Hi Friends,
If you have been using a Samsung Omnia Pro or Omnia II for a while, you know what a pain in the *** is the Samsung's SMS/MMS application, also known as jinbox. This application is dead slow and takes huge amount of memory if left running. Almost 99% of the people I have seen want to get rid of it somehow.
In the past, some developers, including me, have released various fixes for this problem. For example, my Omnia Messaging Switcher application, which lets you switch between the native SMS system as well as Samsung messaging system. But all these utilities fail at one thing or another. You have to choose between either having faster, native SMS app and loosing MMS capability or keep both SMS and MMS functionality and take the pain of using that monstrous app.
Now here is a solution to all of your problems!
This small cab will install following fixes on your phone :
1. Your messaging application will be switched to Native Windows Application. The "Message" shortcut will point to this, and there will be a separate shortcut named "Samsung Messaging" for accessing the Samsung sh*t if you still want to use it for some reason.
2. In the SMS account, on clicking New, you will get 2 options instead of one: SMS or MMS. On creating SMS, the default Windows Native SMS composer will open just the way you like it. On creating MMS, the Samsung composer will open, without loading the whole Samsung Messaging App. The MMS sent and received by you will be perfectly visible in Sent Items/Inbox and perfectly editable/viewable, even in the threaded messaging view.
3. The E-Mail shortcut's icon will change to a better looking one and if you are on default settings, tapping it will show the list of email accounts to choose from.
All in all, it will seems to work just like it should smile.gif Let me know if you guys face any issues. Its working as it should on JC2/JE2 default and my custom roms, at least on my phone.
MissedIt!
Text-based notification widget for missed calls/SMS/e-mails/apps
Link to the app on Google Play
Get information about the number of missed calls, unread SMS, unread e-mail messages and notifications from virtually any application a glance with this simple yet very customizable widget. You can use it with any lockscreen replacement app to access all this information without need to unlock your phone.
Missed It! must be enabled as an Accessibility Service to be able to receive application notifications ('Settings » Accessibility » Accessibility services'). If enabled and application notifications not detected, try disabling and then re-enabling.
Requirements
Android version 2.2 and up.
Features
Reports number of missed calls, unread SMS and pending voicemails.
If you use Gmail or K-9 Mail, you can obtain the number of unread messages of each account individually. In the case of Gmail, you can also select which label to monitor.
Also reports notifications from any application that uses the notification bar to report events (including WhatsApp, Tweetdeck, e-mail clients, etc).
Customization of font and background color and transparency. Also font faces (can use fonts stored in external SD card) and styles (bold, italic, underline).
Customization of the layout (alignments, margins, etc).
Text messages can be customized to show whatever phrase you want.
Represent numbers as text.
Resizable widget on ICS. With previous Android versions, there are multiple widget sizes available (user can select which sizes appears in widget list).
-- PERMISSIONS USED --
READ_PHONE_STATE, to get the voicemail state.
CALL_PHONE, to directly call to voicemail if there is any pending message.
This looks promising! I wanted TxMissed to break into two lines, and you've got that going on here already. I'll give it a try!
Edited to say - it would be nice if the background could be made transparent, if it can be, I'm not sure how to do it. I do like that it only shows the pertinent info, right now I have one missed text, and that's all that shows. It would be nice if the number of missed itens could be spelled out, like 'one txt missed', rather than '1 txt missed', or am I also missing how to do that, too?

You can. Go to the appearance settings and click on "color" under background, and when the color picker comes up, drag the alpha slider over to the right. Alpha is the level of transparency. Farther to the right, you'll get zero transparency, while the left is more opaque.
Does anyone know how I can get this app to check my TweetDeck notifications? Is it even possible?
Tested Gmail support. The notification works but after checking my Gmail MissedIt! constantly force closes. Stock 2.2 Samsung Captivate I896.

It doesn't say anywhere that it supports TweetDeck so I would assume that it doesn't so far.

Currently you can't. But I think it could be possible in a near future using the notification abilities of ADW.Notifier.

The help shows all the parameters the application currently supports.
To all of you getting problems with the email, the application may not be querying the correct account. I will post today an updated version to fix this.
BTW, can you send me an extract of the logcat showing the error?
Edited: To temporarily disable checks on email account, go to Appearance, disable the Default output format and edit the Custom format to delete the [mails] parameter from the string. The application will know that we are no interested in that information and will not check for it.

seems working but havent tested intensively yet. some comments:
1) it doesn't display the messages until the event happenned? ie, it will only show "1 missed call", but nothing when there isn't any missed calls?
2) is it possible to enable starting the relevant apps (call log, default sms app, default email app) when we click on the message?
It's finally in the making! What I've been looking for for quite some time now.. Awesome! Definitely following this.

OP, nice work. If you want help and (hopefully) would consider open sourcing it, I can get you some new features added
New version published
I was assuming that the first account returned by AccountManager was a Gmail account. If you was getting a FC when trying to get unread e-mails, please try this new version.
And now a question. Currently the application only handles the first gmail account returned by AccountManager. In the case of having multiple Gmail acounts on the phone, how do you prefer this to be handled? Let the user select what account to use or add the possibility of handle all of them? Please take in consideration that the last option will undoubtedly increase not only the complexity of the code, but also the UI, so before taking any action on this, I need to know if users will consider this option interesting.
Tired of putting down your Android tablet to check a new SMS on your phone? Me too. Cloud SMS is run on both your phone and tablet to allow you to send and receive SMS messaging from your tablet.
Built for speed and privacy, Cloud SMS works over the Internet, does not require bluetooth, does not share (or transmit) your contacts, and even hashes your account email for added security. Typical messages take about 100ms to transmit.
Cloud SMS is available now in the Google Play Store for only 99 cents!

Added New Permission - Read Phone State - Used to detect incoming phone calls
I am a very active developer and continue to address issues and implement features. Below is a full list of permissions, and what they are used for, along with a note for people using GoSMS and other third party SMS apps.
Required Permissions
Internet - (Needed to connect to the Internet!)
Send SMS / Receive SMS (These are used on the phone side to send/receive messages)
Get Account (This is used to read your gmail address assigned to your device. I never actually send this email, simply make a secure hash of the account to match against the Google Cloud Messaging IDs for your tablet/phone)
Wake Lock (This is required for Google Cloud Messaging)
Receive SMS (This is required to capture SMS messages to send to your tablet)
Vibrate (If your tablet supports it, I can vibrate/light LED, make sound just as your phone does on SMS - This will become a setting)
Read Contacts (This is used on the tablet to show the contact photo / name rather than just the phone number of the recipient/sender. This data is never stored anywhere).
Write SMS (This is used on the phone to add your messages to the stock SMS database to keep conversations properly synced)
Receive Boot Completed (This is used to automatically start on boot if enabled in Settings)
Access Network State (This is used to determine if you've switched to mobile or wifi to ensure you are re-synced)
Access WiFi State (This is used to determine if you've switched to mobile or wifi to ensure you are re-synced)
Read Phone Status (This is used to detect incoming phone calls to tell you that your phone is ringing if Phone Call Notification is enabled)
Read Call Log (This is used to read caller information so that the caller ID and photo can be shown in Phone Call Notification)
Using Go SMS? Do this:
In Go SMS, Under 'Menu -> Settings -> Advanced -> Receive Settings' - Uncheck the box that says 'Disable other message notification'
If still not receiving forwarding messages, reboot.
Using a MIUI Rom? Do this:
In the MIUI messaging app go to "settings" and make sure "System MMS app priority" is unchecked.
Any comments, questions, or feedback?
Working great, thanks.

Will work with any 2.2+ tablet and phone. Just noticed the OP said Nexus 7 and changed it.

I'm preparing 1.0.2 to address this reported issue. I had to add two permissions, one to get wifi state, and the other for mobile network state.
Now when a network change is detected, the update service will kick off to re-register your device.
Works well on my Nexus 7, Thanks.
Before I go to bed, two new additions for tomorrow:
Sent message status indicator - Yellow = Sent to phone, Green = Received and processed by phone
Automatically update cloud ids on network change
Time for sleep.
Works nice!

I'm currently just working out a way to support MMS and keep with my security design parameters. For MMS to work, I would have to upload the MMS content to my server, and download it on the Tablet side. Likely I'll just assign some random 64 bit name to any uploaded files, and once the tablet has received the file, delete it from the server. 64 Bits of random naming should be enough entropy over the alphabet and numbers to make any attempts to grab a file en route pretty impossible.
This feature will come once I'm sure it follows my design guidelines (and lots of testing)!

The persistent notification feature is working as I intended, but it doesn't seem to be what people wanted. This feature when disabled allows you to dismiss notifications, but they do show up on all events.
I'm testing a change (and rename) for that feature called Always Show Notifications. This will do as you expect, allowing notifications to briefly show on new message, and automatically dismiss themselves (5 second delay) if you leave the setting unchecked. Should this delay be longer?
I'll be testing this through the day before I make an update available to ensure Android doesn't try to close the app down without notifications running.

For SMS and the like, do you use the official/stock messaging app or Google Hangouts?
Nether, I use YAATA. There is quite a bit to choose from.
I use Chomp or Textra, many more options to configure including delayed sending(if you notice you are sending to wrong person) & ability to choose multiple recipients(group text) simply
I used hangouts on my LG g2 for ages, but I haven't missed it yet on the z3c yet..... But I've only had the z3c a week haha.
Anything you guys don't like about the stock msg app in particular? Or is it mainly that the others have more options to tweak?

I do like having a few more options but mainly I like dark themes and third party messaging apps offer those.
I use Textra myself, been quite happy with it thus far, enjoy the customization options in terms of LED and notification bubbles and sounds that you can customize per contact.

I was a fan of Textra early on. However, I don't understand why they continue to use their own database for sent messages. They used to only keep sent messages in their database thus preventing you from doing backups. They now copy sent messages from their database to the Android database so backups and restores work fine. If you don't mind the extra space used it is a good app. I guess they do it for performance though I don't see any difference between their app and other messaging apps.
I have a group of 50 people, and sometimes i need to send an sms to all of them.
Stock sms app cannot fulfil the job and does not have an option to keep contacts in groups after sending messages.
I have to use handcent instead.
By the way, if anyone knows a decent sms app that can overcome android sms/hour limitation please give me an advice.
Thx in advance!

What ROM are you running? I have seen that setting in CM12. I don't believe it's an Android limitation but rather a ROM setting.
Stock 4.4.4.
I don't have the courage to install a custom rom
Ok I had this before on my nexus but cannot remember how I fixed it.
I get an sms and it shows in notification but when I open the sms there are no text in the message. It just disappears.
And it happens in Hangout and Messenger.
What's the main sms process ? Want to see if I force stop and clear data if it will fix the problem
Thanks Rudolph
Does anybody know why this happens? I have the same issue but am not sure how to fix it.
Would really appreciate the help
Same issue here. Nexus 6 on Android N.
I have Hangouts as the default messaging app.
When I receive a text message, a heads up notification pops up but when I open hangouts the message is gone.
I also tried to switch to the Google Messenger app. In this case I can receive texts but I cannot send them...
Textra seems to work fine but it's not my cup of tea...
Anyone knows how to fix this, please?
Now it's getting even weirder.
It looks like whatever SMS I delete in Hangouts or Messenger gets restored after I close and reopen the app...
It looks like that whatever I do in Messenger or Hangouts goes nowhere and does nothing.

This is why it is an alpha build and not really meant for day to day use.
Same issue here.
I searched old threads, and found there is a solution, just reboot to safety mode, and send a sms to yourself. Then reboot to normal...
However, it doesn't work for me.
I have just found what may have caused the issue (at least in my case) and it was entirely my fault.
I basically dirty flashed the N alpha on top of my previous 6.0.1 installation where I had made quite a few changes, instead of doing a clean installation.
That plus the fact that some SMS/MMS things have now changed in M (for example the telephony databases are no more stored in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony but are now under /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony ) may have messed up my system.
I've now done a clean installation and all seems to be fine with SMS in Hangouts for the time being.
Other small annoyances (mainly related to the cellular data connection) also seem to be gone now.
The SMS issue reappeared after some time (i.e. Incoming text messages are shown in notifications but they are not saved in Hangouts or Messenger).
After having done all sort of different tests, it looks like the issue may be related to a language setting.
The Android N alpha allows you to set two languages under Settings > Language & input > Language.
- With just one language enabled, all is fine.
- With 2 languages enabled, Hangouts and Messenger seem to work ok for some time, then the disappearing-SMS bug comes back. The only workaround I could find is to disable the second system language and reboot the phone.
