I just bought my wife an iPod Touch for her birthday. The reason I told her was that her 2nd gen Nano was at the end of its life, but it was also as much because I wanted to give the iPhone OS a whirl to see what all the hype is about.
One of the first things I looked for in apps was an app to turn the wifi on/off. It's kind of annoying having to go into settings each time I... I mean she... wants to use wifi. Since there are at least a half dozen apps for WM that do that, I figured that there must be dozens of iPhone apps for that.
Guess what? I have yet to find one. Maybe it's just buried in the 100,000 apps, but searching both the App Store and Google have turned up nothing. YGTBFSM! Really? Isn't this about as simple an app as they get, yet would be incredibly useful? To be fair, I did come up with an app searching Google, but I haven't found any sign of it in the app store, and the app was written for the original iPhone (it was to turn EDGE on/off along with wifi).
My initial impressions of the device are that it is very nice, but I'm not blown away by it like all the fan boys said I would be. Frankly, I don't really see anything it will do that my Fuze won't (except to play Apple DRM music). Even the capacitive screen didn't amaze me. Visually, yes, it was beautiful. Web pages look great. But in terms of touch, I really didn't see any big difference over the resistive screens I'm used to. In fact, I have a really hard time typing on it, especially in portrait orientation.
Long story short... I'm glad I got her it. Now I know that I'm not really missing all that much not having an iPhone.
I like the ipod touch, but every other apple product(including the iphone) is for people with more money than tech sense.
there's an app where you can swipe the top status bar and a drop down menu appears where you can turn off 2g, wifi, etc. but i think its in cydia so it has to be jailbroken.
only thing i give apple in props is the games dont really lag from friends iphones that ive seen like on htcs... But idc apple can go stick it lol.
Well. I had WinMo, then got an iPod Touch.
Wi-Fi on the iPod doesn't use any battery when it's off, so there's no real point in turning it off. There's no app for that.
The "it just works" philosophy suits me perfectly, althought I'd like me some native GCal/Facebook sync.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was using the WiFi while it was off or not. But, it does use it while on and I... I mean she ... doesn't always need it on, especially when listening to music, so it seems like it would extend battery life to turn it off when not needed.

Unless you call an app that uses it (like Safari), it won't try connecting to unknown networks, so it doesn't suck battery as WinMo did.
I have my Galaxy Note now for a couple of months, and I realy like it. Never want to go back to a smaller phone again.
But using it for while now I only pull out the S-Pen when showing of my phone, telling everyone that it's a great feature to have.
So, maybe you guys want to share how you use your S-Pen in daily use?
I mostly use it at home, i guess about 70% of the time. Why don't you use it?
on the go i hardly use it...

And what do you do when you are using it at home?
Actually everything. Browsing, texting... I like the feel of it in my hand and when its sliding over the screen. long time ago i owned a PDA and now i noticed that i missed a stylus.
Maybe you just give it a try and get used to it - if u want to.
I used it couple of times.. When I actually wanted to write something on a paper but did not find it. Then I realized s-pen importance.
It can be very useful while travelling (when you have no piece of paper and want to write/remember something).
Sketching with Sketchbook Mobile
Games like World of Goo
At lunch times or at meetings when there is no paper or pen available to illustrate an idea or to help explain something
As way to talk/pass messages to friends in concerts or nightclubs. It's simpler than physical keyboard and quicker than onscreen one. Especially when a bit tipsy
So yeah, I use it few times a day and its really handy
I hate finger prints on my screen so i use it all the time other than when gaming.
I find it keeps the screen clean when im cooking if im using it for recipes, i also had a PDA back in the day an missed using a stylis.
I can't belive how well it fits in the phone body even though the s-pen so big, the only thing i dont like about it is the name. lol
I do not sketch, but I use it for drawing technical diagrams instead of doing the same on paper. I also use a flowchart type drawing app, and the pen is much better with that. That is for work.
I rarely write text, mainly because my writing is so awful even I cannot easily read it (I should have been a doctor). I do sometimes make quick notes with it rather than typing, and it is good for adding a note to the calendar instead of dicking with the entry for an event. I find that much quicker, like "drinks 4pm" instead of a couple of dozen clicks.
At home, I often fiddle with my launcher screen (ssLauncher - you can really fine-tune where everything is to 5 pixels), and the pen makes that much easier. I then typically just keep using the pen anyway, because it seems to glide over the glass more easily than my finder. I have very oily skin, and the peen keeps those prints off the screen.
I use it very often for shopping lists, and for other situations where I'd use a pen and paper. Last week for example I was out with one of my gfs friends, and she asked me. To remind my gf to give her a call about something. Perfect for the spen.

The only thing I use the S-Pen for is annotating pictures and screen-shots. I think my handwriting is incompatible with this device

I use the pen all the time. I much prefer it to using fingers unless I'm on the move or writing messages. Then I use dual thumbs.
I actually feel like I get more precision with the s-pen, and I like not getting finger prints all over the screen.

I don't use the S Pen much as it is too thin for my large hands however I use my Wacom pen regularly with it to take hand written notes as it is like using a real pen. Cannot work without it now.
As a side note for those of you with messy handwriting, try an app in the market called 7Notes, you will seriously be surprised with its accuracy in recognising your handwriting and converting it to digital text. Once you use it, you will find there's no going back!!! Currently its only in Beta, cannot wait for the full version.

Wow, this Is amazing. I've never used a handwriting tool that's actually worked before. my handwriting Is awful, and this works perfectly. I used it to write this post!
Edit: I've been playing with it for 5 minutes and I've gone back to swiftkey x. It works great, it's just that even the best handwriting recognition is still a bit awkward. Especially when it comes to editing your posts.

i love being able to annotate screenshots, and do so several times per day. this is the main feature that tipped the scales for me away from getting a Nexus.
otherwise, my handwriting is recognized quite well by the software, but i hardly ever bother with that
I don't use it much for writing, I find typing is far quicker and easier. My had writing isn't that bad on paper, but it looks like a child's scribblings on the Note.
I do use it for drawing though, which I'm getting quite good at. And often just for normal usage instead of my finger... no real reason for that, I just sometimes notice myself doing it.
I use it mainly for taking screenshots and to give my fingers a break. Installed this app called Freenote today which seems to be better than S Memo feature-wise. Will be using S Pen more with it from now on.
Also the pen is mightier than the finger when playing games like Fruit ninja.

Well am using Ultimate_N7000_V5.1 Jellybean rom and i have all the airview festures like galaxy note!
Btw. try the app from Play Store "Jotter for galaxy note" u have to pay for it but u can just crack it
Coming from the Nexus 4, which I loved and Jelly Bean, I just received my Nexus 5 yesterday and have some disappointments. Let me know if you guys agree and if I'm overlooking anything and can fix.
1 FIXED - Ok, Google sucks at making home screen launchers, apparently. I have to use an aftermarket app for my home screen) I LOVE Google Now. I used it quite a bit on my Nexus 4 by holding the home button and swiping up. Now they made it so Google Now is locked on the left side. WTF? I loved having my "home" screen in the middle, with two screens on the left and two on the right. I had a Trip It widget and Keep widget on the left, each on their own screen. I had some other often used apps on the right and my Calendar widget each on their own on the right. No screen was more than two swipes away. Now I have to swipe 4 screens to the right to get to my last one. That sucks. I can turn Google Now off to get my screens back, but then I don't have Google Now at all. This sucks, Google. What are you thinking?
2) I thought it made total sense to have the Play Store link right above the apps in the app drawer. When someone would ask, "do you have XXXX app?" I'd look and if I didn't, I could touch right there to enter the Play Store and download. Now, I have to scroll to find the Play Store app icon. Or put it on one of my screens. This seems like they're going backward here. Why remove that? To make it prettier? Aesthetics over functionality.
3 FIXED!) I love talking to my phone and used voice to text quite often. Now when I go to text someone, I can't see the mic anywhere on the keyboard. Really? Why did they rearrange the keyboard and remove this? Oh, now I get all these cute smiley faces and crap I'll NEVER use, but the mic is gone. Why?
4) Speaking of rearranged keyboard layouts, why change it up? I was pretty used to my Jelly Bean keyboard. Now they rearranged the exclamation point to the other side. And maybe others. I can't recall exactly until I start texting and hit a wrong key, pressing something which used to be another symbol. I'll eventually get used to that, but why change it? It was fine as it was.
5) HUGE icons. Why? To look my iPhone(ish)? Jelly Bean had 5 rows of 5. Now we get huge icons and 5 rows of 4. Not a huge deal, but if you have a bunch of apps, it takes longer to scroll through them all and you can't fit as many of your most used on one screen.
6) I love the home screen rotate on my Nexus 7. Google never thought to add this to the Nexus 4. And now it's not on the Nexus 5 either. I've used an app called "Rotate" to perform this and loved it, but now that Kit Kat extends the background to show behind the toolbars (which I love the look of, by the way), when I use "Rotate" to flip the home screen when I hold the phone horizontally, that black bar shows on the right. Again, not a huge problem here and maybe Rotate will update to a Kit Kat compatible version, but why doesn't Google add this functionality out of the box for its Nexus phones when they do it for the Nexus 7?
7) The notification sounds seem even quieter than the Nexus 4, which wasn't the loudest ever. I always turn vibrate on text OFF so when I'm texting back and forth, it's not unnecessarily wasting battery. But in doing so, I could most times hear my Nexus 4 chime when in my pocket. Not with the 5. I find myself pulling it out of my pocket every 15 mins to see if I missed any calls, emails or texts. I guess I'll have to turn on the notification vibration and sacrifice battery life, but that's lame.
If I'm overlooking anything which fixes any of these, please advise!
Oh well.

That's what I was hoping I did by accident, but I can't see where I would have. In settings > language & input > google keyboard settings, I have the
"voice input key" checked. I assumed that's what I need. I unchecked it, looked and the mic wasn't there. I re-checked it, looked and the mic isn't there. What am I overlooking?

I seriously don't want to man. I loved the Nexus 4 and was SO excited with this. But when you're used to things and they change for the worse (my opinion, things that are USEFUL to me), it's more than annoying, it's a real issue. 1, 2, 3 and 7 are all big deals to me. 1 - It makes the phone less simple. Most actions needed to get to what I use. 2 - same as 1, more steps needed to get to the Play Store. 3 - hopefully I'm overlooking something, but speaking my texts to my phone saved me A LOT of texting time. 7 - a ****ty speaker means I can't hear maps directions and have to look down at my phone more. That's not something I'm just trying to find an issue with, it's a real issue.

As for the speaker - I'm not sure what the complaints are about. It blows away my S3's and every other phone I've had...
Another one of these threads....#2 really? This is something to complain about.
I don't use Samsung products because I hate Touch Wiz and all the other bloatware on it. Yeah, I know it can be unlocked and modded, but I don't get into all of that. I came from an EVO 4G and liked it a lot, but once I got my Nexus 4, I could never go back to a phone with HTC Sense. The speaker was far better on the EVO though than the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5, to me, seems even quieter.

I kinda do agree with you on 1). I felt uncomfortable when first started to use Nexus 5 because I had a similar screens setup to yours on S4.
But I've changed my habits pretty quickly. Although I'm only using Calendar widget that occupies whole screen and one more screen (apart from home) for apps.
Why can't you just change your launcher and swipe up to open Google now.
These complaints are seriously getting out of control. Android is about options. If you don't like the way something acts, use something else. If you don't like the keyboard, use another one!
Yep. It's going backward in features. That was useful as hell. If you never used it, ok, but give me something to make things easier, I get used to it and dig it. Take it away and I'm annoyed. Why take it away? It reminds me of the "new" Google Maps. They took away a few features that I LOVED.
I'm tied into Google. I use a lot of their offerings. But I'm not going to blindly defend everything they throw out, I'm going to honestly say what I like and dislike.

Cool, suggest something for me, please. I don't like screwing with things too much, I like vanilla Android as Google intended. But I liked Jelly Bean Android. Kit Kat feels less intuitive. I know Android is all about the ability to be free and have different choices, but the reason I got rid of my HTC EVO was because I hate skins and crap on my Android. I just want it plain and yummy. If there's an alternative launcher that looks just like Jelly Bean, sweet, I'm all in. I just don't want it to give completely different functionality in other ways.

I'm actually considering going back to my Nexus 4 and selling this. Obviously, I won't be jumping to Kit Kat when it's available on the N4.
But this is why I post - maybe there are fixes.

Hey folks,
I thought it would be interesting to see whether the Glass Home launcher and its companion apps would work on the Gear - FYI the APKs I'm playing with are the XE7 ones at zhuowei's github site, although I note that Google have now posted the XE11 image at developers.google.com/glass/tools-downloads/system
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the launcher loaded up, recognised my "ok glass" voice command, and managed to go off and do the right thing when I asked it to "google how tall is the eiffel tower?"
However it seems to be unhappy about a few things (lots of FCs) - in particular the lack of WiFi on the Gear, believing that the device is offline even when it's actually tethered to my phone via Bluetooth, and the camera didn't work for me.
Anyone else got "Glass on Gear" experiences to share?
Cheers,
Martin
Good idea. Will be interesting to find out what needs to done
I do however feel my watch is a lot more useful than Glass (apart from lack of gps/wifi)
Provide some links I want to see this launcher etc.
Sorry, I'm a newbie so my ability to post links is somewhat limited. Let's see if this works... github.com/zhuowei/Xenologer
I think it's going to be a great way of getting a forward look at what to expect with Glass - and the Nexus watch And heck, we may well have the proper Glass SDK before Samsung release one for the Gear...
The UI is reasonably navigable using voice and swiping the touch screen. The Glass fonts work well on the small screen size, unlike say stock Android apps running under Nova or the Google Experience Launcher. Glass Home doesn't know about your non-Glass apps, though, which is understandable if a little disappointing.

Contact handling on glass is weird. You need contacts in your gmail account, then need to add individual contact to glass manually via app/website

The idea is excellent, although there's other factors to consider.. tethering always being active is going to be a battery drainer, along with the launcher constantly listening for commands..
Interesting thread... Looking forward to more updates on this... If I can get Google Now to work on this device paired without rooting the phone, Google Glass sounds pretty darn cool

It's also a bit clunky in that you have to swipe down to go back to the "ok glass" prompt, unless there is a voice shortcut that I've missed. It would be great to go totally handsfree with this, but shaking your wrist doesn't have an analogous effect to nodding your head when wearing Glass.
Oh, and the Bluetooth tethering is a bit flaky and tends to come unstuck after you have done three or four searches - going to look into the automatic reconnection thread when I get a few spare cycles

You can run the Google Experience Launcher from Kit-Kat, which will give you the "leftmost home screen is Google Now" feature. If you choose US language and download the offline speech recognition pack then you should find that the mic is permanently active too

The only way to go back using glass is to swipe down
Sounds like motion sensors are handled differently on each device (possibly Samsung propriety on the gear?)
What settings are shown in the settings screen? Is it only 'google' phrase that works? I think take picture and record are default on glass without need for app. Contact related stuff requires adding manually via app
I tried searching google, amazon, and this forum. No dice.

That is actually a good idea. I don't see why case manufacturers don't include this in their case designs as it would add another layer of protection to camera sensor.

There is absolutely no way, and I mean zero, someone could be looking at you through your selfie cam without you knowing.
Firstly, when the screen is off, the device cuts the feed to the camera. You can test this by using any number of apps that allow video calling and video call a friend using all of them and turn the screen off during the call. Your friend should report your video feed either freezing or going away entirely.
Secondly, and this is the most important one, the only way someone would be able to have access to your selfie cam is if you installed an app from some unknown source that grants someone access to use your selfie cam without your knowledge. And even then, you'd have to give the app permission to use the camera, first. Apps can't just start using your camera or your microphone without you knowing about it. They need explicit permission, first.
So, if this is a concern for you, go into all the apps in your app manager and turn off the camera permission for every app, except your camera. Or, hell, turn that off also, if you're scared Samsung is spying on you, like someone else on this forum is.
These devices aren't like Windows. You can't accidentally go onto a website and suddenly someone is using your webcam to look at you. Very nearly anything that happens on your device needs your explicit permission. They can't just take control of sensors or install apps willy-nilly without your knowledge.
Also, something someone said once about people sticking tape over their webcam on their laptops; let's say something like this actually happened. Your device is presumably laying on your desk or in your pocket for most of the day. So, for a good portion of the day, whomever is spying through your selfie cam will be looking at a ceiling or a dark pocket. The couple of times that you are using your device, all they'll be looking at is your face, looking at your screen. They can't see what you're doing or looking at, only your face. Why would someone want to hack your device just to look at your face for 5 minutes, a couple of times a day and look at the ceiling the rest of the day (this is assuming also they can access the camera while the device's screen is off, which they can't. So, essentially they'll be looking at a blank camera feed and staring at their monitor all day for that hopeful chance they'll catch you checking your email for 2 minutes, which won't help them anything, again, as all they'll see is your face and not what you're doing).
TL;DR
No need to be so paranoid about anyone spying on you. Trust me, your life isn't that interesting and the ceiling of your work place isn't either.

And yet, my question still stands and I still am looking for a case like this.
Thanks for the reply and information sir.
But the question is why? Lol. If it was a major concern wouldn't you think case manufacturing companies would jump on the chance to make a quick buck off people's paranoia? They would be offering all sorts of microphone blockers, cameras covers, etc..

Just buy any case, cutout a piece of paper, paint it if you would like, stick upper side of the paper to the case and thats it.
Idc if some fat dude is watching me. I always leave my phone upside down and also i dont use dex station so no way of anyone seeing me.
Also go ahead and test it yourself, open a videocall in whatsapp, when you turn the screen of the feed will freeze. If you still dont want to leave it as is, try the method i gave, works everytime. Or simply you can 3d print a case for yourself.
All that noise. If can be done in any way it is being done. You public schooled parrots.
To those of you that state it cannot be done or you have nothing to worry about you are VERY wrong. It happens all the time and doesn't take much to be able to infiltrate someones personal phone and turn on the mic or any of the cameras and apps WITHOUT alerting the end user(Yes that means even if the screen is off). Its a fairly common practice, so much so that those in my line of work that take it seriously buy the Vysk QS1 Quantum Security Case. The Vysk takes it a step further and also encrypts your phone calls. Information security is no joke and is rampant in the corporate espionage world. What the OP is looking for is a basic version of the Vysk that only blocks the cameras I think that is a great move and you should too. If you do not congratulations you been dumbed down and made so docile that you believe the world is all rainbows and fairytales. lol OP if you cannot afford the Vysk do what I used to do and tape the cameras with a small dot of electrical tape. Also to you entrepreneurial types, there is a market for camera blocking phone cases. Get on it!!!!
---------- Post added at 11:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:20 PM ----------
Also, OP forgot to mention there is a cheap alternative for the mic as well it's called Mic-Lock. There are also small webcam/phone cam sliders that are sold on Amazon just search webcam cover slider. And as another FYI your phone continues to gather data whether it is off or in airplane mode or not. The gyros and all the sensors are actually dialed up in when the phone is in airplane mode and caches all info recorded. As soon as it connects to a tower the cache is sent over to the servers. This is not science fiction or a conspiracy theory it is fact! Whether you choose to believe it or not. So much so that VIP's in many industries carry around portable dead boxes or what you would call a faraday cage to prevent information from exiting or entering the phone during closed-door meetings. You are right in worrying about your privacy OP as everyone should be....

OK just for clarification, why get a bloody smartphone in the first place........ I mean the only vibe I get from your post is to never get a smartphone, actually even a cell phone might be exposing yourself to unwanted "privacy intrusion", actually scratch that, the internet is a big flaming heap of privacy intrusion...... I hear foil makes for an excellent Faraday cage

hahahaha always with the tin foil labels. Jest all you want brother but in my industry and many other information security is no joke. So much so that it has grown to 100 billion dollar A YEAR industry. The numbers and security methods do not lie. If it wasn't an issue I wouldn't have a job right now.
Don't take my word for it, do your own independent research or don't and trust the bought and paid publications of your choice. I cannot post links due to me just joining this forum but if you search "Forbes Information security growth" you will see the industry went from 75B a year in 2015 to 124B in 2019. Click the second search result to read the article. Educate yourself instead of throwing out labels when you know absolutely nothing about the topic.

Always interesting when this is thrown out, look I do not doubt that infosec is a big thing, not only on a commercial level but on a national level too, I am all too aware of how unguarded our national infrastructure is. There are without doubts individuals and organisations who can easily compromise any given assests in our possession.
It is a game is acceptable risk, that is, I do not believe myself to be a valuable enough target, that they might expose themselves to detection, just for a bunch of compromising media on me, I mitigate some of this risk by following smart internet usage and not leaving anything that maybe valuable on an expose attack surface.
So again I will ask, because you did not answer, why get a smartphone given how large of an attack surface such a device pose, or indeed even use the internet.

Me, myself, am not too concerned about this. There is nothing, anyone can learn from hacking my camera or my mic. Firstly, they will notice my phone lays on my desk for a large part of the day and they will be staring at the ceiling, or the inside of my pocket. As far the mic is concerned, they'll only hear the radio station I prefer to listen to and sometimes the podcasts I listen to. As far as conversation, English isn't my native language, so they'll only hear me talking in a foreign language which they most likely won't understand, and even if they do, it will by and large be about my work, which is electrical repairs. I doubt them hearing me promising a client his board will be ready in 2 days, will be all that interesting.
Then of course, there is also the matter if they were happening to stream video or audio data from my device, I would notice very quickly, as my data bundles will run out very fast and I will notice the bandwidth traffic on my device, as I also have network traffic monitoring apps on my device so I can see which apps are the data hogs.
This is one thing conspiracy theorists never consider, is that it's not like in the movies where this information is streamed in real time with no means of noticing it. It would require an internet connection and needs to transfer large amounts of data. People on limited packages will notice their data running out very quickly, or if the person has a slow connection, they certainly won't be able to stream HD footage from a mobile device.
It might be possible to do the things you speak of, but it certainly won't be inconspicuous.

Assumptions.... I personally have a dumb phone but I am required to have a smartphone for work which is always in its vysk case that was included due to my works security measures. They are pricey! So if you are looking to purchase one yourself be prepared to pay to play.

Never made any assumptions, just did not notice your recommendation to the OP to forego his smartphone and get a standard cell phone (which are by no means any less secure given that even modern feature phones also runs on some OS or other that probably can parse java applets). I always thought that infosec would be using phones similar to the blackphone and call it a day.
