Hi to all
I went to Samsung Thailand yesterday to have check to see if by battery was replaceable under warranty and to make a very long story short the Tech managed to soft brick? my note by constantly pulling out the usb cable from the bottom of the phone while the unit was powering down and up. Their response "Sorry about that but we will repair it by replacing your Main board but you have lost your data" WTF !!!
So now my note starts to boot but per normal but gets to the pulsating Samsung Logo and hangs and keeps pulsating then the top rear of the phone gets quite hot after a few minutes. I can boot into download mode Vol dwn+ pwr and recovery mode. The phone had no issues apart from the battery so understandably I'm not happy.
Okay I need some advice as I dont want to loose my data particularly:crying: the photos and sms (dont we all) and am in desperate need of some good advice and directions
Oh I forgot my note was stock running the latest version of JB
1. Can i try to flash a new rom? If so how? (point me in the right direction)
2. Will I loose my data? Particularly sms and photos?
3. Does the unit heat up mean the fried the MB?
I appreciate any and all your time and responses..
Many thanks
Why didn't you accept the nice offer for replacing the mainboard?
(I did when they repaired my display in Samsung Udon Thani)
If you want to save your data you should install a Custom Rom with no-wipe.
Thank you

I'm more than happy for them to replace the main board but they said I will loose all my data and dont want to try to recover the problem they caused.
So I would like to attempt to perhaps flash the rom again in an attempt to save the data, I'm looking for advice on the correct procedure... The Jb update was done via KIES.
Thank you I appreciate your reply, any easy way to flash the rom? Just download and image go into download mode a flash via odin?
Arg still no success

I tried re-flashing the original rom using odin. It installs successfully but when it unpacks and reboots it hangs in the same spot (the pulsating Samsung logo) Any ideas?
Many thanks :crying:

You made a "dirty" install because the original Rom was a no-wipe Rom.
I think you should install a Kernel from Philz thread. Take the latest for LT4. Install it and reboot into recovery.
Then clean cache/dalvik cache and make a factory reset.
After that you can install any Custom Rom from this recovery you want.
Thank you

Dear ThaiDai
Thank your for your helpful reply, and sorry about the following questions as I'm starting to feel little out of my depth
Just checking the procedure as follows:
Step 1: I have downloaded the tar file PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-4.93.6.tar .. I then use ODIN to flash it per normal.. ( I think if I understand it my phone is then rooted)
Step 2: I reboot into recovery , clean the cache partition and do a factory reset ( wont this delete the data i'm try to recover? )
Step 3: Will this then allow for me to access my files ? or do I then still have to install a new rom?
Step 4: Then I reinstall the stock Samsung rom? and have access to the data?
Again Thanks for your time and patience, much appreciated

You need to be a little more clear.
Factory reset will clear app data, but will leave the data in your internal memory card intact.
Which one do you want to save, app data or internal card data?
I don't think we'll be able to save app data although Thai dai is more experienced, he may know of something.
Thank you

Thank you warfareonly for your response
It was the app data NOT the Apps that's important... Particularly SMS,and photos which had contact details on a recent business trip. (i'm just not sure where they are stored by default)
From my understanding is flashing a rom doesn't delete the app data as it's effecting the rom only..
AS opposed to a factory reset which wipes the apps and app data (which I'm trying to avoid)
Many thanks I appreciate your reply
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
That is where SMS are stored. Boot into recovery, go to mounts and storage, Mount /data, attach mobile to PC and copy the above file to your PC.
Your pictures will survive the factory reset as they are stored on the memory card directly and not in the /system or /data partition.
P.S. make sure you have Samsung drivers installed.
Later, simply copy back the file to mobile.
P.P.S I'll be offline for 3 hours, any more difficulties, we'll solve later.
Thank you! whats next?

You have an external sd card in the phone ? And a way to read the data off the sd card ? If not, then procure both,I have a roundabout idea.
Follow these steps:
1.)Install Philz kernel & reboot to recovery
2.)Take a backup of the ROM.
3.)Take out the sdcard, mount it on a laptop/PC/whatever and go here G:\clockworkmod\backup (where G is drive letter of your card)
4.)If there are more than one folders over there, open the latest one.
5.)There must be a file called [data.ext4.tar.a] without brackets,of course.Rename it to [data.ext4.tar]
6.)Open up the archive and go here /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
7.)Extract the whole databases folder and keep it somewhere safe.
Now, we have 2 options- Try to install a new ROM and restore the sms OR access the sms on PC.
Luckily, we can do both
M1)Install new ROM
Install any ROM.I suggest going with SlimBean whenever coming out of a brick. It is only 80mb, therefore light as hell.Don't go with a heavy ROM(~700 MB)
Now paste the databases folder to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/
Reboot to recovery and fix permissions (look around, you'll find the option, I don't remember where it is right now :silly
Check if you have your messages back.
M2)View directly on PC
Download SQlite Database browser
Open up the mmssms.db file in the databases folder with it.
Select the browser data tab and choose words_content table from the dropdown list.
There, now you have a list of all the messages you sent.
Don't forget the thanks button
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!!
I now have a copy of the database... however I cant seem to read then the file is large I can see carriers and various types of information but not the sms.
So I will go with installing a new rom.
Is there anything I should do before trying to install the new rom eg wipe cache etc.
THANKS HEAPS!! you answers have been extremely helpful

Just follow the installation instructions on the ROM page. Also, I will again advise you to use a light ROM. If you want touchwiz, pristine is the lightest ROM I know. If aosp, then try slimbean or asylum.
Next time you can backup your sms&mms with samsung account. You can backup photos with Dropbox. That's why we have this option on the phone. Pictures are originally (if you didn't changed this in camera settings)stored to internal sd in DCIM folder and it will not be deleted after factory reset (only after "format internal memory" command in settings or in recovery. BTW,pictures&music is not an app data.App data are app settings, games progress&scores,etc...

Almost there!! Thank you!!!. Just a few more steps?

:fingers-crossed: Okay ...So far so good.. I copied the original rom. Did a factory reset and to my surprise the factory rom booted to stock... (rooted of course) So surprised!! :good::good:
However it's the next step I'm a little confused on.. Should I then make a copy of this rom add the necessary telephony files to it... then re-flash it as it then has the missing data and fix permissions or is there something I am missing? (sorry to sound so stupid)
Again THANK YOU!! your answers have been spot on... I appreciate all your time

Just follow the m1 method from the eleventh post. Since you already have a working ROM, simply copy the databases folder to where its supposed to be.

I am very new to this, so I am not sure what to looks for on the forum.
I generally followed instructions from Lifehacker and this forum, used androot to root my phone, done it after two days.. (finally figured out I had to downgrade my phone.. )
So now I'm rooted, I have super user access, and I have rom manager installed. Here are a couple of things I know I want to get to do:
- install froyo (as stable as possible)
- uninstall sprint crapware (the NFL, navigation and others.. who needs them)
- possibly overclocking a little by what I read, I have another battery and I'm willing to try and give overclock a "little" each time to see if it works.
Before I do anything (I backed up my current settings with rom manager), I wanted to post here and ask you guys what I should do first, and how do I restore things back to normal if something goes wrong?
Thanks a bunch!

If you install CM, it will remove all apps anyways. If you want to know how to remove apps - there are threads all over the place for it.
Also, attached is a script I wrote to remove apps (apk). It's a very simple straightforward script. Here's what you do, create a subfolder (not needed) on your sdcard, copy the two files into the folder, update "Apps-to-remove,txt" with all the apks you want to remove (with the full path) and run the script through terminal or adb shell. This script is not needed, but just simplifies the job, that's all.

Goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756774, read through and use, as appropriate. If you use the latest build by Jaybob, you may not need any kernels from this thread, as the builds have the latest code.
Hope this helps.

To restore everything back to "Out-of-the-box", just run the official RUU from HTC/Sprint.
Thanks Andy.
Right now I'm going through Roms (I heard good things about Cyanogen but I can't download it because their registration page is messed up..) and I tried what comes for free with Rom Manager, which almost gave me a heart attack when the phone started... fortunately I read the instructions to restoring things so I was able to get back to my old rom (whew!!)
But now, for some reason, I don't have the market app on my phone! how am I to download rom manager...
Is it possible to chat with you or someone at least for a couple of minutes as I go through this, because at this rate I won't have my phone working well until tomorrow >.>
You need to install GAPPS, once you install a ROM.
I would highly recommend CM. The builds Jaybob has put together are based on CM code, take the latest (12/08) - it's stable. BTW, it's a mediafire link, so you should be good. I just downloaded the latest, y'day... works like a charm... (Thanks JayBob and Cm and everyone - can't say that enough).
The best way to install rom is:
1. Download copy ROM and gapps to your SDcard's root
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Wipe everything - Wipe/Factory reset, Wipe cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache
4. Install ROM from zip
5. Install Gapps from zip
6. Reboot - btw, the first reboot after a rom/gapps install takes a while, so don't be alarmed.
You can PM me, if needed.
I installed that last Rom via Rom Manager, which did it pretty much automatically.. so I didn't try to install a Rom via the SD card yet.
To make things worse, the phone does not recognized it's connected to a computer at all (there is no USB icon on my phone's notification bar) so I can restore it being to old sprint crap. No Market app, no way of installing anything or communicating with the phone, my backup, when I restore it, brings back the old HTC but without the market app and as I said, no USB support.
heeeeeelllllllllppppppppppppp
Ok,
I managed to restore things back to the old Sprint RUU. I noticed the SD card was *completely* out of room, which might have messed up my backups. I still don't know where these backups reside or how much room do they take, but making sure you have enough room on the SD card is important, as I think I have learned the hard way.
Important: the RUU detected my phone and installed *even without* the usb icon or my computer treating my phone as a "usb storage device". So resorting to this option, even though annoying (have to install and gain root access all over again), is helpful to have.
Now I am going to format my SD card, which doesn't have any important information, I don't think (my documents are all backed up anywhere and try and install the CM rom from a zip file, which I'm not sure how to do yet (people like me are used to have something like setup.exe, and everything works from there...) so I'm going to read and go step by step.
ROM installation is pretty simple, once you get your recovery going... just make sure you wipe everything, as I mentioned earlier to you...

Had it not been for reading this again, I would have been waiting for a reply. This was awesome and now I am back to business. Thanks a ton for this. i now have what i need to do this on my wife's Hero. Thanks again
Let me apologize first of all as I come from 5 years of using Windows Mobile knwoing what I am doing (cooking ROMs included) and now just got my Galaxy /Android a couple weeks ago and am blank at all of it.
After messing up with some system files and (useless) stock applications (like I removed stk.apk and other stuff) I decided to do a full hardware reset as the phone started getting random crashes.
But after the full reset things only got dramatically worse. I quickly realized all the missing system apps are still missing (I thought they'd be "restored") and basically nothing works, just crashes one after the next, cant use anything.
So, a hardware system reset on the galaxy, doesnt really reset anything except user installed apps and settings... amazing
Can someone please tell me (the idiot here, I know) how to do a real full restore where all system files, all missing files and positively everything gets back in the Tab as it was originally?
What a flippin' nightmare... Thanks in advance very much!
deletion of Stk.apk causes FC's in phone and acore.
if you don't have a backup of this apk, download a rom (like Modaco or Overcome),
open with winzip and extract the Stk.zpk from system/app and push it to /system/app on your Tab using adb (remember set the permissions to 644 after push).
A hardreset NO restores deletions on /system
Note: Other files that are not deleteable in /system/app are: Browser.apk, Email.apk, TouchWiz30Launcher.apk and TwWallpaperChooser.apk
Note (2): For your convenience, i attach the Stk.apk file from Overcome-1.1.3. Try it
Note (3): In order to restore ALL system data and apps, you need to restore a full rom.

OK, first of all a big thanks for both file and info. Aside from the Stk.apk, the biggest thing that made me run into problems was trying to update my Contacts.apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=907399
things didnt work out for me and even after restoring the original files (Contacts.apk and Contacts.odex) nothing really worked again, reason for wich I tried a system reset.
Now, do I need to re-root the Tab or its still rooted, and can I perform the operations easily with Root Explorer like I did before? You mentioned to use adb and set permissions to 644 after push but, sorry again for the ignorance, I have no clue what adb is nor what/how to set permissions. Pathetic to be ignorant huh?
My last 2 questions are, where could I find the original Contacts.apk and Contacts.odex and if needed a full ROM to do a total restore?... hopefully I wont need to get to that point?...
Thanks a million again.
hi,
try to download overcome-1.1.3, and extract all the deleted apk's from system/app directory. push into the /system/app in your tab.
the apk's of overcome are deodexed (you don't need the .odex files). after that, wipe your data/cache and reboot.
if this don't works, try with roto rom

Hmmmm thanks again but I think Im beyond all this. I dont have a file manager on my system, just realized I deleted the useless stock one and had repalced it with Root Explorer and ES File Explorer. I have them on my External SD Card to install them again but withou a file manager or an app installer cant get to them. And I tried download an app installer from the Market and get Framework errors non-stop and downloads do not initialize... I think Im beyond a quick fix... how do I get my hands on a stock full ROM to restore everything... and how? What a nightmare... gotta tell you, I love Windows Mobile... I love it... never ran into anything like this in the past 5 years of using it... never...
Thanks again!

Cant. Dont even know if I need Kies installed or not (I did have it installed) but adb just asks me to connect the phone and thats it... its connected aready... this is desperating...
OK I did manage to connect with adb but, how to I install applications? I can navigate to my SD card where I have ES File Explorer and Root Explorer but dont seem to be able to install them... Also if i try to copy Stk.apk I get immediately an failute message... this is crazy...
OK so I managed to install ES File Explorer and Root Explorer with adb... crazy process. It seems my phone is still rooted after the reset. From the phone I copied Stk.apk back to /system/apps where it was before deleted.
But needless to say nothing got fixed... not sure if Stk.apk is now "actually" installed or just there in the folder. But still nothing works and crashes every 10 seconds... logs provider, dialer, phone, framework, contacts... its all a firework of crashes...
Given that you've hard reset your device already, you are pretty much wasting your time trying to "fix" what you broke by messing with /system, and you should really just flash another ROM.
My suggestion would be to follow the advice on this thread.
Regards,
Dave
Yeap, that what i did and it was succesfull. My only issue is that Id like to convert my Tab's file system to ext4 to improve speed and performance and then update to the 1.4Ghz OC Kernel. I have no idea how to do those 2 things... actually Im not sure I understand the difference between a ROM and a Kernel... I assume a Kernel is part of the engine of the ROM itself but I have no idea how to perform the update. I read countless threads and its all scattered info without finding one straight to the point guide on how to do it...

Part of your problem is that you are trying to run before you can walk! Your experience with WinMo is of pretty much no use to you in the Linux/Android world, and until you get a better handle of how everything hands together you are always going to feel a little lost.
Personally, since your device is now up and running again, I'd suggest that you hold off doing anything else for while, until you get a chance to catch up with some of the basics. Once you are a little more familiar, you can then start with something simple like flashing the MoDaCo kernel (instructions here) to support EXT4, and to give you access to ClockworkMod recovery.
IMO, whilst EXT4 and O/C kernels will give you a performance boost, they are not as noticeable as jumping from a shipping ROM to one of the JMx development builds that Samsung has put out. If you are running JMI, you should already be feeling that the device has got much snappier.

Dave

Yes Dave you are right, right and right again!!! Thank you for the wisdom and advice!!!
The main thing I have understood with today's messy experience was that the actual ROM files are never deleted or damaged as long as you dont access them via a rooted tool and start deleting them. Now I understand that Titanium Backup, Sprint Backup (my favorite), My Backup Pro and others, only back-up and restore what the user installs on top of the ROM itself. So a full "reset" wipes all that data but leaves the ROM files as they always were. If they got damaged in the process, they'll still be damaged till a a full ROM restores all system data, now I get it.
What I still dont get is the issue of bakcing up and restoring. In Windows Mobile, a toll like SPB Backup has a simple option called FULL BACKUP and that backs-up everything on top of the ROM and then restores everything after a full reset on top of the ROM again like it was before. The problem I have with apps like Titanium Backup, Sprint Backup, My Backup Pro, etc... is that there is not a "BACKUP ALL" option... one has to backup "data", "settings", "apps" and I always feel stuff will be left behind and then not restored.
Till I find an app or way to do a simple one-click "backup everything" and then "restore evertything" I always feel vulnerable to changes I make to the Tab that may get it unstable or corrupt and then not being able to be restored properly without a full ROM Flash and then re-installing all from scratch.
With WinMo, I could do all sorts of crazy experiments and tweaking and after that, a registry restore or back-up restore would bring me back my phone to exactly like it was with all my stuff and configuration in a matter of seconds or minutes. Thats what I need to find out with this Tab/Android and then Im ready to be able to explore messing up with this knowing I can always easily go back within minutes to the state I had before with all my apps and settings.
This is what I need to learn next how to do! Trampoline without a safety net is not a good idea. Ive alwways loved WinMo for the ease of backing up and restoring whatever I was doing on my handsets withjout ever worrying to put myself at risk to loose it all. I need to learn this on Android and its definitely more intricate!

no...you need a kernel to flash via odin, you need sdcard mounted so that it will backup all files automatically while converting to ext4..head over to modaco kernel section amd follow the instruction.

Where is the modaco kernel section you refer to? I can search for hours and find zilch... these blogs are endless...

What you want is a Nandroid backup, which you can only make from a recovery image like Clockworkmod recovery.
Essentially, this does exactly what you want, but you need to flash a new kernel (e.g. the MoDaCo kernel) which supports Clockwordmod.

When I delete stk.apk (for me useless useless useless) the first thing that happens immediately is that when I hang-up on a call made or received, the Tab vibrates then freezes for about 5 seconds then tells me the phone application has crashed. I tried this with 2 ROMs now as a test and its guaranteed. More even, if you use a program like SYSTEM APP REMOVER you can emulate the removal of an app by disabling it... it only takes me to disable STK and a reboot for the phone not to work. cant get rid of it, that simple
Hi all,
I have a rooted Rogers Captivate running stock Rogers 2.2 with OCLF. The other day I installed busybox and anim mod, and today I decided to change my transitions with anim mod.
After applying the change, it asked me to restart my phone. I clicked yes, and it hung for a moment before showing a force close screen. However, before I could do anything, it reset, but after the logos and startup animation, it vibrated and went to black. The soft keys still light up, but no buttons including holding down power have any effect.
After pulling out the battery, I discovered I could still get to recovery console (and I'm fairly certain I could get into download mode as well), but my main concern is getting to / backing up my contacts.
Your help would be enormously appreciated!

1. Check the files that are present in the theme u installed - typically the files under the system folders
2. Ask ur ROM developer to package these files (from original ROM) into a CWM flashable zip file (assuming u do not know how to do this)
3. Push this to ur phone using adb and install it on ur phone
Next time on, when installing any theme not made 'specifically' for ur ROM, refrain from doing so. In case you are in a mood to experiment, it would recommended to take a nandroid backup in case issues like this come up.
Since u say urs is stock, u could package these files from ur stock zip. For this u'd have to find a Roger's stock zip file, and u should be able to find an empty update.zip to package these files into (attaching template update.zip to this post; open in winrar).
Thank you very much for helping me with this diablo, I really got myself into a mess and I appreciate your help trying to get me out of it.
I'm not running any themes on top of Rogers 2.2, it's pure stock. I don't have CWM on my phone, nor have I used ADB before. Also, I'm not sure where or how I'd get the stock zip, I did download your template but I don't know how to fill it with what I need.
Thanks again,
Alex
Oh, and if you give me a donate button or paypal account, I'd be happy to show my gratitude.

I
Alex, try searching for Rogers stock ROM. U should be able to find it on these forums.
II
Meanwhile, try posting a thread to ask people here who may be on Rogers stock to zip up their /system/framework folder.
Asking for /system/app zip would not be a good idea since it would contain paid apps too. So alternately,
1. Open the theme zip that u put on ur phone
2. Navigate to /system/app folder
3. List down the apps u see there
4. Ask for anyone who's on stock rogers if they can zip up these files for u.
III
Next, considering u have the apps and the contents of /system/framework:
1. Open the file I sent u in 'winrar'
2. Navigate to system/app folder
3. Drop the apps u got from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
4. Navigate to system/framework folder
5. Drop the files in system/framework from 'whoever-helped-u' into this folder
6. Close winrar and rename to update.zip
IV
7. Put this file on ur SD card root
8. Boot into recovery
9. Select 'apply update.zip' (not sure of exact wording)
10. Reboot
Also, what is the theme u downloaded?
I put the steps in blocks so it would be easy to trouble shoot in case u run into any issues.
All the best Alex.
[Q] Phone won't get past boot screen, please help
Thank you again, Diablo, lunch is on me today.
I don't have any themes installed, this is the program that created the trouble for me, which I download from the Android Market:
http://www.androidblip.com/android-themes/anim-mod-root-136113.html
I clicked on the "fly in & flip" selection.
I will make a post requesting a stock rogers 2.2 zip of their /system/framework folder.
Is there anything else I'm missing, and once I get the /system/framework get it into the update.zip, how do I get it onto my SD card root, or do I just put it on the root of an external SD card?

I see its a paid app, so can't say whats in it. But since its into animations and stuff, most likely it messed up some files in ur framework folder. Send me the update.zip file after u update so I can cross check before u can flash it on ur phone.
Hi Diablo,
I wrote a new post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=997233
Am I asking for the right thing?
Also, on the app page it says "Anim Mod changes the system framework files without touching your theme so if you constantly switch from ROM to ROM you can always get the animation you prefer the best."
Does this make anything simpler?
Thanks again for continuing to help me,
Alex

Yes. It says it changes files. I would NOT recommend any such app that changes framework files with/without knowledge, unless, there is a way backup plan at hand to revert to stock.
I normally take a nandroid backup of my ROM before playing with things like this, so in case things mess up, atleast there is a working copy of ROM.
Secondly, since u said u need contacts, I would recommend the following:
1. Install titanium backup (TiBu in short)
2. Backup "Contacts Storage"
3. Copy this folder "Titanium Backup" from sdcard to a safe location (e.g., ur computer)
This would backup ur contacts. So in case u mess up with something, u can always copy this folder to ur sdcard and restore using TiBu.
U can also backup all user apps and data so u can restore all ur apps and data in these kinds of situations. But do NOT backup or try to restore any system data except the one contacts storage I mentioned above.
Also, be warned, contacts data cannot be moved this way between different versions of ROM like 2.1 and 2.2. But u can move between 2.2 and 2.2.1. I was also able to restore this data on 2.3.3 gingerbread.
Personally, I now use "Sprite Backup" to backup and restore my data.
Thanks for your effort yesterday Diablo. I decided to odin flash the stock rogers 2.1, repartition, and upgraded to 2.2 via kies. I lost my contacts, but couldn't go any longer without the phone. I'm gonna back everything up right now!

Sorry to hear that Alex. This time make sure u backup "Contacts Storage" in Tibu when u r on 2.2.
Else use Sprite Backup or anything similar to help backup.

i see some broken apps so i geuss something happended with the ext partition
my sd-ext map is empty and i have this ext.tar in my nandroid map
wtf happened!?
shiyou,
You are having too many problems from the beginning. I posted some tips on your first thread, but never heard back. Also, a member recommended doing more research before going forward. The N1 is different from other phones as far as flashing roms.
I would recommend you do this assuming you have a working rom or working backup and sdcard backup. Depending what you have or don't have the below order may vary. Maybe someone can help us there:
1. Take your sd card out of phone--believe you said you have a backup--format it with sdformatter: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter20.html
You can dl manual also--mainly select full erase on and size adj on as format options.
Put your backup back on sdcard while still outside phone. Put card back in phone and boot into Amon recovery. Go thru the partition steps to get 1gb ext3 and 0swap.
At this point you need to have a working rom to boot into. If not other steps may be needed.
I use Titanium Backup to manage apps, the paid version. After I flash a new rom, I open TB, or get it from Market if not part of rom. Then I restore all apps with data. NOT system data. Then I delete any old rom apps and do a refresh and then backup all apps and data.
At some point you need to get rid of Rom manager and Clockwork and flash a fresh Amon_Ra 2.2.1 from his site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829 Before flashing make sure the install recovery file from old revovery is deleted thru Root Explorer, see this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9414097#post9414097. You don't have to use adb, just Root Explorer. Change permission first to R/W.
You can push the 2.2.1 .img after, downloading to root of sdcard, with Terminal Emulator using these commands:
Open TE and type:
SU
at # type flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img then hit enter. I usually check md5's with a file explorer. The recovery-RA-passion-v2.2.1.img part above should be the exact name of the img file you downloaded.
2. Before flashing an update to a rom wipe dalvik cache and cache in recovery
3. If flashing a new rom wipe Phone's System with Temasek's System Wipe zip 3X by flashing from recovery. It should be in your download folder.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723844&page=1767
Then wipe Dalvik Cache and anything else that wasn't wiped with System Wipe zip 5X
4. You probably already know, but you can't restore a CWMod backup using Amon_RA or vice versa.
5. Read all the OP pages on the links I posted carefully
This is the way I been doing this for a long time--and rarely need any help or have problems. The system wipe is critical as old files can be left on phone even after a phone data wipe and flashing new rom.
Hope this helps and I haven't left anything out. Not a good typer. If I did--someone will correct me and some things are personal preference. But these have worked well for me.
BTW: If you have no good rom, you may want to dl the latest CM7 RC or nightly to pc and put it on sdcard after you format and put your sdcard backup from pc to phone. Then it is there to flash after card is ready and good recovery installed. You can always put the 2.2.1 on I mentioned after you get rest worked out. But, you gotta get off CWMod 3.0.
You should not use the beta Dark Tremor either, Would dl the the latest non beta.
Also, want the correct gapps for CM7 from OP page, and flashing order is rom/gapps/DT
Ken
I guess I was the member who recommended doing more research. So let me repeat:
I suggest leaving your phone alone and reading A LOT before you start doing something with it.
Yea, Sorry Jack

Nothing to be sorry for But indeed, I agreed with your point - someone who's looking for help rooting the phone and doing basic stuff for several days in a row, encountering a lot of problems, is most probably not ready for it, or not willing to read the guides.
You were right Jack on last thread. OP has now abandoned two threads he/she started and again asking for help on a CM7 thread.
No return to either with thanks and still looking for one magical answer, wondering why his phone don't work.
I gave enough advice for a dozen new users and over a year of flashing/backup expertise all in one post.
If he had done it right to begin with and followed some advice, he'd be running smooth. Card could be bad too, don't know.
I am done--
Ken
I love how you two are having this random conversation hahaha. Although I don't understand how the op did a nandroid backup and his phone wiped.. he mustve clicked wipe and confirmed it instead of nand backup. It's nearly impossible. I also decided (out of boredom) to look at his other thread.. Jack you said "Flash a new ROM, wipe your data, and try.
Repeat.
If the problems will still persist - they're in HW and you can't do anything about them." and what HE did: "i tried factory reset but didnt work..." lmfao you sir, are too nice jack! I'll give you two a thanks for the entertianment!
Well, rom development is slowing
Gotta do something
can't tell the same. 2 times i saved by nandroid due to bad flashing issue...
** Got Verizon Note 4 Dev Edition to work with Alliance T-Mobile ROM!! Data, calling, sms, mms work ! I smell a daily driver! I am not a developer, but this manual port taught me a lot. This was a personal project of trial and error, and research that turned into a stable ROM. Thought I'd share how I did it. I do not take credit for this ROM or kernel**
DISCLAIMER: Your warranty is now void. Please be careful make a nandroid of your current Verizon ROM. I am not responsible if you break your phone or lose data on your device! Read this whole OP!
**This is using the BETA version of Alliance ROM for T-Mobile Note 4. Download the Alliance BETA and read the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...-0-1-allianceromn910t-18-themes-huge-t3085560 to get an idea of the features of this ROM. Give lacoursiere18 and hsbadr a thanks and donate to them for making this great ROM and kernel.
Follow these steps one after the other and don't stop**
1. Make sure you are on a OAF Lollipop ROM without xposed installed. I think I used Rick's OAF Lollipop ROM originally. Download the most recent multisystem kernel. I am on BOG modem so I'm pretty sure any Lollipop modem will work with this.
2. On your Verizon Lollipop ROM make copies on your SD card of:
- system/buildprop.xml & cscversion.txt
- system/etc/apns-config.xml
- system/etc/permissions/verizon_net_sip_library.xml & vzwapnlib.xml
- system/lib/libril.so & libsec-ril.so
- system/apps/VzwActivationAgent, vzwapnpermission & **SecSetupWizard2013**
- system/framework/VZWAPNLib.apk
- system/privapp/VZWAPNService & secmms_candy folders
- system/csc folder
4. Reboot into recovery and make a TWRP backup of everything except SD card.
5. While in recovery dirty flash Alliance ROM BETA on top of your lollipop ROM OAF (Wipe everything EXCEPT data, internal storage, and SD). Then flash the most recent multisystem kernel.
6. Once booted up and apps are optimized wait until the screen turns off by itself. Download root browser and delete system/privapp/diagmonagent.apk and system/lib/libdiagmonagent.so because at startup it was sending some kind of diagnostics and thought it was messing with the data drop. Ever since these changes and a reboot data has been stable!
Reboot
7. Using root browser, swap those copied files in the appropriate file location. Change them to the correct permissions (the folders get 0755 and the files 0644, compare with other files and folders that are in place already. Make sure you change the permissions on all folders copied over and their contents. If a permission is incorrect or you leave a file out there can be issues and a restore might be needed.). Let apps optimize. **Longest Step**
Reboot
8. Edit feature.xml in the system/csc folder and add:
<CscFeature_RIL_ForceConnectMMS>true
</CscFeature_RIL_ForceConnectMMS>
Above the two bottom tags:
</FeatureSet>
</SamsungMobileFeature>
This enables auto download mms when data is toggled off !
Reboot
9. Perform a factory reset within the settings. Let phone relax for like 10 mins after it boots. Go through the setup wizard and then reboot.
Reboot into recovery
10. Make an backup in TWRP and you have your own custom ROM
I'm pretty sure this ROM is not compatible with xposed but it is very customizable, smooth, and it comes with a lot of features built in.
**READ ME**
Bugs:
- Silent mode is only available using the toggle. Volume down only goes to vibrate.
**
- Battery section in settings is missing
- No way to remove battery percentage in status bar
(Workaround: Download "Battery Usage Shortcut" from the Playstore to access the battery section and to remove battery percentage)
**
- No way to uninstall 3mint battery mod without messing the systemui up **(see update at the bottom)**
- Now that the mobile network settings are correct the advanced calling option is avaliable but it force closes and messes up your data connection. A reflash of everything will be needed so don't click on it! (I have a feeling a Verizon app is missing)
- My volume titles are not correct (Ringtone, media, notifications, and system.) when I press the volume buttons. (**Workaround download Noyze Volume Panel for free from the developer
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-noyze-volume-panel-replacement-t2875501
Give Tombarr a thanks for developing such a slick and customizable app**)
11/18/15:
- Just started using voicemail for the first time in 6 years. Good thing because today I experienced a glitch that it would not let me hang up the phone after listening to voicemails for some reason, but it didn't do that when I was clearing voicemails. (Hangs up automatically after a certain amount of time) Maybe it happens to new voicemails. Also I'm assuming since the verizon voice mail app isn't installed I get a weird unreadable verizon text when I get a new voicemail.
- One hand mode is not in the settings. Not sure why
Any suggestions or thoughts about these current bugs would be helpful.
I cannot guarantee all Alliance settings will work (stay away from performance), but most does work and it's awesome!
This manual port is now stable and buttery smooth! All basic phone functions work. Let me know if you come across any bugs or issues not related to Alliance settings. I will try to help fix it.
Thanks Stedrocklp for taking the time to try and get this working. Jal3223 thanks for sharing that key porting info!!! Wouldn't be possible without your help! Thanks hsbadr for developing Multisystem kernel ! Thanks lacoursiere18 for creating this ROM !
UPDATE:
To update Alliance settings to the most recent version and remove 3mintbattery mod download the newest T-Mobile Alliance ROM v1.1
1. Use ES File Explorer and click on the Alliance ROM you just downloaded to open the archive.
2.
- Extract system/privapp/SystemUI/SYSTEMUI.apk
- In the system/app folder extract AllianceControl folder (towards the top) and all the loose apps without folders at the bottom to a folder on your sd card.
3. Make a system and data backup in TWRP just in case things go wrong. Reboot system
4. Swap all those files and folders in their appropriate file locations and change the folder permissions to 755 and files to 644. Take this step slow and make sure the old files are renamed to .old or overwritten. If a permission is incorrect or you leave a file out there can be issues and a restore might be needed.
5. In system/app folder delete the old loose Alliancecontrol.apk, and delete 3mintbattery.apk
6. Reboot and enjoy!
This is the final release of this ROM so we are all up to date ! :good:

I'm pretty sure it would but you need to figure out the sprint specific apps to make the system happy. And flash your sprint kernel after you dirty flash. The dirty flash skips the setup which makes it possible to boot correctly.

Damn thats not good. I do not think I am allowed to share the ROM, as it's not mine. But I do not know how to share it anyways. I would just odin back to 4.4.4. and go through the upgrade process to OAF. Or you can try to de-xpose MoRom after a clean flash. I think there are two things you need to remove one being the xposed installer and the other I don't know the exact name but use root browser, search for xposed in the system folder, delete it, and reboot. No sure if it will messed anything up but I don't think it will. Then dirty flash the alliance beta and continue from there. Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for your response. I ODIN'd back to OAF and went through the steps in your tutorial. My phone booted up and I then proceeded to replace the files/folders and set permissions. I thought I was careful, but once I tried to reboot, the phone would not come back up.
Is there a way to make the changes (file permissions and replacing them in the ROM) on a PC?
Is there a way to share your edited files so that we could simply paste them into the ROM?
Just thought I would ask. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Damn thats a bummer. Even if I shared the files you would still need to change the permissions. I think it is possible unzip a verizon ROM and unzip Alliance rom and replace the files and then zip it back up on the computer and then dirty flash that but everytime I zip it back up it never flashes. It seems that when I zip it back up it adds an extra folder that makes it unflashable but haven't taken the time to figure out how to make it work. Try starting over and getting the ROM to boot then make a nandroid of that so you have something to restore. This is what I did when I was trying to get everything working. Next time try not adding the camera files and .jar file and add them after a reboot. Let me know how it goes.
Added the setup as one of the files to copy over so a factory reset can be performed to make sure you're starting with a fresh system. This is the first day I did this and I had to pull the battery twice due to freezes after I factory reset. I didn't let the phone sit and let it settle. I would recommend you let it sit and relax for like 10 mins. I have not had any lock ups since this morning. Lemmi know how it goes!
After the factory reset the ROM is flying. As for the battery I cannot say yet but I know I did not have the best battery life on this ROM before. It did get me through the day so I was happy about that. I calibrated the battery but that is about it. If any devs knows any battery optimizations that can be made to the system without xposed please share!
I heard from a user that Xposed works on this ROM. I personally do not use it though. As for battery life I've noticed better results after I disabled automatic check for updates in the settings. Settings > About device > Software Updates and uncheck auto check for updates. This ROM for some reason does not have the audio issues that I experienced on MoROMs ROM. I am happy about that. Now that we finally have the 5.1.1. update I am going to try and port a ROM that looks good. If anybody wants to give this a stab with me that would be great to test multiple ROMs from different carriers and see which one gives us the best results. Thanks
Got something amazing in the works!

I don't recommend dirty flashing from Kyubi. You should try clean flashing MoRom then copying those files from the system. Then dirty flash Alliance, then multisystem kernel:

And just follow the OP instructions.

Yeah ,I am trying to pull the files I need from my stock ROM backup that I just freshly installed on my device. I stumbled upon a forum here today called Guides There seems to be ALOT of usefull stuff in here about Porting and Building ROM's. I don't know if you have ever come across it or not.
