[Q] What might cause voice calls to lack sound? - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have flashed my GF's phone with XXLQ4, and it seems do work splendidly except for one, small (but significant) problem:
Whereas the phone connects perfectly well to her carrier (enabling her to send SMS' and placing calls, for instance), whenever a call is placed or received, there is absolutely no sound being transmitted whatsoever: She can't hear the other party, who can, similarly, not hear her.
Now, I don't have ready access to a Windows machine, so I did this using Heimdall. Before you all tell me to find a machine with Odin (which might be a viable last resort), does anyone know exactly which file exactly, I might have failed to flash in order to see this problem?
Best regards,
Sune Mølgaard

Have u verified its a software problem? Also try llqb through heimdall and check. Or if you just want to get the thing done there is no harm in using odin

Thank you for answering. I was a bit wary about lqb since it seemed to reference a carrier-branded, Serbian phone.
I shall happily try it out on your recommendation, though
I didn't place any calls before trying to flash, so I can't rule out a hardware failure, but between different attempts, there have both been situations where no sound was to be heard and all, and the current one that does seem to play a sound signifying the call attempt.
Combined with the fact that neither party to the call can hear each other, blaming it on hardware would require accepting that both the (internal) speaker *and* the microphone should happen to be faulty at the same time, leading me to lend more credence to a software problem.
Best regards,
Sune Mølgaard

Poor Sound Quality (Person on Other End Complains)

Hello All,
I am running Dutty's Dual Touch v1.1 Rom with radio 1.27.12.17 on my ATT Tilt. The device is brand new, 6 days old now. Whenever I make a phone call, I can hear the other person perfectly. However I have consistently heard complaints from the person on the other end of the line. They complain that they can't hear me, saying I sound muffled or far away. In some cases they can't hear me at all, and I would have to call the other person back. Sometimes they can hear me perfectly, and sometimes they cant. I'd say its 50/50, good and bad. What could be the problem?
Thanks,
thehin
I have similar problem. Sometimes people just can't hear me well, but I always can hear everyone perfectly. During the normal call it happens not very often, but the loudspeaker is almost unusable, in most cases none can here what I speak.
I have a good GSM coverage in my area, my old Nokia 6680 produced a good call quality.
I have standard ROM 1.56.405.5 (08/28/07), Radio: 1.27.12.11
I think, it is probably something in the Kaiser's hardware, because I’ve heard about similar problems from different people with totally different ROMs and radios.
Big Problem
This is a huge problem for me, it's somewhat embarrassing when people can't hear you, and you are forced to call back or call from another phone. I have full service, and have no problems with data connections. Could it be due to a constant connection????
Is your data connection active when you're on the phone? If so, try turning them off and then making calls. I think I read somewhere (or made up in my head) that the 3G connection messes with your call connection.
I expiernece the problem in both scenarios. I turned off 3G through comm manager, and it still happens. I even disabled data all together and it still happened. :-(!!!

I think it is nothing to do with the data connection, mine is mostly off, but the problem remains. Theres some cases the sound just floating, according to recipients and they just cant hear what I am saying.
If anyone DOES NOT experience the same problems, can you please be kind enough to share your ROM version, and radio version?
Thanks
Has nothing to do with ROM type. The Mic on the HTC8925 / Tilt / kaiser is located at bottom right-hand edge of the device. Although your voice sound travels through all of the bottom parts of the device, the most sensitive spot is the small hole next to the mini USB plug in. If you are holding the phone and covering the bottom part of the phone with your palm, then the person on the other side of the call will not hear you well.
To test, start HTC recorder or Resco Recorder program and while tapping on various areas of the phone surface observe the behavior of the decibel meter on the Recording program. You will then discover the most sound sensitive spot of your device.
I will give that a try. However the other night when I was talking to someone, they claimed they couldn't hear me at all, and I was coming in and out. I checked my reception, full service. No data connection, no bluetooth, no wifi, no 3G, no GPS, no apps running. I then held the phone out and talked directly into the mic, he still could not hear me. I held the phone a little farther away, still no go. One person said I sounded like i was whispering off a mountain peak.
ARGGHH :-( I love this phone, but this is pretty annoying.

LOL thats exactly how the Titan sounds through bluetooth, only it so happens to sound that way. on our side of the call.
Finally!
I'm so glad to find other people suffering the same problem.
I'm battling with Handtec & HTC to try and resolve this issue, it's driving me *and callers* mad.
I've been waiting 3 months for this to be resolved and Handtec have finally agreed to replace it... but if this is a common problem, a replacement isn't likely to resolve it. £440 is a lot of money for something you can only use 50% of the time.
I also has the same problem. People sometimes just told me that they hear nothing frommy side suddently for a few seconds.
The only way to "contain" it is using Bluetooth, this way so far I never found problem any more.
ROM: 1.56.708.3
Radio: 1.27.12.11
Well my At&t Tilt is stock, i mean i havent change any radio roms or what ever, and I have the same problem, sometimes people complaint they cant hearme, I know its very anoying, but on my case its not like a 50/50, its more 75/25 (25 they cant hear) this happend on the 2 o 3 first days I had the phone, After that or the people I call can hear me, or the problem persist and they dont tell me.
I see the microphone its on the bottom of the phone, I think its because of that, when people complain I simply put it on speaker and talk directly to the microphone (but I dont know if this works ) hehe
Good morning and Happy New Year
I have had the same problem but after upgrading to Dutty's Dual Touch v2 Rom and radio 1.27.12.32 the sound is excellent, tested it yesterday and both on speaker and off speaker is very clear. My advice if you do not want to move to Dutty's v2 then at least flash the Radio to .32
Good luck
I don't have the problem. I'm using a TyTN II version with stock ROM. Got it when it came out so a few months ago.
I have the same problem, and mine is stock standard. Also tried it with and woth out 3G, blue tooth ect ect ect ect same problem.
Any Advice Anyone.
On another site, the issue was discussed and some one suggested the issue was caused by a .dll file conflict that routs or attempts to rout calls to HTC recorder program. It was also suggested to remove any recording software from the device or disable its call recording in the settings and see what happens.
I have been trying to look for a solution for that problem, Finally I decided to let go and stop using the loudspeaker option
I am trying to research this on other related forums and will get back to you if I am lucky.....
I got the same problem, but the person on the other end of the line can't hear me, with or without the loudspeaker option!!
Has anybody found a fix for this?

ICS Fixes/Workarounds

First i want to thank hashcode and everyone who has helped him for the Great ICS build =] I realized that most the posts in the ICS development thread were becoming troubleshooting to basic problems [some by me ], so i decided to make this thread to help others.
Before you post with a problem make sure you have wiped /data/cache/dalvik and done a full factory reset. Also tried installing again. Please also state if you restored your google settings. This will help speed up the process in helping you.
Below are a list of fixes for bugs that have yet to fixed in an updated release, if there are more fixes please tell me and ill add them here. Have fun ;]
Input Selection Keyboard Fix by Androidsims
Go to /system/app and delete OpenWnn.apk and PinyinIME.apk and the chinese and japanese input methods will be gone. Along with the icon in the top. If you have another keyboard installed [such as swype] the icon will still show.
Apps are a bit laggy
use Rom Toolbox to set your VM heap size to 88m. I cant remember where but it was said that this is best to achieve a smoother experience with ICS.
Watch Videos on ICS
use the latest vlc for android. Have to click on videos via root explorer or another file manager app. Opening app directly just causes a force close.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517415
I also ran into my audio disappearing when a call was connected. I went back into safestrap recovery, repeated the wipe data, wipe cache, wipe delvik without having to reinstall ICS and audio was back. Anytime things start getting buggy this is usually my first step before reinstalling.

not sure if it is just me but in alph 1 and 2 i get alot of static when i make or receive any calls thru bluetooth.
i've wiped everything even tried re-installing a couple times and even tried a different bluetooth headset. no matter what i wipe/reset/re-install it all ends up the same result. with static on all calls both ways. i hear static and so does the caller.

I combed the ics forum and found issues similar to this but they were solved with methods mentioned above. The fact that you tried all this already makes me feel the problem is unique to u. Try booting into nonsafe and see if you have the issue then. Sorry for the late reply btw

Better that no reply thanx for the help. But I have installed multiple different roms so far and they all work fine, and last time I was in non-safe mode it worked fine but im not sure if at the time ics was installed on my safe system(not sure if that matters or if that is what you were implying or not). So on BT you can make calls and receive calls with no issues? Mine is kinda weird, when I make a call the static is speratic, when I dial out every time it rings there is static and then I can hear the ring (constantly), when in a conversion every couple of words of the caller is static as well.

Not me. If you scan drom page and past in the ics thread someone was talkin about that issue. I can't remember the exact page and I'm on my phone but look in those sections. There issue was different however but I believe it was still solved with a wipe. I think they wiped the delvik too. But I've read all the posts in the that thread though, I don't think there was anything about static. I reccommend you go ask in there because hash can probably help best.

Awesome, thanks for the input/help guys..
Loving ICS so far, thanks a lot!
My biggest complaint (maybe user error):
Pandora isn't playing audio over my car speakers via Microsoft SYNC. I get successful connection with my car, but I just can't get it to play through the speakers.
Haven't had a chance to test out other media apps.
Does it use cable, 3g, or bluetooth to hook up to the speakers? and to the person before, i havent seen a solution at all with the bluetooth, i think it something Hash will have to fix
Sorry forgot to specify. This is via Bluetooth.
I haven't tried USB or 3.5mm connections yet. I don't keep them in the car since I haven't needed them before.
Edit: I should also mention that audio does play through the phone's speaker. So even though it's connected to BT I'm still only getting sound from the phone's speaker.
Ah thats what i was thinking. I think these bluetooth issues need to be brought to Hash attention as its more than one person experiencing problems with it. And its seems to be solely with bluetooth. You shuld report a bug with it to him in his tracker here
http://www.hash-of-codes.com/tracker
As for help i can tell you to make sure you also wipe your dalvik. I have forgot to mention that to people. Instructions from hash ;] Other than that because im no hashcode i really cant code anything to fix the bluetooth. Report it thought and hash might be able to fix it in Alpha 3
Thanks. Yeah I've been looking for a place to provide feedback and just ended up here.
How do I wipe dalvik? I've seen that mentioned every where along with cache data, but I got list on dalvik.
Boot into safestrap, go down to advanced and click that, and then you should see it. its the second or third option i believe
I must have looked over it. Thanks, I'll check it out.
On another note, 3.5mm plug in works fine in the car. Also, I connected via Bluetooth again and tested out calling. Hands free calling seems to work fine with SYNC.
If hands free calling is working clear then it might be an app error. Is this error with your nonsafe rom? If not then I'm thinking their are still some compatibility issues between apps. I'm going to email both app developers and see if they still have bugs with ics or know anything.
Edit: I reread the thread again. Also look into your settings. The fact that the phone isn't even trying to send the audio over bluetooth is sounding like it doesn't know it has to. Make sure all the settings for both apps are correct and that this function is availible for this. I'm going to do a little research before I email the devs for help and ill tell you what I find
I still have safe boot enabled.
I forgot I was going to try out Amazon Cloud Player. I'll test that tonight yet. I also have to test Pandora since wiping dalvik. Not sure how much of a difference it would make.
I did double check the settings both times I've tried it. I don't think I've looked over anything. So maybe there are compatibility issues with the Pandora app. Cloud Player may be a good test to that.
Amazon Cloud Player does the same.
Turns out SYNC doesn't see my contacts. I have to use the phone to pick a contact but the dial tone plays over the car speakers. I'm thinking it is a Bluetooth issue related to this alpha #2 build.

Others can't hear me well during phone call

Greetings!
This is my first post in this forums. They've been very useful to flash, check updates, etc and I've never had the necessity of posting anything since I've cleared mostly any doubt I've ever had about my Android devices. This time, after searching all over the forums and in several other sites over the net I haven't been able to find any solution to my problem. Let me expose it:
Few months ago after having flashed my device to different ROM's, my friends started to tell me that they couldn't hear me well during phonecalls. The sound was not clear enough. They could hear, the volume was ok, but the phonecall the sound call they would recieve was not well.
I thought that this would be related to the hardware, maybe the mic was broken, because once I was thrown into a swimmingpool and I saved my phone by putting it into a jar with rice and letting it rest for few days. However, I have used other programs such as Skype and done the test phonecall so I could hear myself and it went verywell compared to call recorder app tests or regular call, the sound was much better. So I guess that the microphone is still okay and the problem is related to a setting issue that haven't been changed with flashing to different ROMS.
I've been running several ROMS, most of them based in CM7 and I'm now back to the latest stock ROM for America (2.3.5) and the problem is the same.
Any advice will be very apprecciated!

Actually, nothing of the posted above has worked out. If its a software problems how changing hardware would work?
if its still there is a problem after flashing stock one...than its probably your mic need replacement..!

I just cant figure how the mic works well with skype and not with phonecall and how changing de mic would fix it

[Q] Severe phone calls problem

Hey there,
I know it has been discussed partly, but with I think different aspects and details than I have. To cut it short: in about 50% of my phone calls, be it with good or bad reception, people cannot hear me speak on the phone.
The fun thing is, this cannot be connected to the internal microphone since I have it both on the normal mic as well as my bluetooth headset. No matter whether I call them or they call me. Sometimes (!) it helps to mute and re-enable the microphone on-screen, but this is not always effective. I thought this may be related to a bad combination of firmware and radio, but I recently switched to InsertCoin GE und updated both FW and radio, to no avail as regards to that matter. Furthermore, sometimes phonecalls just drop in the middle of a conversation, with no change in signal quality as far as I recognize.
Does this sound like some software thingy (and one might have a solution) or would you believe this is hardware related?
All the best in advance

Hey there,
of course, I picked InsertCoin GoogleEdition with the corresponding 3.06.1700.10 firmware that's offered as a complementary download for the ROM. No hands on the kernel, left the one coming with the ROM. Does that help ?

can you do a nandroid backup and try with another ROM? You could also ask in the thread of the ROM if someone got a similar problem.
I would also downgrade the firmware to the latest for HTC One (non GE). this should not be the problem but just to be sure

Yeah, I think I can. But I came from a 4.2.2 ROM with the latest radio, TrickDroid 8.0 and I had the very same problems. Does it more sound like a hardware than a software issue?

[Q] Call sound repeating problem

I don't know if it is the app or another problem but when I make voice calls, people on the other end of the phone can here their own voice just after speaking. So when I talk back/reply they hear their own voice along with what I am saying. It has become almost impossible to talk to anyone because people just hear their own voice on top of what I am saying.
I clean installed the official stock firmware and the problem still exists.
Can you please suggest me how I can solve this problem? :crying:
@pleomaxell
To be frank , I've searched for the explanation of the settings all over the web, but couldnt find any.
Moreover, I got no such problems. All my audios and calls seem to be louder then before. I pretty much use the 'quality settings', and sometimes use the 'custom' one.
Coming to your query, have you tried uninstalling then making a call.?
Just to see if no such issue arises

Never.ever encountered this issue in my whole life.
Sorry buddy
If all fails, maybe you could try a factory reset. Provided you backed everything up using the titanium backup app
