Does doing a full wipe and flash not format all partitions except recovery? Why then is my phone unlocked after doing it one time?
What do you mean by unlolcked, do you mean Carrier Unlock? That would be very odd. If you mean lockscreen, it formatted your settings.

1) the first time you flash via usb with odin or helmdal, you are overwriting the boot and recovery partitions. the recovery partition includes CWM, that allows you to flash from zip files on the sd card.
depending on which file and method you are using on subsequent flashes, the boot and recovery partitions may be the same or updated.
2) There can be scripts in the system that copy some files to temp folders during the flash and then return them to folders after flash. for example, if you flashed gapps, take a look at the shell scripts in system/add-on.d folder.
the script references files in the several folders in the system partition and restores them after flash.
are you talking about unlocking your phone, as in use any carrier for phone/data service?
or unlocking as in gaining root and using superuser?
or unlocking as in screen unlock?
or what?

The same reason you don't lose IMEI when flashing a rom.
It doesn't format EFS

Thank you Ben this is the answer I was looking for,
To clarify for others in the simplest manner:
I 1 click ODIN to Stock, I download a rooted update.zip, I reboot to stock recovery, reinstall package's. I am now rooted. I download "Galaxy S Unlock" carrier unlocker app from the market, I use it and root to get the code, I put a SIM in and enter the code. Phone is now carrier unlocked. I download clockworkmod recovery , then I rename that to update.zip and I reboot and reinstall packages, then I reboot to my new recovery, then I flash CM 10.1, then I boot into CM 10.1, phone is STILL unlocked.
thanks for clarification.
some of the files in my efs folder did change when I went from KK4 with Corn kernel to cm10.0, but the IMEI and nv.bin files did not. I think the partition scheme in JB may require that the efs partition get reformatted on that first upgrade to JB, so the upgrade script has to preserve those efs files and then move them to new efs partition. once on JB partitions, the efs folder isn't touched on update.zip flashes.
I moved from kk4 to cm10.0 on Dec 3rd, and that is the creation date shown on my efs files. it hasn't changed since then - I am on 4.2.2 nighties now.

I have just ODINed to KK4 with bootloaders, then flashed Corn kernel, then CM10.1 and my phone appears to still be unlocked. So this must be it.

Hey forum, pretty much a noob (not even 10 posts) I would like to get off my stock AT&T Gingerbread rom (KK4 2.3.5) and I keep looking through the posts for a lil explanation, can't find any. So I'm hesitant to flash roms without properly knowing what is actually going on within. Essentially I would just like to test the water first by rooting so I could get rid of the AT&T crap, and possibly progress to a full-on custom rom. If there are any devs, or passers-by that could assist, I would be more than grateful.
I suppose comparing it to regular PC terms would help best, as i feel I am somewhat savvy with PC's.
Root can be acquired through the [APP]SuperOneClick, or gained through [MOD] FuguRoot: root _any_ stock SGS ROM safely (froyo, GB) or by means of Flashing a Custom Rom (all have Root). See this 【Guide】How To flash Captivate ROMs from Stock (inc. Gingerbread ROMs) or U could flash a Developer's Kernel that has the CWM Recovery baked in and the option to install Root through said recovery (Corn Kernel is one that is based on KK4. I recommend v6.03 because it is very stable).
And be sure to read the Stickied Threads View attachment 868387 in the Captivate General, Q & A, and Delelopment Forums. That will prove to be most helpful.
Very cool. Now i suppose I'm being a pansy about this, but you seem pretty knowledgeable; if (rather when) I take the plunge to a new rom, will that wipe the whole card (which is where I'm assuming that the system is mounted), including any apps that I have gotten, and/or erase the SIM card (I hope not)?
Yes it wipes apps, although those aren't stored in /system they're in /data but a full wipe ROM will clear data. Use titanium backup to backup your apps, move contacts to Sim card or backup to your gmail.
It will not touch your Sim card.
When I attempt to root using SOC it locks up at step 7 (shell root), it freezes. Of any assistance, I look at my task panel, it runs 2 instances of adb.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Use the FuguRoot method or just use Odin3 v1.83 to flash the .tar v6.03 of Corn Kernel. The .tar file goes in the PDA slot of the Odin.
Open Odin 1st, Select the PDA tab, Navigate to the .tar kernel (that u sould have downloaded) Connect ur phone to ur pc in Download mode and once Odin recognizes it, select Start. Kernel will get installed and phone will reboot. Afterwards use button combo to get into CWM Recovery (hold volume up and volume down and power button at the same time until u see the att splash screen then release the buttons). U r now in cwm recovery and can install root from there. Look under Reformatting, tweaks and more. There u will find the option to install root.

4-2ndtwin, I would like to verbally thank you, in addition to the "digital" thanks given already, I'm running the Corn Kernel right now, and from what I can see, it's a re-packaged KK4 with CwM to allow installation of root from the Bootloader menu. Now what I'm wondering, is what is the difference between the available kernel's for i897 (Captivate), more specifically those running the 2.3.5 kernel, e.g. corn kernel is re-packaged and does not have VooDoo sound, in PC terms could that be equated to a specific driver for the sound processor vice a generic driver included in the kernel?
Secondarily, just prior to appying root, I backed up everything using Nandroid, is that essentially a 1-to-1 image of what's on the rom?
Third(arily) , does Ti Backup save apps in such a state that I can move the .apk's to my pc desktop, install a custom ROM w/wipe, and re-install the apps as if they were there the entire time?
I appreciate any help.
Voodoo sounds is kinda like that, its a module compiled in the kernel that allows the tweaking of audio levels by the user with an app called voodoo control.
A nandroid is a system image yes, but it is not 1 for 1. They do not contain kernels or modems. Just the firmware and user settings and stuff. So, if you were to flash a different ROM, you would have to flash back to what the backup was made on, then restore the nandroid and it'll be like you never flashed anything.
Tibu backs up the apps and their data top a folder in your sdcard called "titanium backup" just move that whole folder back and forth and it'll work fine. Hell you can even put that folder in a different phone and restore those backups
The reason I was inquiring about Voodoo sound is (call me crazy) the volume reference has gone up a few notches since Froyo i.e. the lowest earpiece volume is twice what it was with Froyo. It's too bad there isn't a "Patchable" kernel that one could add that into.
I hate to admit this, but I always get confused at the term SD Card, as i usually think of dynamic storage that can be removed, not a static, soldered-to-mainboard storage that it is. So if I got a ROM that wiped the entire static storage, wouldn't I also lose the backups that Nandroid made?
Sdcard reffers to the /sdcard partition on the internal sdcard.
A ROM does not wipe this partition, that's where they are flAshed from, it can't wipe itself from existence and still continue the flash.

You are better off flashing a stock rom or Darky's 10.2 (worked for me)
Once on the stock rom google "backing up EFS/IMEI"
Once you have backed up your EFS folder flash the rom of your choice.
If you stay you are you have the chance that your carrier will block your phone as well as the possiblity of random apps downloading from Google Play

ok, read this install root explorer and try deleting EFS folder and reinstall ROM as mentioned or you can get a EFS Folder to overwrite it first from My Android Collections than reinstall ROM...BUT First REad and get a firm understanding what are the options
The other method is to use a z3x box or spt box to correct the IMEI
But First powerdown, pull out Battery, SIM CARD, and EXT.SD card, press power button for a minute, than powerup without SIM and Ext.SD Card....
Tips before Flashing:-
Backup all your important files, contacts, SMS, game data, images etc to PC or Ext SD card. or make Nanadroid Backup If you have CWM
Backup your EFS Folder to PC or Ext SD card
Enable USB Debugging on Phone. Touch menu>Settings>Applications>Development>
Charge your battery to more than 50% before you attempt any sort of flashing.
Disable Samsung KIES when using Odin. Kill Kies.exe, KiesTrayAgent.exe, & KiesPDLR.exe using Task Manager on PC
Use only ROM and solution for your model and Wipe x3
I tried to delete EFS folder, and reflash, nothing happened.

After upgrading my phone to CM 10 and installing ROM Manager 5.0.2.1 (which
includes Clockworkmod Recovery 6.0.1.2), I had a problem in that nothing could be
installed because the SD card was not being mounted.
There was no way of downgrading Clockworkmod Recovery because nothing would
get installed.
After numerous methods, I solved this by paying for the premium version of ROM Manager.
Once that was done, I got the option of reverting back to an earlier version of Clockworkmod Recovery from
within ROM Manager. I chose (arbitrarily) version 5.0.0.0 and now the problem has gone away.

Weird, I did the same with the free version, downgraded to 5.2.something (that I had working before) and its working correctly.
In summary: DO NOT INSTALL THE v6, usb mounting does not work... yet
CWM 6 working ok for me.I can install roms etc , but I can't mount SD to use on PC
But if you're making a backup on CWM6 and you want to restore on CWM5 it won't work. The backups in CWM6 are a lot smaller and diferent from previous vers

Actually, you can change the way that CWM recovery backs up your system so in fact maybe by changing the back up method, you can restore CWM6 back ups on CWM5. This includes difference compression methods, file type, etc
Just FYI, you don't have to buy Rom Manager Premium to downgrade your recovery image. The 'free' way would be to inject it into a kdz file and extract AP and CP binaries then flash with SFT.

Guaranteed method for IMEI restore is flash back to stock GB (no bootloaders), flash Corn kernel to get CWM, repartition the phone to match what you had (CM10.x, flash twice the same file), then restore your OS backup. You don't need to reboot the phone or setup the new CM installation, just restore your backup right after repartitioning.

Hey guys,
hope someone can help. I had a screen crack 2 weeks ago. I was on Alexndr CSD2 DBT with TWRP. So I have a full TWRP backup. Sent it to Samsung. These smart asses reflashed my phone without any need of doing so. On arrival it was on stock with funktional LTE Sim connection.
So I checked OEM Unlock, went to download mode and flashed TWRP. Went to TWRP and formatted everything and restored ALL partitions of my backup. On reboot my PIN was not accepted anymore - this is not concerning, I am willing to reinstall all by hand. But I lost IMEI/baseband - so deleting the key files I can enter the phone but I have no DATA connection via SIM anymore.
So I reflashed stock CSD2 .... no IMEI.... so I restored EFS only .... boot loop.
I installed CSD Alexndr fresh and restored EFS only .... no IMEI
Wtf is going on? Any ideas I can fix this without sending it back and starting all over and maybe getting stuck again?
Thnx
Peter

Thank you, tried it, did not change the situation unfortunately. He says I think it was included in the rom anyway.
Hmm, if you installed the rom again to install the modem- that's not what I meant.
Alexndrs rom makes a backup of your efs; Find the post and see what you have type in twrp terminal.
Then try the modem flash, solely.
I had the same issue, but it was fixed with modem flashing; however, everytime I reinstall a rom I need to do a separate modem flash.

Hey thanks for your answer.
I flashed the BL...zip solely and also tried to restore EFS and baseband partition only, besides trying full stock odin flash and full TWRP restore with all partitions.
I read:
"EFS restore command (TWRP -> Advanced -> Terminal):
gunzip -c /external_sd/.backup/efs/efs_recent.img.gz | dd bs=4096 of=/dev/block/sda3"
I did, it flashed it and still the same problem. This was the SD from my S8plus. I didn't know Alexndr is overwriting EFS backup every goddamn flash. So my old EFS backup says Aug 2018 - so it is of my S8plus. And the recent one got overwritten by the few flashing attempts. So the rom did overwrite EFS backup I suspect.
So I maybe left with the TWRP backup of EFS only. Why is it not working, to restore the EFS TWRP backup - it should have all data cause it was done when the phone was running well? Is there a way to restore EFS/IMEI/Baseband from that backup? I dont understand how baseband gets lost while having full TWRP backup?

It's not bl file you flash. Also, that terminal code is for recent , which , i think is a backup of efs now flashed, not the one you had prior to the flash. Meaning, check for the efs- backup. That file is hidden on your external sd card.
In theory, that's what I suppose as well but it didn't work for me either- restoring via twrp.

Yeah, I know, I just had the file open and quoted wrong. It is
gunzip -c /external_sd/.backup/efs/efs_backup.img.gz | dd bs=4096 of=/dev/block/sda3
The command worked to restore the EFS but since it is the backup of my S8plus IMEI is still not recognized....
Initialization via SmartSwitch returned that the device is not supported...great.
So the only backup I have is TWRP. I need a way to rescue from TWRP. Since full resore ends in broken IMEI I may be screwed since a full restore should render the phone running but it is not for whatever reason. I am disappointed that the full TWRP backup doesnt seem functional to backup and restore EFS.
Is efs formatted the proper way?
I had also wiped clean everything in twrp.

I wiped all available partitions and restored again. Unfortunately still no change. No LTE no IMEI.
You have to check whether or not the format , ex. Ets4 or whatnot, is what is needed for efs to operate
Did you fix it?
No, I am stuck.
There is only a way to format System - which I did. Nothing changed.
I tried to odin flash CSD2 to have the phone update on its own to CSDE to maybe gain baseband on this update. But no luck.
