Best camera settings for every day shots? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember reading somewhere in this forum someone mentioning that there is a good tweak to make most shots better, something about contrast/sharpness. Am I read in assuming there is a settings tweak to make things more consistent?
What is it?
Thanks!

i use default and take great pics

Is there a way to turn on auto enhancement while taking pictures too. Thnx

A lot of people like using -1 sharpness.

it's definitely SOLID by default, especially if you use the enhance tool sometimes. But there are times when things can seem washed out.

From my limited experience:
-1 Sharpness. You can always manually sharpen later.
Contrast +1 or +2 for outdoor shots. Alteratively, leave at default and use Auto Enhance later.
This guide is a good place to start:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/HTC-One-UltraPixel-camera-tips-and-tricks-review_id41691

-1 Sharpness, +1 Contrast and -1 Exposure for bright outdoors. Night mode or HRD + Auto Flash for really dark areas.
And any "Arena" websites are never trustworthy. 100% Samsung bias with hardly any technical knowledge of how software + hardware work together.

Thanks guys, definitely seeing some improvements with the above. After playing around a lot I think either making the above tweaks or using auto enhance works. They produce very similar results.

Camera

What is everyone's thought of the camera? I've read a couple of articles and they just don't rate the camera well. Thanks for anyone who can give an honest response to whether the camera is just all hype.

In my opinion I don't think it's something to get exciting over. Yes it does perform well in lowlight, but lacks detail in well lit images compared to most other phones. I'd honestly prefer just a regular 13 megapixel camera, but I really don't take many photos so it doesn't bother me much. If I want great images ill take a dedicated camera with me. Besides the lack of detail, I think all the features that it comes with and Zoe is really cool. Once I get my hands on the device ill know if the extra features it carries will be enough for me to forget about the lack of detail in images in well lit images.

Having used it for a few seconds I think the sensor is great, definitely a step in the right direction. The problem is HTC's overly aggressive noise reduction algorithm that smooths over all of the details inherent in the picture. If you could turn it down so there was some more noise/grain I think most people would say that this is the best camera phone sensor on the market besides maybe the Nokia PureView (which I have not seen in person). The dynamic range is seriously point and shoot good and the low light images speak for themselves.

[REQ] improve stock camera

instead of posting "awesome" pictures this phone takes, can we face it that the camera is not one of the best and maybe somebody can help modify some values in order to fix it? if one uses motorola stock camera for example it is obvious that it takes way better pictures than the stock camera our phone comes with, especially in low light environments. thanks!

It's not one of the best and neither has anyone claimed it to be the best. It takes decent quality pictures. And frankly for the price it sells it has
a pretty good performace to cost ratio. If you want bette camera's you should look at HTC One, Xperia Z which have better sensors in them.
Picture quality is mostly dependent on sensor used and not much can be done by changing couple of values here and there.
On a side note, Vic Gundotra has said they are planning something big with camera's. So lets wait and watch what they do.
Have you tried using her mode for low light

[REQ] search before posting
Camera video quality increase (AVC profile high! & level 4) (kernel included!)
Speaker + camera quality.
[TIP] Camera color temperature
NEXUS 4 Camera Issue.. Same as Iphone5
Just because you typed [REQ] at the front of your thread doesn't make it any different than the dozen or so camera threads that already exist.

Thank you
It's all subjective. You will want -1 Sharpness however the +1 Contrast looks wrong to me and isn't necessary

The camera has really natural colours. Bumping up the contrast takes away detail and makes the colours less natural

ok thanks but one thing tho htc pics looks bit less saturated
It's not undersaturated. It's the actual color of the scene. We're just used to oversaturation in just about everything we have
Contrast -1
Saturation and Sharpness +1
Wow, I would avoid that particular combination. Those seem almost the opposite of settings commonly suggested around here. Can you post any sample pictures made with those settings?

doesnt this phone have a automatic setting?
Tbh, I've taken some fantastic pictures without adjusting any settings at all, the key is what you focus on for me, under and overexposed are easy to achieve if you focus where you want to focus lol

I agree the post from MacHeadz.
When you think your camera settings are good and the pictures looking well, others could think the opposite.
So all of these settings are subjective.
The best thing is trying out which settings are perfect for you.

What screen mode are you using?

As with previous Samsung devices you can choose between various display modes, some are more accurate than others and different people prefer different look. Which mode are you running?
Adaptive display- Far too saturated colors, white point is too high(blue)
AMOLED Cinema- less saturated than Adaptive display but white point is still too high
AMOLED Photo- colors are slightly too saturated, white point is pretty good(right around 6.5k).
Basic- This is suppose to be the most accurate mode according to display mate but the UI and icons look washed out(perhaps because the UI colors were designed with very high saturation in mind?) . This mode is great for photos and videos though.
Update - I've started using basic mode. It took much longer than expected to get use to it but once I did I won't look back.
I'm using cinema as I think it looks the best
I personally always go for the most technically accurate, which is funny cause it's called basic mode lol.
I just use adaptive. Then it aaaaaaaaaadapts. Which is fine. Basic is too washed out for me. Maybe Ill do a week basic and see if it grows on me, though.

I don't think adaptive display does a great job at adapting lol at least not from what I have seen....I've compared Note 4s side by side at work and adaptive doesn't really seem to adapt at all regardless of the type of media that is being displayed, still looks far to saturated and the white point is too high. Some people like that though which is why it's set to that by default.

I though the same thing as well, at first. Cinema mode looked more like my Galaxy S4 which I was use to. I decided to give photo mode a go though since its significantly more accurate and it grew on me after a few hours. It takes a while for your eyes and brain to readjust.
Yeah I think I'll try out basic for a while and see if it grows on me.
I've just switched to basic. I used the equivalent of it on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 which also had an amoled display and I soon got used to the correct colours. Every time the phone rebooted it would start in the default before switching and you could see just how over saturated the colours are.

Yeah, same here. After using the stock color mode for years, it took me a while to get used to the accurate colors. But once I did, I could see the difference in how over saturated the colors were on stock mode. But it's definitely a preference, some people like the colors to pop.
Oversaturated colors are the best thing about AMOLED in my opinion.
Still using basic here. HAHAHAHA. But planning to try Cinema soon
I use adapted display. Don't care how accuracy color is Basic, it just wash out to me.
Cinema is crazy saturation.
Photo mode a bit yellowish, too warm.
I like cinemas cool color as photo is too warm for my tastes. I never use adaptive and basic looks off to me.

Trying with adaptative... will see how it behaves or I'll go back to Cinema.
Cinema for the best white.
Using Cinema, loving it!
Do you think adaptative display, for obvius reasons, consumes more battery than the others?
I use photo for now because I like the high saturation that comes with it (it's not that high anyway since I use it dimmed back a bit).

Actually its supposed to save on battery power.

[APK][MOD] Lcamera with longer exposure times for low light use

Found this insane camera app over at the Nexus 5x app threads. Tested it myself and it's working great. My only complaint about the 6p camera was its maximum 0.2 sec exposure. By using this app, the exposure time can be increased up to 5 secs. Awesome!

What are the optimal settings u use with this app? I don't know much about cameras.

As with all cameras, it depends on what you are trying to shoot. As a rule of thumb, try to keep a low ISO number and adjust exposure time accordingly.
Really nice! Had been looking for a camera app like this. It feels a bit buggy but it works.
