HTC is legendary for its tacit support of the Android ROM cooking community. Motorola... not so much, thanks in large part to the company's policy of locking down the bootloader as a means to prevent unapproved software from running on its Droid handsets. An annoyance recently exacperated by a moderator of Moto's YouTube channel who suggested that customers looking to install custom ROMs should "buy elsewhere." Ouch. The resulting public relations kerfuffle then prompted Motorola to publish a clarification to its bootloader policy on Facebook:
We apologize for the feedback we provided regarding our bootloader policy. The response does not reflect the views of Motorola. We are working closely with our partners to offer a bootloader solution that will enable developers to use our devices as a development platform while still protecting our users' interests. More detailed information will follow as we get closer to availability.
Obviously, we'll have wait for said details to get official before calling this a shift in strategy. It's certainly an improvement over Moto's previous approach of lawyering-up with cease and desist orders. Perhaps Motorola is taking a cue from Microsoft who seems to have recently discovered that it's better to embrace than to annoy a motivated hacking community -- customers who tend to be a company's most dedicated fans and evangelists.
Good news?

its a maybe. maybe they will launch our froyo locked, maybe it'll be open. we never know.
i just read this also. this could be great news or another terrible taunt whih leads to nothing.

Sounds like a PR stunt to quell the immediate situation before waiting for it to blow over.

I dont believe in manufaturer, i believe in XDA dev's..... this a "cold water" not a hope for us.
I hope this isn't just some PR bull and moto actually enables us to load custom kernels.
That press release says nothing about unlocking the bootloader, only that they will help devs which could mean anything!

LMFAO!!!
i dnt believe motorolsh!t will do that(unlocking the bootloader)
I so love my new HTC Desire! couldnt stand this situation anymore....! sorry guys...
It is just the usual PR crap which companies like them give when they screw up on the social networking front. The "..buy elsewhere.." was just a such screw up. A Royal one I would say!
They are now trying to calm down the situation by giving us this crap..
I think it's just a excuse about the bad comments in youtube video, nothing more than that.

That seems most likely but perhaps the fallout and bad press from that will push them to do what they should have done long ago, free the bootloader in some form so we can get custom ROMs on it.

Yes, I really want to see this happening, but I don't have any hope about Motorola opening the bootloader.
If they do, ok, excelent news to the community, to all developers that will make even better ROMs and for all of us that have a Motorola phone. We can see the quality of alternative ROMs for Motorola Milestone today as example. It's obvious that the only limitation is the bootloader, so the quality can be massively improved if we can change and optimize the kernel.
But I think all people here are already tired from Motorola's position about his costumers: Censorship on comments (youtube and motorola forums), censorship on criticism (even the very good ones, Motorola does not seem to care about the opinion of his costumers), cease and desist in community cases like the ROM of Droid X and sites with roms (that its very stupid IMHO)... and the list goes on...
By the way, my only hope is, if that happens and I have not exchanged my phone yet, good.. I'll make good use of it. But honestly? I have now my last phone from Motorola.
Am I missing something? Forgive my ignorance, but what is "locked up" about the bootloader? I'm running CM6 along with the overclocked CM6 kernel, and there are tons of other custom ROMs out for the Droid as it stands. What is restricted by Motorola?

Milestone users cannot use custom kernels. All the AOSP ROMs still have to use the SAME kernel, supplied by Mot. They lock it to the bootloader. This means problems trying to compile modules and customer kernels and no way to patch bugs.
It is much more work for devs to get stuff done for the milestone than other phone (htc comes to mind).
Examples of issues: battery life, phone sleeping, waiting for compatible kernel or hack for new android versions, swap support, vpn support, other filesystem support... the list goes on.
But you allowed to be happy with your phone. Not everybody needs these things...

He has a very good point. Where other android device builders seem to be promoting development (Huawei excluded, theyre miser's just like Motorola), this company seems to be more prominent on the restriction of development on their devices.
One very good reason for this is that Motorola has been such a huge phone developer for such a long time, that they have probably let it go to their head. Now instead of saying "our consumers said they need this", they're sayin "we think they really only need this." I've used Motorola phones for about 8 years now, and I would DEFINITELY say someone forgot that their customers put them where their at.
I agree. Someone needs to get out there and give them a taste of Good Customer Service. I dont think restricting dev's is a great marketing idea, or revenue booster anyways. BUt then again, to each, his own.
This is PR.Nothing more.
Know motorola they do not update РСТ(Russian legal)Milestone, they do not
need to unlock this crap bootloader.
Hy guys . I'm a new user of Xda forum so sorry if That's not the good place for thread.
I've a little question, Officially, HTC says sense 3.0 is esp. for new mobiles but anyone knows if this version will arrive inside our Incredible S mobile ?
T.U
i think this has been mentioned before, but well
after 2.3.3 update or higher... we should recieve it by than
Some features of Sense 3.0 are supposed to make it to an update for the Incredible S, but not all. Which ones haven't been announced yet.
Ok thank you for the information
And sorry i've mentioned for the second time.
I'm sure HTC skipped releasing gingerbread this month as they promised to make the sense UI 3.0 compatible with the release.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
I hate to see this date creeping back due to upgrades, but I do like the look of the new sense... with the hero firts it was and upgrade to 1.6, then they pushed it back for 2.0, then pushed it back for 2.1... it took quite a while.
Still, HTC's original statement for the IS and MWC was Gingerbread in Q2, Which is April-May-June, so they still have 2 months to keep to their original word. the did say they would encorporate some features of 3.0 onto older phones (i.e older than the sensation), and although they didn't say which devices the IS and DS are most logical. However, that doesn't mean to say the gingerbread update and the Sense update will one and the same, they might be delivered seperatly, as gingerbread with sense is already released with Sense 2.0 on the DS, and the leaked builds for the IS are still Sense 2.0
I'm so sorry to tell you that is "NO", HTC had announced that Sense 3.0 is only for duo-core HTC and Flyer.

The question was if Sense 3.0 would be available for the IS. It will not.
They will try to "incorporate some aspects" as said in the Cnet article via Twitter.
Would you call a version of your software 3.0 if it has less features then another 3.0 version you've made? Especially if you have version numbers 2.2 to 2.9 available?
I posted the twitter link as a source to my arguments. As I am sick and tired of people posting stuff like: "A guy at HTC told me" without any official source.
I think this is a good way to prevent forum spamming, because you have a direct link to the posters source.
You did exactly the same with the Cnet aritcle, I don't know what the problem is.
a) Twiiter is not an offical source, a press release is
b) It depends what gets ported and what doesn't. If sense come over without some of the animations then yes I would say its the same. Until we know what will and what won't there is no point telling people 'it's not comming' and spreading FUD. It's much better to say "some of it's coming, we don't know what". See my point?
I'm sick and tired of people Acting like they are better than everyone else. The CNET article explained and linked to both tweets and explained the timeline involved, which is why I linked to it.

I find it strange that you are so angry. In the last sentence I complemented you on giving a source. I merely gave a source of my information as well. If you wan't credit for being first, you should have said so.
All I ment to do was, as explained in my previous post. To give the source of my information, and make it easier for someone reading the forum.
Writing this I'm wondering. Do you think I'm accusing you of being a "a guy at HTC told me" dude, because that is certainly not the case.
Anyway, you are accusing me of acting to be better than everybody else.

Hello everyone,
The ICS Port Progress report
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383942)
was updated a short while ago,
Now the LG Optimus 2x doest show up anymore =(
Did they canceled the develpoment for the O2x?
Why did they do it? =( It was already on the third Alpha.
I know the G2X is still there and its also in 3rd Alpha but before the update there was a seperate version for the O2x.
Is it the same now?
Also i know that the discussion thread was closed because of some idiots spamming useless crap in there..
thanks for any answer
cheers
I don't think there is any point in continuing untill nvidia release the needed drivers otherwise it just isn't possible, they are just fighting a losing battle wont be able to get priority features to work without them.
The G2x is still there, so i wouldn't worry much.
Hello!
No, they are still in development...
BTW: There is an existing threat on this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21251693#post21251693
You need to be a little more patient. The devs are doing this for free in their free time and I am pretty sure they all have jobs and family and lot of other things to do.
...but I am still pretty sure their will be a working CM9 before LG with its paid dev staff will release an ICS port.

Hello!
Maybe...we don't know. But it would speed up things considerably no doubt.
Nvidia said they would release driver for ICS Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 devices early this year - but they did not give a specific date. Lets hope early this year means soon...
But the question was is the ICS Port cancelled - and the answer is no...

@thejoker has got the main point.
The next best phone at 220$ is moto g which dropped 20$ after mi 3 release.
Except that the only choice is Asus zenfone
The cheapest SD 800 phone is nexus 5. Which still costs almost 500$
A used one costs 400$
This is the only device we can get and let's see what happens. It takes a few secs for sign up.

It doesn't matter if they are or not. They are required by law to release it upon device release.
No big surprise they lose most to aosp not a lot of trust for a closed sourced distro that one day had nothing and then the next had enough capital to start a company. Makes me wonder if other rumors are true.
I created this hashtag so those of us who are still waiting for the kernel sources to be pushed out for OP3/3T, twelve days after the official update to Nougat, can make an active affirmation on Twitter, Facebook, reddit, Instagram and so on... in an organized way.

I'm not trying to start a discussion here, it has already started on development threads.

It's not about spamming. It's about asking for the sources. If they drop them before sending the first units when releasing a device they should do the same for new system updates.
Paranoid me is thinking that they dropped Nougat, everyone updated... Gathering data for weeks, going to throw another update our way and release sources after they scrubbed the data suckers.
