Updated to ICS using LG Update tool...now ready to bin my phone. Gee I was really stupid and just assumed that an official rom from LG would (a) work better than previous GB and (b) add new features rather than take away features. So far:
a) HDMI out not working
b) exchange active sync not working
c) no way to turn off camera shutter
d) LG UI laggy and slow
e) no real improvements in photo, video or music quality.
without the ability to sync to my work emails this phone is next to useless for me...
How has everyone's experience been? any of the above??
Being a newbie at flashing roms and the likeI assume I can get back to stock GB somehow ?
Yes it's awful extremely slow and buggy. Now since they have released it it might even be low priority to solve bugs....
You can revert to GB.
Use smart flash and a smart flash copy of the GB firmware.
Here you can find the stock firmwares V10 (froyo) V20(GB)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035041
And here is how to flash it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008070
just put the file with AP in the name where it says AP and CP where it says CP.
Might need to try to flash a few times if it fails. Or do it with the battery inside after the software update mode have been activated.
Good Luck
No problems here
Yes it's pretty bad. I found GB to be bad too though.
It took the Devs here to do LG's job for them and make GB good and they will do the same for ICS too I am sure
Yes, you can go back to stock GB but you will need to do a bit of research, like how to use Nvflash and/or smartflash. There are guides around if you do some searching.
Disaster is a compliment. It's slow, laggy, buggy... It's amazing they took so long to ruin an OS.

I had the same opinions with stock ROMs on several other lower-midrange non-Nexus devices. HTC Sense was a performance killer on my old Desire Z and Touchwiz also made my friend's GS2 lag at times. On the newer superphones like the GS3 and HTC One X these skins don't cause any lag, but they don't deserve to exist on weaker models.
LG should have known better than to overlay that s**t on ICS with only 512 MB RAM... how hard is it to give us vanilla android? They did it for the T-Mobile G2X in the states (froyo).

I'm in your Opinion. I went to V30a because with CM10 i got often BSODs and on CM10 is a very high battery drain... But CM10 was much faster and smoother Hope the Problems in CM10 get fixed.

Devs have already made what is to be made from ICS. There isn't much more into it than what has already been done. Only thing that is being awaited now is official source codes so the developing of CM10 & CM10.1 truly can show its colors
I disagree.
It's not any worse than any of the GB ROMs. I don't really imagine, what you're doing with the device on a daily basis, except of testing absolutely all of the functions (e.g. HDMI out - I bet more than 50% of people never use it), and launching all apps or scrolling rapidly to just check "smoothness".
I'm pretty use we'll get the small things you mentioned fixed with custom ROMs based on this ICS release.

there you go... the fact that people have to resort to custom ROMs to get acceptable performance says a lot, right?
While I'd never use a stock ROM, I'd expect it to be smooth and responsive at the very least without bogging down from the smallest tasks like having 3 browser tabs open with music playing and whatsapp in the background.

As for me, the best stock ROM I ever had on this phone:
a) Don't have a solution here unfortunately...
b) Try Nitrodesk Touchdown app, works like a charm with a lot of additional useful functions than the built-in email app? PM if you need the app
c) Seems like silent mode can be a solution (though not practical to change mode everytime you want to use the camera)?
d) No such thing on my phone, fastest LG stock ROM ever on my phone.
e) I was already ok with the quality: it's a phone, not a camera. Photos it makes are not really good I agree (I regret my Xperia X10i for that!!), but I don't expect miracles from it. Maybe another app can do better, but I don't know any...
Finally, battery drain is very correct, much more than with GB for me (see pictures attached).
So I can't agree with you, this ICS stock ROM is much better than any other LG stock ROM. I come from DJ1.7.1 which is an excellent ROM, and still, I will keep using ICS, waiting for the developers' magic!
HDMI out is working btw...What are u talking about;
720p only but other than that works properly.
Have not tried HDMI yet.
It is waay faster then GB in all apps. Had reverted to V20Q before V30A (to check official update and there was not any in my locale). And honestly, GB was mighty slow compared to ICS. (And I found V20Q faster than 90% of ROMs here, Django - recommended to me as faster - looks hideous. Even if it was faster, I would not be able to use for it looked like something from 1999. And those animations, no matter if were faster to render, were waay too slow)
Stock GB also has terrible problem with screen tearing.
CM7 was fine, but was pretty much the same in terms of speed. (And I really do not overclock/ramhack my phone, for it decreases stability dramatically - after 50mins of calling at 13xxMHz, you fire up browser and it crashes for overheat...)
ICS (stock) on the other hand is faster than GB at stock speed.
And CM10 is faster than ICS (stock).
So there is that.
I mean, in stock ICS I still wait instant/1,5 secs for phone app to start. But it is better than GB - 3 secs. And it is worse than CM10 instant/0.6secs.
All that said, LG is terrible software maintainer, but P990 has only 512MB of RAM (with 128 MB alocated to GeForce ULV). Therefore I am not that suprised.
And do not use any memkillers or other stuff. Basically to do all this app provides, just set the limit for background apps. That said... if you are using e.g. Talk, SMS, Phone, Browser constantly plus some other apps (like InternetBanking app or GDrive, Maps) it might be better for your experience and battery to just let it as it is on default. It works better when they are in RAM.
Lovin' It - Stop complaining
I completly disagree - it may be a bit late but there is no reason to be pessimistic about it.
a) It does work - I just tested it on my TV. There is no options for it in the settings anymore though, but it runs at 1280x720 anyway. (I know 1080 was the highest)
b) I don't use it, so can't comment there.
c) Yes there is - I use Llama and my silent profile shut the shutter up. So its either notification or media volume.
d) No, its not. Maybe for the first minute of boot before you kill some programs, but other than that fastest UI so far, even though I still installed GO Launcher.
e) Haven't tested, but is 1080p recording in 30fps now? If not, this is from ICS changelog for O2X and other phones (LGSingapore):
adding bitrate video recording (720p only 7Mbps who first kept so 9Mbps, which first 1080p 16mbps 10mbps now), fixesbug camera (focus, time capture, white balance)

So it must be a bit better now.
If you really want to complain, here is the un-edited version of the predicted changelog from the Singapore comment, have fun:

gesture, plus a look underneath, and face unlock), quick memo (write on your screen wherever you want ), new gallery ics, new notification, task manager ics , 4

err..excuse me but I have been using the 'new features' of the ics rom for 24hrs now and I can verify that (1) HDMI is not working (whereas GB rom was working) and (2) ms active sync is not working and I have not been able to retrieve emails since installing ICS (and I was definitely getting them before ) .
I appreciate this may not be the same for everyone -
The point of this post was to share my experiences with the new rom and hopefully get some advice or solutions from others who may have been through the same problems ...isn't that what these forums are for ..
PS: flashed back to GB rom and all working ok again...obviously something about my phone and v30 that didnt get along !

If you do what they say, you'll have root on 4.1, the reason they dont have it is that they dont read, and thats not the phones fault.
Cam is good, better then your 2011 5mp phone cams.
Battery is good only if you dont play. If you play 3d games battery is 2-2.5 hours.
If you use phone normal for internet+email+music you get about 1.5 days.
the best phone out
The phone is amazing the fastest camera to date but lacking on the quality side but still ok.. And everything else is superb.. It beats the galaxy s3 and plus out is water proof with out any case..

Thoughts on this phone from me:
For the money a great phone. Battery life leaves something to be desired but that's about the norm for lte android phones from mid 2012. If you put on the eb40 maxx battery it helps tremendously. Phone runs too hot. Doing moderate multitasking the things heats up pretty good. Screen is great. Colors are bright, videos look amazing. Camera is good enough for point and shoot, but shutter/focus is a bit laggy ... Quality of pics are good in light, poor in low light. Build quality is decent, not a fan of the plastic bezels. Wish the kevlar wrapped around more. The phone as a phone itself is great, terrific call quality and fast data speeds on lte. Try to get used to not having a custom ROM or kernel cuz its not gonna happen most likely. I just took a step back and try to enjoy the phone for what it is instead of hacking it 9 ways to Sunday.
Just my experience.
Sent from my MotoAHD Maxx
For the Money this is a very solid phone. Great call quality, fast data speeds when on LTE but also got pretty decent speeds when on HSPA+ fast processor for the most part stock Android which is always a plus the phone is built fairly well would have like a little thinner bezel around the phone but like the look of the Kevlar back. The screen is beautiful and very bright. Camera is a mixed bag when in sunny conditions and good lighting the pictures turn out pretty good but things take a dive in lowlight, The Battery is about average. Really the pros out weigh the cons
Battery - Good, gets me through a full day with smart actions and juice dfeneder with over of hour of gaming
Camera - good, i dont see why people hate on it so much. Its 8mp and has a freakin slow motion video, what else do I need?

Battery: Not so good. My Atrix 4G with its worn out battery was better. Did the EB40 mod and I am very happy now.
Camera: Average. Not very sharp images and colors could be better. They look good on the phone itself because of the colorboost screen but see them on a computer monitor at full resolution and you'll be disappointed.

I'm running the CM 10.1 (Jellybean 4.22) FINAL stable. Its fast - sometimes but often the phone really lags when switch tasks, from say shazam app or whatsapp to phone contacts, and gives a black screen with no response for a while. Its very frustrating. The video also lags when recording and drops many frames. I am wondering also if the phone really is faster on ICS or even gingerbread. Yes its cool to run the latest but really for everyday use we want the phone to be as fast as poss.
Maybe someone can come and confirm this is just a bad config and later roms are ok or the solution is ICS for the OP
I mainly use my phone for facebook and internet...
IMO you should stick with GB mate if you want your phone to be as fast as possible. Gigabread+ is my favourite gb rom.

Well I'm using CM10.2 nightly. It is definetly faster than ICS. I have two devices for comparison. I would say that it is even faster than GB. If you want to record 720p I would recommend to stay with GB, becaus in CM video recording is worse than in stock. In my config the battery drain with CM10.2 is higher than it was with GB.

like already said, with normal use you'll get 1,5 days out of it. the camera issues are not present on every device (purple dust on very dark pictures) and we don't exactly know if it's a software or a hardware issue. we'll see if it got fixed when 4.3 comes out officially.
i exachanged my i9500 to one 802w dual sim and batt life is THE SAME. That means in 9500 batt life is worse that htc one international.
I have the black HTC One and my girlfriend has the silver.
Both running Android Revolution HD 21.0 and Elemental X kernel 5.2
Both our phones will last a whole work day starting at 9am and ending around 8pm. She's a real estate agent so she's always on phone calls and I do IT so I use mine primarily for scheduling, web browsing and text.
Phone is fast, camera is absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend this phone enough!
I've had mine for a little over a month and love it.
I find that the 32gb is enough for my apps, music and some movies (even if you need some more space there are external storage options).
I haven't had any serious issues with the camera in my device although focousing in low light can be a hastle - by the way the burst feature is fantastic. Something to be noted although the camera is only 4mp the quality of those pixels is very good. HDR is a really great option too if you have a steady hand or a place to rest your phone while you take the photo.
I had a bit of trouble wraping my head around the Sense UI but Apex fixed that in a jiffy. On the subject of Sense I do have a slight fondness for the lock screen and use it.
Now I will be the frist to admit this was a huge step up from my old LG Optimus Black but this is a serious piece of hardware.
I have nothing else to add on what's already been said expect there is a way around the purple haze in low light camera shots. All I do is lower the iso in the camera app to 100 or 200 and use the flash. Works a treat till a fix comes along. This doesn't work in HDR camera mode though as the iso isn't adjustable in HDR.
Apart from the above the phone is fantastic and feels well built. Take the plunge and get one, you won't regret it!
Need an honest opinions of both sides here.
I have used touchwiz since I got my phone, but the lag is getting unbearable. That slight lag really pisses me off from time to time. I really enjoy the camera on touchwiz, but I hear that AOSP is smooth.
I'm on firekat have tried poprocks, no different in speed compared to stock in my opinion.
The battery life is good, get about 2-3 SOT with decent usage.
AOSP users, how you liking CM remix or CM?
Thanks in advance!

I used CM for a long time on my Note 4. It was super fast. But had a few issues. Like with most CM builds it takes a lot of development before it becomes really stable, and lollipop was still not there when i tried it.
Also losing the great samsung camera, the quick charge, and the sPen functions really was a bummer.
I still recomend giving it a try though, it really flies.
As for TW, I'm with you about the lag. It is like randomly, every once in a while, the phone gets stuck. I really think it has to do with all of the stuff samsung is running in the background on the phone.
To fix it I took Poprocks v14 and removed about 700mb of crapware before i installed it. (rezipped it and flashed it) Basically its as stock as TW can be while still keeping the sPen and camera feature. Its been pretty lag free, and fast. Still not as fast as AOSP, but as close as I have ever got TW.

Quick charge is hardware AND software. It's why on a TW based ROM you can turn it on and off. AOSP chargest faster than it did on other phones, but its not nearly as fast as the quick charge allows on a TW ROM. So don't comment on stuff if you don't actually know how it works, and definitely dont be an uh.... Smartass about it.
The AOSP camera takes worse pictures than the Samsung camera. It again doesnt have the right drivers to take full advantage of the camera hardware. It also doesnt have all of the features like slow mo video, etc.
If you want an easy way to test the camera take a picture in CM with HDR activated, then take a picture in TW with HDR activated. Its a pretty stark difference, the AOSP camera is just not very good.
You can use the app "open camera" to get a bit better quality. But it still doesnt compare to the stock TW camera.

Sure it is. That's why my Note 4 can do 0-50% in the 30 minute rated fast charge time on AOSP. Just because you can turn it on and off on TW doesn't mean the requirements are not in hardware. Maybe you should do some more learning and you would stop being a smartass about stuff you are clueless on. That or maybe you can explain how it is possible my fast charging works perfectly on AOSP then? I mean you say it doesn't work but I can easily tell it does or charging would take far longer.
As far as the Camera, I'm not arguing that is is as good, I know it isn't. AOSP camera however is fine for me and probably most other people.

Think you need to do a bit more research. I said it charges faster. But definitely at a slower rate than TW. Its all about how much power is being allowed to enter the phones battery and what the software deams safe levels for that charge. Since AOSP is based off an open source kernel it is not using the same power input as a TW ROM on a stock kernel. On AOSP it is limited more to protect the battery and work across multiple devices. On TW it is built for this phone and this battery.
I'm done arguing though and getting a bit tired of people who know nothing about coding answering questions. Your original comment added no value to the thread and your continued participation is only further derailing the intelligent conversation. Good day sir.

If anyone wants it send me a PM i can't post it on here without the original devs permission. May open up a private group on Google+ to manage it if people want it though.

Or could you possibly just post a list of what you removed?
Alternately, a list of what you've kept. One quick way: adb shell pm list packages
