If you are ever in an area where your phone is jumping back and forth between a weak LTE signal and an HSPA signal, you know how quickly it can drain your battery. In situations like those, it is often helpful just to force your phone to stick to HSPA or even EDGE. Thankfully, that appears to be possible on the HTC First.
1. Open the dialer.
2. Enter *#*#4636#*#* -- this will automatically take you to a screen that says "Testing" at the top.
3. Tap "Phone information"
4. Scroll down to a drop down menu that will probably say "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" and tap it
5. To force 2G EDGE, tap "GSM only."
6. To turn off LTE and have your phone choose between HSPA and EDGE, tap "WCDMA preferred."
7. To force HSPA, tap "WCDMA only."
8. To return to LTE, tap "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto."
9. Hit home or back to return to home screen.
10. PROFIT!
Not sure if the setting will survive a reboot, but it's really simple to do whenever you need to anyways.

i9000m. still on stock rom, UGJG9
went and used the "*#*#4636#*#*" command
went into Phone Information
> Set preferred network type:
> Chose WCDMA only
> Pressed back touchpad to exit out of "phone info" menu
> Went back in to see it on GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Still in the Phone info menu
looked at network type: UMTS
the original intent was to get the handset to stay on 2G to conserve power
WCDMA only means that your Phone will only use UMTS...?
Same here on the vibrant. Seem to be a problem on all galaxy phones
Don't press "back", after you make the change press "Home" and the change will be saved.
I just verified this on my captivate flipping back and forth between "WCDMA preferred" and "GSM/CDMA auto"

Why don't you try other settings? Such as gsm auto prl and wcdma only? Oh and did you restart your phone after??
When I flashed my phone with Bell's 3 button firmware I got the same issue. Now I'm back with my aussie stock firmware and all is well.
Try switching the rom.

Hey to get WCDMA only you can just go to Settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Networks. It should be changed to WCDMA only now if you go back to testing .
I, however, would like to change to WCDMA preferred in testing, but I'm having the same problem as it just keeps switching back to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)... Does anyone know a fix for this?

Works, Thanks
So Im watching my battery drain today, and have a thought... why not turn off 3G? So I throw the power widget on my home screen (CM6 RC1) and try to use the option for "2G" only, and nothing happens. I try to tell it to only disable 4G and leave 2G when I disable data and disable it, I completely lose data.
Why the heck cant I force this thing onto 1x? If it helps, I'm using Flipz's Radio that utilizes the VZW towers. Anyone know how to do what Im trying to do here?
try ##3282#. then choose edit mode, enter your msl, select evdo, select preferred mode, select cdma only, press MENU, select commit modifications. the device will reboot. that should get you the 1xRTT that youre looking for.
I just installed Cyanogen 7 on my Nexus One, and couldn't be more pleased. The problem is, my phone now switches into Edge mode for days at a time, for no real quantifiable reason. It then seems to switch on its own, back to 3G/HSDPA. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I've tried rebooting the phone to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
What's the signal level or the area that you're in? Could it have anything to do with coverage?
There's an option in the mobile networks settings to toggle between 2G/3G, but I'm not aware of it being set by itself. This toggle button can be placed into the notification power widget toolbar, maybe it's getting set there?
Another thing to look at is the 'Phone info' with the *#*#4636#*#* menu. Near the bottom there's a drop-down for 'preferred network type'. From what I understand, 'WCDMA preferred' will try to use 3G if it is available with a lower signal threshold than 'GSM auto (PRL)', which will prefer 2G unless the signal for 3G is much better. I know that this value changed when I toggled between 2G and 3G with the notification power widget.
Is there a pattern to when it switches between 3G and Edge, either based on time or location? How is the signal/coverage in your area?
I live in downtown Chicago, and consistently got 3G before this. I don't think it's a signal issue as it randomly comes back to 3G/HSDPA and stays there in the same areas before going back and sticking on Edge.
I'm set to WCDMA preferred. Should I change that?
There seems to be no pattern, no. It's very strange.
I am running the AOKP-targa-milestone-4 mod of ICS and i set my phone mode to just cdma because data kept dropping. Now 3g and wifi are completely stable and i would like to change the mode back to cdma/lte but my bionic wont let me, i press on the cdma/lte mode and it reverts back to just cdma. Any i can do to re enable 4g?
Go to the dialer, enter *#*#4636*#*# then tap "Phone Information" and then under "Set Preferred Network Type" and you should be able to find an option that looks like either
1. CDMA/LTE Auto (PRL)
2. GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL)

Thanks a bunch, ill try that-----It worked well, thanks a bunch! Also the app Phone Info in the market does the same thing! Hopefully 4g just doesnt drop now!
I'm wondering how if there is any easy and temporary way disable 5G and stay on LTE. Usually there is an option in mobile networks to select a preferred network but there is no option there for me (Google Fi). I've seen some apps that are supposed to give the option to switch networks but the 2 I tried didn't work. I'd like to avoid making any permanent settings changes that can't be switched back easily too.
I have no use for 5G speeds right now (LTE isn't much slower for me anyway) and LTE should give me better battery life which would be nice.

For non-standalone 5G networks, you should be able to select the Preferred Network Type, and just select LTE/CDMA or LTE/GSM/UMTS. If you do not see this option, you can also do this through the phone's dialer by entering the following command:
*#*#4636#*#*
Select "Phone Information"
There will be an option to "Set Preferred Network Type"
Select the network type that does NOT have "NR" in the name. I would select LTE/TDSCDMA/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA. That should cover pretty much every provider but will take out the 5G NR.
I forgot about that menu. That's exactly what I needed, thank you!
