So earlier this month I hard bricked my captivate playing with bootloaders going from Froyo to GingerBread. Yes...I'm a noob...
The phone got stuck at SBL.bin for over eight hours. Then I pulled the batt and the USB. Then it was game over.
I contacted MobileTechVideo, paid them my money and shipped it off to them.
It got there yesterday. They have had it for 24 hours now....I'm excited to possibly have it back before Xmas...
I paid extra for them to install a rom/upgrade for me.
I'm thinking of going to ICS, but I really use the phone as a Daily Driver and would like something stable.
I'm not asking what rom should I go with. I understand that those threads get locked quickly.
But should I go ICS yet or stay with GingerBread?
Remember, I won't be flashing the rom, MobileTechVideo will be so no worries about messing it up!
My fear is that if I don't get ICS professionally installed now, then I won't be comfortable about flashing it myself later. And I really don't want to miss out...
I'm torn about what todo....
I'm assuming you are getting unbrickable mod, which, what do you think you will screw up if you install a ROM? You are unbrickable.

Maybe I missed the point, but as a daily driver, I would think you would want something that has a little more track time on a large install base..
I was faced with the same question, and chose to go with one of the leaked ROMs. As much fun as this can be, I need my phone to be working as well...
Good luck with your choice!
Well that's what I was confused about. ICS will act the same weather it's "professionally" installed or I install it. There is no Nexus S source so it's bound to be super buggy regardless.

Funny you ask....
I originally did ask for the unbrickable mod because 'doesn't that sound good? Who wouldn't want that?'
Then I spent a night reading about it....and changed my mind.
I may be wrong here, but from what I read it's great for a guy who is an expert, runs a linux box and spends his days flashing various rom combinations.
However for a noob, I didn't want to be bothered with holding down the power button for 5 seconds on every boot. And I sure as heck don't have a linux box to get into the unbrickable portion to actually unbrick the thing. It didn't seem to me like a nice easy, 'Here's how to get out of trouble by clicking your heels together three times' item that I need as a noob.
No, it sounds great on paper, but I think in reality if I brick it again for some reason, I'll just pay MTV to fix it. It's a tradeoff between giving MTV some of my money when I mess up and usability on a daily basis. I'll take usability thanks. I am gratefull that there are experts here who have the ability to repair the phone no matter what I do to it.
That doesn't mean that I will stop reading XDA and learn though...By the time my upgrade is due, I may have enough knowledge to use it on my next phone.

That's what I was leaning towards too. I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't going to miss out on the new shiney stuff that the 'cool' kids are playing with....
2.3 is more stable

self-proclaimed noob should not even be considering ICS (which is in alpha/beta at best)....
it shouldnt even be a thought in your head if you want stable and dont know anything
So in this thread I mentioned AT&T shipped a replacement phone because I was dealing with a random shutoff issue. I assumed they'd send me a retail box phone and I'd just send my old phone with the other accessories back... They sent me just the phone and SIM, so I had to use my battery and battery cover. I was messing around with the new cappy for awhile and *bam!* shuts off too.. Sure enough I looked at the battery and it appears to have swollen just a little... Anyway, new battery is en route but the stock Gingerbread (2.3.5) SUCKS, to put it nicely. I've had my Froyo based captivate up to ICS before and it wasn't too bad to do, but from what I've read and tried the GB phones can be a bit trickier initially, plus things have changed quite a bit since I first flashed the other phone back around August. Is it possible to downgrade the captivate to a Froyo ROM/bootloader and root/flash it from there? My ultimate goal is to get it rooted (of course) and flash SlimICS on it. That's my favorite ROM due to zero bloatware and minimalistic simplicity and it's pretty snappy on the older phone. Any suggestions? I've been researching but you can only go so far with guides and I don't want to brick this phone or spend hours throwing hacks at it that have no effect. I'm not a total noob but am very cautious, since I'm not confident I can recover from a disaster.
TRusselo's Guide that is a Sticky Thread in the Q & A forum is ur best way to go...

I'll check that out. Thanks... and It helps if I paid attention... I completely overlooked it.. lol
Awesome.. I followed that guide and managed to get SlimICS flashed to it (mostly) painlessly. The only issue I had was I forgot about flashing the base twice, once for the kernel and second for the ROM itself, resulting in a reboot loop but I quickly figured it out after googling and followed the steps to get it back up and running. Helpful people and cool ROMs is why I love XDA.
Good job on searching and figuring it out.

Hey guys, a while ago I used the information found (now buried) in the thread "Bionic on Tmobile" to get my Droid Bionic working on Straight Talk network (using one of their sim cards), which is functioning almost perfect. A few months ago, even though I kept telling my phone "NO!", it decided to ignore me and download the OTA update, assuming it's for ICS. Twice a day I tell it "NO!" to installing the update, but getting tired of that, and want the bug fixes/updates on ICS now anyway.
I've been out of the coding/rooting/etc circles for a while now, haven't done much, so everyone is speaking greek now, lol! I need a very simple, laymans terms (click this, type THIS, flick this, etc) instruction, and I can't figure out if what I need is already posted or not.
Can someone help please? You may need extreme patience, but if the instructions are clear enough I can follow them without a problem .
Thanks!
You just gotta do the same method, plus a couple changes in the build probs ill find u the link

Hello. I am totally new to rooting. I've done a lot of research, and usually because I can't really understand a lot of the jargon or instructions I just kind of stay away from it. Well, now that I've had to give up my Nexus 4 for an the older Droid 3, I'm finding it difficult going back a few generations and the lack of fluidity is very bothersome. The best suggestions I've gotten is to root. Can someone please help me by breaking down some step by step instructions? (I'm really at a loss as to how to get started, and since this is my only device after having to let go of the Nexus I can't really afford to accidentally brick it). Also I've also noticed that a lot of the roms have issues with the Droid's camera, so can someone advise me on the best one to use once I've rooted as well? Thanks a lot.
If you want a fast smooth rom I say go with minimoto

Just flashed my first ROM (Cataclysm). Needless to say I was very nervous but thanks to these forums I rooted and flashed pretty easily. My only question is, how to I avoid becoming addicted now....

Hi,
Never begin flashing stuff...
Go back to full stock and never unlock/root again...
Forget this nice and exciting moment (first flash), it's bad for you and your addiction, no longer look behind you, look ahead ...
Think about how you was very nervous, too much stress, maybe too dangerous for health and it's not worth...
Think about your phone, maybe to much stress and fear for him too, maybe it doesn't like you for now, save your relation with him, it is not yet too late...
Try to find help from a repentant flashaholic...
And the most important, leave XDA for always...
In any case welcome and congratulations...

Welcome to XDA! There's no turning back! Happy Flashing!
I wouldn't say there's no turning back. I used to flash every rom there was starting from the Samsung Captivate all the way through the HTC One. Starting from my Moto X, and now this phone, I haven't flashed a single rom. I guess stock android is just that good now. Of course, I always root and install gravity box, but who knows, maybe that will go away soon too with 5.0.
Well done for flashing the best rom already. U don't need to flash any others now anyway

It'll pass, I've gone the other way and gone back to 100% stock (locked bootloaded and all!) as I got bored of flashing new stuff every (other) day. Android is at a point now where stock does everything I need it to

I'll agree with that. I got hooked flashing all the time starting with cm9 on my devices. Flashing every single night etc. Did this for years. Only thing I have done is flashed Franco kernel on my N5 and have Gravity Box installed. Couldn't be happier.
I am in same boat too, just flashing kernels these days.
I have to have, Elemental for my usage, followed development before I had my N5. (Using since HOXL)
The rest, I may try, but usually go back to stock other then kernel.
Hence my desire for nexus, no skins to remove, just a tweak or two.

I'm going to have to agree with you. A couple years ago, I was flashing constantly (multiple roms a day if I was feeling really crazy). Now, I just don't feel the need. Stock Android is rock-solid at this point and I don't feel like roms offer any meaningful improvement anymore. It was a whole different ballgame back in the CM7 days.
While I'm completely stock on the N5, and probably will be for a while...one of the inherent joys of having wizbang custom roms is that often times when other people pick up your phone, they seriously have no idea how to use it.
It's nerdy to think this is fun of course, but dammit...it is fun.
Flashing Rom is the only way imo.
however stock N5 is near perfect

Heh... it's addicting.
Much as I liked the stock stuff, I got used to the fancy stuff that I had running paranoid android 3.99 on my s3... so now I've been ROM jumping kk nightlies trying to find the best approximation. Beanstalk is where I've settled while I wait for PA to start putting out feature nightlies in the hammerhead stream.
I'd say that the feeling that you got when you flashed your first ROM is nothing compared to the feeling of getting out of your first bootloop or bad flash or your first buildbot actually booting. Knowing how to get out of those situations bring a sense of pride that you can only get from knowing what you are doing at a base level.
I'm talking about people on forums and not your mom or friend now, but so many people don't know the very basics of how these things work. More to the point they don't know of the potential they have (both good and bad). That all comes with time and exposure though. I still remember my first terminal script for apps2sd on Éclair.
It really doesn't matter what ROM or Kernel I am running because by the time I get done breaking it down and rebuilding it, it very rarely looks like the original version. Actually troubleshooting something and fixing it correctly, then that fix gets implemented into someone else's problem and you can talk them back from the edge of panic. That is the buzz for me.
I love my N5 on stock rom, but who knows when paranoid comes with all his features ill be tempted
mee too
I used to flash roms pretty often on my Desire HD but since I've gotten my Nexus 5 I haven't flashed a rom yet. I am however, unlocked, rooted, and using a custom recovery. I'm a cm fan so once they release a stable build with all the features I want I'm sure I'll flash cm11
