Hi there
I think I may know the answer to this but figured it cant hurt to ask anyway
I am about to update/change my ROM, and do not want to lose all my settings and installed programs when I do so
I have a number of programs that have historical data that if I lose I would be most upset.
is the only way to do this to use Titanium backup or some such - would rather not have to cough up £5 if I can avoid it - yes I am cheap.
am planning to upgrade from Assaye-V1.x to Assaye-V2.0
and stick the doomkernel kernel on whilst I am at it.
I have already donte a cwm backup, but obviosly that will not let me import all the installed stuff again
any help, tips etc much appreciated
thanks
nat
Use the free version of titanium backup.
Good to see you trying my rom

well thanks for making it, nice and clean - all that I want really. only problem I have is when on headphones sometimes the walkman stops playing until I press the power button. most odd but not a showstopper.
will try TB and do the update, thanks for the reply

why not? just go to backup and restore->advanced restore then choose your backup and select to restore data only

look at this, you can read all about it.
with clockworkmod recovery.
it's realy the best way to backup you'r rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007863
You don't need to backup the ROM, but if you want to be able to recover all your apps and system data then pickup Titanium Backup from the market, and do yourself a favor and get the paid version its totally worth it. If you get the free version its slower, also you have to verify each app that it restores as it goes through the process. With the paid version its faster and you don't need to verify each app as it restores. Hope that helps!
titanium is only to backup you'r software.
wil not help if you mess up you'r rom
i want a thing to get back waranty it i need..

Yes, you will lose your data almost every way you do it. If your phone is rooted you can backup all your app's with Titanium backup, the pro version allows you to batch backup everything and then batch restore everything including your saved games. The free version means you have to do them one at time. Hope this helps
Last time when i did it with Kies.. I dont remember losing anything except Msg, Contacts and phone records. Well i think i did not even have a game installed!
Did it only a week after buying the cell phone. Since then its very slow!
As shrapnel2 said there is always a chance of losing information when you upgrade either using Kies or Odin. Make a backup before you do anything.
Better safe than sorry!!!
I would definitely back it up. So after the update do i have to reinstall the games once again or they would be there? This is the first time i am doing it with the phone loaded with data that's why the questions!

They might be missing after the update but if you use Titanium Backup you can restore all of your games and the data to go with them in a single operation.
I see that Titanium Backup requires root. I have to root my phone.
When moving app data from froyo to gingerbread the data can often cause conflicts, so regardless of wether you backup or not my advice is not to restore data, but many have got away with it, it really comes down to an app by app scenario, and yes, titanium needs root to backup data

Yeah i got my phone rooted. Used the SuperOneClick Root App.
Now since you say that, even Titanium Backup tool is not fool proof to back up the data and restore it on to Gingerbread, you have put me in a lot of dilemma!
I have a few games in to which i have put in months of effort and patience, and i dont want to start playing all over again! Especially a game called Islanders!!
well at the end of the day it is up to you.
I always like to be up to date with my firmwares but if you are happy with Froyo and are that concerned about losing your saved game info you might be better off staying where you are...
That is the problem! Even i would like to stay up to date. But this data portability issue is something that is bothering me. I'll give Titanium back up a shot and see what it does. If it doesn't work i'll be giving it pretty bad review on the market!
coultdnt he just make a NANDROID and the unroot, upgrade, root and advanced restore data

i want to downgrade according to Sijav method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590174
for downgrading you have to erase the entire system. it's not like just updating. wiping datas is probably required too

Titanium Backup needs root, right ? Maybe with Sony PC Companion, depending on the data you want to save.

my apps and there datas because i dont want to reinstall all my apps again from zero point.
If your phone is backup with your google account, all the apps will be automatically installed after flashing. But you still need to backup the data of your apps if needed...
in settings > backup and reset you have the option to export datas to google servers. apps will downloaded again, as well as your contacts. be sure they are synchronised in settings > accounts > google, just in case...
I've never used pcc for saving so I can't help for this.

i am a newbie dealing with Android as I have been BB user for a long time, although I can get around with rooting devices but the problem is that while rooting my Xperia SP while bootloader unlock was allowed but I didn't fully read following thread from beginning (stupid I know although I am an engineer )
now while reading your post someone said something about losing DRM keys and Bravia engine which is now seems very worrying to me and I can see in Settings>Display that Bravia engine is selected but I am not sure now if it really works
maybe it is not working as while receiving calls contact pictures imported from Facebook are blurry all the time, whatever i do to enhance them but they are still blurry
any help to restore Bravia engine and why i should lose it as I am following sony official method of unlocking bootloader

Official or Unofficial, you lose the DRM keys + BE2 on unlocking BL.
Only method is backing up a TA partition BEFORE unlocking... then when you have unlocked and restore the TA partition, the BL gets LOCKED and all DRM+BE2 are back working.
OK I understand but I didn't take backup before unlocking bootloader so I have even lost drm keys forever
but what if I installed custom rom will I get back BE2?
Sent from my C5303 using Tapatalk
Nope. It will just be a placeholder. You need those drm keys for BE2

Another thing I would like to know before I install custom rom how do I backup my current rom and internal storage?

Frankly, you dont need to backup your stock rom... just use the backup n restore app to make backup of all important stuff. it will be stored on SD card...
Then do whatever you want... when you want to return, just lock the bootloader, run sony update service and you will be back to stock...
Someone confirm what i wrote above...

full backup of the phone require an app like titanium backup. Unfortunately those app generally require root privileges. Btw contacts are normally saved to your google account. You can backup your user preferences and app settings with htc backup. You can also restore app from google play store. You can backup all your media directly on your pc.

after you unlocked bootloader and flashed a custom recovery, make sure to make a nandroid backup of your phone before starting to flash stuff. So if something goes wrong you can restore from that backup. Make sure also to make a copy of that backup to your computer.
beware that when you will unlock your bootloader.......it will wipe your apps......just do some more reading before starting......cheers!

this is an app to backup ur apps. Install the program on ur pc nd back up. the backup will be created in a folder called Carbon in the root of the phone internal storage. MAKE SURE THAT YOU COPY THIS FOLDER TO UR PC COZ THE INTERNAL STORAGE WILL GET WIPED AFTER A BOOTLOADER UNLOCK
To backup call logs,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore
Just drag nd drop the media to ur PC(music, pics, movies, etc.)
If anyone like me, reading this way later...
There seams to be some apps that doesn't allow Helium to backup it's data. App tells you to ask the individual developer to allow backups for the app in question. I did it anyway, because none of the apps that was disallowed had data you'd want or shouldn't backup. Mostly banking stuff and some secure conversation apps. There are also a bunch of apps just failing to backup...might be something I did wrong...
