Hey everyones,
I've searched a lot and never found on XDA what I searched so I decided to start this thread. It's from another author, from another website, so I don't take any credit on this but I think it will be useful for you as it was for me.
I'm not responsible for any bricked device/broken or whatever. Be sure to make a NANDROID backup before running theses changes.
Before we get started, there are a few prerequisites for the following hack to work. You need (1) a Nexus 4 that has been rooted (2) you’re with Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Kodoo, Virgin, MTS, Sasktel, Telcel (and for some lucky users T-Mobile) –for greater certainty, this guide will definitely NOT work with Wind Mobile, Mobilicity or Public Mobile in Canada or AT&T, Verizon, etc.), (3) you have an LTE sim card–you cannot use a regular sim card and (4) your data plan supports LTE (most data plans are LTE enabled, but some really old ones do not, ask your carrier if you are unsure).
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
You will also need to be ROOTED and have the .33 baseband or older(if you don't go flash it:
Nexus 4 Basebands collection)
It should look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Here are few line of code you'll need to have when we will begin. Be sure to note these, without any error in it:
Code:
telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1
ro.telephony.default_network=9
ro.ril.def.preferred.network=9
OK! Now we are good to go.
1. Download a root browser (I personnally like Root Browser. It simple and fast enough.)
2. We need to edit a file named build.prop. For this, you need to go
Code:
/system/
3. Long click on it, it will popup a menu. Select "Open As" and select a text editor.
4. Find the line:
Code:
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0
5. Replace (I mean, erase it) it with the three lines we wrote down before.
6. Save the file.
We are at 50% of the job now.
7. In the next few steps, we’re going to add your carrier’s LTE APNs directly into Android (if you’re with Rogers or Fido) because the build.prop trick only works if you don’t change the APN in Android. Therefore, if you’re with Bell, Telus, Virgin or Kodoo or Telcel (Mexico), you can likely safely skip this step as the APNs in the XML file are likely already correct (but you can check to make sure). If you’re with Fido or Rogers, you will have to modify the XML file as we do below. If you don’t know what your carrier’s APN settings are, you can visit this page to find your carrier and take note of the LTE APN settings. In our example below, we’ll be changing the APN under “Fido Default”.
8. Now we need to go to this location:
Code:
/system/etc/
9. Find a file named apns-conf.xml
10. Make a backup of it (Copy it to your sdcard for exemple).
11. This backup is really nice, because with this, we are going to change the APNs you need.
12. Plug your phone to your PC and open the XML file with notepad++ or any text editor of your choice.
(It should look like this)
13. Find your carrier and change the APN to the LTE APN you found before.
14. Save the file
15. Now move the file to /system/etc/
16. Last step, you must FACTORY RESET your phone by the phone itself or the hack will not work.
After that, you should see a 4G icon, meaning that everythings worked fine!
Gratz!
If not, restore your NANDROID backup.
Good luck!
There are few things you should know after this mod/hack. (FAQ)
1. Don't ever go to *#*#4636#*#* or it will just cancel all your hard work.
2. If you flash a new ROM, you'll need to redo all the steps.
3. Flashing a kernel doesn't ***k this hack.
4. LTE drains the battery pretty rapidely, don't whine you got a bad battery life.
5. It work with every roms, you only need to be rooted.
6. T-Mobile users need to do the APNs changes.
7. If your LTE Calls drops, go see here.
I'll keep updating the post. Don't worry, if something change, you'll know it.
You can post your Speedtest screenshots here too!

Thanks, But I did not found telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0. Will try when I have a diff rom
I setup LTE on my Nexus 4 with the stock rom without modifying the buildprop before and that caused 100% of the phone calls coming in to crash the dialer. Does this method have that problem too? I'm with koodo by the way.

Technically, there's a ROM prerequisite too, isn't there?
I don't know if it's just a T-Mobile thing but I thought ROMs such as ParanoidAndroid didn't work properly with older radios.

Stock or AOSP based roms need the changes that simobile details in this thread. Mind you that this isnt needed for CM10.1 or AOKP. As far as I know T-mobile is the only carrier that had this incall issue, so if your on t-mobile with .33 or older you need this.

MMSC- http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN type- default,supl,mms
APN protocol- IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol- IPv4/IPv6
The easiest way after crack flashing is to remember fast.t-mobile.com and protocols and just copy/paste MMSC and APN type from the default tmo apn

Name is "T-MOBILE US LTE"
APN is "fast.t-mobile.com
Everything else keep the same except APN protocol . change that to IPv4/IPv6
Save and you should be good.
Keep in mind I didn't do this hack to get my T-Mobile 4g lte to work. All I do is dial the number and change the network type to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (prl) which is what allows me to make calls without any drops . hope this helps

I had someone try to freeze TetheringGuard to see if it would work, but it didn't (WC's ICS build). I don't think this will be a valid process for the Vivid - I'm sure the devs have this in the back of their heads though. Patience, young padiwan. Have you tried Barnacle wifi tether or android wifi tether? I couldn't get either to work on wc's ICS build, but I don't know what ROM or android flavor you're running, so you might get different results

Install android_wifi_tether b11 (http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...ail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q=)
Go into settings and set your "Device Profile" to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM).
Tick the box for "Routing Fix"
Start Tethering
Connect from computer
Boom - tethered
Note: You may or may not need to use access control to allow your computer.
Note 2: It's very possible that you'll run into IP conflicts with the general setup. You might have to go to Change LAN and pick a new subnet.
Note 3: Problably not a bad idea to setup encryption
Note 4: I was initially getting DNS errors - don't know if it was Routing Fix that corrected it, or using OpenDNS DNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) was what fixed it. So, if after doing everything else, if it's still not working hardcode OpenDNS servers for DNS Servers on your wireless connection[/quote]

didn't work for me. After tapping "start tethering" it takes a while, about 30 seconds, and finally says "tethering started with errors, check log for details." when i try to check the log, it says "no log file down". I can't see anything from my ipad.
This happened for me before I switched profiles and enabled routing fix, but now works like a charm. What Rom are you using?

However, before trying wifi_tether, I deleted the tetheringguard service via titanium backup to see if that would let the hotspot work. It didn't, and it seemed to lockup the built in settings. I tried to change the apn type adding dun after default (default,dun) i got an error message that is restricted and can be only provided by the carrier. Im done with this ive tried everything you guys can think of. I need help. After reading through the G2 forums I found this and it also worked for the T-mobile G Flex.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51213845&postcount=43 I couldn't get the other method posted here to work at all. All credit goes to xda member mrgodai. Follow the instructions in the link provided and a script will automatically change the value to 0 on boot. You will still need to change the user agent to something mobile or in my case Safari browser. This only allows you to go over your tethering limit. If you don't have unlimted data then this will only work until you reach your data cap.https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher-for-c/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg?hl=en-USAlso make sure to edit your APN scroll down to the bottom where it says APN protocol: and make sure it is IPv4 not IPv6 and add "dun" to the line for APN type: default,supl,mms,dun
Outdated method below
Prerequisites
1. Rooted T-mobile G Flex
2. SQlite Editor app($2.99) probably a free alternative out there
3. Hotspot Widget from Google Play
Instructions
1. Open SQlite Editor look in - /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db then click global scroll down to field "tether_dun_required" edit the original value set 1 and change it to 0.
Note: Every time the phone reboots the original value defaults back to 1 so you will need to change the value back to 0 every time the phone reboots.
2. Only enable tether through the widget that you downloaded earlier. For some reason if you use the official t-mobile widget it won't work.
3. I don't have a working G Flex to test but you may have to use UA spoofer for chrome and set the browser to safari or something mobile.
Confirmed working on tmobile gflex i found this in g2 forum as well awesome . Only thing is u dont need the widget or at least i dont it works everytime right from the settings menu

---------- Post added at 03:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:43 AM ----------
I only ask because i only have 2.5 gigs for hotspot. And if i did this hack correctly i should not have unlimited?
If u do this hack u will have unlimited unresricted native tethering u wont get blocked afyer the 2.5
Sent from my LG-D959 using Tapatalk
Sweet! Thank you.
Yes you can over your limit with this hack
it goes through t-mobiles native hotpot app but some reason it crashes for me when I activate it through their official widget. That's why I use the one from the play store even though it opens up t-mobiles hotspot.
I did this hack when first posted and I have been re-doing after each boot. I have been monitoring the field setting "1" to a "0" to ensure it sticks and i like you said it does not stick after boot. Hence why I have been re-doing after each boot like instructed to in the OP. My issue is according to my T-Mobile account apk, that comes on the device, my hotspot tethering data has still increased from 2.3 g's to now 2.9 g's. It doesn't seem to be masking my use of the tethering. I'm using a hotspot widget toggle from the play store as instructed. I was under the impression that this would mask the use of tethering. Is this not correct or is this just to be able to use hotspot after the allotted amount that comes with which ever data plan you have?

Discovered this for my T-Mobile account apk to not see my data usage from hotspot ( in other words to mask using the hotspot) I had to go to my APN settings in your system settings/network and tethering/mobile networks/ access point names(APN) and create a new APN due to the unavailability to edit the stock one. I added new APN with everything set the same as the "T-Mobile LTE" apn that is set as default. Only changed is the "APN TYPE" add ",dun" to the end. So it should read as this
APN TYPE - default,mms,supl,dun
Make sure that you don't edit any other field and that the APN Protocol (just below APN TYPE) is set to IPV4.

I don't know. Went to mobile networks under settings and I've use 14 gbs of data under hotspot. Went to the t-mobile app and saw i reached the limit but that was before the hack was applied.
Changed the APN anyway like you said just in case but like I said I used 14 gb of data under hotspots. If t-mobile knew you were over your limit wouldn't you get the upsell page?

It does. I've already done the mod to services.jar (if it's the changing -0x1 to 0x1), and default-apn. Configurations to fast. T-Mobile,
I didn't notice what's needed in sec settings. I actually was uploading it tomorrow as flashable (with flash Gordon app) when I get back to the office where my laptop is. If you let me know the settings changes need I can take care of it to save you some work or I'll gladly send you the deodexEd settings when I get in tomorrow.

So the Sprint method does work? I have updated my thread because I have 3g tether working now. I was going to look and see if I could change the verification checks on the T-Mobile services, like what they do with at&t

I have a tethering plan so I don't know if tethering worked because the mod or my plan. The T-Mobile had the same lines in it as sprint... So combined with the apn changes usually needed on T-Mobile I assumed it should work. I was going to upload it so some without tethering could verify, but you seem to know what you're doing so I can just give you the unmodded versions and if you want my version as well. Whatever works for you.

I discovered this while digging around in the hidden menu. Accessed via dial pad in your phone apk by dialing 3845#*959#. (959 due to the 3 numbers in the device variant). Other carriers /variants use their last 3 accordingly. I don't know if this works for all carriers or not. I only have a D959.
First off let's learn why the "tether dun" option by using sqlite editor and changing the 1 to 0 doesn't work nor stick after reboot.
Carriers seem to have become wise to this hack since its been around from the first Moto RAZR XT912. And probably before that. Seems they have found a way to still tell whether or not you're tethering by monitoring the data stream and seeing the desktop user agent or style that is used by laptops and desktop PCs and/or other tablets use when tethering off of a devices hotspot.
So with that said there needs to be a way for carriers to disable this feature. So I went probing through my D959's hidden menu and found the option. I'm posting screen shots (hopefully in order of the method used) as well as my account page showing my hotspot usage has ran out at 3 gigs free that comes with my unlimited data.
I'm not responsible for your device or lack of following instructions to a "t". Its your phone and your choice to try or not.
With that said here we go:
First create new APN in your " access point names settings" to mirror that of your stock APN. And add to the APN type line - ",admin,dun"
The do the following :
1. Go to dail pad type in "3845#*959#
(The menu comes up)
2. Scroll to find option named " settings" click it
(Another menu pops up )
3. Scroll to find option "up sell url". Click it
(A smaller menu window pops up)
4. Chose " TMUS hastetheringoption". Click it
5. Back out like normal. I don't know if this matters but I use a 3rd party hotspot toggle as to not enter the T-Mobile hotspot apk.
6. Profit
Sorry to those of you who have trying with no luck due to I left out a step. My fault I apologize.

UPDATE: I have been using this script from the LG G2 forums on Jellybean 4.2.2 and all has been working great. Smanager works great at changing the 1 back to a 0 on boot. So no more having to do it manually.
LG G2 forums with script -
But since I've moved up to KitKat and still using said script, I got a message stating I've used all available data allowed for my WiFi hotspot. What? All available data? How could this be when I'm clearly changing the "tether_dun_required" -1 to a 0? Well I don't know if T-Mobile got wise to us or what. But I found another line in the same settings using sqlite editor called
"Package_verify_enabled". It also has a 1 (for true) out beside it. So being that I need my hotspot for my son to play xbox360 live, I changed it to a "0" . and what do ya know? I now have working WiFi hotspot and I tested this mod out for the entire Florida St. vs Louisville game tonight while streaming it to my Nexus 7 (2013) at work so all the co workers and I could watch what we thought and what seemed to be a Florida St. ∆$$ whipping but sadly enough Florida St. Pulled it out at the end. But on a good note, the WiFi hotspot hack still works.
Good luck

Awesome find! I was looking at that menu today, but wasn't sure which option to select. Great work!

It never stuck after reboot and I always had to change the user string agent but editing the tether dun required value worked for me.

Thanks for the response. I'm currently running stock kit Kat (when i upgraded it borked something with the ability to connect in different modes with my computer, i can only connect with the "pc software" option) (getting new one sent on Monday) so it can't be any frozen programs. Not sure what it could be though really cuz I've never really messed with the hidden menus on phones. Always had build props and custom roms to do that stuff for me.

I have no idea about the other variants of the g flex. I have T-Mobile d959. I'm not even sure if those options are the same in the other variants. I do believe the hidden menu is still accessible with the 3845#*your variants number# but beyond that have no idea.
UPDATE 4-27-14 :::
I've had my hotspot on all weekend watching YouTube, showbox, surfing the web, as well as my son has been doing the same and even had his Xbox 360 tethered thru it and my hotspot data amount is still sitting on 3.0 gigs according to t-mobile's built in apk that is linked to our accounts. The T-Mobile folks no the apk I'm speaking of. It doesn't update instantly but does do so at least twice a day or more. Here's a screen shot showing. Notice the dates.

And my data amount went up roughly 5 gigs. Man porn in HD is killing my data. Lmao. J/K folks. I got unlimited. Lmao. J/k. That's what my sons Xbox live will do to ya.

Oh h#ll no. Not man porn. Lmfao I got a good laugh out of that. I didn't even see the way it looked after I wrote it. Geeez that's classic.
Here's a screen shot. It wouldn't let me share it due to my Nexus 7 not being compatible.

Yyyeeeaaaa, this still won't work for me. I guess I'm not as fortunate as you or I'm doing something wrong. I actually haven't seen anyone confirm that this works though (unless I missed it which very well could be the case) so feel free to chime in if you know something haha.

After reading my original post I left out a step. Make your own APN setting and add to "APN type" ",admin,dun". And reboot then follow original post.

Hello, I tried this and it didnt work so I deleted the new APN I created but ever since my otherwise amazing data speed and connection has been inconsistent and spotty. Even looses signal sometimes which has never happened. Speeds are also not as good as they were.
I set the " TMUS hastetheringoption" option as advised.
My question is what is the default setting so I can go back to it as I believe it has something to do with what I am experiencing.
Thanks!

I believe its TMUS dataplanrequired. I don't understand why your signal is spotty and loss of signal. The more I mess with these settings I'm realizing that all this has done is create another option in the settings storage file where the other method of changing the tether fun required 1 to a 0 is. The other file I know have ,mind you im not sure how I got it, but I believe from testing one or several of the upsell URL options. That now has that tether dun required set at 0, not by me, and sticks through reboot. Here's a screenshot of said settings option that used to not be there. Let me know if this is just me or if others have noticed this now showing up.
Well actually I lost the pics when I flashed back to stock after a weekend long brick. But I managed to some how have screen shots saved to Dropbox of some build.props that I didn't notice before. The other settings option was seen thru sqlite editor when used to change that 1 to a 0 when I clicked on "settings storage" there used to be only one choice then a few days before I bricked and flashed back to stock I noticed another one called settings BCPM I think or something like that. It had all the same build.props in it except the tether fun required was defaulted to 0 already. Which kept me from having to set it or from going to the upsell URL again. The "BCPM" may not be the correct letters but it was something like that. Sorry for the delayed response also I've been bricked all weekend and trying to get it back lol

Followed the instructions and it still doesn't work for me. How do you get the tether dun required to stay at 0 through reboot. I still have to edit the value every time I reboot. My build.prop looks just like yours.
Is anyone familiar with this either through flashing a zip or editing build.prop? I have tried a few ro.product.name changes (noblelteatt, trlteatt, etc) with no luck. I like AT&T data icon more than T-Mobiles. Just a preference.

That's an actualicon resource embedded in the ROM somewhere. Realistically, the only way you'd get AT&T's 4G LTE icon is to use the AT&T ROM that comes with the SM-N920A, which can't be done to the best of my knowledge.
