensor bugged, I have to stop the "power button ends call" option because of that!

I found that the switch gets turned on when I place my finger near the Proximity Sensor :silly:
But the screen still does not dim when answering the call nor does it come on again once the call is finished..

Broken proximity sensor

Well, after an accident, my Nexus 6 was dropped to the ground.
And because of that, there were some cracks on the screen.
It is still functioning and usable, but the proximity sensor is no longer working.
The spot in the screen where the proximity sensor is located, it is badly cracked/scratched.
Because of this, during phone call, the screen goes blank and there is no way I can turn it back on.
Sometimes, I need to do something during phone call, like pressing the keypad button.
Is there any solution or workaround to this via software / app? Because I don't want to spend any money replacing the screen.
Probably 3rd party dialer app which can disable the proximity sensore?
Or toggle the screen on / off using volume button ...
Or any other way ...
Thank you.
