I have flased a couple of roms and I am currently on Ultimate N7000 XXLSC v5.1 but I have had this issue in previous roms. When doing any on device browsing or data connection, I get continious timeouts, although it sometomes works (very slowly). 99% of the time I would just receive a no connection error message.
Even though I have H or atleast 3G icons displayed at the top. I have found that when I use my phone in tethered mode (mostly wifi) and connect with my Laptop I get full connection speeds (1Mbs and up) I have looked for a setting saying only wifi, but haven't found one that makes a difference?
Where should I look? Or what can I do to fix this?
It did the same on my previous roms and I did do a complete wipe and even formatted the external flash.

Have you checked parameters from your GSM providers ?
Take a look at Settings->More Settings->Mobile networks->Acces point names.
There are entries with parameters for each.
As I mentioned, when connecting via wifi/usb tethering form laptop (no other internet connections) I get full gsm speed. So I am thinking it is some setting from the phone itself specifying wifi only is "stuck" I do occasionally get a gmail notification and whatsapp/talk message. But it is very slow.
Browsing a site on my phone and at the same time accessing that site from a tethered laptop/tablet would result in the site timing out on the phone and almost instantly loading on the tethered device.
The problem sounds coming rather from GSM configuration. In tethering wifi mode the GSM is not in use.
you might want to reconfigure your APN Settings by contacting your service provider, you can also try different SIM to check if you have same issue (chances of which are less)

I have a TyTNII phone and after reading extensively through the threads posted, seems to have a unique problem.
My device will show the "E" icon and service provider in the Today screen and everything will be normal.
After connecting to the Active Sync via USB the phone will be normal for a while, but at some stage will disconnect from the GSM network and show no service.
At this stage the "E" icon changed to a "G". I have tried selecting the service provider, finding the network etc, but it keeps telling me to disconnect the data service and try again.
At first I thought it was blue tooth, but it does make no difference. I have loaded all the comm utils I could find and none is showing any active data sessions or connections.
Reset does not work, taking the SIM out and putting it back does not work, not even taking the battery out makes a difference.
All that seems to work is to put the SIM back in another phone and let the phone boot up to get GSM connection. After that I can put the SIM back in the TyTNII and all will be fine - even for days - as long as I do not connect USB to the PC.
Do you have any ideas on what I can do to solve the matter - it is irretating like hell to swap a sim every now and then...
could be wrong but is there a wired connection on your pc/laptop that uses a dial out and not gprs, this could cause it to run a connection on gsm on gprs.
Thank you for the reply - I have checked my pc and have no dialup connections - currently connected to Internet via Ethernet.
I have also checked the phone - during this shutdown period I am able to browse the internet from the phone.
This tells me that I have internet access, just no GSM service - its like the phone is switching the GSM network off, but GPRS and Edge is still working.
Hope that helps
Dunno where you are geographically, but At&t had some major down time last friday or thursday and it seemed again this week on tuesday or so.
Maybe this was effecting you? (boston area) Only time my kaiser does **** like that is when i leave something conflicting open, (mail, or a browser)
good luck
I've tried several radios and none of them have fixed the problem. Even when I have full bars in an HSDPA area, the first time I connect using Facebook or Opera or try to update weather or check my email, the icon shows I'm connected but apparently I'm not because I'm unable to download data. If I disconnect and then reconnect, it works perfectly the second time. If I keep it connected, it continues to work without a hiccup. I only have the problem when I connect for the first time after a few hours of being disconnected. I don't leave it connected all the time because it torches my battery. This quirk seems weird to me. I hope somebody has experienced this and can help me fix it.
I'm on AT&T and have the Tilt.
I have had this problem in certain areas. Near Dulles, VA, Greenville, SC, and a few other semi-major towns. I have no clue why it does this. I usually end up turning off 3G and going GSM only. Then I don't have that issue. Granted I loose the high speed connection, but it just has so much trouble in those areas. I have even tried multiple radios to no avail.
proxy server
If you have ATT, you need to remove the hidden proxy after disconnecting your data connection, then start an internet accessing program. The cab can be found under your windows directory.
I run CM7 nightlies on my Tmobile N1. Recently I killed my cable Internet/TV connection at home and have been using the built in WiFi tether for my home devices.
While it typically works great (for free), the data on my N1 will lock up. I have full 3G/HSDPA at my house. Using #*#*4636*#*# it states I am connected but fails to ping or load up any data on the phone or through its shared connection.
The only way to fix the problem is to toggle airplane mode and re-enable the WiFi Tether or sometimes a reset is required.
I've changed to several Gingerbread roms, flashed various radios, and even exchanged SIM cards.
Is this behavior normal or not? For regular web surfing I can live with it, but the main problem is that I cannot download anything without it getting interrupted (like updated nightlies or 50mb+ files).
Bumpity
No one has any problems with their WiFi sharing?
i used my phones internet as my regular home internet for a month. i used up about 25 gigs. i streamed videos, downloaded videos and podcasts with no interruptions. don't know what your problem could be. i was using cyan 6.1.1
I occasionally have experienced that issue, but it seems as if you have it much more frequently than I ever did. I would mainly get it when I tethered from areas with bad reception.
You state that you have full 3G/HSPA at your house. I am wondering how many bars of reception you happen to have. Also, try setting your phone to WCDMA Only in that 4636 menu. That seemed to decrease the frequency at which it happened for me.
I also found that once in a while, I could get tethered data working again by simply using the phone's native web browser to access any data. Good luck with the issue.

I typically have full bars of signal usually reading around -100dbm. When the internet drops, it drops completely; maps, browser, apps, etc all fail and I can't "jump start" it other then toggling airplane mode or resetting the phone. Typically a reset is best.
Perhaps I'll flash back to CM 6.1 and test it over the weekend. I'll do a backup of my current setup if things aren't fixed.
The purpose of this thread was simply to see if others have experienced the same issues and if it was worth "trying" to fix.
It might be a case of overheating device - it'll be good to test different ROMs and kernels.
I don't think the device is over heating at all rather then just a carrier issue. I flashed to CM 6.1.1 over the weekend and immediately found I was still having data issues (where it would work for like 5 minutes then drop out).
I did find that EDGE was a solid connection and stayed connected while I downloaded CM7 and GAPPS. I put a call into Tmobile and yacked at them for several hours. They escalated it up several times in their engineering department and so we'll see. I spoke to HTC a few times in there and they didn't think it was a handset problem either.
I guess we can close this thread as it doesn't seem to be a wide spread problem. I am running a stable version of CM7 now and we'll see.
@above: I have tested different radios, roms, and kernels. This thread started out as a issue with WiFi Tethering but ended up being the phone simply dropping its data connection. I originally was curious if this wifi sharing behavior was normal or not.

Since a few days I'm running the ICS stockrom on an unrooted Note. Before on the GB I was have not the best reception with Wifi, but it was working. Now, with ICS, my Wifi is connecting/disconnecting/connecting/and so on within a matter of seconds. I'm experiencing this on multiple Wifi networks. Therefore I would say it does not concern the settings of my Wifi network, also I'm practically sitting on the router (channel, reception can't be issue).
I've installed ICS via Kies and have done an additional factory reset today.
Does anybody know what could be the cause of this? And, more important, how to solve it?

Others have had similar issues - try reflashing the same modem from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645202
I found that wi-fi and data both worked better after flashing the modem a second time.
Thank you very much it seems to be working!!
I had to look to find out how to get the phone in download mode, but got it.
Sad to say I did an unneeded factory reset this morning, but yeah it is working now!
I've been also noticing momentary WiFi disconnections ever since I upgraded to ICS.
I'm using MyPhoneExplorer to transfer files wirelessly to the device (not via USB), and ever since ICS it has became an unreliable way to transfer files. If I transfer a big file most chances are that the WiFi connection will drop during the transfer, causing it to fail.
The connection is restored immediately but then I have to restart the transfer process as it halts when the connection fails.
I have excellent signal level (physically located close to the Access Point), I tried flashing the latest modem firmware (XXLR1) - twice, I've set "2.4GHz only" in the WiFi advanced settings, all to no avail: I still get these connection drops.
The same setup (phone, access point, etc) has all been working well in the past with GB. Now with stock ICS it performs poorly.
Has anybody got any information about this problem? Been experiencing similar problems?
Thanks!
I've been getting this issue too but it seems to only be with our virgin router, all other devices connected to it are fine although the signal is a bit crap on them to its at least stable
I tried the modem flash etc but no improvement, I'm pretty sure its the ****e virgin router

At my side it seems to be working better now, steps I've taken (in this order):
1. Flashing new modem
2. Enter fixed IP address for my home Wifi
3. At Settings->Wifi->Advanced->Leave Wifi on when enabled
Especially the last seems to have done me good. I have it working in combination with BatteryFu so it does not consume my complete battery.

Well, the AP that I had problems with is a relatively recent D-Link 802.11n router. Nevertheless, I tried connecting with an old Cisco 802.11g router, and lo and behold - connection is now stable.
So, looks like there is indeed some interoperability problems but I won't dismiss this as a "****e <X-company> router" - as the same router is working well with other clients, and moreover, was working well with this phone when it was running an older GB firmware.
My conclusion is that apparently somebody at Samsung / Google has broken the Wi-Fi drivers, interoperability-wise.

You probably mean leav wifi on when screen is off? My phone is already set this way... Anyhow, thanks, but it looks like this is a problem with a specific router as I wrote in the first part of this message.
It is quite common now that almost all of our beloved ROMs are "infected" from the well-known issue of signal dropping. The "No Service" indication appears and you're unable to make calls, send messages or use data (you're screwed in other words ). The problem seems to be appearing mostly when the battery is low (about 20% or lower)
While this problem doesn't seem to be getting solved any time soon, I would like to suggest to those who want to have a functional phone (by that I mean make calls), but still want to have a smooth Kit Kat experience, to look for older builds of their favourite ROMs. Basically all ROMs on 4.4.3, do not suffer from that issue that much. You will hardly notice it!
Me, personally I am using Liquid Smooth v3.1 2014-06-14 build, and I have never missed a call, or was unable to make one. I can also confirm that older nightlies of CM do not lose signal as well(2014-06-17 for example)!
I don't know while this particular issue hasn't be solved yet, but I bet our great developers will find a way to eliminate it eventually!

I am very grateful for your post, because I also noticed this issue and it's driving me crazy for a few weeks. I tested almost all available ROM 4.4.4 and everywhere was the same! I did so: clean install + iodak kernel v10 + about 6%/10% battery (no gapps).
When you first start, after a reboot and enter the PIN code to establish a connection with the network was easy and fast in any case. Then I use the "QUICK SETTINGS" - switch, to change
"Network mode" (2G | 3G | 2G+3G). The network was disconnected in order to connect again in a different mode. Unfortunately again, and sometimes third or fourth (at intervals of tens of seconds) could no longer connect. The worst was the last CM11-NIGHTLY: when you disconnect the network, you can not get connected network again, at 4% battery!!!
Only connect the charger meant that after a few seconds the network connection (whether of 2G or 3G) was possible.
I thought it was fault of my device.
Downgrading to 4.4.3 is a good idea. What do you think about LS-KK-v3.1-2014-07-02-p880.zip?
Is there this Signal Issues? Now, I'll test it.

I've already tested it, and it had serious signal issues.
It's funny, but after much testing, it seems to me that the solution is in "the middle of the road":
(3) - LS-KK-v3.1-2014-07-02-p880.zip - (last, no T2FS) loses connection to the network for no reason at a level below 20% of the battery, but it is able to establish connection to the network, but after a while it loses again. Sorry... disqualification.
(1) - LS-KK-v3.1-2014-06-14-p880.zip - In my opinion the disqualification too. Switch (3G/2G) in the "QUICK SETTINGS" does not switch, but only shows what is set as the "Preferred network type" in the settings. After using the "switch" network is disconnected, but again reconnect never occurs at the level of the battery 8% and below.
(2) LS-KK-v3.1-2014-06-23-p880.zip - as in (1), but the switch (2G/3G) works good, and can freely switch the connection types, up to 8% of the battery . Below this value, you will not be able to connect to any network (unless you connect the charger).
Corrigendum: after a few minutes, joined the 2G network at 5% battery. :good:
