Flashed My First Rom - Nexus 5 General

Just flashed my first ROM (Cataclysm). Needless to say I was very nervous but thanks to these forums I rooted and flashed pretty easily. My only question is, how to I avoid becoming addicted now....

Hi,
Never begin flashing stuff...
Go back to full stock and never unlock/root again...
Forget this nice and exciting moment (first flash), it's bad for you and your addiction, no longer look behind you, look ahead ...
Think about how you was very nervous, too much stress, maybe too dangerous for health and it's not worth...
Think about your phone, maybe to much stress and fear for him too, maybe it doesn't like you for now, save your relation with him, it is not yet too late...
Try to find help from a repentant flashaholic...
And the most important, leave XDA for always...
In any case welcome and congratulations...

Welcome to XDA! There's no turning back! Happy Flashing!

I wouldn't say there's no turning back. I used to flash every rom there was starting from the Samsung Captivate all the way through the HTC One. Starting from my Moto X, and now this phone, I haven't flashed a single rom. I guess stock android is just that good now. Of course, I always root and install gravity box, but who knows, maybe that will go away soon too with 5.0.

Well done for flashing the best rom already. U don't need to flash any others now anyway

Why didnt anyone warn me all those years ago?!

It'll pass, I've gone the other way and gone back to 100% stock (locked bootloaded and all!) as I got bored of flashing new stuff every (other) day. Android is at a point now where stock does everything I need it to

I'll agree with that. I got hooked flashing all the time starting with cm9 on my devices. Flashing every single night etc. Did this for years. Only thing I have done is flashed Franco kernel on my N5 and have Gravity Box installed. Couldn't be happier.

I am in same boat too, just flashing kernels these days.
I have to have, Elemental for my usage, followed development before I had my N5. (Using since HOXL)
The rest, I may try, but usually go back to stock other then kernel.
Hence my desire for nexus, no skins to remove, just a tweak or two.

I'm going to have to agree with you. A couple years ago, I was flashing constantly (multiple roms a day if I was feeling really crazy). Now, I just don't feel the need. Stock Android is rock-solid at this point and I don't feel like roms offer any meaningful improvement anymore. It was a whole different ballgame back in the CM7 days.

While I'm completely stock on the N5, and probably will be for a while...one of the inherent joys of having wizbang custom roms is that often times when other people pick up your phone, they seriously have no idea how to use it.
It's nerdy to think this is fun of course, but dammit...it is fun.

Flashing Rom is the only way imo.
however stock N5 is near perfect

Heh... it's addicting.
Much as I liked the stock stuff, I got used to the fancy stuff that I had running paranoid android 3.99 on my s3... so now I've been ROM jumping kk nightlies trying to find the best approximation. Beanstalk is where I've settled while I wait for PA to start putting out feature nightlies in the hammerhead stream.

I'd say that the feeling that you got when you flashed your first ROM is nothing compared to the feeling of getting out of your first bootloop or bad flash or your first buildbot actually booting. Knowing how to get out of those situations bring a sense of pride that you can only get from knowing what you are doing at a base level.
I'm talking about people on forums and not your mom or friend now, but so many people don't know the very basics of how these things work. More to the point they don't know of the potential they have (both good and bad). That all comes with time and exposure though. I still remember my first terminal script for apps2sd on Éclair.
It really doesn't matter what ROM or Kernel I am running because by the time I get done breaking it down and rebuilding it, it very rarely looks like the original version. Actually troubleshooting something and fixing it correctly, then that fix gets implemented into someone else's problem and you can talk them back from the edge of panic. That is the buzz for me.

I love my N5 on stock rom, but who knows when paranoid comes with all his features ill be tempted

mee too

I used to flash roms pretty often on my Desire HD but since I've gotten my Nexus 5 I haven't flashed a rom yet. I am however, unlocked, rooted, and using a custom recovery. I'm a cm fan so once they release a stable build with all the features I want I'm sure I'll flash cm11

Tired of flashing roms...

Anybody feels that flashing roms thing got annoying and at some point you realize all you do is flash roms instead of using your phone for serious matters? I like flashing roms too, but I notice that may be at some point it is no fun anymore? Share your thoughts

Whole point of flashing ROMs is to find something that suits your needs and when you find that ROM there is no need to flash anything else apart from experimenting
I have been on paranoid android for a month now and haven't have the urge to switch at all.

I used to get bored with the ROMs themselves and flash different ones from time to time just for a change of pace and to try and boost performance. Then one day I realized..
My phone sucks. (Nexus S 4G)
I'm getting a Nexus 4 today though. On which I'll probably stick to stock for a while.
P.S. Cook your own rom and you won't need to flash so many that others have made.
I rooted my Nexus S and experimented with ROMS almost endlessly. The best combo I found was actually stock rooted with a better Kernel.
However, I wont be messing about with my Nexus 4, basically I need my phone to work and I found that most ROMS simply aren't anywhere near reliable enough.
ive been stock for a while...flash CM 10 and paranoid android but nothing feels better than stock vanilla...i might root again but no rom flashing

Keep in mind this is a Development site, flashing is part of the development....if one is annoyed it is simple do not flash. Thread is going no where....Thank You.
BTW side note, why not just say "Thank You" or slap thanks to those...that provide freely the development that is going on here, on our great Development Site.

Worth it?

I just got my HTC one three days ago. Came from sensation which was good for me thanks to all the devs, roms and kernels available.
Now, this phone is a monster as it is. Is it really worth rooting and flashing roms? Stock seems to be pretty stable, and again this beast flies nonetheless.
Any input is appreciated.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Stock is really good now, unless you want to play really demanding games like NFSMW or Modern Combat 4 etc etc. HTC has set the CPU AND GPU to throttle at 40c which is ridiculously low. So if you hit these temps regularly, games would suddenly start stuttering and lagging till it goes below 40c. With a custom kernel you can tweak this, so personally that's the biggest advantage I have of going that route
Haha this is XDA man... Of course everyone is gonna say its worth it.
Personally I thought the same, stock sense is stable, smooth, and fast.
However I'm a bit of a flashaholic so I got bored within a couple weeks. And development is starting to get very very interesting. There's a ton of fantastic devs and nearly every major aosp ROM has popped up. Most of them are very stable and are getting better and better.
Its really up to you but my vote is to hold out a while, maybe until official 4.2.2 and if you get bored like I did, flash away!

Stock is very fast. I like being rooted however so I just flash ARHD when I want to have the stock look n feel
AOSP development is great, not quite DD for me yet but it's really close
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I'd stay stock. I have to admit I rooted mine and have regretted it ever since. Just doesn't feel the same even when I return to stock. The only thing good on custom roms is the settings toggles at the top of the notification bar, and it doesn't look like 4.2.2 Roms are going to have it anymore barring trickdroid.
Custom kernels introduce new issues like touch buttons not working properly and bugs and instability.
My phone was the most stable, fast and bug free when it was stock and I enjoyed it more when it was stock too. Can't go more than a day now without flashing something else to try and iron out each bug that comes up.
My vote is stay stock and enjoy your phone before it's too late.
As for cm and aosp, I can't see how they will survive much longer as stock Google loses a LOT of functionality and has awful stock apps including an awful camera app. Phones have moved past them now in my opinion and I can't see how they'll survive much longer unless they start getting access to the proper camera apps that come built into the phones.
not worth
In my opinion its not worth to root this phone. This is actually my first Android phone without root.
The stock ROM is smooth and great except enoying gallery app with Facebook photos but I can easly switch to another app without rooting.
I managed to run unrooted for three days, then I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a few roms (currently on InsertCoin and loving it) and just yesterday I S-OFF'd. Worth it.
If you don't use apps which need SU (AdFree, TitaniumBackup, RootExplorer,...) and you are happy with the stock ROM, it wouldn't be worth it.
PS: Still waiting for my black HTC One and I'm quite sure that rooting it is the first thing I do. (after charging and shortly exploring the phone)
I wasn't happy with stock at all, too stuttery and even basic games were very lagy (came from i9300 sgs3), rooted/flashed cm10.1 within a day of owning my one and haven't had ANY issues at all s-off'd using root explorer and terminal emulator just then in under a minute. Love being free and smooth lol

Waiting for the 4.2.2 release to flash a custom ROM?

Is anybody else waiting for HTC to release the 4.2.2 base and seeing what the devs do with it before flashing a custom ROM? I've had my One for about 2 weeks now and it's still unrooted and running the stock ROM (this is the longest I've gone so far).
Just wondering if I'm alone in thinking that the devs will come up with better ROMs based on 4.2 than they currently have out for 4.1
Other than quick toggles, I didn't see many stand out features vin the preview.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
4.2 isn't a huge step forward. There really is no point in waiting to root and unlock. It's still 'JellyBean' with a few extra features so the difference will be minimal, but I'm anxious for those quick settings myself. I'd say root and S-Off now to get it over with so you can flash immediately when 4.2 comes out.
I was going to wait too. But I got my phone two days ago and ended up flashing two days ago as well...

Not to sound like a lame-o but this is the first phone I've owned where I didn't feel the need to root it. Though I had similar feelings with my Epic 4G Touch a few years ago and ended up flashing probably 50 different ROMS, give or take.

I feel the same way, I've never gone this long without rooting a phone/tablet, it's usually a week at most.
This is the same boat I am in. I am not doing any of the over the air updates so it will be easier to root when it gets to that point. I am actually quite impressed with the phone (coming from the Evo 4g), I've actually thought about keeping this thing stock...then I remember that it will only get faster if I root and flash.
Yup, stock and not rooted. Waiting for the 4.2.2 and hopefully a working flashable rom of the Google Edition One with everything stable. I really want lockscreen widgets. This is the first phone where I'm not willing to sacrifice the stability of the phone, because sense 5 is pretty damn good. I'd definitely prefer an equally stable AOSP rom though.

Well.... if you look at some posts here from yesterday (2 posts up ) you will see the statement.... " Waiting for the 4.2.2 "
I waited a few weeks and started thinking that HTC dev unlock will wipe the device so I might as well get started. That and the process will be quicker once Sprint releases and development starts working to fix any of the unintended features on the new release.

Addiction

I think I'm addicted to flashing ROMS. I've flashed just about everyone I can find for my T. Even when I get settled with a ROM I truly like (Hybrid/ CM 10.2) I think to myself 'oooh, I'll just try that one with a different kernel on the off chance I can get 4 minutes more battery and a speed increase that can't be registered with the human eye.'
I'm now checking XDA more than I check Facebook on the off chance that some genius like @tilal6991 has posted a semi-stable 4.4 build.
I only rooted/ unlocked bootloader 4 weeks ago. I feel I've come a long way!

A test build of 4.4 has been posted by Thomas on his OmniROM thread - it does have a couple of showstopper bugs like calls not going out and screen flashing everytime you select something (there's a hack around this) as well as broken GPS. It is out there though.

Thank you! It is nice to know I'm not alone. I'm quite certain that I'll be buying my next phone purely on how many roms/kernels are available for it.
I had the same problem with my Xperia Arc. Pretty annoying sometimes when my phone didn't work properly when i needed it hha. But it was fun.
Weird thing is that i don't feel the need to do the same with this phone, i feel like the last jb firmware Works perfect and i don't have the need to mess with it. I rooted this phone a few months ago but it resulted in a performance decrease. So i.haven't felt the need to root again since then.

hahhahahah...so true! I love your message!
i used to be exactly the same i have calmed down a lot now i used to flash a rom at least once a day even if it was one i had used a couple of days ago just to see the difference the rom i am currently using makes if any or i would grow tireless knowing i have the ability to flash new roms but was not doing so .... i bricked a few galaxy ace's in the early days when i didn't know what i was doing and thought i could skip steps etc but once i knew what i was doing there was no stopping me i became that addicted i was flashing my friends phones with different roms too .... i have calmed down a lot now flashing only 3 - 4 times a week instead of the 7 - 100000000000000000's of times a week
(100000000000000000's is not literal but just a way of expressing countless amounts of times)
i think i have had almost all JB roms running on my T at least twice now i flick between omni, honami v5, and keep trying the 4.3 version of pacman from buildbasket waiting for a stable release .... honami is my daily because i get to use doomkernel and OC and its got enough tweaks in it to make me feel like im not stuck on boring stock rom lol for me im always looking for functions and OC and unfortunatly unless you ar on stock OC just isnt there .... sure on one of the AOKP projects you can OC to 1.7 but thats a whole 0.2 less than on a stock with doomkernel might not sound like much but it can make a difference also doomkernel comes with governors that are tweaked for dual core again something that is missing from CM AOKP etc ....... hopefully omni will resolve this issue for me and i can spread my wings a little once they have a few more settings and OC / governors are fixed up
I think I've flashed every ROM on XDA at least three times. Just in case I was missing something. The odd thing is that almost every time I flash a new ROM, I think it's better than the previous one. Which is mental. I must have flashed Rimmer's MIUI ROM 6 times. Every time I flash it I love it because it's beautiful. Then 12 hours later I get annoyed at having all the apps on the homescreen as I like it to be minimal, so I flash another ROM.
Two days later I flash it back because it's beautiful. And on and on.
*sigh*
Normally I use either peetr_'s Hybrid ROM with Doomkernel, or CM 10.2. I find Hybrid with the kernel OC is snappier, I find CM 10.2 to be smoother. These are the two I return to on a regular basis. I always feel like I'm cheating on them, both with each other and with any of the other ROMs. Again, this is mental!
Very excited for when the T gets 4.3 and we get a kernel that can be OC!
Also, I like the XDA community. Every seems nice and chilled. Generally.

im not always nice and chilled i get annoyed at noobs who ask things that have been answered hundreds of times or state something as a fact when the rest of the world know it is something completely different but i try to keep a lid on it although im sure it hasnt gone unnoticed when i have let off the steam lol .... MIUI is a really tasty rom and is real nice but i feel like i am back on iOS too much with it ... all the greatness of android with all the rubbish of iOS lol and if you install another launcher it just isn't the same the launcher was designed for that rom so why put a new one on there when there are lots of other roms to try ..... i love the honami rom like all roms it has its limits and its bugs and its by far not the quickest one out there but it serves most of my needs out the box i just wish somebody would fix up pacman rom on 4.3 had repeated problems with it not restarting instead going into bootloop after installing roms .... i will openly admit i don't know everything as i can not build my own rom i wish i knew how as i would gladly take on building pacman rom 4.3 .... anyway enjoy your T flash until you discover that magic rom .... it might even be 4.4 once they have that up and running smoothly .... once omni gets its features that will almost certainly become my daily but its just a little basic for my needs at the current time lol .... if i can help out in any ways just give me a shout i might be able to help if not im sure somebody else will be able to between the who communities collective there is a vast amount of knowledge to be tapped into

I had this impression regarding Greenify, especially since the auto-greenify feature is implemented. I can't imagine that rooting would slow down the phone.
Actually my V's stock ROM is a very good compromise in between performance, stability and fluid use. The 4.12 is rock solid and virtually lag free on my device. Well I flashed Honami Experience, but that is stock based.
Yes, it is very hard to resist this addiction ..I even infected my GF. She have Galaxy mini (terrible display) with CM10.1 some mods ..still better than stock sammy ROM.
Before Xperia T I have ACE 2 and I hated that lack of ROMs on this phone. So , after 5 months with this phone i bought T. and now I am in paradise .
Almost every day a CM or Miui update and now i flashed OmniROM from Tilal.. What a great feeling with 4.4.
Thanks OP for this Rom, made me smile
In truth, I have gone completely the other way, I used to be a flashaholic and flash new roms daily, it started with the X10 and i then bought an Xperia T off the shelf just so I could unlock the B/L - having played with everything there is to offer on here for the last year I finally trailed off flashing and the other day I flash an official stock Rom and re-locked my bootloader so as to get official 4.3 through SEUS or PCC

There's this thing called "crackflashing." Most of us have it. It's a sickness you should be able to get disability for, but you can't.
No i been with android for a while. Just figured I post this lol
I did when I first got into Android with my Droid 2, but I don't flash all that much anymore. I'm usually happy with stock debloated with root, but I'm currently running C-ROM 6.6 and I'm happy with it.
I'm like that it all started with my HTC evo lol I flash way to many roms\tweaks but right now I'm pretty set on the newest nightly of carbon rom

I think the black lines problem is easing my flash addiction lol. I just got my phone replaced due to it and I don't want it to happen again

It is addiction. I can't stop modding, flashing. Guys, I think I need help!
PS if your gonna try this don't just flash it, you will be stuck n bootloop. You've gotta use xdabbeb's scripts n dori's boot.img while you're at it, throw that STweaks in a follow/to/path/etc folder. rezip n flash away.

Just got a g2, coming from a gs4 and I'm loving it! I used to be a crackflasher when I had my gs3 and got a gs4 without doing any research. Hate the way Sammy has locked down their stuff, I used to be a big fan but I'm loving the g2. It was apiece of cake to root and put recovery on and the battery kicks ass. Currently running crom and it's great but I'll probably start experimenting soon.
Was that way on my Nexus, and still am a bit on my G2, though not AS much. Well, I can't say that completely. I usually decide at some point to see what's out there, then I'll go through 3 or 4 ROMs to see what features are on each before settling in on one for a while, til I see another thread with another release with new goodies. Currently on C-Rom 7.1 and..aside from a couple tiny things I wouldn't mind seeing, it's been stable as I could ask for over the last two days and doing well for me.

i just got out of rehab for it!its a terrible disease!like a enraged monkey on my back!
I wonder if the new Google music issue will cause people to flash less? Only 4 deauthorizations a year would be tough to stay under.

Yeah that's gonna suck if that's true.
I have the crackflashing sickness as well. Thought I could get rid of it by picking a ROM (CloudyG3) and deleting all other nandroids (PA, Mahdi) but that doesn't work either. With apps auto downloading after entering your google account info it's really easy to do a clean install. I think I got it licked this time though.
Update:i seem to be doing well i have been running stock unrooted for like 2 days now like the program says one day at a time

I'm addicted to reboots due to constant tweaking using xposed  These days it's easier for me to stick with one very stable and friendly ROM, and just tweak it however I want using xposed, compared to finding a ROM that has everything set the way I like.
I folded i just rooted my phone still have no custom recovery tho!
