[Q] Wi-fi tethering hack on the vivid - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I had a skyrocket and was able to use titanium backup to freeze the tethering manager to open the tethering.
Does anyone know how this can be accomplished on the htc vivid. I have a rooted vivid running cwm v2 and android 2.3.4

I had someone try to freeze TetheringGuard to see if it would work, but it didn't (WC's ICS build). I don't think this will be a valid process for the Vivid - I'm sure the devs have this in the back of their heads though. Patience, young padiwan. Have you tried Barnacle wifi tether or android wifi tether? I couldn't get either to work on wc's ICS build, but I don't know what ROM or android flavor you're running, so you might get different results

+1 I tried to freeze tetheringguard but didn't work. However, I believe you can change the APN settings To enable Wi-Fi tethering. The only catch is that it disables LTE

I can't post any links yet. But if you do a Google search for Motorola Atrix free Wi-Fi tethering you should find some information on how to change the APN settings. Let me know if it works.

I tried that process on the vivid with titanium backup and it doesent work. Hopefully something else would work.

Edited to avoid debate. I am posting this with working wifi tether on wild child's latest. Here's how -
Install android_wifi_tether b11 (http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...ail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q=)
Go into settings and set your "Device Profile" to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM).
Tick the box for "Routing Fix"
Start Tethering
Connect from computer
Boom - tethered
Note: You may or may not need to use access control to allow your computer.
Note 2: It's very possible that you'll run into IP conflicts with the general setup. You might have to go to Change LAN and pick a new subnet.
Note 3: Problably not a bad idea to setup encryption
Note 4: I was initially getting DNS errors - don't know if it was Routing Fix that corrected it, or using OpenDNS DNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) was what fixed it. So, if after doing everything else, if it's still not working hardcode OpenDNS servers for DNS Servers on your wireless connection[/quote]

didn't work for me. After tapping "start tethering" it takes a while, about 30 seconds, and finally says "tethering started with errors, check log for details." when i try to check the log, it says "no log file down". I can't see anything from my ipad.

This happened for me before I switched profiles and enabled routing fix, but now works like a charm. What Rom are you using?

^ This method works for me
However, before trying wifi_tether, I deleted the tetheringguard service via titanium backup to see if that would let the hotspot work. It didn't, and it seemed to lockup the built in settings. Is there a way to get this service back? Everything else seems to function fine so it's not a big deal if I cant.
Thanks!

wifi tethering problems

ok im having some troubles with wifi tethering. i have tried barnacle and i cant even get my laptops to detect the network im broadcasting with my phone. when i use wireless tether for root i can get a connection but its not a good connection at all. i cant even get google to load. im using damage control 2.09.01 on a sprint hero... thanks in advance for any help... also i need this working hopefully before Saturday as i go on vacation and my hero was going to be the internet for my laptop
Probably belongs in the Q&A section, no?
Yes, should go in q&a, but, barnacle is a no go for heros, and make sure you use wireless tether 1.6 (do not get from market, get from google code website)

I haven't tried 2.02, although I believe it was made for evo specifically, but may work fine. Before, though, only 1.6 worked for heros

What ROM are you using. I think it only locks on the .29 kernel, more so for the DC based ROMs.

I'm having problems with my wifi-tethering can anyone help me? I went ahead and installed wifi tether 2.0.2 on top of the stock 1.6 that came and since this thing has gone crap. I have found 1.06 but even after installing it, it won't work. Any suggestions? Rom I have is PureHero 2.1 Maps/Overclocked.

Using purehero 2.1 I always get unable to start tether with every version of wifi tether except 1.6. However with 1.6 it overheats the phone, even when underclocking, and when I try to shut it off it freezes the phone and reboots. If I try to end tether in autokiller the icon goes away but the phone is still tethering. Ended up tethering all night one night and my son was on watching anime on his ipod touch. When I got up in the morning and grabbed my phone I thought it was on fire.
So which ROMs does 2.0.2 or 2.0.5 work on? I really need to fix the overheating issue as I live in Arizona and at this time of the year it is difficult to keep things from over heating on their own lol.
Thanks

Any Rom that isn't OC'd for sure. and I think any Rom that isn't the DC .29 kernel. Havent been able to actually confirm that though just my theory.
Edit: actually my statement was for 1.6. 2. 0. 2 is still in experimental stage for the hero

The option to uninstall wasn't there for pure hero 2.0.9 or whatever I have. Anyway, I just deleted the APK, then installed 2.0.2 and it still didn't work. However I was then able to properly uninstall 2.0.2 so when I installed 2.0.5 it worked. Works good now, only thing I have noticed is that I changed the SSID but it doesn't actually change.
Thanx for the help but I just went back to rom that's not oc

[ROM] Inc-Classic Evo4G Port v1.3 1/4/12

Here's the Evo 4G Classic ROM that I ported thanks to the dev's here on XDA. Still needs some work, but its overall functional. Big thanks totommytomatoe for the ROM. Also thanks to WildStang83's porting guilde, wdfowty, ,NilsP, newtoroot, gatormark, and JoelZ9614 to make this port possible.
Need to disable some roaming stuff in wireless networks and set your rosie preferences in settings under Classic Tweeks.
The "roaming stuff," lol, is in Wireless & Networks, Mobile networks, and uncheck "Call guard". The roaming should be set to Sprint roaming, not automatic. Automatic will drain your battery.
Big thanks to jermaine151's kernel.
Here's the features:
* Rosie semi-Ghost Edition - with on-the-fly Tweaks Remapping for Left and Right Buttons
* Apks Unique and Optimized
* Smali Debugging Removed
* Statusbar Tweaks, by Romanbb
* CRT On/Off - able to toggle on/off
* Quick Settings
* CIQ Removed
* Trackpad Wake n Unlock
* Screen Capture (Power+Home)
* Build.prop tweeks for optimization

emmc was the only reason i kinda pushed the rom away. wifi was kicking my butt for a while. wildstang was the one that pointed me toward the build.prop for a fix. the team nocturnal rom i have posted has the working wifi if you want to use it to compare, go right ahead.
Hmm, are you using the framework-res.apk file from the Incredible or the Evo? Because I know there is an "apns.xml" file in framework that could be causing the problem if the apns are incorrect.

Thanks Gatormark, seems your boot.img is what did the trick for wifi to lock in very fast! What boot.img you use? Even Youtube works only now under wifi, but under 3g, youtube gives error of can't connect to server. Whats odd is that everything else works under 3G except Youtube now! Any idea's?
BTW, I did put all I could from your build.prop. For your EMMC fix look at my build.prop. I had the opposite where camera would not save to SD card, but added stuff in build.prop for fix.

look at the base of the rom, you should be able to find an evo flashable 4x app drawer, like micro said, apps is now system.app so you might have to use rootexplorer to make the change (unless you want to edit updater for flashable)

sometimes the leak kernel from a while ago (the one that's in inc supra rom) fixes some broken things, such as wifi. might be worth pulling boot.img from that and putting it into your zip. (just a thought, it's worked for me)

Thanks to both of you. I just figured zipthemer would do the update.zip properly since I had to use an update script from my phone. I guess I was wrong. I just pushed with adb, and all is good now. Edit: I noticed a little bug, not sure if it's ROM related or because it's Sprint base. I don't have google maps navigation. I have maps but not the navigation icon. Anyone else have this? Also GPS isn't working. I used GPS toolbox and it says not enabled in settings, which it is.

[Q] Mobile data & Wifi turning on automatically

Hi All.
I have the Aussie Velocity that has ICS via ota update.
Just recently data and wifi are turning on in the mornings automatically.
This has only started to occur to occur after downloading Angry Birds Space....(okay, that was a lame d/l, but the game is addictive) I have since uninstalled the game, but the issue still exits.
Is there anyway of telling what app or system call is turning these on?
Or is there something that I am overlooking?
Best Regards
Paul
So your unchecking them in the settings menu or via your status bar and they are just turning on by themselves?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
Mine has been doing the same since the ICS update. You can turn WiFi off and after a while it turns itself back on. Same happens in reverse as well.

Contacted HTC today, they wanted me to remove the battery and wait one minute...lol
After I told them that I had already done that and a full factory reset had been done, he suggested I take it to back to the retailer and have it examined. WTF!
I even asked if it was possible to remove the update and go back to original firmware........I can not help with that maybe the retailer will know....double WTF...lol

After I told them that I had already done that and a full factory reset had been done, he suggested I take it to back to the retailer and have it examined. WTF!
I even asked if it was possible to remove the update and go back to original firmware........I can not help with that maybe the retailer will know....double WTF...lol

Tech support guys always know diddly squat about anything.
But of course, you knew that, and that's why you're here. I can say that it seems to happen intermittently with my WiFi, but never on Mobile Network. I'm on Leigh Kennedy's deodexed Telstra stock.
Mine just started doing this today. I work for lowes and most of the time the wifi here sucks so I kept it off today. But my pandora would randomly stop fetching data and I'd look and see that wifi logo in the status bar. Weird issue no doubt.

Okay so after looking at catlog, what I *think* is happening is that the phone is automatically trying to start tethering and this enables WiFi. I could be wrong but that's what catlog shows when I turn the screen on after an extended sleep over the course of a couple hours. I emailed myself the log..will post screens later.
Edit: Posting screencap..can somebody more educated with these logs chime in here? This problem is incredibly annoying.
Edit 2: I connected a Bluetooth headset just a few minutes ago and the WiFi turned on with it. In the logs, you can see Bluetooth tethering turn on which caused the WiFi to turn on. Seems there could be some serious tethering bugs here..

I have been noticing mobile network starting, but not wifi.
I didn't notice before ICS OTA update.
I called AT&T/htc. They want mt to use the ROM from htc's site. It's naturally M$ only. They say they will replace the phone, I wonder if I should tell them it still connects randomly without reloading thr ROM?
If I Use this with bootloader unlocked, CWM installed, will I get boot loop?
Thanks in advance

Yes, it's the official RUU.
It's boot loader locked for rom updates, and off for everything else, right?
I have read this before, but I am completely new to android. I have had the ph39100 for three weeks. A lot of what I have read has not completely jelled, I guess.
Thanks!
My mobile network was starting on its own as well. Until I removed qic.
AT&T will go to any lengths to hide the fact that their spy software does this. Including replacing your phone when you complain.
Has any one figured this out I'm also having this issue on stock ics. Att

[MOD/HACK][LTE][N4] Permanent LTE Network

Hey everyones,
I've searched a lot and never found on XDA what I searched so I decided to start this thread. It's from another author, from another website, so I don't take any credit on this but I think it will be useful for you as it was for me.
I'm not responsible for any bricked device/broken or whatever. Be sure to make a NANDROID backup before running theses changes.
Before we get started, there are a few prerequisites for the following hack to work. You need (1) a Nexus 4 that has been rooted (2) you’re with Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Kodoo, Virgin, MTS, Sasktel, Telcel (and for some lucky users T-Mobile) –for greater certainty, this guide will definitely NOT work with Wind Mobile, Mobilicity or Public Mobile in Canada or AT&T, Verizon, etc.), (3) you have an LTE sim card–you cannot use a regular sim card and (4) your data plan supports LTE (most data plans are LTE enabled, but some really old ones do not, ask your carrier if you are unsure).
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
You will also need to be ROOTED and have the .33 baseband or older(if you don't go flash it:
Nexus 4 Basebands collection)
It should look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Here are few line of code you'll need to have when we will begin. Be sure to note these, without any error in it:
Code:
telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1
ro.telephony.default_network=9
ro.ril.def.preferred.network=9
OK! Now we are good to go.
1. Download a root browser (I personnally like Root Browser. It simple and fast enough.)
2. We need to edit a file named build.prop. For this, you need to go
Code:
/system/
3. Long click on it, it will popup a menu. Select "Open As" and select a text editor.
4. Find the line:
Code:
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0
5. Replace (I mean, erase it) it with the three lines we wrote down before.
6. Save the file.
We are at 50% of the job now.
7. In the next few steps, we’re going to add your carrier’s LTE APNs directly into Android (if you’re with Rogers or Fido) because the build.prop trick only works if you don’t change the APN in Android. Therefore, if you’re with Bell, Telus, Virgin or Kodoo or Telcel (Mexico), you can likely safely skip this step as the APNs in the XML file are likely already correct (but you can check to make sure). If you’re with Fido or Rogers, you will have to modify the XML file as we do below. If you don’t know what your carrier’s APN settings are, you can visit this page to find your carrier and take note of the LTE APN settings. In our example below, we’ll be changing the APN under “Fido Default”.
8. Now we need to go to this location:
Code:
/system/etc/
9. Find a file named apns-conf.xml
10. Make a backup of it (Copy it to your sdcard for exemple).
11. This backup is really nice, because with this, we are going to change the APNs you need.
12. Plug your phone to your PC and open the XML file with notepad++ or any text editor of your choice.
(It should look like this)
13. Find your carrier and change the APN to the LTE APN you found before.
14. Save the file
15. Now move the file to /system/etc/
16. Last step, you must FACTORY RESET your phone by the phone itself or the hack will not work.
After that, you should see a 4G icon, meaning that everythings worked fine!
Gratz!
If not, restore your NANDROID backup.
Good luck!
There are few things you should know after this mod/hack. (FAQ)
1. Don't ever go to *#*#4636#*#* or it will just cancel all your hard work.
2. If you flash a new ROM, you'll need to redo all the steps.
3. Flashing a kernel doesn't ***k this hack.
4. LTE drains the battery pretty rapidely, don't whine you got a bad battery life.
5. It work with every roms, you only need to be rooted.
6. T-Mobile users need to do the APNs changes.
7. If your LTE Calls drops, go see here.
I'll keep updating the post. Don't worry, if something change, you'll know it.
You can post your Speedtest screenshots here too!

Thanks, But I did not found telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0. Will try when I have a diff rom
I setup LTE on my Nexus 4 with the stock rom without modifying the buildprop before and that caused 100% of the phone calls coming in to crash the dialer. Does this method have that problem too? I'm with koodo by the way.

I don't know if it's just a T-Mobile thing but I thought ROMs such as ParanoidAndroid didn't work properly with older radios.

Stock or AOSP based roms need the changes that simobile details in this thread. Mind you that this isnt needed for CM10.1 or AOKP. As far as I know T-mobile is the only carrier that had this incall issue, so if your on t-mobile with .33 or older you need this.

Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names
...(menu)>New APN
Code:
Name- LTE
APN- fast.t-mobile.com
MMSC- http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN type- default,supl,mms
APN protocol- IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol- IPv4/IPv6
The easiest way after crack flashing is to remember fast.t-mobile.com and protocols and just copy/paste MMSC and APN type from the default tmo apn

Name is "T-MOBILE US LTE"
APN is "fast.t-mobile.com
Everything else keep the same except APN protocol . change that to IPv4/IPv6
Save and you should be good.
Keep in mind I didn't do this hack to get my T-Mobile 4g lte to work. All I do is dial the number and change the network type to "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (prl) which is what allows me to make calls without any drops . hope this helps

Web Browsing on unrooted Gear

Hey, haven't seen this mentioned yet, but ScreenShare works for our phones and gear so we can have a full Web browser on our watches.
Here is what I did.
Installed ScreenShare on my Note 3.(No need for pro)
Used Wondershare MobileGo to install the -tablet- version of ScreenShare on the Gear.
Launch them both and change the connection type to Bluetooth.
If you are already paired between you phone and watch then they will appear under Paired devices and you just need to select the phone from the Gear.
If you are not paired, say you don't have a Note 3, there is a Setup Wizard option built in which will find your devices and set it all up for you.
After all the connections are done, just run the browser and it will open on both your phone and Gear, but from here on you don't even need the phone screen on and it won't sync screens until you press a designated button to do so.
Sometimes, it will mess up using the browser button saying you have no service, to get around this (every time in my testing) use the Help button, then go to the FAQs. The browser will open to the apps website FAQs and from there you can go to any site you want like normal.
The app also sync all your documents, music, videos, and pictures for use on the Gear as well. Fun stuff.
Hope this helps everyone who has been looking for a way to surf the Web via Gear.

the address bar should automatically hide, and the navigation buttons should be toggled by a gesture.

Awesome, glad it worked for you too! I am planning to let the app creators know that this works for the Gear as well in hope that they might add gestures and the hide address bar as you said.
If not, maybe someone more skilled then myself can make something similar based off this.

Cool. What is this doing to your battery life. Was planning something but figured that it might drain the battery as hell.
Haven't noticed anything that drastically different. Other than the fact I am using more screen on time.
The Bluetooth connection is all shared so it's just the same as having it paired in the first place.
I got a full day use out of it, with
ATN, Tablet Talk, and ScreenShare all on.
Did quite a bit of Web Browsing trying stuff out. I also had several calls and maybe... 100ish texts if I had to guess.
I'll try tomorrow just having it on but not actually browsing to see if I notice a change.

You will need to sideload it through ADB or Wondershare. There is some guides on the forums but I will try to summarize.
Download wondershare on PC.
Install and connect to the Gear via USB. Then using Wondershares browser, search for and install ScreenShare tablet. It will download and install right to the Gear and then you are done.
You also will need a keyboard app. I use Hackers Keyboard, but I've heard people who had success with Google Keyboard.
Search and install either the same way as above then restart the Gear. This is important, the keyboard will not work until you fully restart the Gear.
Good luck! I will try to respond better soon as I get home.

Little unfortunate thing I just noticed, we can only have three Bluetooth connections including the Gear Manager itself. (So two third party) these include stuff like Ebay, Evernote, ATN, Tablet Talk, and ScreenShare.
So if these do not work for you, try turning one of those off. Hope a firmware update might increase this limit.
Battery life has hasn't been any worse than a normal days use for me today. I do not think it effects battery any more than Screen on and Bluetooth on does in the first place.

For anyone who doesn't want to or can't use wondeshare you can just download .apk extractor from the play store and extract it from the tablet version downloaded to your phone. You're welcome! Glad this has been working well for you and everyone else. For your YouTube question, I am thinking we may be able to install an old Flash player apk to the Gear. It will depend on if the ScreenShare browser supports Flash like Dolphin or Stock browser.
Going to try that today, curious now.
