[Q] SD won't boot

I want to root my Nook 1.1.0 but it looks like it doesn't boot from SD card.
I tried couple SDs (2Gb and 4Gb) and burn them with couple images for Autonooter 3 (and 2 too as act of desperation).
I can see files on the SDs in Windows and in Nook.
I power off Nook completely with SD inside and plug it into the PC usb.
It supposed to run some script... I waited an hour and nothing happen.
Then Nook boots in regular Nook mode.
I assume that it's something with my SDs.
4Gb is class 4 SD. I burned it with different burner programs - result is the same.
Is there some way to determine that Nook boots from SD?
Maybe MBR is erased or something like this?
I formatted card in Windows and never did it in Nook.
So, I hope MBR (is it even used?) is OK but I want to be sure somehow.
Any suggestions?

What software are you using to burn the image onto the sd card?
You should be using winimage running in administrator mode.

Um you say the nook didn't do anything and then booted normally..... that sounds like it did everything right. Autonooter dose not show anything on the screen when you boot from it. you will get a blank screen for a bit and then it will boot to normal..... Have you checked to see if your nook is rooted?

I used winimage. I can see files in Windows and Nook.
Funny thing is that *.img file is so big but real files on SD are small.
I assume it's empty space what is in img file.

I assume it should show some Android stuff. Correct?
What I see is regular Nook screens.

therealguppy has a point. You may be rooted and not know it yet. Go into the apps drawer and look for the super user app. If it's there, you're rooted. Autonooter doesn't change your launcher or anything else so obvious.

hmmmm... that is strange. As unlikely as you may think it would be, you must have goofed up a step. The nook color is, by way of hardware, hard-coded to boot to the Micro SD-card if a bootable partition exists.
It's crazy unlikely that your nook is somehow flawed and cannot boot to a sd-card.
I would first try and download and burn one of the SD-card bootable roms just to make sure that you are able to boot off of it.

hi, im having the same problem as akizub and i think it may be booting from the sd card. ive tried rooting from all the different firmwares, ive tried different images, winimage, win32diskimage, ubuntu dd, ive even tried buying a new micro sd. i cant figure out whats wrong. ive seen all the youtube videos and instructions

Don't think it's an issue with the SD card as I can see the SD files from the Nook after it boots
Wrote the SD using Win32diskimager. This must be working as I can see the files on the SD on both the Nook and the PC. Don't see how a block copy can miss anything!
I'm using auto-nooter 3.0.0
The Nook nook boot looks identical with or without the SD.
Maybe another level of security by BN ?

Just a crazy thought....are you making sure to have the correct versions?
Autonooter 3 NEEDS to be run on stock 1.1.... not 1.0.1 or 1.0.0.

SD card is a 4GB SanDisk which other people seem to have used.
I'm assuming there is a low level loader in the Nook that attempts to load a boot block in a certain device order. Is it possible they changed that?

Yeah I am running into the same problem, I returned my nook for a few defects and now my new one won't boot from the sd card. Its running 1.1.0... one thing I have noticed that is different is that it seems to boot up faster than my old one did...

Its working now, it wasn't partitioning the sd card for boot, was using my phone as card reader, switch to an actual card reader and new sd card and it worked.

Problem was solved.
It was fact that my SD was not bootable.
I tried something simple and reliable like CW recovery. Win32diskimager didn't want to burn disk complaining that it was too small. I tried to burn 1Gb to 2Gb, 4Gb and 16 Gb SDs and it was telling me - not enough disk space.
Then I used winiamge and was fine.
After I saw that CW was booting fine I burned autonooker again and then it started to work.
So, make sure that your SD is bootable by doing some simple and reliable image burning.

[Q] Unable to boot off of bootable CWM SD Card

I formatted and re-imaged my nook today from 1.0.1 Rooted to stock.
I then manually updated to 2.1 for flash capability.
Now I want my Root back.
For some reason the NOOK won't boot off of the SD Card anymore, it just ignores it until it's booted and I can see the files on the SD card.
I've imaged my SD Card with multiple versions of CWM, shut off my nook, inserted the SD card and plugged in a USB cable to initiate the process.
Is it possible that it requires the "Nook" USB cable to start the boot off of SD Card process or will the cable for my Droid Incredible work as well?
It's the only thing i can think of at this point that is causing the problem.
I won't get my nook cable till tomorrow so i can't test it.

You don't need the cable to boot off the sd card, all the cable does is turn the thing on.
You are probably not flashing your card right, it's not simply a matter of copying files over, there is data that needs to be put on the card that isn't part of the files you can see.
If you are using an old nooter or autonooter card, it's probably corrupted or something. You don't want to use those old rooting processes anyhow.
The rooting process is also different now than in previous releases. You should do some reading on how to make a bootable cwm card and what the new rooting process for 1.2 is.

I believe you are right, the sd card isn't being flashed correctly.
I tried following the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
Still got the issue where the nook would completely ignore the sdcard yet read it once it was booted.
So i tried formatting the sdcard with my Droid Incredible, then flashed it using windiskimger using the instructions provided in the link above.
Now when i try to boot off the card i get a blank black screen(never gets to "Read Forever" screen.
I have to remove SD Card, hold power button in(10 sec), release and then hold Power button in again(10 Sec) to get the nook to boot back into 1.2
I'm considering doing the 8 failed boot thing and seeing if it will restore 1.0.0 or something at this point.
Any suggestions?

Well that's progress ;-) at least it's trying to boot from the sd card now even if it's not succeeding.
are you using your droid as a uSD adapter for your computer, or do you have a dedicated uSD reader? that might be your problem. I'd try using a separate card reader.
You can get something like this basically anywhere for under $10. Try target/walmart/kmart/staples or like i said basically anywhere ;-)
I don't use windows for flashing but i've noticed some people saying they have luck with some programs for flashing more than others, try reading around, maybe you'll find an alternative to windiskimager that works better for you.
P.S. Formatting before flashing doesn't do anything at all. The flash should erase anything on the card and replace it exactly with the contents of the image you are flashing, regardless of whether it's freshly formatted or filled with 10 years of irreplaceable photographs

I'm not so sure it's the sdcard reader(which is internal to my Dell Laptop)
I switched from a 8gb sd card to a 2gb sd card(to make sure the SD card wasn't causing a problem) and pulled down a SD version of Nookie Froyo 2gb(to make sure CWM wasn't the issue either) just to see if i could get the thing to boot.
Same thing as occurred again.
It's become apparent that Winimage is either not doing it's job or I've somehow miss-configured the thing to not work correctly.
Winimage seems to only be writing one partition to the sdcard. In addition the Nook won't even attempt to boot off the sd card unless it's been formatted by either the nook or my droid prior to imaging. To me this indicates winimage isn't actually writing a image as much as it is copying files(and only the 1st partition at that).
Next step is to Uninstall Winimage, removing an left over configuration files and re-installing. If that doesn't work I'm going to try switching computers.
If that doesn't work then i'm going to look for a new Imaging program.
If anyone has any insight, it'd be welcome.

Well I can officially state my opinion that WinImage sucks...
I downloaded WinDiskImage and within 5 minutes I had my Nook 2.1 Rooted.

Can't get the Nook Color to recognize boot SD card

Hey fellas,
I followed all the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227 that link up until step 8, where my Nook would not recognize the SD card as a boot disk. My laptop does, however, which means the burning of cwm3.2.0.1 worked fine. The Nook just starts up as it normally would without automatically booting into recovery. The SD card is recognized as a standard SD card in the Nook, and all the files are seen (but can't be opened because they're not recognized...I'm not sure if I missed something or what, but I can't figure it out. It's running stock 1.2 and the SD card is a class 10 Samsung 32G, which works just fine. Any advice?

Sandisk. It's important that it be a Sandisk class 4.

Somehow your card is not burned properly. It could be your card like misry said. But it could also be the steps you took. Pay attention to what eyeballer said in his first post. 'Run as administrator' and use external usb readers instead of built in readers.
The Nook is very finicky about how a card is formatted before it will boot from it. Your PC can read it, but the Nook will not boot from it. If the image from eyeballer is burned properly, it will boot.

Now that he mentions it I think leapinlar has a better handle on this one.

i have a sandisk 32gb class 10-doesnt boot from that
i have a sandisk 16gb class 4-doesnt boot from that
i know my nook can boot from sd because i have been dual booting for a couple days now until i could find the correct tutorial for my nook (no green or blue sticker, 1.4.2, 8gb model)
what do you think i should do?

What are you booting? The trick is to get the card formatted so it will boot in the first place.
Also if your dual boot sd is a cm, boot to that and go to ROM Manager and flash CWM to emmc using the first menu choice. Then you have CWM on internal memory you can use for flashing, backing up, etc.
Edit: I just added a section to my tips thread linked in my signature to help users understand about bootable SDs.

i run Team-B-CM7SD-Alpha_final on my dual boot, but when i put the emmc .zip into my sd and booted i couldnt find it in the rom manager, only shows folders

First you are running on a Nook Tablet, not a Nook Color. You will never get eyeballers CWM card to run on that. That is for Nook Color. Second, that is not how you flash CWM with ROM Manager. You use the first two menu choices. But you will find no CWM for the Nook Tablet listed there. I suggest you start reading the Nook Tablet forums, this is Nook Color.

I think my not being able to boot is an issue with the Nook. On my first Nook that I got around Christmas, the root worked just fine. But the one I was recently asked to root, with the same card (32GB class 10), no success. I'm trying to find a backdoor into recovery so I can circumvent this issue. there has to be a way to manually boot into stock recovery and work from there

You say you got the card to boot to the CWM card on your other nook. Will it still boot it? If you have prepared the card fresh, see if you can boot it with either nook. And you are sure this second nook is a Nook Color, not a Nook Tablet like the other user above? They look very much alike.
Edit: You say root, do you mean you want to root the stock on emmc or do you mean flash CM on emmc?
Edit 2: If you are using winimage to burn, be sure to select "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive" rather than "write disk".

[Q] SD card not reading Nook HD+ Cyanogenmod 10.1

So, a few days ago verygreen uploaded his emmc cyanogenmod install for Nook HD+. I was ecstatic but only got around to installing it today. Install went great up until after flashing the rom.The nook threw an error when trying to unmount the sd card (as per verygreen's instructions) "no problem, I'll just shut down the tablet" I thought. So I do so, remove the SD card, turn the tablet back on, and insert a seperate SD card for storage. The rom loaded up just fine and everything seemed normal. I downloaded and ran a benchmark to see that everything was up to par then went to take a screenshot (to compare to other versions later). A second later I looked at my notifications bar to see a message that the screenshot could not be taken because there is no SD card. After a short investigation I realized that the SD card wasn't showing up in my storage section. It showed up just fine in my computer and I've used the card in this nook before. Just to be sure I plugged the CWM card from earlier, sure enough it didn't show up either. As I'm not a complete novice I figured I should try reflashing before coming here. I did so and the nook seemed to recognize that the card was there! Wait, it now says the card is blank or in an unsupported filesystem. Checking the SD on the computer shows it to be in Fat32, which worked in all previous Roms just fine and clicking the notification to try and format also does nothing. Anyone have any advice?
Additionally I should probably mention that I am using the 05/05 Rom, which I thought was supposed to fix mounting issues

You make it sound like you are trying to insert the SD after you have booted to CM10.1. That won't work. You must boot with the SD already inserted so that it is recognized while CM10.1 starts up.

That didn't work I'm afraid. The message about the blank SD card is gone but it still won't let me save a screenshot. Gives a message about the storage being in use. Also, attempting to move an app to the SD card says there's not enough space... On my freshly formatted 32 gigabyte card that, once again, works and reads just fine on my computer. I will mention there is a header for the SD under my storage tab in settings, and it attempts to calculate the used space of the SD, however it does that whether the card is in or not. For that reason I don't think it means anything. Any other ideas? Because I'm certainly at a loss.

How did you freshly format the card? With Windows? You need to use a program named SDFormatter free on the web.
If you boot with no card in you will see that it does not show a card under storage, does not attempt to calculate, etc. There is something about your card it does not like. The hardware on the HD+ is notoriously faulty when it comes to SDs. Format it with SDFormatter, clean the contacts, make sure it is seated well in the slot and anything else you can do to improve things.

I'm a moron. I failed to notice that the rom that the I downloaded actually was the 05/04 rom, the one with no bluetooth or SD mounting... In my defense verygreen hadn't updated his post (I downloaded from the one he linked in the body of his text, not at the bottom). *Sigh* Still though, I should have been paying more attention and if I had been less lucky I could have bricked my device. Anyways, after flashing the PROPER rom SD mounting works fine (though it was a bit finicky, requiring a reboot before finally working). Anyways thanks for your time, and sorry for giving inaccurate information.

what is the sd format allowed by hd+ in emmc?
I wanted to follow up on this thread by asking a general concluding question-
In order to use the sd cards directly in emmc, will the SD cards have to be in fat32 format only? Or can it be in exfat (or even ntfs)? According to a thread, somebody put a quote from the nook website that it can handle exfat.
The reason is that I wanted my nook to be able to read mkvs. I went through the sdformatter software, and it seems that it only formats in fat32.

I am having same problems.Inastalled Verygreen's CM10.1 on internal storage this morning.SD card is not being recognized by nook.I go to settings and tap "storage" and settings force closes,Tried to mount sd card thru recoveryand error message comes up.I formatted sd card in windows and then SD Formatter in fat32 format,C
leaned sd slot with compressd air,No go.Tried 3 different cards Samsung.sandisk class 10 32 gb,sandisk class 4 16gb ,Samsung class10 8gb same result.E
nen reinstalled CM 10.1 emc 6/8/13.did not help.

I temporarily had the same issue, but mine was caused by me tampering with /system/etc/vold.fstab to test a new swap I was trying to make. I changed a setting there and it would not recognize the SD and settings/storage crashed. So that tells me that your system is definitely not mounting the SD. It could be a faulty SD slot. Are you sure you are completely clicking the SD into the slot? Did the slot work well when running stock?
Edit: How does it act when you boot with no SD inserted? Does settings crash? And what happens if you insert the SD after it is booted to CM10.1? Does settings crash then?

I even tried removing everything from the sd and starting over. This has only been since I upgraded to cyanogenmod 10.1. any suggestions? I really want to move some stuff and am in need of my music files at the gym

You cannot move apps to SD with CM10.1. Apps2SD is not implemented.
And to access your external SD, you need to look in ext_sdcard. But CM10.1 on emmc uses the internal SD by default for everything. You can change that by flashing my swap SD zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. See item 4.

ok thanks. so just to clarify, does the nook hd/hd+ work for my Samsung exhibit 4g?

You cannot move apps to SD with CM10.1. Apps2SD is not implemented.
And to access your external SD, you need to look in ext_sdcard. But CM10.1 on emmc uses the internal SD by default for everything. You can change that by flashing my swap SD zip from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. See item 4.

nook HD/HD+
it isn't showing up when I go to unzip on my phone.
This has proven to mean this isn't compatible with my phone. is there another version you can suggest for me to try?

It is a Nook HD+ rom, and will not work on a non-Nook HD+ device. Try the roms in the Galaxy Exhibit development forum.

I spent roughly 4 to 5 days' worth of working hours sitting here at my laptop, trying more and more frustratingly, to get my Nook HD+ to take the new CM Rom, and then dealt with about a dozen full 1080p HD movies I had already spent about 3 hours each to convert to .mp4 and the right size for my Nook, which now was not showing ANY of the content on my 32g SD card. Well, I tried all the formatting (using the SDformatter program), all the re-booting and putting the content directly on it through the Nook, and putting the files on it through my laptop, and I got nothing.
Finally, after noticing a theme among most of the users who were having problems specifically with SanDisk and/or 32gb sized cards, I took the awesome (and expensive) 64gb class 10 SDXC Samsung card out of my Note 2 phone, and formatted that one using the SDF program, and put it on 'exFAT', and after putting the blank card back in my Nook (powering it off fully first), I had to COPY THE FOLDER FROM THE NOOK'S MAIN STORAGE CALLED "MY FILES" AND PASTE IT INTO THE SD CARD STORAGE. Then, I opened it and made folders inside that one for Movies, Music, eBooks, etc... I then loaded the movies onto it via the Nook itself, making sure to paste the files into the SD folder. I also noticed that I needed to keep the Nook from falling asleep, and set it to the highest setting of time before it would go into sleep mode (30 min) and had to keep swiping the screen to reset that time. I also just loaded one large movie file or a few smaller video files at a time, because if the screen went off, or if I had videos loading onto the Nook for more than a couple minutes, then I would get the frequently reported error saying that it 'could not copy'.
After doing all of this, I was finally able to start a couple of my movies with minor problems. I hate how it says in the video player I was using, that you have to use the right side touchscreen to swipe on an invisible volume control up or down, and it was extremely sensitive but also not easy to control.
So, to review:
-Try using a different card other than SanDisk and 32gb
-DL the free SDformatter program and use that to format ANY card you put in your CM rooted Nook! Try to set it at 'exFAT' also.
-Power OFF the Nook before installing the new SD card.
-Then plug the Nook into your computer, and COPY-PASTE the file folder "My Files" in the Nook's MAIN STORAGE and put it into the SD card. Make folders inside this one to sort your movies, music, books, etc.
-Copy-Paste your files that are NOT eBooks from your computer into the new 'My Files' on the SD card. (I suggest using Calibre or another program to load eBooks into your Nook after you have gotten all the metadata correct for each book.) Keep the Nook 'awake' and do not allow the screen to enter sleep mode during loading of files. Make sure to load only about 3 minutes' worth, or no more than one LARGE movie file at a time onto the Nook, to prevent it from disconnecting and giving you an error pop-up.
That should do it, and if you have problems after this, then maybe ask around more. I only know how this works by my own extensive (and exhausting) trial and error...

[Q] Installing CM 10 on Nook HD+

I was installing CM from verygreen thread "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032364" Nook HD+ CM10 development (sdcard) updated 5/11.
I am using a san disk 32gb sd, i followed the steps unzip cwm image and write it to your sdcard using Win32 Disk Imager as he linked. Did that and booted into the nook hd, mounted it no problems. I haven't used ADB so i turned off the nook as it says to do and went to put the cm-10-20130511-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip on the sd card. One problem the sd card now shows 116mb only of the 32gb and with no option to reformat it to make it larger. I tried formating from CWM didn't do anything. Pleas help i read the forums link for about 30mins with no answer to solve this problem. Just seen pushing ADB which i'm not familiar with. Thanks for any help suggestions.

Thank you! One problem so far, i went and installed the cm10 and gapps on the internal sd. i rewrote the sd card with your 6028cwm.
Once i insert he SD it says on the bottom CWM v6.0.2.7 and it wouldn't mount the emmc to install Cm10. I rewrote the sd card again and it said it took and still same thing.
Also tried your newer ramdisk but i can not rename my old ramdisk.cwm once its in my computer.
EDIT: I was using the Micro to full size SD adapter and that was locking it. I took the Micro and put it right into a micro sd card reader and BAM! Installing now.

Ran into this problem where it just locks up on booting, I take the SD card out stock nook works great. Loads to 99% then nothing, just hangs. I let it sit for an hour even.

You are confusing me. This thread I'd for HD+. Yet you say the CWM said v6.0.2.7, which is for the HD. You should not be following my old guide if you are using verygreen's new SD scheme.... Oh I see your other comment was an old one....
The reason it stopped at 99% is the old SD version has too many partitions to allow stock to boot. It hands at 99%. To fix the problem, remove the SD before booting to stock.

With no SD card in it works great on stock nook. The problem i'm running into is it wont boot to CM with the SD in. I get the cynogen start screen then a laggy cynogen loading then it goes to the stock nook with the 99%.

So the problem i am having is i cannot boot to CM with the SD card in. Without the card it works fine.
With the card in its boots to CM screen and the circle loads choppy and then it swaps to the nook 99%.
I just want the CM to boot. Any help will be greatly appreciate it. I can boot to CWR and i did mount the SD card and still same problem.

You need to abandon that SD setup and start fresh with verygreen's new SD scheme. The old setup had some bugs. His new setup work much better. So go to his HD+ sdcard CM10.1 thread and start over with his early 7.1 cwm image. Then install his latest ROM and gapps and you will be very happy.
