I see my device connected to my home wireless, but it says only 54Mbs. Wondering how I can tell if it's connected via b, g, or n. If it's n shouldn't it be up to 150Mbs? I get really good range, like a few houses away on my phone, so I assume it's got to be connected via n, but want to figure how I can tell on ym network and others I connect to.
TIA
Have you looked in the routers menu to see the connected clients and speed/type yet?
Also in SGS tools goto secret codes then usage stats and device info then wifi info

Have you ran speedtest while connected to wifi?
Also, if your router doesn't have automatic channel switching, you will have to choose. That should tell you how its connected.
I ran speedtests and used wifi analyzer and checked in my wifi settings. I see what channel I'm using and which are available, but nothing says connected 802.11b or 802.11g or 802.11n.
The further away from the AP you are, the lower your negotiated speeds will be. You can be right on top of an N router, but with the Broadcom WiFi chipset in the Galaxy S, you can only have a 72Mbps connection.
Lower throughput with further distances comes from error corrective algorithms. Lower throughput carries less errors at long distances.
remember our phones dont have dual band.
your router has to be setup to either be dual N band or on Single band,
but our phone will only pickup single n
and also as said above distance and signal strength can very.
as for running speed test... wont tell you much about your network connection unless your internet is faster than your router, and in north america thats hard to find...
Yeah I maxed at 72Mbps right on top of my router. I was just trying to find a way to tell if it's connected via b, g, or n.
If you are getting over 11Mbps then you are not B, so you can either be G/N with poor signal. Over 54 you are not G which means you are N.
Dual band only matters for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz freq. ranges and being able to operate on them.

Absolutely correct..anything over 54 would be N but rate will degrade with distance and signal so it may be hard to tell what the initial connection was. Get close to the AP and see if you're over 54. Router/AP status may also tell you

That means nothing. Your internet is considerably slower than your router can handle. Speedtest ONLY measures your internet speed. The speed between your device and the router does not come into play unless you are connecting at less than your internet speed. Also, if you have a standard N router that is not dual band and you have something G on it, everything will connect at G speed.

But my internet speed is greater than than the high end of g speed. How could I clock so near my isp speed when that speed exceeds the g rated speed?

You need to learn the difference between BITS and BYTES

I thought i knew the difference, but I think I got the big b and little mixed up again.
Ok, g speed maxes at 54 Megabytes or bits?
My internet is dsl, do its most likely 6 M bits or bytes?
And phone is bits or bytes?
My router is a dual band N speed, but its not set on the 5.4 setting and it doesn't auto change. It is MIMO, if that matters.
Thanks for straightening this out. Maybe I won't be the only guy that learns something from reading this.

wireless g speed is 54 MEGABITS per second which, without ANY overhead (impossible) you can see speeds of 7 MEGABYTES per second.
your dsl connection is 99.999999999% positively MEGABITS per second, so you could, without any overhead (again almost impossible), possibly see speeds of 750 KILOBYTES per second of actual bandwidth transfer.
there are 8 bits to every byte

No. Its 8 bits for every byte. Its mathematically impossible to score MORE bandwidth than is actually available.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
To reiterate, 6 megaBITS per second equates to theoretical 750 kiloBYTES
There is not currently a DSL on the market right now that can do 6 megaBYTES per second.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
Throughput is almost always measured in bits while size is always in bytes. Exceptions being download managers which usually (or as an option) display bytes since bytes (kilo or mega) are considered human readable.
For wireless modes (abgn) and freqs (2.4/5) most modern routers can do simultaneous modes and their supported speeds while only highend ones do simultaneous freqs. An exception being devices that support mode A since it is 5GHz 11Mbps.
Also for the OP.
Somewhere in that router it will tell you the mode you are connected at. My Linksys E3000 shows it in the dhcp client table. Others will show it in the connected wireless devices menu (i had a netgear once that displayed there)
Oh, another thing with some routers. Even though they support mixed mode, if you have a client connected at a reduced speed rate the router may reduce everyone to that rate.... but that is going to be for older devices.

My house has terrible reception in general (T-Mobile!), but I've never had a phone drain THIS quickly due to searching for signal.
I've set it to 2G only (I only get EDGE at my house anyway, THANKS OBAMA) and it seems to be helping.
Is the Nexus 5 or Kit Kat in general aggressive with searching for 3G/4G signal in anyone else's experience?
Like I said, other phones haven't had this issue.

I have terrible signal too and standby time is horrible. I'll try using faux kernel and report back.
I have same setup as you except my network settings are set to LTE even though there is no lte in my area. Not saying i have great battery life, but it isnt 49% looking for signal.

I have this SAME problem, and the signal on my phone is terrible compared to my last LTE phone.
same problem at work...... I dont know how 1 place can go from lte to 4g to edge all with in a small building with 1 floor. First day while being at school i got 3 hours screentime on lte, today at work i got like 1.5 hours.
27% over 12 hours with one bar seems just fine to me..

Mine reacts different with st att. I get 1 bar of lte in my home when I force lte. If I do auto switch gsm/lte it opts to 3 to 4 bars of hspa, which of course I prefer at home on Wi-Fi.
I've used tmobile for most of my smart phone life and always used tasker to switch to edge when connected to Wi-Fi. Saved a lot of battery. So your experience has been what I normally get.

I have T-mobile as well and my house is in a bad spot. I found that with my note 2 I could use the dialer debug codes to manually set the phone to what ever freq and service I wanted. I found this to greatly help my battery as the modems for T-mo are particularly bad at determining the correct type of service to use and needlessly killing battery.

At least I'm not alone. It's just annoying to have to switch to 2G only when I go home. -.-

Are you guys using wifi while at home? If not then you really should. It generally makes the data modem go into a lower power state if wifi is connected saving battery. Thats how it is on my VZW galaxy nexus.

I have full data bars in my area. If I turn WiFi off and just use data the battery drains significantly faster.
I am new to T-Mobile, I was with Verizon and my house on Verizon barely gets LTE. My galaxy nexus never got LTE but with T-Mobile my Nexus 5 has 3-4 bars of LTE. So I've been using LTE lately and my battery life has been great. I get 5 + hours screen on time with LTE.
Of course Verizon says my area has great 4g service too but anybody who has came to my house either gets 1 bar of LTE or 3g on Verizon. Trying to acquire a signal will of course eat battery though but I will tell you what I am very happy with T-Mobile so far, a lot better then I expected.
I am happy with the battery life and signal strength where I live and travel to.

Like I said, manually switching to 2G-only when you're in the affected area removes the problem, but you'll need to switch it back to LTE when you go anywhere with a better connection time. Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode.
If you're worried about battery life. There's a few things you can do. I found that turning off my "Ok Google" hot word detection increased battery life immensely. Also try turning off Google Now sometimes. I realize that the highlight of this phone more or less was Google Now, but if you don't need it for a certain period of time, turn it off. Doesn't hurt to try.
Try out Faux kernel also. On his test 7 (I think he just put out test 8) I was on track to get 60 hours of standby time. I'll try and dig up the screenshot..hopefully I didn't loose it one of my many wipes..

+1. It looks like my N5 gets 5-8 dBm worse signal than my N4.
I reformatted all the differences I see into a weighted Excel Spread Sheet.
Everyone will have their own weights.
So I attached the spread sheet for anyone to play with.
You can see why it's hard deciding between these two phones.
This is not putting down either phone. Just helping folks decide what's best for them. I own both phones.
Here is a crude view of the spread sheet.
Note: I have a Weight then a score for each phone, then I calculate a weighted value for each and then add it all up.

This is interesting. I uploaded all 4 pics to flickr.
I tried to attach all 4 at 1024 resolution.
At 1024 the M8 photo was rejected on size.
I know why. Because it contains way more dynamic range so M8 photo
didn't jpeg compress as much as the S5.

Thanks for clarifying. The S5 pictures look more "smokey" compared to the M8 ones. I had a S3 but it sometimes had the same problem and I could never figure out why.
I've seen comparisons on websites, its kind of a draw, some pics the M8 did better, others the S5 did better. I'm happy with the M8 though its almost as good as my Olympus Tough camera.
I bought my own S5 and updated opening post.
So this is coming from someone that has owned a M8 since release day.
Sorry for the ugly formatting. No time to make it pretty.
I tried to hit on topics I never see in reviews.
So just one thing... little thing... with taking pictures with an S5.
Having realtime HDR enabled will result (most times) in better images because you won't lose shadow or highlight detail as readily.
Also, zooming is utterly futile on any phone. All you're doing is cropping. Take the photo un-zoomed and then just crop it down later if you want to frame it differently. If you find you'e doing this a lot, enable weighted metering (it'll do the metering wherever you tap to focus) and this way the cropped image will be properly exposed in the area you want it to be.
The digital zoom on smartphones is nothing more than a low-res telescope for you to look at things closer. Using it taking pictures doesn't do anything.
This is going to change soon, we will start to see smartphones with optical zoom. Samsung has a camera out there with android and I believe it even has cell radios so you could use it as a phone... and it has a full telescoping zoom on it.
I reformatted the differences into a weighted spread sheet. Checkout the new opening post.
You can also download the spread sheet
So I finally picked up an M8, and my wife got the S5. The antenna signals are on par with one another. The M8 actually seems to grab LTE signal a little better than the S5. I haven't tested the camera or the batteries as of yet.
If there is one thing that I can say is that the new TouchWiz launcher is even slower than her S3 phone. The phone itself is fast and snappy, but the launcher lag is just terrible.

I don't notice any lag what so ever.
But I am running a very debloated ROM
It could also be the animation you don't like.
That's the thing. I see no lag while navigating the phone. The launcher is the only place I see the lag, and missing frames. The launcher was poorly done this time around, in my opinion.

Been having the same debate for the last 14 days. Today is day 14 and I HAVE to decide. I also think the GS5 is super snappy, and the launcher thing doesn't bother me, because I always default to NOVA anyway. I will say it worries me that the development scene is moving much slower than with the S3, but really, there is so much to like about this phone, that I'm not sure it's a deal breaker.
I really hope some stuff comes through, and I can use things like xposed and other mods, but even if I can't this phone is pretty BA.
The only reason I'll still root is that derned wifi hotspot. I do also hope that the oft speculated gs5 prime doesn't come out in like 2 weeks and make me regret this....

Trying to find a black wireless charging back for it now.
I still prefer HTC Browser over any browser. Dolphin and Opera are close (but have other little glitchy annoyances). Samsung Browser is really not good for viewing some sites.
This link explains the problem.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...-webviews-in-kitkat-probably-not-coming-back/
Basically Google removed Text Reflow from Android as of KitKat. This effected many browsers which used what is call "WebView" API.
Some companies re-implemented Text Reflow, Some had their own version to begin with and others just let it disappear with release of KitKat.
Samsung let it disappear. HTC re-implemented it or always had their own version.
Only 3 browsers I have tried have it, HTC, Dolphin and Opera. AOSP, Chrome, Firefox, Samsung do not have Text Reflow any longer.
It's painful reading some sites without Text Reflow. XDA being one them (and the article I sighted above used XDA as example of the problem).
I have been working on getting one myself. Every phone will have ups and downs, right now I'm pissed because I have an m8 that cannot be s-offed. I talked to htc today about some of the issues the you, others, and I have had and got the typical 'blame the other guy' conversation. I was initially asking about an official RUU, the tech told me that only AT&T has asked for and allowed them to post one. I have never had issues with Sprint until this phone and they are on my last nerve. But I digress, lol.

I was thinking of asking HTC the same thing about a Stock RUU. I doubt it would fix it though. The Harmon RUU would not fix mine and it ran fine on the 2nd M8.
You can't blame HTC on the S-OFF thing (except for the first one breaking) . That's just a matter of luck. I was worried if I wanted to go back to the M8 that my replaced unit (still sealed in box) might not get S-OFF either. But that looks like it won't be an issue because I plan to sell it sealed.
I'll see eventually over on the other side I assume.
I would not rule out HTC on the next phone.
Actually, we can blame htc for the s-off thing. If they wouldn't turn it on in the first place we wouldn't have to worry about it, lol.
I purchased both the M8 and the S5 (had Nexus 5 which I just sold off). Kept both for a few weeks, but in the end, stuck with the S5. Yes, it's not as 'nice looking', but it won out in too many other categories for me to keep the M8. The M8 always felt out of proportion? (not wide enough for height/weight). It was also very slippery without a case on it. S5 feels so much better in the hand (I am female, but do not have 'tiny' hands)
I have all animations turned off and see no significant lag on the S5. Another thing, having took numerous photo's with both devices, in the end, the S5 has the better camera.
Any time I run a speed test being either on WiFi or LTE the speed test will shoot to the speeds it should get for less than a second. Than the speed will drop and drop and drop. With my 2 year old htc one testing lte network I average between 40 to 50 mbps. The fastest the edge hit was 30 once averaging around 20. And my network speeds at home are 58/28. On ipad, iPhone, tablet, and htc one all achieve such no problem. The edge hasn't made it past 26 and averages 15-20. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? Could it be a problem with the phone itself? Thanks.
Any tried some speed tests on this device via tmobile lte?
Results are comical. Wonder if it's the pos os or hware.
Here we go:
Where I live (would be a testing ground for LTE-U since the closest tower are 10 miles west or east): 8-13 down.
Where I work (too much interference, too many cell phones and more Verizon-friendly b/c the school I work for uses their gear): 6-10 down.
Where I used to live: 73 down, 38 up.
North Side-Wrigleyville area: 40 down, 17 up.
Chinatown: 60 down, 33 up.

As an example my ZTE Zmax pro and Samsung S7 on same network in same room area are ten to 15 times faster in the Speed Test by Ookla via LTE.

It might be antenna placement or just your device. I'd achieve similar results if I took out my sim and placed it inside my spare Moto E 2015.

This is a spare line(sim)with voice and data I have that I use in devices, so I guess no other device has issues with sim except this one LOL :good:
