Hey guys, I have a Droid 4 with Verizon and want to drop them for Straight talk and save a fortune. Straight talk uses Verizon towers in my area, and I want to use my same phone, but I read a few places that Verizon phones won't work with Straight talk. Is this true? My phone has a sim card (one of the smaller ones) so I don't know why it wouldn't work. Anyone have any in site or advice on this? Thanks in advance for any help guys.

You'll need to read through the forums for gsm mod.

Even if I would be using the Verizon towers through Straight Talk? I apologize if this is a stupid question.

Yes because straight talk uses both CDMA and gsm technology

Getting my droid 3 from ebay tomorrow. Do i need a sim if im just using it in u.s.?
It isn't the question but the way its asked.
That depends on what you intend to do with it. For most users, no.
No I have my global sim card out and it does not require a 4g sim either because... well because its not 4g.

That's not a stupid question. You need a sim card to use it in the US as well.

This is a Verizon phone and Verizon has never used sim cards because they are CDMA. The sim card slot is for GSM signals in other countries, since US based GSM providers like at&t and t-mobile are blocked on this.
Thanks for the replies. It came with one....but as I found out, its not needed for U.S. operation. BTW....loving the phone(even without root).
Hello, guys. I just came to USA and I do not how everything works here. I want Droid 3 as you can already know because I am posting here) I can buy this perfect device only locked by verizon but I do not like their plans so I think that AT&T will be good for me.
So as I understand after reading this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172521&page=1 the necessary steps are the following:
1) I buy the phone for example here Droid 3 by motorola .
2) I buy the unlocking code at ebay (the seller is freedomobile).
3) I unlock the device using above code.
4) I buy the AT&T SIM-card.
5) I activate the SIM-card
and everything should work. Is everything correct?
And one more question: will I have the warranty?
How about buying already unlocked phone here http://negrielectronics.com/motorola-xt860-droid-3-850-1900-3g-unlocked.html
Thank you very much.

I am not going to preach about searching or anything because it's quite lame IMO.
However, to answer your question, it won't work. From what I understand, Verizon was able to convince/modify/something with Motorola to prevent GSM networks inside the US to use the phone. I am not sure of the technical reasons specifically, but as far as I know, an unlocked Droid 3 just will not work on US GSM networks.
Besides, I strongly discourage against AT&T. There are reasons why people are willing to pay slightly more for Verizon.
Verizon tinkered with the baseband firmware which blocks all US GSM networks. We cannot replace the firmware unless we have an unlocked bootloader.

Might not answer your question but I thought I saw someone post saying they use their droid 3 on cricket. *shrug*

The D3 can be flashed to Cricket. The Droid 2 Global, which is also a global, can be flashed to Cricket. The thing is that VZW doesn't want their global phones being used on GSM bands (AT&T/T-Mobile) in the US.

So, the only way to buy the phone in USA is choosing the operator at first and then choosing the phone on the web site of the operator, correct?
And how about already unlocked devices by negrielectronics?
If you can get the proper unlocking code it WILL work on ATT. I know TeamBlackHat(which has a good reputation) sells these codes and has successfully done it.

They are pretty reputable. They sent Jon over at technobuffalo a htc sensation that was unlocked and could be used on att. I would say go for it.

XT860 (Bell and OEM) may work, read few success stories about it.
The regular XT862, which is verizon's version will not work definitely.
I'm not from the US though, but I visit the states every summer and I know that my upcoming XT862 will not work while i'm visiting

Have similar question with regards to this problem.
I am using a Droid3 XT862 that has been unlocked, and I'm living in Jamaica.
However for some reason I cannot get the phone to work with one of my local networks. I can get it to work with two of them, namely Digicel and Claro. But I cant get it to work with Lime for some strange reason. I know the phone is capable to operate on the bandwidths which are listed below:
Digicel: GSM 900/1800 MHZ, UMTS 900 MHZ
Lime: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
Claro: GSM 850/1900 MHZ, UMTS 850/1900 MHZ
All of which can work on the phone, and I also believe I shouldn't have the problem because I'm not using a US network where use is firmware locked. But my network of choice is Lime who is the only network that offers 3g locally. When I put in my lime sim it says "invalid sim card/no sim" and when I try to register to the lime network the phone says "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network".
Any suggestions/solutions?

(@wjones) Just head over Droid 2 Global section.
But before you do so, let me give you the bad news. TBH solution will not work on D3, neitheron does on newer D2G/DPro firmwares. It is all described there by CellZealot (TBH) in the D2G thread. Sorry, if you want D3 on AT&T, go buy Bell XT860.

Hey, is anyone else receiving less than par download speeds on straight talk? In my settingsit only say hsdpa, not hspa+. I've been up and down this forum and others but couldn't get anywhere. That's why I'm now posting. Its almost rediculous. 50kbps is just unacceptable for a supposedly 4g phone and plan. Can anyone help me,or share what they did to fix it? Thanks so much.

I also have Straight Talk also and I read that at&t phones can't use the Lte/Hspa+ I believe if you get a T-Mobile phone and get a T-Mobile sim from Straight Talk then you can use hspa+ you can verify this on Howard Forums they have a section just for Straight Talk customers there.
Thanks so much.. lol finally

Wife and I just bought a Motorola droid bionic, Been reading that it is possible to put on the h20 wireless network. I have been messing with the phone all day. I finally got pass the setup at the start, First I was getting "this sim is from an unknown source" error, I bypassed that now I am trying to determine if I am able to take it to h20 wireless or not. I don't want to forced to pay the $80 a month w/verizon.
Phone is Verizon Droid Bionic,
I have the h20 sim, but i get the above error.
I have found a way to bypass the setup as mentioned above, I forgot to mention i have a "no Sim" error now" Would this be because of H20?
Trying to solve this A.S.A.P my pageplus plan expires 2mrw, then i will have no phone.
Any ideas?

The process in its self is not that difficult but different bionics seem to have different results.

I'm on page 12, I am very confused on where to even start for 1. I know its not as simple as popping the sim card in and it working. Good thing is i have both an h20 wireless sim and at&t sim so i can go to either. But i prefer h20 so i can return the AT&T phone.
Would it be too much to ask for some step by step help with this process? My wife wants to return this phone and get another one, But were both disabled and can't afford to put any more $ out so i've been reading 4 the last 2hours.
Thanks in advance.
In my opinion not enough is known yet for the bionic to be a reliable gsm phone. When I had mine on AT&T it got a weak signal. My friend is on AT&T and a lot of times he would have a good signal and I wouldn't have one at all, and like I said earlier different bionics seem to have different results. I read in that forum that on person had like 1 out of 3 that the mod worked on. If I were you I would sell the bionics and buy at&t phones. But that's only my opinion.

Update
Ok, so I was playing with the sim card.1. this is my first phone ever with a needed sim card. So i was playing with it thinking i might have put it in backwards or something.
so my guess i did, no i am no longer getting a grey ANT with red circle, i am getting no signal and when i attempt to make call i get the following error " outgoing calls are restricted by FDN".. In my mind this is progress to me.
But what is my next step?:good:
Thinking about it

So I broke a phone and a friend gave me a Sgh-t679 for TMobile... I did a little searching and I see I pretty much have to pay for an unlock code... If I pay for a code can I use it on Verizon as they use cdma and lte? And as they use a micro Sim? I thank you kindly for your time I greatly appreciate a reply...

Thank you kindly for you reply... I was just checking, as in *#*#info#*#* menuthere is the option cdma only... So I take it, that statement was your kind and polite way of saying "no sir, unfortunately this is a GSM only device and you will not be able to use it on a CDMA network"....so if that's the case I thank you for that...

There is a difference with what you are talking about and what your asking. What you asked refers to hardware, the modems are not compatible. Roaming is slightly different. Most CDMA carriers do not use a Sim style card, as far as I know Verizon is the only company that does. In the U.S. there are a few gsm carriers that would work with the t679. But it will never work on a CDMA network. For more info on the difference between CDMA and gsm check Google, there are several articles explaining why its not possible. That's how I knew the answer to your question to begin with.
I am using ATT. ATT is also gsm. Verzon is cdma. You cant use a gsm phone on CDMA. Sorry:crying::crying:
