Sleep mode - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys, what is this? Anyone know how it works? There is limited info on HTC's site.
Does it only shut off the mobile data? Will I stop receiving email when it kicks on? What turns it off? Unlocking the screen, or does it read the accelerometer?
Anyone know? It was on by default. Phone seems fine, but I don't want to stop receiving email whenever my phone sits for a while.

YES???
No really when you phone sits for longs periods without use it will turn off mobile data wifi etc... Once you turn on the screen it will turn everything back on. This is the new smart dormant mode or night mode for HTC. I hope imagine its has some type of adaptive algorithm that will know when to conserve power and when not too but I'm sure I'm reaching too far.

I'm not sure if it has a smart algorithm...from what I've felt is simply turns off the data connection around half an hour after I turn my screen off. So far though it hasn't affected my use of the phone though I guess the real difference should come when you sleep at night.

TyTN II waking randomly

Hey everyone
Has anyone else noticed that their TyTN II wakes from standby when switching between GPRS and 3G. At least I think this is why mine appears to wake up randomly! It will be sat on my desk in standby mode and then the screen will switch on and the signal strength bars will move.
I've checked to make sure nothing is running in the background and performed a soft reboot.
Any ideas?
Hi
The Kaiser does turn on at least once every hour (some house keeping tasks), and will turn on if the mobile signal is lost. However these on's are in unattended mode which means the device appears off to the owner so the screen will not come on.
If you have some software that likes to do work or updates the today page for example, that software may be detecting the device has turned on and in order to get your attention or just through bad programming, issues a power announcement to say turn on proper, hence the display lights up!
Regards
Phil
Thanks for the info, I'll have a look what I have on there and try and isolate what is causing the power ups.
Cheers for the help.
If you have sprite backup installed with the auto backup on low power option that causes occasional power ups to enable the power check.
I may have solved this issue. After uninstalling enAlarm the phone, no longer appears to be waking. I'm still monitoring it though
i have the same problem when im signed on to AIM. Once i sign off it stops waking up, but if its on it'll wake up every 5 minutes or so, and it is in fact annoying. Havent found out the solution for it yet so i just dont really use it that often

it's when a friend log's in or out of AIM.. it's a paint, rediculious and ATT refuses to get rid of OZ messanger and use a real one.
here's the kicker. it supposed to use TEXT , but when a friend logs in or out, the message is sent to your phone, and then DATA brings up the list..
STUPID and ignorant of ATT but,. big companies do what they want!
I have been having the same problem as well. I just installed this DeviceLock program:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305402
If you enable the "Lock on Wake" option, the device will be locked when it wakes up, so the backlight stays off and you won't call anyone by accidentally hitting buttons.
Also, I ran across this related thread you might want to check out (basically talking about the same thing, but for the Tilt):

Backlight turns on randomly

Does anyone else have this happening my screen will randomly turn on after i press the button on the top to turn it off? it is very annoying at night it makes me think i have an incoming call or text message and being that Im on call 24x7 sometimes have to check it everytime it happenes which is about ever 10 to 15 minutes????
I searched on here already and couldnt find anything?????
any help?????
yes, that's probably normal behaviour, since the SCREENN-OFF button also works as SCREEN-ON button, whatever necessary...
but my screen doesn't turn on randomly...
my tip: just put your device in a thick wool sock and put it face down on your desk ;-)...
another possibility is, that if you charge it over night and the plug isn't fitting right then the screen may turn off because it constantly thinks it's plugged in and out...
Best Luck and nice dreams
Regards
not only when plugged in
actually it doesnt only happen when the phone is plugged in it happenes all the time

mine does it too upon occasion. i think it has to do woth background processes running, or your phone is roaming for alternative towers.
mine does it too. I have the Sprint CDMA version. Someone on a different forum thought it might be the phone looking for a signal. But no one was really sure. Haven't been able to find much useful info on it anywhere.
it's switching towers...my Mogul did it too.
is there any way to make it stop
In some of the aboce cases it can be that someone is trying to make a video call to you while Phone skin is disabled.
I also have this problem. My screen will turn on from time to time without any obvious reason. It's especially annoying at night... I have my phone in a cradle on my nightstand, so when the screen comes on the whole room lights up! I've resorted to keeping a shirt over it at night.
I tried setting the phone to 100% roaming since my Sprint signal is low in my apartment and I read somewhere that the phone will turn on when it switches towers/service, but alas it did not help me.
ANY IDEAS FOR A FIX?

Diamond keeps "waking"

My phone is constantly waking up when not in use. There is no obvious activity that i see, such as email,SMS etc. I was told possibly when the signal or towers change it wakes up?
All i know is im at work and the darn phone keeps lighting up. Im driving at night and it's lighting up. it's in my pocket and im dialing my last call! This is also killing my batteries!
Is anyone having this problem?? Can this be fixed?? registry tweak?? Im so angry with this phone because of this. otherwise i really like this phone.
Thanks.
I had the problem of dialing when in my pocket... and a slightly different error with the lights.. the ones around the dial just won't switch off even when all the messages and alerts are cleared.
I've found that if you lock the screen so that you can only use the power button, it solves this as it's easy to unlock the phone from ur pocket (I've had it in a jacket pocket and it's done it!)
Should solve it!...
As for the lighting up... have you tried adjusting the power options for optimum battery as this solved the same issue on my Touch Cruise.
you can use TouchLockPro for preventing bogus calls. Are you sure it does not awake on buton presses, a windows mobile setting.
wake up woes
Same issue here. It seems the CDMA Sprint Diamond wakes up on new SMS or when switching cell towers and there is no way to disable that regardless of what ROM you're using. It's ridiculous... and it is my only major problem with the phone. Hopefully someone will find a better solution. Until then Locking the phone will have to suffice.
ive been using the lock feature. the only thing is it often gets "stuck" in lock mode. i will turn on the phone the backlight would be dim - like in lock mode. i can use the phone but it wont come out of the "dim" mode until i take out the battery and put it back in.
separately,
I wonder if i was using the diamond phone from another provider if i would have the same "waking" problems?

I have the same problem. The phone wakes up all the time by itself. It is a problem with the defective power buttons that come on the Diamonds. No fix for that so far that I know of. It is a hardware problem, I think.
Mine wakes up when switching between home and roaming towers. Not sure about switching home to home towers or roaming to roaming. I also had my power button being bumped on from time to time; I'd take out my phone to find it had tried to dial someone, adjust the clock, etc. Very annoying.
Pocket Shield is amazing; it's the only lock app I can find that does what my Treo's always did: unlock on center button.
Works wonderfully well!
Before I upgrade my 1.93 CSL ROM to the 2.0x CSL ROM, it also always woke up itself...
After I upgarded my ROM (i.e. a hard reset) problem gone... So I think that's not a hardware problem...
Yet at this moment I'm still unclear which program caused that problem...
I've been using the locking program S2U2 which is free and it works beautifully.

The one thing I dislike about my N7

I have sync off, maps off, gps off, location off... and wifi set to "never on" during standby mode...
But... it takes a good 15 minutes before wifi actually turns off, which wastes a little bit of battery life
Any way around this? Eg, make it turn off wifi quicker?

Uhmmm well maybe if you were able to provide more info like rom, rooted or not, kernel etc. we'll be able to help you out more.
As of now i can tell that is not right, mine goes off immediately.
Yes, more info would help however try this go to your settings and in the WiFi settings forget your network then restart your router and re-boot your tablet off/on (not stand by) then go to the wireless settings log back in to your network.

Wow, why do people care about such small things? It's not like it drains half of your battery.

Well, because it is not a normal thing to happen. So if it is not normal, it is a sign of a possibly bigger problem that needs to be addressed. If he is on a custom rom, then the dev would be notified to see if its on his end, to fix in the next release. And those are just two reasons why people "care about such small things". Welcome to xda. This is where all the small things are fixed. Its kinda the point.
Are you sure that's not normal? All my android devices take 10-15 min to turn the WiFi off.
It'll have a negligible effect on your battery life but if you really want it to turn off faster, the green power app on the store allows you to turn off WiFi instantly.
That's normal. If you have tasker or other similar app you can set it to turn off WiFi on lock or if you have a magnetic case, sit it to turn off WiFi when it's closed.

Don't think that's normal, wifi always turns off almost instantly for me
wifi turns off almost instantly here too. 10-15 minutes to turn off wifi is not normal in any situation. op, maybe a little background? stock or rooted? rom/kernel? mods flashed? themes?
The WiFi on my N7 turns off instantly. It did when it was stock unrooted, it did when it was stock rooted, and it does with Paranoid Android. Not sure what the issue may be. Unless you are running a different kernel.
It is normal.
I'm on CM10 and in the advanced WiFi menu is an option to alter the default WiFi timeout from 15mins to other values. I'm unsure if that option is only available in CM10 but I think its also available in stock, can someone on stock clarify that.
The advanced menu is definitely available on stock 4.1.2 I'm just unsure if the timeout is configurable or not.
But WiFi always takes some minutes to disconnect in case you decide to hit the power button to put the device on standby and then 2secs later decide to use it again.
Test it by just hitting the power button and 10secs later hit it again and look at the WiFi icon, it will show its connected. Now do it again but wait 20mins and then hit power and look at the icon and it will show its disconnected.
I guess the timeout can be affected by apps that use WiFi when the screen is off and how quickly the device sleeps when the screen is off etc.
Stock, rooted. Using Notification Toggle, my wifi turns off immediately when I touch the wifi toggle icon.

Is the concept of this thread that hard to the understand...
...of course it turns off immediately if you hit a toggle, that's the point, this post is about the timeout value, ie the WiFi timeout when the screen is turned off.

Screen won't stay off, keeps waking up

This has has happened to me 3 times so far while I am plugged in charging overnight. I'll wake up to see that my screen is on. If I hit the power button it will shut off, and then come back on in a second or two. Even if I flip it upside down so the screen is down, I can still see that the screen is still coming on. The only way for me to fix it is to reboot the phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

what your probably referring too is active display. Which if you want off. I also have off is under the moto app
No, that's not it. I'm not talking about how it will come on every 3 seconds when you have a notification. I'm talking about turning fully back on so I can see my home screen.

Nope, that isn't checked. And normally this isn't an issue, only a sporadic thing.
Happened to me again last night, woke up and noticed the screen staying on around 5am. I tried disabling the active display but it didn't stop the screen from coming back on after I shut it off. I did find that when I unplugged it from my charger, the screen stopped coming back on. Does this give anyone any clues?

Its something you have installed.

I believe Safe Mode is still in Android. Try it. Warning: it will break your home screen widget layout.
If it is something that I installed, how can safe mode help me determine what it is?

The same reason it does in Windows. You use it to narrow down what is causing it. If Safe Mode cures the issue, you know for sure its an installed app. From there, process of elimination.
Right?
Just got the phone and have had this happen a few times also. No apps installed that I didn't have on my previous phone.
After a bit more testing I have more information. It seems like it only happens when it is plugged in and has reached a full charge. Once I unplug the phone from its charger, the screen stops coming on by itself. This is still some kind of bug, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to keep the screen off even if it is fully charged and plugged in.

Well I didn't think it was something that effected everyone, otherwise I would have found a thread on it. I'm going to try using a different charger tonight and see if that makes a difference.

Fair enough. I still think its an app installed though.
By any chance do you have the notification enabled for when the battery is fully charged?

No, I don't.
Ive tried this for two nights and it doesnt seem like I've had this issue since using a different charger...
My problem turned out to be the button accidentally being pressed and the screen lock setting being set to "5 seconds" after hitting the button, as opposed to right away. So the screen was going off, it wasn't locking, and an errand touch of the side of the phone while moving it would make the screen come back on without seeing the lock screen again because it was within the 5 seconds that the setting enabled. I was not familiar with this setting being on my previous phone and the Turbo was set to this by default. Hope this helps.
I agree that it is a bug, however, I was wondering, is there a way to get rid of that screen entirely? Frankly all that screen does for me is waste the battery, so being able to not have it at all would be great.
