[Q] Signal issues after loading C-RoM Mix v16 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I've been digging around the forum for a while now and I can't seem to find a fix.
I loaded up C-RoM Mix v16 on my i897 just fine. And everything is working well except the signal is poor to barely there now. Everything I read points to changing the modem to a different version.
The current Baseband version = I9000XXJVT
Since this is a i897 I would assume it should be something for the i897 not I9000
However if I try to load a modem from soggycashew.weebly.com/i897-modems.html in CWM it crashes. I'm assuming they aren't modems that work with ICS?
Help? Suggestions on what\how to replace the modem so I can get better signal again?

You'll have to flash I9000 modems, they're compatible with the I897.

Need for Kernels and Modems?

If I have read correctly Flashing a new ROM doesn't make changes to Kernel or the Modem. First is this correct? Second if this correct is there a need to Flash different Kernel or Modem? Third if you do need to flash a separate Kernel or Modem is this done though ROM Manager after you have new ROM going?
Thanks
Almost all roms if not everyone available for the captivate will change your modem and kernel. Most of the roms available are based off of i900 froyo, so you need a compatible modem and kernel.
You can change your modern and or kernel using clockwork recovery which rom manager installs. So if you were on a rom that used kernel a, but you wanted kernel b you can change just the kernel and keep the rom

I was aware that kernels are flashed as part of the ROM, but modems are too? Does that mean I don't need to worry about compatibility, I can just flash ROMs and be good to go?
With HTC devices the modem (we call it radio) is stored on a different partition from the ROM so kernel, spl/bootloader and radio have to match when installing a new ROM.

Yeah, modems are included with the roms. I am guessing that true captivate roms (Cognition) would not have to include a modem if they chose not to (as long as everybody does the suggested 'flash back to stock'), but the i9000 based roms pretty much have to include a modem.

Nope, cognition would take care of it. I'm not sure what modem Cognition is using, but I am 100% sure it includes one. There are to many different opinions about modems for a developer not to favor one over another and include it in their rom.
Even if Cognition for some reason did not include a modem, your JH7 modem would be fine with the cognition rom/kernel.

Which CM7 Rom should i flash?

Hi all
I'm interested in trying out cyonagenmod, but i have no idea which rom to flash.
I thought i would just try the latest nightly build, found here -
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=galaxysmtd
but then found this -
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/24052-cyanogenmod-7-for-the-samsung-galaxy-s-v710-rc1-26-june-2011/
Which looks almost more official, like it might be more stable, but i have no idea. there is no description on how it differs to a nightly rom.
Which one should i try? Hope you can help.
You should flash the latest nightly, but remember the Nightly #82, need a Gingerbread Bootloader to the best work

Not just any ROM, it must include the bootloader. that means the PDA-file (.tar or .tar.md5) must contain boot.bin and Sbl.bin
check the ones marked with Sbl here
I prefer this thread with bootloaders flashable to odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16374373&postcount=70
You putting your bootloader in PDA, dont tick re-partition
I want to try CM7 too but don't know whether Traditional Chinese can be displayed and edit successfully?
cm is a very nice an diff rom....i was very happy wen i flashd it,so many choices an tweaks..very smooth an fine tuned..but also download the google addon package...the site has faq so u can search ur doubt an well..cheeerz
Thanks everyone! really appreciate it!

cm7 runs the yaffs filesystem...no need for lag fix, and the 720 video is a known problem, try the miui camera app, it improves it but still isnt perfect, find it over at the cm7 nightly thread

I installed http://dl.darkirc.info/public/talon/TalonDEV-0.4.3-I9000-CWM3.zip successfully - is that the same thing? bootloader = kernel?
The 3 button mode does not still get me in to CWM. Could anybody please help on how to get to CWM? Thanks.
what? Bootloader isnt kernel oO, and that kernel is for Samsung custom rom's no for CM7 oO

So, I'm new to Galaxy S. Need Help :)

Hi guys,
I own a Galaxy S i9000 mobile.
It's running on :
Android 2.3.3
Baseband : DXJV9
I have not rooted it or did anything till now.
I wanna flash ICS AOKP on my mobile..
I have tried using the search option but still im soo deserted.
Can you guys guide me on how to root, flash CWM recovery, and flash ICS please ?
and Does Galaxy S supports ROM Manager ? coz i've been using Galaxy Ace before and it didn't support it..
Thanks a lot
For Root read this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
You need to download file ending in JVP. Usually you want the one ending with last 3 digits of your baseband but as there is no JV9 JVP is close enough and is reported as working. Besides it does not really matter as you just need this for root.
Once you have root you can simply follow the guide in the AOKP thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524108
I know you have stated you want AOKP but if you want a bullet proof simple way to get this all done start with this thread for Team ICSSGS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493
I usually like to make sure I have all necessary files, roms & programmes before starting so if anything goes wrong I can get my phone working again. This tutorial will help you with that also.
After following all of this you should have a good understanding of what to do and then you can flash AOKP as their instructions are kind of limited.
Also when choosing an ICS Rom this is a great thread with regards to performance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554621
AOKP is a wonderful choice.
But if I can give you an advice, wait for the next Milestone which is expected to be released over the next few days

That link for flashing Team ICSSGS has help for everything else. From downloading stock rom to flashing with Odin to flashing ics (in this case team icssgs)

Great
and finally, Which version of the kernel should i use for official AOKP b34? 1.1.0 or 1.1.0s?
Not sure but both should work. 1.0.1s is for slim ics and other roms. If it is not compatible it will break 720 video recording & playback otherwise eveything else should work. There is also a video patch somewhere.

Alright..I've flashed AOKP b34 and Semaphore 1.1.0s
Everything seems to be fine
But now my sdcard is mounted as internal storage and the actual internal storage is mounted as sdcard..is this a bug or what ?
Even when I connect my phone to my PC using USB,only the actual internal storage (which is mounted as SDcard shows up..
I personally haven't 1.1.0 only 1.0.1sbm with slim ics. I think the 1.1.0 is still a test version for cm9 but could be wrong. Things may have updated since i last looked but i recommend reading the semaphore thread and posting there for more help.

Known bug in Semaphore. Make sure you enable the 'Netfilter' module in the app. When it randomly doesn't work, which is the bug, simply check and uncheck it 2 times and it will work.

Can't compare it with Slim ICS as I haven't used that but it's one of the best for sure , using it for just about 24 hours but it's working great.
ICS 4.0.4 was one of the best I have used and I can say that this one beats that hands down.

I wasn't able to find working link also. There is workaround, but is pain in the b....Process would be to return to stock 2.36 xxjw4 via Odin, root your device again, make backup of efs folder(imei number is there, phone won't work without it),flash stable CM10.1 to change partition layout, then what ever you want. Most of the roms don't change modem, modem stays after flahing roms....I would rather wait for working link or search for them deeper, but that's me

Flashing ICS and above changes the modem to JVT, so even if you do flash JW4 stock that's changed as soon as you flash CM9/CM10.1
However WD40 very kindly uploaded a version of JW4 in the modems thread:
