[Q] Captivate want Boot - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Captivate want boot it is stuck on the AT&T logo screen, I am able to get in Download mode, but I can't get my computer to recognized the phone. I will say I did accidently formatted the boot file folder, so I know why it want boot, however if I could get the PC to see the phone I could flash back to stock at best. I do have the drivers loaded on my computer but still does not work. Is there any hope for my captivate? I have tried some of the things suggested here, but nothing works. USB device NOT recognized is all I get. PLEASE HELP.

Try a windows 7 PC which gets all the drivers. If your using windows xp i don't think it'll work I had trouble using Odin on xp .

I have used Odin on xp without any problems. If on XP, he needs to use the correct drivers, available from Samsung Web site, and may need to uninstall his existing drivers first.

I am running windows 7, I have also try to uninstall the drivers I have(got them from Samsung web site) and I still get the error. I have use these drivers before, I also used another windows 7 computer, and got the same error. Is there any other reason my computer can't see my captivate? I even connected other phone to it and had no problems, it's just the Captivate I think.

Did you try everything in this thread?

yes I have tried it all to the best of my understanding.

If your getting a device not recognized message in windows you probably have a bad connection (cable or micro usb port) If there was a driver problem it would give a different message about being unable to install drivers for device...Since you tried another pc, you can rule out drivers, OS, and pc usb port, so I would try a different cable and/or clean the port....Deleting/formatting the boot partition shouldn't effect anything to do with the pc recognizing the cappy in download mode.

If your windows 7 PC is internet connected it'll find the drivers all by itself.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app

"Device not recognized" is not a driver issue. It means the cappy's data pins in the USB port might be f#@%ed. I have a cappy with that issue, and no matter what it will not connect to a PC. Meanwhile, my daily cappy had 0 problems finding the driver once plugged in.
Take a look at the port, see if any pins are bent or if it needs cleaning.

Phone not recognized by ODIN

I am sorry to jump in but I am currently running the latest nightly and Ineed to flash bootloaders and start with Froyo again. But my computer is not detecting my phone. I have installed the Android SDK and installed the drivers for Nexus S but of no avail. i am stuck and would appreciate your help.
The funny thing is that I can use the phone as USB device but freaking ODIN is not detecting it. My windows does not has any unrecognised device. I have installed the Nexus S drivers as well. Is it a problem with ODIN or my phone or windows itself? I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit edition.
I have tried;
Uninstalled Samsung Drivers / Restarted / Reinstalled
Swapped 2 different cords
Tried every available port on my PC
Restarted, pulled PC power cable, let it rest for a few seconds and plugged it back in
Uninstalled every USB Root Hub device and restarted so Windows could reinstall all of it
Tried Heimdall as well
I need my ODIN flashing back
Thanks in advance!
Look that Kies isnĀ“t running in the Background.
It is not - I can confirm.

But Kies does not recognize the phone So it does not even try to install the drivers.
I am stuck. Without ODIN recognizing my phone, i can not flash anything on it or revert to stock. Would be great to know if there is anything I can do from Recovery Mode. The phone goes to Download mode as well but what's the use.
well this is a long shot but you could try and manually install it by going into where you installed kies in my case its C:\Program Files\Samsung\USB Drivers\24_flashusbdriver choose the X64 folder seeing as you are on a 64bit system and right click FlashUSB_x64.inf and install

i was having this problem too till i sent it back to samsung service centre where they changed the whole board.
my computer totally couldn't recognize my sms on either odin or usb. it won't restart when not connected to charging/power.
i've got a warranty claim and now it back and rooted with gingerbread 2.3.3 jvb install.
samsung service centre is the best. with service like that i'll stay with samsung all the way.

an obvious question, but since no one has asked it yet, are you in the download mode ? You have to be in download mode for Odin to detect.

Yeah, I ended up doing the exact same thing. Something must have gone weird, because the phone would still charge, but wouldn't be recognized by anything.
It may well be damage to usb on phone, remove the inner cover check for cracks in soldering, and check pounds aren't out of shape
If they are gently straighten with pin

Just Remove the battery and wait for 10 seconds......
insert battery and start in download mode...
tadaaaa.....it's done....
Did you install the drivers for Hemidall? After I did this my phone was not recognize by Odin... but I'm guessing If I roll back or update the drivers some how in Device Manager then Odin would be happy again.

problem flashing back to stock phone not reconized in download mode

Hello
I have a captivate running continuum v4 (ecliar/froyo) bootloaders
I have tried Odin 1.3 with the secure.zip to not flash the boot loaders, my phone is recognized in normal mode on both my desktop running window 7 and my laptop running ubuntu 11.04, I can not get either to recognize my cappy in download mode trying odin and windows 7 I get unrecognized usb device I plugged my usb cable directly into the mother board no hubs changed ports no good same error
Tried on my laptop with heimdall and get failed to detect compatible device, I have flashed with odin before to return to stock to change roms with no issues i can not get these computers to see it in download mode I know I am in download mode it says download mode and has the yellow digger guy
any help would be great
Thanks
Holy punctuation, batman!
This may seem like a silly question to ask, but do you have your device in download mode and already plugged in before you open ODIN? If so, it won't detect that way and you need to have ODIN open first before you plug it in. If that doesn't solve anything then try the regular ODIN that does flash bootloaders.
Thanks I did start Odin and heimdall first then I go to download mode ans plug the cable in. I also tried Odin one click and nothing windows does not recognize the USB device
Error happens
I have 4 motherboard USB and tried them all

Huh. I'd reinstall the phone drivers along with ODIN and try it again, maybe you got a bad download. If that doesn't do anything, then I can't figure out what's wrong.
I will try that funny thing is that is the same machine I have used before to flash and the same Odin one click I've used before my only windows machine all others are Ubuntu Linux also in Linux if you type lsusb it shows the USB devices connected but in download mode it does not show anything Samsung

Good, Heimdall can save you sometimes. Especially for us *nix weirdos!

Bricked even with download mode ?

Hi All,
here is the story, I was on MilkyS GB rom, made a ndriod backup, then flashed dark knight 2.1 then wiped , flashed DK3 w/ Semaphone. Today, I was going to flash stock JVU via Odin but while I was charging up the phone I already noticed Windows was showing error saying something like ' USB device is malfunction cannot install' , so I thought that must be a DK3 bug for not able to access to the SD card, so I did not care.
Went ahead and tried to flash Odin, sure enough Odin did not detect my phone, so did Google and found 'Gnex USB drivers' which by the way took forever to install, while waiting , I thought I might as well just go back to MilkyS GB by using the backup I have done before, so I went in recovery tried to restore, but not successful, so I went ahead and choose reboot....now I am stuck at the boot screen, pull battery, I can go into download mode , however, Odin cannot detect the phone so I still can NOT flash anything.... (just now tried all kinds of drivers I can find, CM7 USB driver, Google usb_driver_r04-windows, even installed the drivers within Andriod SDK, still can't detect the phone..)
Any suggestions ? am I out of luck ? by the way, tried installing drivers in 3 x different laptops and with different USB port on them...
Have you tried a different USB cable? Also ensure KIES is not running & that there are no KIES processes running in the background. Make sure no other usb devices connected to the pc. I've also heard Windows 7 64bit can be the issue sometime but not sure so maybe try a windows xp pc.
Also try disabling any antivirus/firewall on the pc. I had this is issue but for me restarting pc and using a different USB port did the trick.
Should you figure out the USB issue you can't actually restore a Gingerbread backup from ICS.
You will need to get a stock rom (darky resurection should also work) and flash with ODIN. You will need a 3 file stock rom (pda, phone, csc) & 512 pit file.
From here you will need to select all files into relevant places, check repartion and run ODIN. Sometimes I've also needed to flash a second time with just the 3 files and repartition unchecked.

thanks scubadude for your reply. Yes, tried 2 x cables, 3 x laptops and all the USB ports on the laptops, now trying on a clean XP , AV disabled PC still no go.
I know the Odin 3 file process and so on and I kind of know that I can't flash GB on top of ICS that is why I attempt to flash stock in Odin but I guess I was just impatient to wait for the stupid Samsung driver to be installed and made a stupid mistake...

I guess you have tried going back in recovery mode using the 3-button combo but that is also not working?
Odin isn't recognizing your phone but does windows recognize it? If you uninstall all samsung drivers and then try to connect your phone to PC does it ask for installation of drivers? .. if it doesn't that means your phone's usb could have become faulty.. (just speculating)
Or you can try to use Heimdall instead of Odin.. maybe that'll work for you..

Try using Heimdall for mac or linux. It does the same as Odin with no drivers.
Also try cleaning the contacts in usb port on the phone with a small brush(this worked for me when I had similar problems).

thanks tried Heimdall Frontend suite 1.3.1 , also tried Zadig.exe included in the package, the computer still does not detect the phone in download mode.
btw , I have also already use Android SDK to install the Google USB driver....see attached.
Had a similar situation.
Eventually used EZbase's "Odin" version and it worked using the drivers he linked to.

Try using Heimdall for linux. The windows version depends on drivers while the linux does not need drivers.
Also try turning USB-debugging on. Some people report that this is needed for download mode, though I don't see how this can make a difference as the OS is not loaded when using download mode.
If this doesn't work I think you have a hardware problem.
EDIT: Don't use WM-ware etc for the above. I think an Ubuntu live CD will be fine.

[Q] USB mode not working

Hey, been using this site for couple weeks now and loving all the roms you guys make but i'm having trouble getting my s5830 to connect through usb mode.

The drivers should be set up already if not try and reinstall them again you might aswel delete Kies unless you have a stock phone, what are you trying to do?
