[Q] Anyone having screen flickering? - Sprint HTC One (M7)

I love the phone but I've noticed that while navigating the phone the brightness flickers or pulsates somewhat. It's also noticeable when watching video. Also I've noticed when I swipe from blinkfeed to my main home screen I can tell the screen gets slightly dimmer.
It doesn't seem as pronounced when I disable auto-brightness but it still seems to happen.
Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

I also have but I can't consistently recreate the issue so I havent tried to get a replacement yet

After messing around with the phone more it seems to me like the brightness adjusts depending on what is on the screen, like if I launch an app the brightness might change but once it does it seems consistent until I do something else. I don't know if it's trying to adjust dynamically based on what's being displayed or what.
Not really sure if it bothers me enough to do anything about it.

I had like a wave go through my screen while using the cam odd anyone notice the lines in the screen when its off ?

I haven't noticed that.
I actually went to Best Buy over the weekend and exchanged my phone to see if a different one would be better about the brightness adjusting constantly. My new phone seems about the same but I think I'm kind of getting used to it, also I just don't feel bad knowing that it seems to be widespread.

[Q] Screen Resolution Issue

After about 3 weeks in use I started getting this problem with my screen, it almost seems as if the resolution has lowered and now the picture itself isn't covering the entire screen, you can see black edges around the corners. Full system restore seems to fix it sometimes but it only lasts for minutes to hours before it switches back again. Anyone experience something similar?

Humm now that seems odd...
I never had such a problem...

Nexus 7 touchscreen dead spots

So i've noticed a very strange issue with my Nexus 7. If I wake the tablet up while touching the screen I get some very strange touchscreen behavior. It's almost as if there are dead areas on the touchscreen that don't respond to touch. If I put it back to sleep and wake it up without touching the screen the issue is gone. I've made a youtube video demonstrating the issue but I can't post the link yet since I haven't had 10 posts yet. If someone PMs me I will message them the link so that they can post it to this thread.
Has anybody else experienced this issue?
I'm having the same issue. I noticed it while typing.

Any specific areas that are less responsive? I wonder if there's a touchscreen calibration app for the Nexus. I know there are for other devices.

+1 Definitely noticing this. It appears to occur randomly and inconsistently in different regions. The same region will not go dead again, necessarily. It seems as though the screen simply does not register those touches.

It seems to be towards the center most of the time and the dead zone appears to vary in size. It's possible the dead spot may center around whatever part of the screen was touched when waking the device. I'll have to do some more testing to see if that is the case.

Just got mine and it was sitting outside in the heat and the touchscreen was not responding well when I first turned it. After it cooled off and installed the update every thing is working fine.
Here is a video from the OP. He asked me to post it for him.
Is it possible that the capacitance of the screen is calibrated upon wake or something? Not even sure if possible, but it's a thought.
Edit: a drawing app may allow you to demonstrate a little easier.
I don't know if my issue is related but scrolling is totally inconsistent on my n7. Usually when I swipe it'll work correctly but one out of five times a swipe will be registered as a tap. This gets really annoying when you're trying to scroll but end up clicking something instead. Wonder if my n7 is defective.

I don't have my N7 yet so I can't test it out for you but that's definitely weird. Can someone with an N7 try to duplicate the issue?

I've also seen this happen on occasion when I trigger the issue. Swipes will sometimes register as clicks...
A good way to confirm the dead spot is to download a drawing program and see if there are breaks when you try to draw a straight line. Even though I can replicate the dead spot when scrolling, everything seems fine in the drawing program.

This is an Android problem as far as I am concerned. All of my android devices have typed funky while charging.

I tried this out in two drawing apps and got different results. In "Draw Free" when drawing vertical lines my line would stop at the beginning of the "dead" spot and pick up again on the other side of the "dead" spot. I could not replicate the issue when drawing vertical lines in the "Picasso" drawing app.
Not seeing this issue on my Nexus 7. Not very helpful in tracking the problem, but I figured it was worth mentioning that this doesn't seem to be global. I'll post again if I manage to replicate the issue.
I enabled show touches in developer options when it started happening, and I saw ghost touches nearing the middle left side of the screen when nearing areas with dead spots.
Seems like a grounding issue internally causing the touch driver to short in some places.

If it is due to a internal grounding issue I don't think it will be as simple as a software fix
I am on the fence on whether I should try and get mine swapped out with a new one at GameStop...At a minimum I am going to try and call google support at some point today and get their take on the situation.
I would definitely swap it out.
Hello to all. I don't have an Nexus 7 but i do have Nexus S and i noticed from some time when i take out the phone from my pocket if i touch the screen and then turn it on the display was not responsive on touch but did not make some tests to see if the touch before turning on the screen was the exact problem. Now i saw this thread and tried the "pointer location" in Developer options and got this:
Turning off the screen.
Put my finger on a chosen spot.
Turn on the screen.
Unlock.
Try to draw a line passing through the exact same place where my finger was when i turned on the screen.
The line get to the point and then make a half circle around the spot or it break the line and then continue after the point where my finger was.
After turning off and on the display again the non responding spot disapear.
Sorry for my bad english
I too am having this problem.
I bought one at Sam's because i was sick of waiting on the play store....now I'm trying to decide if i should take delivery in the hopes that the touchscreen bug is only on some...

[Q] htc one screen problem

hi i am in the uk.. on three network. i got my htc one on the 3rd of april, and 4 days later the screen started to flicker? not all the time? but browsing? esp facebook or anything page with white? i guess the white shows up the flicker more? like i say NOT all the time but soo annoying!! not what i expected from a high end phone? Now let me just say i love this phone.. but thought i cant have this.. so i fill out support form for htc and they reply quick advising me it should not do this and to get it changed. i contact three go through the whole call centre thing (like pulling teeth) anyways the upshot was.. three sent me another brand new phone the next day (yesterday) and took back my first one. And guess what? as soon as i switch the phone on, same screen flicker? i treated the first phone like a new born baby didnt drop or bash it 4 days=screen flicker. another new phone as soon as i use it = screen flicker!! i so love this phone but im so gutted!! any suggestions from ANYONE would help.

This isn't helpful but you must just be unlucky to have had it happen twice because mine's been perfect and I've not seen anyone else on this forum mention that problem with theirs.
I guess you'll have to get a new one sent out again and hope for the best
Could you make a short video clip to illustrate your problem ?

hi.. to be honest i dont think a video would pick the problem up? you know i could just be being a kill joy? ive watched videos etc and there really isnt a problem with that at all.. in fact the quality of the picture is fab? if i could use an analogy? remember when the volume control on your stereo would get dust in it? and you would have to twiddle the knob to cure it? its a bit like that? like i say it does not do it all the time but i notice it with white in the screen? like facebook google and when i am navigating thru the screens on the phone like settings etc? the white flickers white/slightly darker white? hence my example? now ive changed my text messages colour scheme so that doesnt annoy me now with it.. but obviously as a electronics layman.. i cant help but think if it was a problem with the screen itself, other colours would do the same as they would if there was a loose connestion? and also if it was a power flow problem with the battery? same thing? not just the white on screen? so i can only conclude as a layman again.. that it is some sort of issue with the os? screen refresh rate maybe? i just dont know? and i cant help think stupidly or not that when htc finally get around to an os update to 4.2.2 (or whatever it is) from 4.1.2 the whole thing will be resolved?
Could it be the auto brightness doing its thing? Try turning it off maybe that might solve it.
I might be totally wrong, be great if that fixed it though. Good luck
well well well!!!! And there you have it!! or at least something like that? ive always used the multi widgit for wifi bluetooth brightness etc? so i have brightness preset on that. instead ive gone into display settings, adjusted brightness with slider? no more flicker!! Was this happening when the stock power widget brightness was set to medium?
If so, I have the same flickering ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2243483 ), but I've found out that its not the power widgets fault per se, but the the the level that it sets it to. The widget set the brightness to 33%, and that the level which I'm getting flickering at, regardless of if it was set with the power widget or by the slider. The flickering happens on screen with a good amount of white. Google search result webpage is a good test case; it shows the flickering clearly at 33%. It also seems to depend on where the white is on the screen. For example, I can induce flickering at 40% brightness by moving a light colored icon from the bottom of the screen to the top! Moving it back to the bottom causes the flickering to go away. I can also do it by moving around or resizing the Gmail widget. Flickering happens for me to some extent at brightness values between 33 and 45 under certain screen conditions. Above or below these brightness values, the screen is top notch, no endless flickering at all regardless of how much white is on screen. I'm starting to think this has to do with the dynamic contrast feature of the One. It seems as though it falls in an endless loop of trying to change the contrast, as if it cant decide on what to set the contrast to. Or it could be that the dynamic contrast is fighting for a certain brightness value, but the manually set brightness is not allowing it. I might be wrong about this, and it could just be a hardware backlight problem, regardless, I wish HTC had the Sense (ha ha!) to allow us to disable dynamic contrast if we wanted to. I'm pretty sure this is whats causing the issue where people see flickering when the keyboard pops up.
screen issue?
hi..
i had the widget set on the third setting, the fourth being the brightest. i had the same problem with my first phone and thought at the time it may have been a backlight problem? or power flow problem? i sent that phone back and the next phone did the same? after posting on here.. i removed the widget and manually adjusted the brightness. i like the screen quite bright, manual adjustment cleared the problem for me. i gotta say yep the flicker was more visible on screens with alot of white, google, facebook, texts? and way way annoying! i can only suggest you try the same as i did? perhaps it is just a quirk with the htc? or maybe the os? you never know, when the update to keylime or whatever it is called comes out the flicker may go totally?
JUST had this on facebook? hope it helps?

I too am having the same issue, however i believe that my issues is slightly different from yours. I noticed maybe about 2 days after i purchased the phone that mostly anytime I am using the browser, whether it be Chrome or the stock browser my screen automatically adjusts itself. I went into settings and made sure that the brightness was not set at "Auto" and turned all the way up. I also made sure that reading mode, auto adjust screen tone, and color adjustment were all turned off. I also changed the screen mode to dynamic and I seem to still have this same issue. I read on another forum for T-Mobile users that there are a lot of consumers experiencing this same issue, not sure if carriers are doing swap outs for the phones as this may not be related to a HW issue but rather a SW issue.
That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Except I work outside, so when it does this it's impossible to see my phone. If you get a chance the next time this happens can you go into settings and open the brightness slider to see if you also can get this error message to appear? That seems to be the only place I find the message, it doesn't just pop up or anything. I too have checked like 10 times to make sure all the other display settings are correct, like automatically adjust tone and such. It sucks that auto brightness cannot be fine tune with the slider like it could on the note 2. I'm finding it very strange that instead of adding to features of the Note 2 to make this phone better in every area they chose to remove some great features leaving me wishing I did not upgrade.

It sounds like thermal throttling. LG phones have this, in particular the Optimus G and G Pro. I haven't had the problem on my G2 yet. It's designed to lower the brightness and lower the cpu speed in order to keep the phone from overheating.

True my LG Optimus G pro does this but there is a way to turn it off in the system menu accessible from the dialer. I have turned mine off and the phone no longer does this and has not gotten hot or anything. Wish there was a way to do this on the samsung as my S4 exhibits this same behavior.
I'm thinking about getting a Note 3 today so I'm hoping can be shut off too. I shut it off on my G Pro and the G2 doesn't do it, which I'm very thankful for since I work outside as well.

Since we're on this subject, how often does it happen on the Samsungs? I would figure less often due to amoled not being as bright as LCD.

You may be better served to leave the auto brightness checked when your working outside. When on auto, it gets much brighter when needed than with the brightness slider cranked all the way up.

Note 3 automatic brightness settings problems
I have a Samsung Note 3 phone bought in Germany. I have the some strange problems with brightness settings too. Typically from time to time the phone screen just get too dark. Particular in economic mode the phone can get from time to time very dark and even setting auto brightness to +5 does not help.
I was using before both Iphone 5 and the first Samsung Note and some other phones and automatic brightness control was always working fine. In my new Note 3 the brightness is jumping sometimes suddenly.
JVogle: You can adjust the automatic brightness by pulling slider up or down. It can by set from -5 to +5. But in my case this thing do not help so much. Particularly this is a bigger problem again in economic mode.
This is rather a software issue, because when I switch to manual brightness it stays constant all the time.
Anybody knows how to cure it?
This is so annoying. Gotta wonder if it's a bug in one of Samsungs ****ty features causing it to happen so much. Even without brightness all the way up it happens

You have a different phone than me apparently. Also a different issue, as I'm referring ONLY to manual screen brightness setting. I would expect fluctuations with auto brightness. I've never had a device fluctuate when manually set to a desired % though. I also can't believe they removed the ability to adjust slider with auto brightness. Sadly the only thing better about this phone than my Note2 is the specs. The software and user experience has been sub Note2 for me in every aspect. I will most likely be switching back to the Note2.

[Q] Ambient Display Randomly Turns On

What is everyone experiencing? I have a T-Mobile Nexus 6. I am running stock and not rooted. Apologies if this has already been covered, but I searched a couple of different ways and did not see anything.
Not sure what others are experiencing, but my Nexus 6 display will randomly wake into ambient mode even when I just have it sitting still on my desk or couch. There are no alerts that are driving it, so I am just wondering if others are seeing the same thing or if they have done anything with the settings to clear this issue.
I can't imagine that ambient display is a huge drain on the battery or anything, but it's not nothing. Plus it's distracting when it happens.
I've noticed mine coming on due to vibrations. I had it sitting on a minifridge next to my desk. I thought it was random too, but it turns out I was either knocking the side of my desk with my knee, or the fridge was kicking on/off.
Mine does it all the time. No movement to the phone or even around the phone. Hands no where near it. Just decides to wake up. I find the whole ambient display to be pretty annoying altogether honestly. Hoping devs can disable it and find a way to use the LED.
I saw a weird error message from LightFlow (which I installed and enabled to see what it would do). I wonder if this or other apps that are running in the background and potentially causing the screen wakes.
I will try uninstalling LighFlow to see if it improves the situation and report back with any news.
I think you might be right. I have the same problem but I didn't notice it when I first got the phone. I have installed lightflow and now that you mention it, this problem started soon after. So I just uninstalled lightflow and it already seems better.
When I installed that double tap to wake app it messed with ambient display and would turn it on, especially when the battery was low. I removed that app.
Since then I have also turned off ambient display because I found it fairly useless and feel it is using battery for very little benefit. If it flashed faster or kept flashing until I checked it I think I'd use it.
I turned it off because I had it sitting on a table with nobody touching the table and it kept coming on. I couldn't get light flow to get the light working unfortunately, hopefully there is a fix coming.

root phone, install light flow, disable ambient display.
it's already been done.
i use light flow and it works perfectly, sans flashing LED but that seems hardware/kernel blocked.
It seems that LightFlow is what was causing the issue as I haven't noticed the screen waking since uninstalling it yesterday.
