[Q] Samsung ATIV S Camera Has Stopped Working - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Looking for help with the problem detailed below before I have to take the plunge and nuke the phone (factory reset).
Problem: Camera crashes on my ATIV S Windows Phone 8
Occurs: After I start the camera app
Action Taken: Tapping the screen OR pressing the hardware camera button
Expected Result: Take a picture
What Actually Happens: Camera app closes instead and phone goes back to the start screen
This happens regardless of which camera app I am using (native or 3rd party). I have tried restarting the phone, removing the battery and uninstalling 3rd party apps but the problem is still there. Any suggestions appreciated.

Did a bit more searching and found the solution (on WPCentral). SD card was the culprit. SanDisk 64GB. Popped it in PC, scanned and fixed errors (it reported none). Put it back in and camera is working as it should...

You were able to expand your memory to 64bitsd card?

@noelito: If you mean 64Gb (not 64bit) then answer is I have used the 64GB SD card since I got the phone in January (bought together from Amazon). I didn't do anything to make it work. It just worked.

i say this because
I thought Samsung did not guarantee any other card past 32gb to work, so if you got your 64gb to work I am considering purchasing a large side micro sd

I bought a 64gb microsd for my tablet and had the idea to try it in the phone and it worked flawlessly for me too!

No SD card, same problem ...

put a 32gb sdhc class 10 in my hd7

I have done it! took me a while but I brought it. its a PNY 32gb and of course I had to hard reset the phone so it can partition it correctly but i didn't mind. the speed is great.
I only had one issue, don't do a battery pull for any reason. I did one for a sim card swap and it damaged the way it interacts with the phone took multiple hard resets to get the card to become recognized again.
I believe our devices since its so hard to swap or upgrade memory we should have been had it. I am thankful that its easy on the Hd7. the class 4 16gb card was fine I thought until i put the 32gb class ten in, apps lauch faster and everything seems to have a pep to it. even downloading things.
I did the same a few months ago everything is working perfect

Thats cool, I know at the beginning of the thread, someone said it may draw too much power and not work, but since you are having no issues, I may be trying this!
All I can say is: don't do it! This card is f**king slow. Sure, if you have passed the acces time everything is working. But the access time feels like half a second!
I have discovered following issues while using a PNY 32 GB Class 10 mircoSD card:
Camera App crash while saving picture
Video capture stuttering in the first second, regardless of quality
Surpreme Shortcuts crash while opening tile on start screen
Everything is loading like there's a Class 4 card in the phone because of high access time
Internet Sharing bug: can't turn off sharing, because phone disconnects from internet but app won't recognize it and thinks it is still connected
Reboot phone 3 times a day because apps that crash on launch won't start again in the same session
i have no problem using this Sandisk 32gb from www.expansys.com
just put on the search box this reference > 219397 the card apears , maybe theres a expansys store in your country
all the best
32GB Samsung Class 10 works well !
Hi,
I've been using a Sandisk 32GB Class 4 in my HD7 for almost one year (not so fast card, top 1.5MB/s in WP Bench), and during last December I was getting reboots and reboots...
So I decided to give a try to another Sandisk microSD card, bug 16GB, still Class 4.
It didn't work at all (even though I formated it with Windows, FAT32). The phone would recognize it once every 5 reboots...
So I put back the 32GB one, formatted with the Phone (vol+ + vol- + power), then it worked, and I could even restore my last backup (as it was the same microSD card).
But 3 days ago, I got some reboots when receiving SMS, I was so fed up that I bought a Samsung 32GB Class 10, after seeing this thread, to give a try.
So I formatted it with SDFormatter, put it in my HD7 last night, and it works really well !!
I did some benchs on my PC with Atto before putting it in my phone, it was running at 10-15MB/s, reading and writing, for 128 or 256KB blocks and more (didn't took a screenshot sorry).
And now in WP Bench the card speed is pretty stable and is running at 8 to 10MB/s, this time, I took a screenshot :

So here it is, Samsung 32GB Class 10 works really well, apps load fast, apps install fast, here are some references :
- where I bought it (France) : PC-Look.com (ref: MB-MSBGA/EU)
- where I saw it first : Amazon.fr (MB-MSBGA/EU)
- one that seems to be the same on Amazon.com (MB-MSBGA/US)
does the PNY reall y work well?
its running under which bootlaoder, i heard bootloader needs to recognise the card first.
class 2 can work fine. I have tried 32gb sandisk class 2 and had no problems at all, and the same speed as the stock card.
Thank you for this, i'm using now the same card as you and it works great
something good.

regardless of what people say the hd7 was a very classy device. and the 32gb option and upgrade option. unlike its other wp7 brothers made it better. I just brought a second one since my screen cracked. just took my 32gb chip with me lol.
I welcome you all to the world of 32g's. I also swapped a digitizer, and mother board alot of trial and error. let me know if you have questions.

Non- compliant internal storage cards

Hello guys! This is my first post after visiting xda developers everyday for the past two weeks so bare with me...
I recently purchased an HTC HD7 from ebay at a very good price. I thought all was well with the free shipping and all...until the phone started restarting after the first day. So I panicked, searched on google and up pops up xda developers forum! It offered alot of solutions to many problems regarding resetting and restarting.
However after extensive research for the past two weeks, I finally recognized that the problem was the 'internal' SD card. The sellers from HK from whom i bought the phone had voided HTC warranty to insert one of their low class, cheap SDHC cards (which explains the reduction in cost) causing it to fail drastically as a phone. I know this happened because of a shiny warranty sticker with a bunch of chinese symbols on it. Updates won't work, factory reset happens on it's own, restarting even when i simply open up the messaging app and of course the infamous "storage card not working" error.
I've decided I cannot and do not want to send back my phone back in exchange for a new one since i will encounter the same problems. I've decided to have them compensate me for any repairs I have to make. So I read an article on xda dev about upgrading memory to 32GB using SanDisk Class 2 SDHC. Problem is, it is quite out of reach in my country so I would like to know a full list of compatible SDHC cards (not necessarily 32 gb). Also, what other hardware problems might be causing the occurances mentioned? I doubt it's a software problem, but say it is, what might be causing it?
Thank you!

I think your probably right, more than likely it is due to the cheap SD card!
The good thing is that almost all the newer manufactured SDHC cards will work in the HD7, class 2, through 10.
I would recommend at least the 8gb or the 16gb for storage capacity and a class 4 for read/write speeds.
Stay with a better brand like SanDisk or PNY.
Purchace it from someone that has a decent return policy, just incase you get a dud.
Run the CrystalDiskMark 4000mb test on it and post your results in the "upgrade your HTC HD7 memory to 32gb" thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883582
and they will be able to tell you if its a sufficient SD card for the HD7.
Thank you

Where can I hit the thank you button? I cannot find it :S Also the phone is deteriorating day by day....Now it is out of battery and when i charge it, it goes into a loop of the HTC splash screen and a windows loading screen. It then freezes and repeats. Is there anything else that might be contributing to this? thanks!

It's definitely possible and I wouldn't rule out a software issue, but I think the signs are pointing to a non- compliant SD card
The devices OS is reliant on the SD card to store user data and cache, contacts, SMS, emails and apps, without an SD card inserted or having a faulty SD card would cause these operations to crash and cause system errors when powering on the device, this in turn prevents it from operating and the system from loading and cause file system performance issues, device lockup, reset or boot loop.
Are you sure that they even put an SD card in your device? They or the original owner may have removed the SD card and not installed another one. Either way, I would start with putting a new SD card in your device and go from there!

Yes I am sure they put in an SD card because i removed the back panel and it is clearly visible. One thing I find annoying is that they removed the protective metallic paper used to protect and hold the SDHC in place. Is there a way to use an alternative to this protective paper? I have also noticed the phone does have some on board memory ( 11MB) to be able to run. However there is no place for anything, messages, contacts, even for running applications such as IE! I'm guessing it is some kind of emergency memory? Anyways, my worry is that i feel that metallic strip is somewhat important so I would like to know how to replace it? Your help is very much appreciated!!!

Glad I can be of help!
It sounds like it's not recognizing the SD card. Can you get the phone running and goto settings, about phone and check to see what it says for storage capacity. It should show, total storage and available storage.
As far as the metalic tape... I know that it's there to help prevent the SD card from coming out of the tray. Because WP7 Mango security locks the card to prevent any data from being removed from the card. So say you removed the card without unlocking it first, there is no way to extract the data from the card or format it with another device. If the HD7 is turned on without the SD card installed the card will no longer work in the device either.
Not a 100% sure if the tape serves any other purpose though. You could cut a piece of duct tape to fit and secure it in place use the good kind like gorilla duct tape.

I have successfully inserted a 32Gb SanDisk SDHC Class 4 in my phone just a few hours ago. I performed a hard reset as instructed. When I booted up, the HTC splash screen showed up and it froze. For roughly 5 minutes...I plucked out the battery and again performed a hard reset. This time the device loaded with an error saying: low storage space please free up some space from your device. I tapped 'ok' and all I had was a black screen, although i know the OS booted up because i could hear system sounds, the bottom buttons were responsive and the lcok screen was visible. However when I slide up, no icons are visible except the wifi icon, the battery icon and the sim icon.
I tried loading the bootloader and as far as storage goes it is only recognizing some sort of 64MB partition from an "sd sandisk". Could this be a faulty installation of the OS on the new card? was I supposed to allow the system to take its time to load the software onto the new SD card? I am also unable to obtain the bootloader version etc that would be required to flash an RUU. Help would be appreciated!

That's strange... The HD7 has an internal (primary) seperate memory for the OS, the SD card is a secondary memory for the device. Technically it's a non removable storage. So once inserted, you hard reset the device and the SD card is formatted and then it becomes a part of the device and it's integrated into the file system.
If you boot into bootloader mode (device off, hold down the volume down button and power the device back on, while continuing to hold down the volume down button) what's all the information on the bootloader screen? I'm wondering if it's bricked. Can you also get into USB host mode? Device off, hold down the volume down button and the camera button and then power back on.

The device was not bricked. I inserted another SDHC card I had used for an old MP4. It was an 8GB TEAM SDHC class 2. The device booted up the OS on this card after a formatting and everything worked better than previously. However some restats were still happening. I tried loading the bootloader in an attempt to flash a custom ROM for the device but no USB text was seen on screen although Zune was recognizing the device perfectly. I decided to leave the device as is. Yesterday, I migrated to my grandma's for a week and I have a room where reception is great always full and no interruptions. A curious fact was that the phone did not restart once no matter how much I used it... and I did use it extensively downloading apps for the first 3 hours, constantly chatting on facebook, emails HTC hub and also voice recognition for messaging and searches. It was working 100% great. When I descended down the stairs (my room is on the first floor) and went to the kitchen I recieved a call from my girlfriend. I picked it up and reception was pretty bad, so I told her to message me instead. As I cut I realized the reception bar was zero. After a couple of minutes, the phone restarted for the first time since my stay at grandma's. I came to the inevitable conclusion that the mobile restarts everytime the reception is bad. This conclusion was backed up by working fine in my room and restarting every time I went to a low reception room. It hit me then that my house does have pretty bad reception where I reside most of the times which causes all those restarts. I am almost sure this is the cause of the restarting. However I am not sure what it infers... Regardless I am sending the phone back in exchange for a new one. However I do wish to know if anyone encountered the same problem, what they did to tackle it (besides running around like a madman to find reception), what causes this and if it is a model defect or a rare case. Thank you for your help!

Yeah... If you can exchange it for another one I would!
If in bootloader mode the white section will display "serial" while not plugged in and "USB" while plugged in, if neither of these are present then the device is half/small bricked for sure, even if it's recognized by Zune. That can be fixed with the goldcard/ Y cable method too.
I have heard of some people having issues with restarts when on their network and while roaming outside of their network. One thing you can try is flashing different radio versions until you find one that gives the best signal. Another thing could be the OS build version and firmware version that your device is running on, it may need to be updated.

While I wish to thank you for your constant support and very useful suggestions on the matter, xdrc45, I am going to send the phone back very soon. Chances are I will recieve a replacement in two weeks time. Aside from this, I am sure the seller at HK will send me a phone with similar issues (Cross-fingers he won't), But since I am able to handle some very basic technical issues such as these, and the phone is at a good price (160EUR) I do not wish to refund. I'd much rather tinker with it a little here and there to customize it to my liking, ensure maximum potential of the phone and prevent issues. So my question is this: What steps should I take the minute the phone arrives (assuming they send me an identical copy of the phone they provided)? Do I need to supply myself with any hardware or software to be able to install the phone to function as though I bought it officially from HTC?
In reply to your suggestion on the bootloader: yes, the white section was always empty no matter what...so I'm guessing the phone was slowly dying away anyways. I will definately look further into the goldcard/ y cable.
Thanks!

I think that's a good choice and hopefully the next one won't have the same problems for you!
The best thing to do when you get the new one is boot into bootloader mode and check the information, if you want post back all the info from the BL screen or provide a screen shot of it. Also go into settings, about phone, more info and post back all the information from there too. That way we can make sure everything is up to par on the device and functioning like it should and make sure it's not bricked and if it is we'll get it taken care of for you!

That's a great price... providing it's a genuine capacity. Even on Amazon there are some rogue traders selling fake cards. Make sure you use a capacity checking tool.

I have the same. Only annoyance is whenever I switch the camera on it asks me if I want to use the SD card when I selected that in the settings.

This happens with my 32Gb card too. Do you think it's down to the card or is this a 'feature' of the camera? Annoying all the same.

It's less consistent now, maybe every 4th or 5th time I switch the camera on.
SGC can read the card in ExtFAT file system or does we have to format it to FAT32?

it only asks on a cold boot.
if fast boot is enabled it doesn't shut down completely until 24 hours after you last used the camera, or until you charge it.
fast-booting skips the boot logo and animation, and it keeps the memory card mounted while the device is off.
in a cold boot the memory card needs to be mounted, and this usually happens shortly after the starting application(usually the launcher, but it's the camera app on the sgc) is launched.
because the camera is launched before the memory card is available it defaults to internal storage, and then asks if you want to switch once it detects the insertion(mounting) of the memory card.

I understood that this was the reason for the SD Card prompt but I believe the better solution would be an option in settings to always accept the external SD card as the default storage once mounted.
It doesn't seem to be an issue in any smartphone I ever owned which essentially goes through the same mount process on a cold boot.
how often do you start the camera app before android even got the chance to mount the memory card though?
no other android device launches the camera app this quickly after(or rather, during) startup.
It's Boxing Day Sale on Amazon and I just ordered the Sandisk 64GB Micro SD card for CAD$48.00 with free shipping!
Cheers

Same happens to me too. Gets worst when you have a Security password associated to the device. By the time you enter the 4digit code the option to select the card goes and the camera reset back to using the internal memory. annoying to say the least.
hi, has anyone who is using a 64gb class 10 card notice any speed different of the device?

[Q] Camera shutter lag with microSD

I'm having this weird problem with the first photo I take with my Lumia 620 takes around 2/4 seconds to be saved if I'm using an microSD card. I've seen in other forums that this happens to any Lumia phone and even HTC ones with micorSD so it's a WP8 problem rather than a specific model of phone or card. I'm using a 16Gb Sandisk Ultra Class 10 UHS-1
Let me explain step by step:
1. Pick up the phone after a couple of minutes of inactivity, it seems like the microSD times out because this problem doesn't happen if you lock and unlock the phone straight away.
2. Open the camera app, focus the photo, and press the shutter button.
3. The phone won't take the photo, it will continue to act like nothing was pressed for another 3 to 4 seconds.
4. The photo is finally taken, in whatever position the phone is now, so the photo is not stored in any buffer or anything like that.
5. Any photo after that is instantaneous.
This problem happens as long as you have the microSD on the phone. Even if you set the phone to save the images in the internal memory, the first photo will continue to lag. Remove the SD card and everything is fine again.
What I've found out is that formatting the microSD as exFAT with 64kb clusters helps with this problem, however it doesn't disappear, it's only reduced.
I know there's other people with this problem, my question is, has anyone found out a way to fix this (other that removing the microSD card)?
P.S.: Yes, I've formatted the card, reset the camera, restored the phone to factory settings and tested with an empty card.

I have exactrly the same problem with my Nokia Lumia 620 Still hoping to get a solituion...
my Lumia had big problems with exFat, including the lag when taking pictures (even worse with videos). Converting it to fat32 and then reformatting it with the phone fixed it for me.
Same problem here... Thanks for the tip about exFat.
A related question: how does the music player fares for you with songs on microSD?
Because mine behaves very badly, with lots of duplicate songs. Do you think the two problems can be related?

I don't know, this problems seems to come in randomly. After formatting the card, it's gone for a time.. I've tried only using ONE tool to put music on it (in my case, the explorer) and it seems to work. Other people at wpcentral have reported this also, the phone seems to have a problem with music synced from more than one program. It was the same for me, I dropped the music in via Explorer and then added an album via Windos media player, and I directly got multiple duplicates..

[Problem] Nokia Lumia 625 gets "hang" and after restart it stucks at NOKIA logo

[Problem] Nokia Lumia 625 gets "hang" and after restart it stucks at NOKIA logo
Hi
I have purchased first Lumia device 4 days ago; Lumia 625
After 2 days of usage it gets itself hang anytime and then restarts itself.
During restart is gets itself stuck at nokia logo.
Once it got start at that time i have done hard reset, it worked fine after that for 5 hours and now same problem started.
I am trying to flash stock rom now from this forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515453&page=2
Should i do this or take it to nokia care?
I have purchased it in INDIA from online seller
625 has a SD Card slot isn't it? If so, have you tried removing the SD card if you have it there?
Hello,
Try press both volume down and power bottoms together for 10 seconds or more,
phone should restart normally

Nice to hear it helped but I am [email protected] frustrated by these SD card issues. My Sammy ATIV S screwed after I replaced a Transcend 32 Gbyte card with a 64Gbyte one from Sandisk. Now that my phone can't read barely anything no matter whether I have my old Transcend inserted or don't have any SD card at all. My system apps like Photos don't start, camera app does take photos by crashes after I take a shot, Photos app doesn't show any newly taken photos.
I would tell you, go replace your broken SD card but I can't because I've used Transcend for nearly half a year and it worked like a charm until I replaced it with Sandisk. Obviously, the issue isn't only with the hardware.
BTW, what SD card do you use?

Thanks. Well, seems like SanDisk did their job dreadfully bad and screwed smth. it their controller's firmware. I've had problems with my SanDisk getting dismounted from phone every few seconds, when Transcend worked just fine.
That's good info for us WP owners to stay clear from SanDisc.
