If you can reopen download mode, reflash everything through Odin.

You can't possibly hard brick your phone using Odin and the official Samsung ROM unless you've ticked something in Odin like Nand Erase all, Flash Lock, T Flash... You can only soft brick it in which case you simply reboot into download mode and reflash the ROM.

Emm, and why did you do that?
Id recommend to go and reading flashing guide (pinned topic). Helps a lot.
Because I need to flash captivate kernel afterwards. I have to put phone in download mode after flashing jpk pda and csc. I use att captivate
Reboot with the button combo for download mode should work.

Yep, so it does here.
Yeah imma just let it reboot and put in download mode instead of taking out battery and put in download mode again as most people tell to do.
Release the buttons after the screen turns black, then you'll restart the phone normally, .. atleast it suppose too ;/
edit; i tried and did it before i posted this!

Oh. Than yeah, probably just hold power button.
Btw, im obviously not very competent in flashing captivate, but i would think that vibrant is somewhat closer on firmware side than international (JI6 froyo, or something if im not mistaken).
I'm... actually rather unsure of why you're so averted to just removing the battery
Thread moved to Q&A.

[Q] download mode

two questions. can i unplug the captivate from the pc while in download mode to change usb ports. and is there away to get the phone out of download mode without flashing the rom. i was going to flash the rom and odin will not recognize the phone.
As long as you aren't in the middle of a flash, yes. Although you may have to put it back into download mode to make it be recognized, I'm not sure. To abort, just pull out the battery.

+1 to this
technically yes
But I don't suggest doing that.
It usually use more battery power than usual, so it is better to charge while it is running
I thing you can press power+volume up/down like if you go to recovery I think that would work don't turn it off cause that's how I got mine in USB+computer disconnection mode which I could have to put it back to download mode and then flash a ROM to come out of that....

My Galaxy SI, DOESN'T turn on.

Hello Guys,
I was flashing my SI, two weeks ago and it got frozen, so I had to take my battery out. After that, my phone doesn't turn on, I've tried everything, even USB jig. But It's dead still.
I also tried the USB jig into my Galaxy SII and into my friend's Galaxy SI, It worked perfectly. (just to make sure that the problem is in my phone)
Is there something else that I could try to do?
Thank you, Lucas.
does your phone boots into download mode or recovery??

I've tried put into download mode, so many times and didn't work. That's why I bought an USB jig, even plugging the usb jig it doesn't boot into download mode :/
I have done flashing into my Galaxy SII and twice into my galaxy SI. But, the last time, which was the third time, I did something wrong. (By the way, I was flashing to official room)
Try removing the battery, press the 3 button combo and put the battery back in while you're holding the buttons (you will need some help I guess). Try the same with the JIG.
Edit/ What exactly went wrong?
Okay, I'll try. Tell you if it worked later. Need get some charge.
Thanks a lot.
I've tried and it didn't work.
Thanks for your help.

Your welcome!
Did you update the bootloader while flashing? Actually it's really hard to brick an SGS completely... Do you remember what exactly you did when you flashed the phone?
The last chance would be JTAG (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7edUXE7jLg).
Regards!
What happens when u try to recharge. Does the battery icon show?
try to recharge the phone for an hour.then pull the battery, leave it out for an hour. Put it back and try download mode. Last chance, before jtag,i think
Well, while I was flashing with odin I probably used an incorrect room and it got frozen. I don't know why I took the battery out.. I could just wait and put it to flash again.
Anyway I watched the video and I gave up. I don't have those stuffs and I won't spend money with a £120 phone.
Thanks once more. I'm really thankful.
Nope, whatever I do my phone doesn't show anything. I did charge my battery for few hours and the phone got hot (normally, as all phones does while charging) and I tried put into download mode and didn't work.
Thank you, Lucas.
may be..there is only one way..giving ur fone in samsung..
obviously u will have to lose few bucks from ur pocket..

Bricked Device

Guys I am sorry to disturb you all !!!
First of all it is an AT&T unlocked Galaxy S Captivate phone in India.
It had UCKK4 ROM.
So I tried to flash CornKernel_UCKK4_v70A.tar via odin 1.85 rightly placed the file in PDA.
The ODIN failed and gives the error, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and Try again" :crying:
I will be highly thankful to helps. :good::good:
Before flashing the kernel, I'm assuming you had put the phone into download mode, correct?
If not, make sure you shut the phone down, then hold Vol- and Vol+ and insert the USB cable. Once it's in download mode, try flashing again.
If that doesn't work, take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help" thread in my signature for some more ideas.

Thanks for your reply.
I had been in recovery mode. With drivers installed.
I have tried Vol+/Vol- method about 10 times but always have the same screen.
NO DOWNLOAD mode.
Even tried the jig I used for SGS but now with jig also the download mode is not coming.
Btw I am very very thankful for your reply.
That's odd. A jig that's putting 301 kOhm between pins 4 and 5 should kick you into download mode no matter what.
What exactly happens when you hold V+/V- and insert the USB cable? And are you doing it with the phone completely off?
Also, if you are able to get into recovery, is it stock recovery (with 4 options to choose from) or ClockworkMod Recovery (with about 7-9 options to choose from)?
If it's Clockworkmod recovery (CWM), mtcarey released a CWM-flashable version of his kernel that you could try.
Just to be sure...
Battery Out
USB Plugged in
Hold vol+ and vol-
Insert battery
Should take you into download mode

I am using jig when the phone is off but battery in place. Some how I get the same screen.
To get recovery mode? All the buttons (V+/- and Power) pressed simultaneously. Right?
To be frank its my friends phone. I got SGS. :silly:
Attached in next reply.

You can use that screen as a download mode screen. Open odin first, then plug phone in while it is already at that screen.

The instructions aren't necessarily wrong, it's dependent on whether you have the I9000 or I897 bootloaders. The steps you've described are specific to the I9000 bootloaders - the steps mentioned above are for the I897.

If you're wanting to try ICS, take a look in the development section. There are several roms to try out - just look around and see if any of them look appealing to you.
Just as a word of caution, look for the "Encryption Unsuccessful" thread and read about that error message in there. ICS roms have a small chance of causing a serious issue for your phone, and it would be good to make sure you know the risks before flashing.
Other than that, just know that you'll probably have to flash your first ICS rom twice - once to set up the framework, and the second time to fully install the rom.

Try using 1.85. I believe that is the newest version. Make sure you're using a good cable. One of my captivates would always take 2 tries to flash kernels. Not sure why.
You could also use the one-click found in the EXE folder of the utility in my signature

All your utilities work like .. Super duper. :good::good:

after flashing, the phone does not power up. nothing.

i think it's my fault, but maybe i can do something to unbreak it?
here it goes.
i downloaded the latest build from this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2199575
when first i entered CWM and wiping everything, i try to flash the rom, but the installation aborted with 'error 7'
so i look for error 7 in google, and get into this video which explain how to bypass it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW1znjDLe-k
i did exactly what he said, and remove the assert till the ' ; '
after that i ziped it back and send it again to my phone, and again get into CWM.
the installation went OK.
it said so .
i did a reboot, but then the phone didn't power up.
he is very dead
is it final, or i can do something to revive it?
thanks!
Status 7 error is due to a corrupt rom file. Download the rom again, place it on sd card & flash again.
