I'm on 3 paying £34/month for "all you can eat data".
I can tether (wi-fi hotspot), but as soon as I attempt to download a torrent it just cuts off my download and I need to reset my mobile data to get anything working again. (this happens when downloading a torrent on my phone also)
I can download through tethering but it seems to be capped at 100kb/sec for ROMs, etc from Safari.
Is there any way to by-pass this? Or will I have to just pay the £5/month extra?
I'm rooted, FWIW...
Thanks
Your on 3, on 3G, which is max 20mbps (mega bits) divide that by 8 to get your true download speed. Which is about 2.5MBps (Megabytes) your only getting 100KB (Kilobytes) that's crap.
What I would do is try your phone on a speed test in different places, so outside. In the city, at the shops etc. See what speeds you get, 3 is an awful network in all honesty. Chances are your only going to get about 7 -8 mbps (max) (megabits) meaning a download rate of 0.93MBps (Mega bytes) which is a lot more than what you have reported, speak with 3 and see what they say, just take a DEEEEEEEP breathe before phoning them, their customer services is utter #%%##%%#£
hope this helps
PS: unless you have made 3 aware of you tethering, they can and will block your tethered device, if you plan to hammer your connection, you will probably want to let them know, saying that I have a friend on 3 who hurts his connection daily and for a few years still hasnt been blocked. Yet another friend of mine got blocked for tethering his iPad for simple browsing.

Well, I get an 'H' connection 95% of the time, I'm usually getting around 9 -11mbps when I do speed tests - it's only when I tether to my laptop or download a torrent it gets sh*tty.
When I first got the phone a few weeks ago I downloaded a 2GB torrent on my phone with its mobile data connection with speeds up to 1.3Mb/sec, it finished in no-time, they've probably had this flag up and just capped me at 100kbps or something, as well as cut off torrents completely.
I just assumed all-you-can-eat would have included unlimited tethering - apparently not... But they are still letting me tether although it's not on my plan - for now, which is pretty cool.
Just came here to ask if there's a root app that would let me by-pass their restrictions before I pay the £5/month. :fingers-crossed:
I know, I've been with 3 before - I prefer a stress ball when I'm on the phone with them...

Three filter all p2p connections on there network it's called traffic filtering and it is pretty aggressive, they do this to increase the overall network speed so it doesn't get bogged down with everybody torrenting.

No app will allow you to pass three's traffic filtering, it's much the same as slowing speeds down at peak times so the network doesn't get stressed and slow down.
I'm pretty sure the £5 per month tethering bundle wouldn't help your downloading speeds while tethered either as the traffic filter still applies it just allows you to share your internet connection with other devices without breaching your terms and conditions within the contract.
Edit: You could try an app called Orbot (a port of Tor) which helps hide your traffic and see if that helps.

I have the issue here in HK, the easiest way to bypass this is by setting up a VPN service. Once all your network traffic is going through the VPN tunnel, 3 won't be able to filter anything, as all they would see would be VPN traffic.

Yes they can, but realistically, they won't.
VPN is used for all sorts of different things (business and personal), and so, there is no way they can block all VPN traffic without causing a PR disaster.
To the ISP, all VPN traffic will look like VPN traffic, they can't distinguish it between p2p VPN traffic and say Youtube VPN traffic.
Also, there is more than one type of VPN protocol, so blocking all of them will again be pretty difficult as well.

If you got a android device. On playstore theres a app called orbot. I use it with torrent downloads as i had same problem as you. With orbot. Neverget a tether warning and need to reboot

Before you plug in that USB cable, join that bluetooth PAN or blaze up that WMWifiRouter demo, you'd best fire up a bandwidth meter on your lappy to make sure you don't sail too far past that 5GB or whatever carrier monthly max lest yo' ass be surcharged up the ass! Note also that if you're running XP you've probably got virii up the ass and that when you tether, when those virii spit out those dirty packets to random IPs, that counts against your cap just as much as facebook and youtube and xda and slashdot.
So put on this jimmy cap. FreeMeter, found on sourceforge (so you know it's legit), lets you monitor your throughput, it plots that **** out on a pretty tiny chart and lets you keep comprehensive yet intelligible logs of incoming, outgoing and combined bandwidth. And most importantly you can set the thing to alert you when you're approaching whatever you set it to warn you about when you're approaching, it .. you get the idea. Use it, put it in Start Up.
Doug
or...
Disable phone as modem through Diamond Tweak/Adv Config/Registry Editor and not worry about bandwidth at all
Umm.. I'm talking about a tool for those of us who want to tether but don't want to get a $4000 bill and know their carrier's cap, not a way to prevent people from accidentally tethering if that's what you're getting at.
I'm fairly certain that a carrier who wants to either tame network traffic or make more money from people downloading movies over their phone counts transmitted bytes on their own routers, not your phone, plus they probably don't warn you or clip off the connection when you hit any cap they may have set in their TOS, so this thing I posted is a tool for tethering (or just satisfying your curiosity).
Anyone know if these carriers cap just downloaded bandwidth or the combined figure for up and down data? And has anyone run into an enforcement situation and gotten a larger bill due to exceeding some data limit on an unlimited plan? And can carriers figure out whether I'm listening to Howard on SiriusWM5 versus downloading Linux ISOs on my laptop?
Unlimited data plan for the win. I'm glad I don't have to worry about caps
Well I don't know. According to this, assuming it hasn't been changed since Jan 08, if you use their Data Connect plan which I believe may be [partly] defined as using the isp.cingular access point rather than wap.cingular, you have a "soft limit" of 5GB a month. If you go over that "repeatedly," at least at the time of this policy from almost a year and a half ago, AT&T might send you a letter advising you of your overindulgance and threaten to "remove the feature" if you keep it up. And that's for legit tethering. I'm not sure if regular data, like streaming media on the phone without tethering, counts against that number which is of some concern to me as I listen to Sirius a lot and like to do it on isp.cingular because, I don't know, I just like to.
As for under-the-radar tethering without a plan using an unlimited MEdia Net plan through the natted WAP, well, I'm safely guessing that that's a TOS violation and it could get ugly if you burn through enough data to get their attention. Ugly meaning at best a warning or possibly signing you up automatically to the Data Connect plan. I'm speaking out my ass here mostly but I might be right. Anyway I think that applies to most of us here so that's why I put up the bandwidth meter (and for those of other carriers like Verizon who are more anal) to keep y'all under the radar as I don't think AT&T immediately knows (or cares) if the packets going through their routers originated originally from your phone or a computer. I imagine that takes careful packet parsing that might just be out of the question to do for everyone all the time. Tallying up gigabytes on the other hand, that they probably do. But I wish they would pour more money into infrastructure because bandwidth is getting pretty thin in my city during the day. Can barely listen to Howard without frequent buffering.
What I'm more nervous about however is Time Warner doing the same thing for my Internet like they've been doing in other markets. Latest word is that they're backing down but if they start up I'll sign up for FiOS.
Overall I've been pleased with AT&T. Today my old man needed help signing on to his company email using a Java thin-client a la citrix and couldn't get it going on my mom's Kubuntu Linux laptop. So I fired up WMWifiRouter on a train from Connecticut going around 80mph and was able to VNC (like remote desktop) to his laptop (Linux, btw) using my laptop through my phone /while actually on the phone with him/ while having two SSH terminals open behind it to fix it. That's pretty badass, to me, doing all that flying through tunnels, real and technological bouncing from one cell to the next.

ahh yes
I quite often forget how the majority of users here at XDA are on GSM networks. I was speaking of using "HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings\ForceCellConnection=Sprint" to force all data connections from the device to use the 'Sprint' (used for data connections on the device) connection versus the 'Phone As Modem' connection that triggers the counter for Sprint's 5GB cap. Nice app though. After using and exploring all possible upgrades and features of a P.O.S. Treo 700p as a "in between" device while I switched from T-Mobile to my Dad's corporate Sprint plan, I discovered this similar app from Sprint. Just in case any Sprint WM users wanted to be completely legit/keep track of their tethering from a non-WM device.

If it goes through a proxy it will screw things up. I once did a GPRS test (on an SE W580i) and got 40kbps with the SE browser. On opera mini it would tell me I was on 56MB
I did the test off and on now with around the same results
it says compared to other isps its about 9 times faster, i thought for sure there was an error, or just extremely lucky.

Okay if you want to do this right, first turn off any compression you may have enabled in Connections. Tether up a laptop with wmwifirouter (grab a trial). Might as well turn up your wifi strength on the phone but that may not matter. On the computer make sure you've got no crap running in the background that uses bandwidth including IM and p2p obviously on either the phone or the computer. Fire up a browser and do multiple tests from multiple servers on http://speakeasy.net/speedtest.
When you're done, for good measure, repeat but tethering through usb not wifi. I believe wifi may be faster than wifi and it does matter when you're testing a connection with possible but very unlikely throughput in the neighborhood of six bonded T1 lines.
Doug
edit: Sometimes carriers and ISPs cheat on their customers' bandwidth testing by packet bursting, shaping, throttling and proxy tricks. Since you're seeing insane (and most likely erroneous) speed results and if you want to bother getting to the bottom of this, in addition or instead of doing what I said, tether up with your computer, install this little simple bandwidth meter (on the computer) which I attached and download this 256.5MB copy of OpenBSD from this mirror on your computer:
ftp://filedump.se.rit.edu/pub/OpenBSD/4.5/amd64/install45.iso
And watch your bandwidth meter. Also fire up your best stopwatch and clock the full download and do some math to get the speed.
While you're at it figure out a way to upload a >10MB file somewhere and clock that too. Be advised your throughput testing may be confounded by the time of day and your carrier's network saturation in addition to your signal strength which might vary if you've got your laptop screen in between your phone and the path to the nearest tower.
Wow I guess I turned this into a big project.
edit: if you don't have access to another machine or are too lazy to do the tethering thing at least use dslreports/mspeed to download a 1MB test as opposed to mobilespeedtest.com's 512KB.

Alright Guys My ISP is Clearwire and i have the no preset download cap and 1mb upload cap. Know its satellite but on my modem i have usually 4 out of 5 bars.
I Live in Fort worth and on speedtest.net it thinks Dallas server is closer haha.
My speed test 1 Dallas Server i live in Ft. Worth
My Speed Test 2 Oklahoma Server
My Speed Test 3 Ft. Worth Server
My problem is when i play black ops on my ps3 i usually get 1 to 2 bars and im hard wired into router and it says i have NAT type is strict or moderate. shouldn't it be open seeing how im hard wired into router?
What can i do to not have this issue? my only options for internet are att and clear and i had att and it was worse than clear. could it be issues with my settings on my computer? any help is appreciated
Also when i actually go and download files i never hit that speed the highest i can hit is 700KB/s and when im supposed to be getting 3 to 6MB/s
Have a look at your ISP Terms and Conditions and their own forums if they have any. Otherwise find forums specific to broadband. It's possible you have a technical issue... it's equally possible that your ISP throttles certain traffic.
If you are getting a certain speed using speedtest, but less with other things, it might point to throttling. What downloads have you tried to test this? Try a simple http download like a file from Google Docs for instance. You may find this running as fast as your speetest result, while bittorrent traffic could be slow.
You should contact your ISP too and see what they have to say about it.

ATT there worse and i was talking to them they have a 6mb connection but its cut in half as advertised
Hi,
I use New Zealand Vodafone, and prepay plan for 3g,
it is only 100mb per month, and when I turned on my 3g about 2 hours, and my vodafone widget showed me 10mb used.
however, I did not touch my phone at all, and 10mb internet usage gone.
I know there are little bit traffic even if I don't use, but 10mb is a lot.
When I used Nexus S there was no issue with 3g, and 100mb was enough..!!!
So, I would ask any guys have had measure 3g usage?
all depends on what apps you are running etc
yeah.. main thing is the background apps. i hope there is some way to find out which apps are using internet at the background.
what you can do is press the power button for a second and you'll get a menu. just deactivate data connection. activate it only when you need something. but obviously, this means you wont get any real time incoming messages from messenger apps. but still you save a lot of data usage.. and battery
There is 3g watch dog or something application is there, you can get idea which application consuming how much data.
100MB is enough??
I'm on a 1GB 3G plan and its been 10 days or so 300mb is already gone and i'm not using the fone for youtube or something. Its just emails, Latitude social networking and whatspping.
I barely use my wifi now as 3G is much faster
This must be a joke right? 2gb a months i have which is quite terrible. Switching to unlimited network soon.

In that case just disable data network and use only wifi :/
You can install some network tracker to see which apps use net. Turn off auto updating in abdroid market for all apps

Wow only 100mb!
I have a limit of 1000mb, which can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but if you use WiFi at home, it is not a big issue.
Anyways, as the others said, use an app to track what uses the data.
I use sometimes only 2-5MB per day with normal use.
I use My Data Manager to keep track of my use , it is a great program, it shows the usage in the drop down menu
Try netcounter or 3g watch dog apps, you can set your own daily weekly monthly alerts, think 3g watch dog can be linked to app called apndroid to cut off usage when limits crossed. But in your situation best to switch off mobile network from settings menu to avoid excessive data charges.
For example I crossed 500 Mb today in less than half hour downloading some games and additional files from gameloft.
Use opera mini browser for decreasing data use when browsing and don't use stock browser when using mobile network.use stock browser only when on wifi in your scenario.switch off all synching in settings menu.switch off roaming in menu as well.but then doing all this you limit the devices capabilities but you have got to do what you need to do to suit your predicament
We have 2gb for 10$/month and 10gb for 20$/month, I think I'm switching to 10gb because I still feel like I limit myself

Yes 100 MB is quite less, n difficult to manage, when you have lovely G-Note on your Hand.
I am using 500MB/month plan. but actually i do have wifi access at both Home n Work place. I simply managed it with app phoneweaver. It turns on wifi n turns off when i am reaching n leaving from these places. In addition it swithoff data + wifi both just after few min of my sleeping time, as well turns on just before i wakeup.

It might be useful to consider a COMBINATION of options:
1. Consider switing to a 2G network connection if available, as the same is much cheaper than a 3G in your area. Needless to mention, u will have to compromise the speed while on 2G
2. Use Wifi, is appropriate places, and as suggested by Dr.Ketan, u may use apps like phoneweaver etc. to manage the location based switing of wifi/ data network
3. Use apps like 3Gwatchdog to monitor your apps and kill unnecessary data hogers
4. and yes, if u love your note, U MUST HAVE DATA NETWORK or WIFI connection always ON, as or else... u know u are not optimizing you investment on note
5: Last but not the least: I believe, if u can afford a superb device like note, then I am sure its just a matter of "state of mind" to UPGRADE and get ADAPTED to a good 3G scheme. (am based in India, and I am on Vodafone 3G plan of 3GB per month, and I pay INR 850 (thats about USD 16.7 per month), and initially I thought this was too much I am used to this "state of mind"..... just give this a thought my friend
Power Button and Switch "Data Network Mode" off. Forever.
I don't know how you guys survive with 100MB per month. They shouldn't even have a plan like that.
I was able to adapt my non-smartphone data plan to the gNote on ATT
So unlimited costs me 15$/month
I use at least 15GB a month.
I was wondering if there's a workaround to the T-Mobile tether throttle on the One plan. I'm currently waiting on my replacement but was hoping to be able to get the workaround running asap. Thanks in advanced!
i am wondering the same thing about this and if there is a way to bypass the 480p cap on it ..

Well, that is just the beginning of not so nice things within the new plan. The new plan is really about throttling users after a small amount of data. Unlimited, just not unlimited high speed. Which is the reason I stayed with my old plan.

So true.
Forgot to mention about T-Mobile making Tethering users to be as monsters in their campaigns.

That should totally be against the law. If i want to use up all my data watching netflix at full video quality it is my prerogative I say.

T-Mobile One is unlimited data, no buckets, so you're gonna use up infinity data at full quality with your proposal
My guess is you could root and probably use a 3rd party app to tether at LTE speeds. I've been wondering the same thing myself so I'm following to see what everybody else says lol
I have tried WiFi Tether Router by Fabio Grasso, but it doesn't help. Tried all different settings/methods combinations. Still tethers at the same speeds as Android native tethering.
I also tried changing User Agent string on my tablet and laptop to clone my Nexus 6's string but still not helping.
I did use to tether heavily, many months of around 300 GBs of data with this app "Wifi Tether Router". It's perfect for bypassing quotas, but so far not working for throttling.
Interesting fact: T-Mobile is letting speedtest.net traffic through without throttling, so if you run it, you'll notice it shows LTE speeds. However, if you run any other test like speedof.me (which is my favorite!) you'll be throttled.
I'll keep you guys posted when I figure it our. Shouldn't take long.

Have you tried a VPN?
You can download "WiFi Tether Router" in the Playstore, if you're rooted, it gives you unlimited tethering.

You have to edit build.prop file. You can do that easily by downloading the app called "BuildProp Editor" in the Playstore. Then look for the string called "net.tethering.noprovisioning" and set it to true. then it should be working no problem.
Any solution yet to this???
Found a kinda solution. I downloaded foxfi and the key (if you need the key I can send you the link) and turned it on and chose "run proxy" then connect your laptop, PlayStation, Xbox etc to the proxy and it will tether more than 500kbps I'm using my hotspot to watch Netflix on my PlayStation right now and there's hardly any buffer time so it's working for me.
Ugh wish I would've found this thread before the I upgraded to xfinity wifi...just got a $177 bill the other day so pissed

Method 1 – Dun = 0 [Android Only]
Requirements: Windows PC, USB cable
Download the ADB and Fastboot installer from XDA-developers. Select Yes when prompted by installation options (install ADB and fastboot, install system-wide, and install drivers).
Enable USB Debugging on your phone/tablet.
Connect your phone to your computer via USB cable.
Open up the command prompt.
Click Start, in the search Type in cmd. Next, Click on the program cmd (or Command Prompt).
Type “adb shell” and press enter.
Don’t type the quotation marks “”, just the text inside them!
Type “settings put global tether_dun_required 0” and press enter.
Note: If you see “error: device not found” it is usually because A) you need to update your phone USB drivers on your PC or B) your USB cable isn’t capable of transmitting data because it is only designed to charge the phone or C) USB Debugging isn’t enabled.

- Got this from Groovypost.com ... It also says you can change your TTL setting in the registry to 65 and that also works...
Here's the link for more info: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/hide-data-usage-get-truly-unlimited-tethering-tmobile-one/

Do you still get throttled to 128kbs or whatever?
