I installed the JB OTA updated and lost root, couldn't get it back for anything. I proceeded to FXZ back to .246 and somehow bricked my Bionic. I;m using RSD Lite 5.7 and the VRZ_XT875_6.7.246.XT875.Verizon.en.US_CFC_01.xml.zip FXZ file. I get to step 6/21 and it fails every time. it says "Failed flashing process. 6/21 flash cdt.bin "cdt.bin" -> Phone Returned FAIL.
Am I permanently bricked? Any Ideas? Thanks guys.

Identical to a thread I already have going Sadly no one seems to have a solution yet. I'm hoping that if we get a FXZ file for JB that we can unbrick - but I have no clue where such files come from our how they're created - so looks like a waiting game.

Power the unit off. Then hold VOL UP and VOL DOWN at the same time and then hold the power button for a second or two. You should get a menu. I believe the first value is normal boot. Press VOL UP when "normal boot" is highlighted (or press vol down until its highlighted then press vol up). Your phone should then boot into JB unfortunately you'll still be without root but you'll be back in the game with a phone that you can at least use.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me. I just get a blank screen after the moto logo pops up. I think I will have to wait for a JB fxz.

if fastboot writing "fastboot flash failure" then you need to recowery fastboot. I'm using script for changing boot animation he will correct this stuff.
Try this. put your sd card in a friends phone and upload the JB system update zip file to your sd card then put it back into your phone. Can you press and hold both volume keys THEN press power while holding the up down volume keys. instead of normal boot go down to recovery and press volume up to select it. Moto logo will apear then blank screen the the red triangle android. once that is on the screen hold both up down volume buttons again. at this time a menu should pop up and you can scroll down to system update from zip and load the JB zip file from your sd card. This is how I loaded JB on my phone. Hope things work out for you.

What do you mean? I can't FXZ anything right now, I've tried all end in failure. I think its because of the new security level of the JB update. I think I'll have to wait for a JB FXZ. Haven't seen one yet.

Tried that, didn't work. It failed as well. I think my system files are totally bunked up.
You might be screwed. I know in the past that you would brick your device if you tried going backwards from ICS to gingerbread. I assumed the same would apply in this situation as well. If you have insurance, you may want to drop your phone in the toilet.

You're stuck till you get home bro. You have to use FXZ files to get back to stock.

When you are at the triangle with the android, hit both volume buttons to bring up the menu. From there, you can try:
Wiping data/cache again.
Reflashing a ROM by hitting "Install update from SD card"

when I do that it worked but what i flash has to be signed. I have no way to turn off verification. any signed roms out there I can install
wipe data/factory reset is the only option
Ok if you can get into fast boot i think you are ok but you have to use
R3L3AS3DRoot and 43V3R root for the BIONIC v2.1

follow the instructions to get back to stock with or with out root its your choice
im not really sure what these outther guys are talking about but the bootloader is locked you can only flash the stock signed rom from fastboot after that you can install bootstrap or rom manager.. let me know if this works

DEAD battery
i had the almost exact thing happen to me,,,, but the battery died and it wont engage charging..... so am i gonna have to get a new on or find some fast way to charge it? i cant even try any of the previous examples :/
I've heard of Verizon charging batteries for people but I've never tried it. There is a USB hack to charge batteries but you also run the risk of destroying your battery in the process. If it was me i would pick up an extra battery and charger, always nice to have.

Droid 3 is Bricked
I used Pete's One Click to root phone, achieved root, unrooted, and generally had no problem. I installed Bootstrap, removed it, then installed Safestrap. Then I tried to use Pete's One Click again to try to unroot the phone. It said I could not use it on this phone. I tried it again, it started working, completed step one and then it went into a bootloop, past the twin core and into the red flashing Droid beacon and then repeat.
I read the boards, I downloaded Pete's Droid3 OTA 5.6.890 OneClick.zip and I believe I did it all correctly. My battery was charged, I got to fastboot and the following occured:
erasing userdate...OKAY
erasing cache...OKAY
sending "recovery" (9216 KB> ... _ (flashing)
And it stopped! I let it sit for hours, I retried, I emailed psouza4, he was responsive, suggested I post problem here. Help please, Thanks.
Do you have the updated drives on your computer? I'd hunt down the freshest ones and try re-running the unbrick script.
Drivers are up to date
Believe I have the latest drivers, been fooling around with my phone using different programs and never had a driver problem. Used MyPhoneExplorer to link phone to laptop, PDANet to tether and no problem. Thank for your suggestion.

Did you remove safestrap before you unrooted the phone (i.e., from the safestrap app on the phone, tap the button to remove recovery)? If not, you may have two bootstraps on the phone?
Not sure, believe so
I am not sure on this. I remember opening Safestrap and having two choices. I believe one of them was remove recovery and I believe I did this, then tried to unroot. But, if I assume I didn't and I assume I have two Safestraps on there, is there a solution? Thanks.

Already tried that
I thank the above posters for their suggestions but I already tried and described above what you are suggesting. I did download two versions of Pete's SBF routein and it did not work. That was why I was seeking further help.
There's only one Pete's SBF?? Did you try RSD Lite?
Got unbricked
Despite multiple efforts (an e-mails to Pete) the .bat provided in the suggestions above stalled after step 1. I finally figured out that I could download 906update.zip (230,242 kb) to my computer, place it on my SD card using an adapter (does not matter where you place it) and then placed SD back into the phone. I pushed power button down as well as the up and down vol buttons with the power buttons at the same time to get to the Boot Selection menu, pressed the down volume key, then the up key to go into recovery. You get the green robot and an ! in a triangle, hold power button and vol buttons in and down vol to "apply update from sdcard". Let it run and was fine.
if anyone knows of a post that describes the use of the items under the Boot Menu such as BP Tools et cetera, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm glad it worked, but I don't want anyone to read this and think your button combos are exactly correct. You need...
Boot with X+Power
Push volume up and down simultaneously when at the triangle screen
Use volume keys and power to confirm selections in stock recovery
Thanks for clarity
Thanks for the above. I was going from memory.

I'm freaking out because mine is stuck on the black screen too... I was trying to flash the XML file for Fastboot. and it just went blank (blackscreen) can someone please help. I don't know if letting the battery die is the way to go? I have it connected to a laptop at the moment. I know they said that the XML file takes a whille, but it has been an hour. I do not have any warranty as this was a trial unit given to me.
I'm not that much of a Noob, but I'm not sure what to do at this point. <<<<---- Fixed using Volume down and Power to do a "battery pull" Although I almost Removed the battery physically.
Can you still boot into the unsafe system?
If so, is the unsafe system currently ICS or Gingerbread?

ICS leaks are not fastbootable.AFAIK, unless you just meant that you were trying to fastboot flash to 6.13.219 before flashing to ICS. Either way, here we go.
Go into safestrap, safe mode menu, then disable safe mode, and restart your droid. I am assuming you at least went into safe mode before trying to flash. If so, this is why we love safestrap...makes sure you have a working OS. Let it boot up. Did it work?
If not, don't panic, there is still another solution, even if you didn't safestrap your unmodified OS (just make sure you do this next time!)
If you did backup and safestrap saved you, ignore this block below for now.
Code:
[LIST=1]Download [COLOR="Red"]VRZ_XT894_6.5.1-167_DR4-1_M1-219_1FF_01[/COLOR].
You might already have this if that's what you were trying to fastboot to. It's 1.18GB in size.
Download is here: sbf.droid-developers DOT org/cdma_maserati/VRZ_XT894_6.5.1-167_DR4-1_M1-219_1FF_01.xml.zip
(change DOT to . Can't post links yet.)
[*]dl.dropbox DOT com/u/76950573/RSDLite5.7.msi Download RSDLite and install it.
[*]Download the Droid USB drivers:
motorola DOT com/Support/US-EN/Support-Homepage/Software_and_Drivers/USB-and-PC-Charging-Drivers
Install them. [COLOR="SeaGreen"][B]RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.[/B][/COLOR]
[*]Turn your phone off.
Hold the two side volume buttons down together, press and hold the power button down.
Hold all 3 down until you get to the bootloader.
Press volume down to get to "recovery", press volume up to select it.
You'll see a sick looking android/red triangle icon soon.
When you do see him, press both volume buttons down at the same time.[/list]
[*]Volume down to "wipe data/factory reset", power button to select (not volume up this time.)
Confirm, delete everything. When it finishes, select "reboot system", press the power key to enter that choice.
Immediately press both volume keys together after the reboot begins and hold them until you see the bootloader menu again.
[*]Plug your USB cable into your phone and connect it to your computer.
Use volume down to select "AP Fastboot", volume up to confirm the choice.
Open RSDLite on your PC.
Press the "....." icon in the program, browse to and select the 1GB+ VRZ_XT894_6.5.1-167_DR4-1_M1-219_1FF_01 you downloaded earlier.
[*]Click "decompress/start flashing". Now wait for half an hour or so.
I believe there will be several phone restarts near the end, this is normal.
You're now back to stock GB. You no longer have to fastboot to this in order to go forward to ICS.[/list].
Now to get to ICS...
Go here. droidforums DOT net/forum/droid-4-hacks/212307-droid-4-utility-updated.html and download the tool. You don't need anything else but the main tool.
Grab your preferred ICS leak. 6.16.217 is the most recent: droidforums DOT net/forum/droid-4-roms/218610-ics-leak-6-16-217-update-zip-boot-img-crc.html
Flash to 6.13.219 if you didn't just do that.(follow the steps in the CODE block above).
Open the droid 4 tool (.bat file) after extracting from the archive. Plug your phone into the USB. Set it to debug mode. Install safestrap 1.09, root the droid.
Unzip D4 6.16.217.zip. Rename boot.img to ICSFIX.img and move it into the droid 4 utility subfolder named \files\
Copy Blur_Version.6.13.219.XT894.Verizon.en.US.zip (leave it zipped.) to your SDcard.
Go into safestrap and make a backup. Turn on safe mode. Reboot.
Reboot into Bootloader, select AP Fastboot. USB should still be connected and the droid utility open. Select option 16. (Errors might occur. This is fine.) Flash your blur.zip from sdcard. Follow prompts on utility. It will reboot, do some animations. When you see the motorola logo, let it do its thing. Once the moto logo fades out, force a reboot (hold VOL keys & power down.) Now hold vol down and press power, boot to bootloader, and select recovery. Press both power buttons when you see the dead sick android logo. Update from sdcard. Select the zip.
Let it flash. It'll reboot.
Open the droid utility. If you flash to another ICS version, UNINSTALL safestrap 1.09, and then install; the new version 2 one. Make backups. Root your phone. Use the last option on the droid utility to flash between ICS versions.
You cannot use it to flash between something like AOKP or CM9 to a normal ICS version (Yes I actually tried this, lol).
Sorry for wall of text, hopefully this helps you in some way, whether you're still bricked, or still want to go to ICS after fixing your brick.

Read those. It'll be good information for you. I can't post links yet, but it's pretty clear they're not spam and only meant to help somebody out <3
I currently have The Collective's AoCP build 3 Jelly Bean ROM on my Captivate. I need to go back to the Cyanogen 10 builds because it looks like they've fixed the lag issue. I came upon a really bad accident on my way to work and needed to call 911 ASAP. I unlocked my phone and hit the phone button and it must have taken 20 seconds for the dial pad to come up. I've gotta try something else...
My question is this. I can't get into recovery by turning the phone off and using the 2 or 3 button salute. I've tried volume up - power, volume down - power, and volume up&down - power. No dice. I've learned there is a 3buttonfix that I can download and install, but I read about it first and it says if you're running this bootloader or that bootloader don't use this fix because you WILL hard brick your device. I have no idea what bootloader I'm running and if I can't use this fix, what do I do to fix the issue? For future reference, how do I tell what boot loader I'm running?
The reason I want to MAKE SURE the 3 button salute works is I want to flash from AoCP to CM10 and if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do that. I can hold the power button down now, and choose reboot, then boot into recovery, and that works, but if I soft brick my device, that function won't do me any good.
Any guidance you pros out there have for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Don't use the 3 button fix. You are correct in that it will hard brick your phone. If adb works, you can use that to reboot into recovery. I think you can do that with a terminal emulator too ("su" first to get root access, then "reboot recovery").
There's not a way to tell which bootloader your on. If you want to know 100% without a doubt your on the latest, flash the kk4 stock ROM. Downside to that is you would have to start over on cm10 or any other aokp. Making a nandroid first will make it less painful.
Also, that dialer lag will happen with any ICS-JB ROM on this phone. It's pretty much unavoidable at this point. Have you ever done the recovery combination before? If not, then you may be doing it wrong. Hold down the volume buttons, and press the power button only until the screen turns on. Hold the volume keys down until you hit recovery.
Oh, duh, you're on AOcP. You should have a recovery option in your power menu under reboot.

I do have a recovery option int he power menu. But what if I soft brick my device? I have a rigged jig somewhere, but that wasn't reliable for me. Not because it doesn't work, but because I made it very, um, frugally.
So there is no way to know what boot loaders I'm on? Darn... I didn't do the original flashing. MobileTechVideos.com did the flashing after I hard bricked it where my jig no longer even worked.
Thanks all for your input, and anything else you may suggest.

If you're on AOCP you have GB bootloaders.

THANK you very much for that info. Do you know of anyway for me to be able to boot into recovery mode using a key combination? I tried what was mentioned above (holding volume up-down after pressing the power until it boots into recovery, but it just goes right to the AoCP boot animation).
Maybe your holding the buttons too long when you try the button combo.

You may have already tried this in your many attempts but I'll still throw in my two cents.
Starting with power off hold all three buttons at the same time. First you should see the att splash screen and then your kernel splash screen. Then the phone should turn off. Keep holding the buttons til you see the att screen again and then release them all. That should get you into recovery. At least that is exactly how I get there besides of course the power menu.

Wait are you missing download mode also?

Yes, I do appear to be missing download mode as well... What have I done? The phone runs just fine with AOCP The Collective, except it's just getting too laggy for me and I want to check out CM10's newest releases. BUT, I don't want to be flashing ROM's until I can boot into Recovery. I can REBOOT my phone from my Power menu once the phone boots up, but I can not get any button combination to work to boot me into recovery.
Regarding download mode... I can not enter download mode either. I power down, take battery out, remove SIM, place battery in phone hold volume up/down and insert usb cable. Just displays the battery charging meter...
When your phone turns on, do you have a white AT&T screen or is it a black gt-i9000 screen?

I do get the white AT&T screen... It comes on, then flash to a black screen and then back to the same white at&t screen, then to The Collective boot animation. This wouldn't be a problem for me, but I do want to play with some other ROM's, but I don't want to without this working...
I believe you can reboot in recovery using adb with the command : "reboot recovery"

I KNOW I can, but I can only do that if I am able to boot into a rom. What if something gets hosed?

Find that jig you rigged up and see if that gets you into download mode. If so I suggest using a one-click back to kk4 and I'd get the one with boot loaders for good measure. Then see if you can do any of the button combos

Thanks for the suggestion... I downloaded a 1 click to KK4 and used my jig, which worked. Got really lucky, as something happened at the SET PIT table during the ODIN process and I had to start over. Luckily it didn't brick, but on the next boot I got the icon of a phone and a computer with a triangle in between those icons. I ran ODIN again after booting into download mode, and it took. I'm not running KK4 and I can do the 3 finger salute, so now I'm going to start over with rooting and moving to Jelly Bean. What a way to get the recovery back...
Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

Glad that got you up and running. Sometimes it's unavoidable to flash back to stock like that but I suggest you keep that one click handy in case something else strange happens.
I absolutely cannot get a recovery to flash. I was running 5.1.1, unencrypted, rooted, twrp, etc. Went to flash the new 3rd M preview and kept getting an error on boot about the phone being corrupt or something. It would still boot and work fine and everything, just had the warning on boot. Tried booting into recovery and I got the alien with exclamation point above it (won't boot into recovery, it doesn't seem to exist). I've tried manually flashing both stock recovery, twrp, whole OTA files from both 5.1.1 and 6... pretty much everything I can think of. It's like the recovery partition just isn't taking the file when it is pushed. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
When you booted into recovery and got to the screen where you saw the android with the exclamation point above it, you did press power+volume up correct?

I pressed vol down + power to boot into the bootloader, then volume up to recovery, then power to go into recovery. Same thing, just a longer way, right?

When you get to the screen with the android with the exclamation point above it, press power and volume up at the same time. That will let you access stock recovery.

Doesn't do anything. Just stays on the screen with the small android lying down with the exclamation mark.
Edit: After trying repeatedly, that worked, not sure what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the help. At least I know it's not completely broken lol.

I'm having the same issue except my phone doesn't power up. I'm able to get into recovery and into the bootloader but I can't flash anything since my device is not being read by my computer. Any suggestions?

Please give full details of your issue, your OS on your computer, the files you are trying to flash and your steps already tried. Screenshots also help.

I think the sequence should be to hold the power button and press and release the vol up then release pwr from the android on his back.
