Title says it all. Woke up and the phone would not turn on (thought it was SOD). I pulled the battery and rebooted, but it would just stick on the Att boot logo. Tried full wipe/cache/dalvik but not avail. Odin'd back to stock and seemed to work, but realized that everything was installed to the external sd and the internal would not mount. The computer would not read the internal either. At this point, I honestly do not really care to go through a lot of troubleshooting to fix it. If anyone wants to mess with it, use it for parts, etc., let me know. I also have about 3 spare batteries, one of which is a 3200mAh. That being said, if anyone has some simple ideas let me know. My thought is that the internal sd is shot.
I'm gonna take a wild guess . .
you were on an ICS rom and you got the Encryption Unsuccessful message? if you search for EU bug, you will find several tgreads ob the topic.
'about 3 batteries' ?
wow, not exactly 3, eh

Was on slim (4.2.2) and did not receive any error. It was completely unexpected. As to the number of batteries, I enjoy camping/backpacking and need multiple batteries when out for more than a couple of days. I honestly don't know how many I have because they are scattered across camping bags, briefcases, etc. No telling how many I actually have.

Well, I lost cwm when I odined back to stock trying to fix the issue. Through this process I seem to have lost the ability to get into download mode using the three button combo. I'll try to jig it tonight and see if I can install can. If so, I'll report back with my results. Thanks guys.

Yea, I'm aware of that. Just not thinking when I was typing. I got it into download mode with a homemade jig. Can't get odin to recognize it on any of my computers at home (no matter what cable I use). Was able to get heimdall to recognize it on one of my usb ports. Tried one of the oneclick packages from AdamOutler. Everything looks like it installs correctly. Phone reboots, shows att screen, boot animation, galaxy S logo, then the screen goes black. If I press the hard keys, they light up, but nothing shows up on the screen (even if I press power button). At least it looks like information is being uploaded to my internal sd (external is removed). Where to go from here......

Use Odin/Heimdall from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Btw, Odin won't work on same usb port as Heimdall as it installs it's own drivers.
Tried the heimdall one click. No errors in flash. After the flash, it reboots into recovery and gives me the error "failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)". If I reboot, I just get stuck in a boot loop.

It was removed when I tried it last time (i.e., I tried to flash with the external installed and without). I am pretty sure that the internal sd is shot. I had a problem with some block errors a few months ago and believe that they finally got the best of me. A buddy of mine runs a mobile device repair shop and is going to take a look for me. I will report back.

K so like an idiot i deleted framework-res, and now my phone turns on to a black screen. I've tried to reflash it with odin and odin 1 click, but it always gets stuck at "file analysis". I don't get why because I used odin 1 click to install froyo in the first place so I know it works.
Anyway, I have no idea what to do, as I can't get any files on or off my phone because ADP will always say the device is not connected.
if its stuck at file analysis keep fiddling until it goes past that for instance plug in into download mode with it open and then unplug and replug it in. just keep trying.
i've been trying for hours... rebooting.. reinstalling.. everything. it won't get past File Analysis...

nope, still hangs at File Analysis
i have done the same and now back up i used an old odin to go back to original stock and then updated to froyo after. If you can use sdk adb reboot recovery and fromat your sd card then try odin again this worked for me
maybe try restarting computer. make sure you dont have anything adb related running. pull battery. start odin one click. put battery back in. hold vol-up and down at same time(just the vol. buttons no power) plug in usb from comp. to your phone while you still have the vol. buttons held. should be in download mode. click start.
and if you wanna try pushing a new framework, i guess you could try to boot into recovery and adb should see it then as debugging mode is auto on in recovery mode. let us know.

Are you using 64 bit Windows 7? I am and had a similar problem. On my original attempts to flash my phone with earlier versions of Cognition, I learned that if you don't disable the lagfix, you can have a problem. Assuming you used one I hope you disabled it. I also used odin 1-click at the time and it didn't work terribly well, mostly due to the voodoo lagfix ext4 filesystem.
Secondly, I've also found that it's best to go into download mode using the following method:
I do a battery pull, remove sim and sdcard (if you have one), put battery back in. Make sure your USB cable is plugged into a USB port on the motherboard, not one of those front USB ports (they sometimes don't get enough juice, you wouldn't want the device to disconnect in the middle of a flash). Hold volume up/down and plug in the USB cable. Odin one click should recognize the phone is hooked up to a COM port. At that point, you click the start button and it flashes. It should not take more than 1-2 minutes to flash. If Odin looks like it it is not working, rather it sits at Verifying or does not actually move at a brisk pace, it's not going to work. You can let it sit for hours and it will never flash. If this happens, do the battery pull and try again. My first time doing this was rather nerve wracking as i thought i bricked my phone. Had the screen with the phone/exclamation mark/computer and the computer did not detect my phone via USB. I've seen people who say reinstalling the Samsung drivers or rebooting the computer or switching USB ports might help as well.
Ever since i figured out the above, i've been able to flash my Captivate on Win 7 64bit without a hitch. Currently running the latest build of Cognition 2.2 and loving it.
I've done all of the above and Odin hangs on Verifying, ADB gives the same error message on every "ADB" command : "error: device offline: (while in recovery mode)
My computer/Odin does recognize that it's plugged in, but it won't mount and let me into the SD card or format it, etc.

Yes he should.
What did you do to fix it? Do tell.
10 bucks says he succeeded once he read the directions properly.
Reading is hard, that is why so few people do it.
Same exact thing happened to to me 2 days ago. All I did was:
1)take the battery and SIM card out, wait a few seconds,
2)run Odin3 on my PC and hookup the USB cable to the phone while still off
3) hold both Volume buttons down while phone is off and connected
3)at the same time, slide in the battery with 1 finger or have someone do it
4)keep volume keys held down as the battery is installed and my phone turned on straight into download mode
5) phone pops up in Odin3 and just click Start, flashed to stock JH6
I am 80% sure I wasn't holding the power button while holding the Vol keys. If that doesn't work above ^^^ hold all 3 buttons and it should go into download mode.
so.. I fubard framework.apk trying to get teh circle battery mod on my phone (it just hung forever and *poof* black screen o' nothing after I pulled the battery)
So.. I'm following the directions but windows keeps finding the phone as some type of crazy serial device and is asking for drivers ... so I'm fux0red methinks.
Any help is appreciated - but I think I did a real number on this thing.
Ok... these are the steps I've done.
Shutdown the device.
Pulled battery, Sim, SD Card.
Popped the battery back in.... didn't power it up.
Turned on Odin3
Popped the USB cable into the phone while holding both volume buttons.
I get the lil triangle.
... then I get a windows message stating "SERIAL GADGET" and the XP wizard comes up looking for drivers. It doesnt find anything of course.
So.. I rinse and repeat and it can't find the device.
So what am I missing o wise XDA folks?

Get the right drivers if you havent already and find the USB port that works. Post 8 above is very good. On my netbook, only one of the three usb ports works for the captivate, i've marked it since with a happy face.
Ok.. at home now on my Win7 machine - all is good in Odin restore land...
Except - I flash using the Odin 1 Click and still boot to a black screen.
I think because I had the Voodoo lagfix on it - it won't format correctly and load the rest of the ROM onto the SDCard
I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port

Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

I was having the same problem. Have you tried powering off, start odin, hold both the volume up/down, then plug in the usb to your phone?
Ok, I turned my Nook (rooted 1.01) on yesterday after maybe 2 weeks not using it (was turned off all the time).
I got stuck in the colored n screen and turned it off by presseing power button after it didn't boot after some minutes.
Now it is doing nothing anymore. Blank screen, not booting no answer to anything (longpress or plugging USB)
I read that this might be because due to some reasn system is broken and i tried recovery using a disk with the clockwork image. After inserting the uSD, unfortunately it is also not booting and not responding to any long keypress, with or without power...
BTW1: the Nook cable power indicator is always yellow - its not getting green even if it was plugged in for some time. does that say anything?
BTW2: I am from europe and bought the Nook in the US, but cannot return it from here :-(
Any ideas ?
Any tip on how to find out if it is essentially functional?
Anytool I can use?
Thanks for any idea !
The few things I would probably try from here is holding the power button for 10 seconds wait a bit and try to turn it on. Also turn it "on" where the lights and that come on and let it run till the battery dies, that could take a day or two, and see after some charging if it will start back up.
Good idea - it might be still running with a blank screen...
If I plug in the Nook cable in my PC, it tries to install a driver and a "OMAP360x" device can be seen in Win7 Device Manager. Does this prove that the device is still running ?
btw the Omap entry is just there for some seconds than drops out of the list automatically...
You are getting the same thing like mine.
I fixed though. It is simple.
First make sure you have Clockwork Recovery burned to an uSD then plug the SD card to the nook.
Afterwards have the nook connected to your computer and keep the power button pressed for at least 15 seconds, cause you ought to see the screen go white and black really fast since it will be booting into recovery.
Now that is if you have enough battery. If not it will tell you to go plug it it for at least 15 mintutes to charge. In that case you will need to plug it in the outlet.
Do that and let me know what happens.
Will try this again, today and report.
Thanks!

Thanks for the help
is there any way to get the Rom Manager with the drop bucket? I cant get market to work
After looking for quite a few hours on google and xda the only solution thats shows up is to use a jtag and quite frankly that scares the pants off me
here is what happened
-i upgraded the device to froyo then did the super one click root in order to root
-after that i installed the modified recovery to turn off the signature check
-after doing that i flashed clockwork mod renamed update.zip through recovery
-after that i flashed the ICS beta but i could not get the main zip to work through recovery the only other zip i had on my sd card was the kernel so i flashed that and it worked, in clockworkmod 5.0 it wiped everything on the phone so i reloaded the 2 zips i flashed the rom there and it rebooted. (this is out of order from the thread so i know this is what causes the next problem.
now when ICS boots up i get an encryption unsuccessful screen saying i need a factory reset, only option given is reboot now. can't bypass the screen, can't access via adb (driver install fails on windows too), cant get into download mode, and can't get into recovery.
how screwed am i
device is
Samsung captivate
-build number 1009
You need Gingerbread bootloaders.
And since you cant get into download mode... You probably need a USB Jig.
Good news is that you see something at startup. I doubt you are totally screwed then.
Second the jig as an option. It has quite the track record on this forum as making the captivate almost un-brickable.
What have you tried as far as getting your phone into download mode? There are sometimes multiple ways (Vol-up + Vol-down while plugging in USB without battery, sim, or microsd installed is how I always seem to get it working). Here is a list:
http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
To my knowledge, none of that information is dated... but there are those here that know far more about it than I ever will.
none of those methods worked, it just stinks if it would have been any other rom i would have been fine i think but since i can't do anything in user space and everything i do takes me to the ICS android screen i cant do anything.
also for the record i am a noob to samsung devices but i have been doing this stuff to HTC devices for years

Did you try this method to get into download mode?
1. Turn off phone, remove sim, battery, sd
2. hold both volume buttons, keep holding for remainder of instructions
3. insert usb
4. insert battery
This has instantly granted download mode on every captivate i've ever tried.

The team hacksung project might be compatible, but the straight port says in the op that you need to flash kf1 first, which included bootloaders.
You aren't hard bricked and your device is recoverable.
If you are still on the froyo bootloaders, try unplugging the usb cable, removing the battery, sim and sd cards, hold vol up+vol down (don't hold power), and plug the usb cable back in. It should take you to download mode.
If your phone responds to adb while it's booting, you can just issue a quick 'adb reboot download' or 'adb reboot recovery' to get it to boot into either without the button combos.
If either of those don't work, you can try forcing it with a usb jig (just a 301k resistance over pins 4 and 5 of the microusb port). Build a jig, take the battery out, plug the jig in, make sure not to touch the jig while it's in or you'll change the resistance and won't work, put the battery back in and it should kick your phone into download mode. Once you're there, simply remove the jig and plug the usb cable back in.
Sometimes the download mode graphic won't show up even if you are actually in download mode. If the phone looks like it hung, try connecting it to Odin anyway and see if it recognizes it.
Edit: forgot to mention, try using adb from linux (virtual machine or livecd will work too). You shouldn't have to mess with drivers and it's worth a shot.

All I have to say is wow, not one of those things are true

Hey,
Could you tell us more about how it was resolved?
I'm having the same issue here.
After all the abuse I got for saying something bad about AOIP, I decided to try to reinstall a new download. I think that was a mistake. The gapps won't load and all I get are errors talking about terminated scripts. Unfortunately, I can't seem to boot into recovery (TWRP). If the rom won't load, how do I boot into recovery mode so I can flash back to my nandroid? Thanks for your help.

Can you get in to download mode? Volume down + power? I can make you an Odin flash-able TWRP tar file if you can do that.

Thanks for responding. Sometimes I can get it into the screen with the download option with the yellow triangle sign at the bottom, but pressing the volume up or down buttons have no effect. I do not seem to be able to get into download mode. I did find that you can access both sd cards through the computer, if USB is connected. Right now, it says it's in safe mode, but it's still in that loop saying that "setup wizard has stopped." I also see an error saying different apps have not loaded properly.

Were you able to boot in to recovery easily before? Pull battery, put it back and hold volume up + power until Samsung logo comes up, count to two and let go of the power button only. I can do it every time that way.
For download mode:
Try taking out your battery for a minute and when you put it back in press volume down + power. If you are still unable to get into Odin then this method isn't going to work.
Did you flash the right Gapps for the ROM you were trying to install? Just trying to figure out where you went wrong.
it's ALIVE!

TWRP finally booted and I reloaded a nandroid from before i tried AOIP. It seems alive again. There phones really are indestructible. Should I load new roms from the internal sd? Would that be a better idea? Right now, they're all on the external, but I can put the one I want to install on the internal before I begin. Would that maybe make things go more smoothly? Thanks.

Nice! Glad you got it working. You can move it to internal if you think it helps. I have always installed from the external and never had a problem. Of course, YMMV.
I may have been using the wrong gapps.

I took the plunge and reinstalled with the correct gapps. Everything seems good. When I tried to flash a new kernel, though, it kept booting into recovery. Is there something I am missing? I am not wiping anything before installing the kernel. Thanks.
