Let's Talk Hand Gestures! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Hi all. I'm normally not a big fan of starting threads, but because I'm sitting at work right now just wanting to play with my new phone, I might as well start a discussion.
So one of the coolest things about this phone for me so far are all the hand gestures. I know some of them are a little gimmicky, but there are also a couple of useful ones.
My favorites so far:
- Wake up your phone to show Time, missed calls or messages and battery by reaching towards your phone when asleep. Hint: If waving your hand towards the center doesn't initially wake it up, try bringing your open hand towards your sensor, then taking it away and then bringing your hand towards the sensor again. This feature will really come in handy in the middle of the night when I want to know what time it is.
- Take a screenshot by moving the side/palm of your hand across the screen. It's so much easier than trying to time the Home and Power buttons simultaneously.
What are your favorite gestures?
I thought we could use this thread for those who may need help figuring out these features as well. :good:

For some reason I cannot get my phone to switch tracks when I wave my hand. Do I have to be using the stock player for this to occur?

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm guessing that yes, it must be the stock player.

most of the hand gestures have been working on the note 2 for months now, so im not in awe of any...although the page scrolling sure seems like it might come in handy from time to time...

The hand thingies is awesome tho I don't use them...but good to have to show off The wake up feature to see the battery, calls and what not is awesome

The side of your hand has to be touching the screen...(mainly the bottom half of the screen)and swipe from left to right or right to left....you have to find the sweet spot and remember where that is

Lay your phone on a flat surface and with a flat hand reach towards the phone and then pull it back. Your blue notification light should quickly go on and then the screen will light up with the information.
I'm at work and can't access YouTube, but I think there's a video on it too. If you're still having trouble, I can try to link a video when I get home.

One of the more useful gestures, IMO, is the moving an app/widget to a different screen. To achieve it, hold an icon with your left thumb, wave your right hand over the sensors from the left to right or vice versa to change the screen.

these actually really come in handy for me when my hands are dirty. i do a lot of work on my cars and im not really a fan of getting grease all over the screen and these save me a lot of hassle. i never even thought i would use them at first.

Good call. I get a lot of use from Air View when working out as well. It's so easy to change songs by just waving my hand over the phone.

Looks like air gestures only work with stock apps. So far not working with Gmail & Chrome

Does it have gestures for rejecting a call like flipping off? Can you have and appropriate gesture assigned to go to a browser bookmark or URL or play a video? Sorry, saw the topic title and I couldn't resist. Lol

Pretty cool app I thought I'd share.
It uses your proximity sensors to do certain shortcuts on your phone without touching the phone!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKMk_K-Am6g
There is a free version and a paid version.
The paid version is only $2.00, however I wouldn't recommend that if you don't think it's worth it.
Note: This is pretty much a novelty kind of thing, not really meant for daily use.

pretty neat app. I tried the lite version.
Holding the phone with my left hand, tilting the phone forward, and using my left thumb to swipe over the proximity sensor made opening the notification pulldown really easy. not a long drag or quick down swipe, just nice little motion over the sensor.
Installed the Lite version - works fine on my Galaxy 580 (Galaxy 3/GT-I5800) running 2.2.

Cool Jelly Bean trick!!!

I was just playing around with my Nexus 7 and I came across a neat and convenient trick to dispose of a app from the app drawer that you may have mistakenly selected and you only get three options uninstall, app info or simply drop the app on the home screen of your Nexus device. Well, there's a fourth option! Simply long press a app from your home screen or app drawer. Then, fling your finger that's holding down the app down up and release! That's it! From the home screen you don't have to take a app all of the way up to the white x remove then red release delete. From the bottom or where ever that app is on your screen you want to remove or replace, just press and hold the app you want to remove, fling your finger in motion down then up release and watch it fly away off of your screen! I think this only works with Jelly Bean, but this my friend is very convenient!

It shows a lockscreen-style circle for that. Kinda unnecessary, but cool. A quick swipe up from the home button works just as well.

There's an easter egg in the settings app. Go into "about tablet". Tap the version number many times. After that, press and hold the Jelly Bean.

That is actually launching Google Now. If you do not have search history turned on for your google account, you will only see a google search.
If you have history, it will show more information cards.

Softkeys/Navigation Bar mod for car install idea

This is an idea I had while trying to get use to my tablet as a head unit. I found it very annoying that I had to switch screens to change the volume or tracks.
I wanted to see if anyone would think it would be a good idea to add a few buttons to the navigation bar like a skip back, forward, play/pause, volume up/down.
I'm trying to figure it out myself but I'm not the greatest programmer so I figured if I shared my idea someone might might be able to figure it out.
This is what I was thinking!

I have almost finished an app which will add next/previous/play and many other things to the soft button bar. Maybe I'll add volume controls too. For the moment the app was planned with the new bar style in mind ( aka not the omni bar seen from 3.0 to 4.1 which was abandoned in 4.2) but I think a little tweak will render it compatible.
I'll keep you updated.

[MOD] Camera during call and shutter sound on/off Enabled
Very easy mod to do just make sure your rooted and have root explorer on your phone.
Go to root explorer scroll down to system click on it scroll to CSC click on it now scroll down to Feature XML. Open it in text editor. Look for <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>True</CscFeature change the text from false to true that will open the option in the camera so that you can turn the sound on and off. Now look for <CscFeature_Camera_EnableCameraDuringCall>True</CscFeature change the text from false to true. Take note to the pic below. Once you do that back out and save than reboot your phone and you're all set.

The camera hacks work. Re-verify the file was in fact edited and turn off and on completely.
Another note, there are settings for autocorrection in the SIP keyboard in the feature xml. But they dont do anything if changed except to enable the option in keyboard settings. Wonder if its disabled in the keyboard app itself.

Recent apps

Anyone else noticed that if you hold two fingers on any screen on the Gear you get a list of recently opened apps?
Much quicker to navigate this way sometimes.
You can also close the apps by swiping each one to the left.

Hmm ... Too bad that we can't clear the open apps.
I think we will see a lot of changes from Samsung with the gear. They rushed it to market, imho, without it being very mature. But then every new device has this issue.
I remember when people were complaining that the amount of available apps for Android paled in comparison to the iSuck devices.
