Is there any way to "pre-download" maps for someone not on a data plan? I would love this!

You could possibly share with someone that has the maps already downloaded
Google Navigator v. 3.8
Yes, I purchased google navigator several weeks. I think it's up to version 3.8 now, which is pretty good and becoming more stable. It can be purchased here - http://www.pdafun.net/buy.htm
dealwagon,
As far as "pre-downloading" maps for offline use., that's a no go and not an option for Google Navigator. Your best bet is using Tom Tom, iGo, Garmin, etc, that uses phone's internal gps. You may want to check this out though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340667
Google Navigator 4.2
WARNING:
NO WAREZ OR WAREZ OFFERS!
THIS IS YOUR FIRST WARNING AND IVE SEEN YOU ASKING FOR V4.2
STOP ASKING/OFFERING OR I WILL BAN YOU FOR A COUPLE DAYS
4.3 is out and about and yes I have it....... Its hard to believe but.... I actually have a legitimate copy which I paid for!! My new GPS antenna for the Kaiser should be here tommorrow or Saturday. I am getting 7-8 satellites right now, but hope to improve it with a external antenna..........
I got hooked on the Google Navigator when the guy I bought the phone off of sent me a DVD with 4.3 gigs of applications on it for the Kaiser
Guys if you have to purchase this software I wouldn't mention sharing stuff on here because that might be considered warez and will get you the banhammer from the mods.
For those interested this should be avaliable in the UK "by the middle of next month"
Not sure if I'm convinced by the online nature of it, when I most need sat nav I'm often somewhere remote or abroad, still the winmo version was good
If the abroad you're planning to visit is in North America, stay far away from a Navigon product. They pulled their stand-alone units from the market here because their routing algorithms were complete ****. They have pretty maps and work well over the pond, but do not trust them to get you anywhere but lost in the States.
Just google navigon+routing+problems and you'll get the idea.
So i hear Navigon for Android is finally out. Unfortunately i don't have paid apps market here. There should be 30-day trial for that.
Navigon is way the best nav app in europe as far as i know. At least it is that way on iPhone. And i have seen them a lot.
I also have a question. How could i obtain it, if i don't have access to market.
I use Sygic Mobile Maps 9 ... Great app love this navigation.
now testing Sygic Mobile Maps 10 on the Android 2.1 roms... because version 9 is unstable and freeze under Android 2.1

Where did you get that from? Sygic appear not to have released it yet, at least not on their website
* Mod EDIT *
Removed instructions on how to obtain warez.
SORRY... forgot... Will never do it again...
@all:
Posting warez or how to obtain them is not permitted on the forum. Doing so may get you and XDA into trouble.
Regards,
whats your favorite one? And how can we try it out
I just use google maps. Works like a charm. Figured there was no sense in having multiple apps when one couple do it all. I have used htc nav, telenav, nav.

I like the Igo Motonav, but there is also about to be a Navigon release soon. Both very good, and "pretty" GUI's.
I like google maps for searching/finding locations, but when I want to navigate garmin is better for me. Anyone had any experience with the bing navi?
I use the google navigation software. Download it, then download the text to speech app, and you have a free version of the garmin/tomtom.
It does what i need, and for this price, I won't look elsewhere.
EDIT: As mentioned below - the disadvantage to Google Maps and Navigation is you need a 3G connection for updating maps and data.
I like copilot
It works well and it works even when you don't have cellular connection

I'll third this one. I've used CoPilot on WinMo, iPhone and now Android and I have to say it like it the best.
Previously I've used TomTom, Navigon, Garmin, xGPS and the Google Apps but I keep going back to CoPilot!

I like the offline cache thing too, but the map support is pretty outdated. I was in a road probably 2 minutes from my house, the name of the street shown is probably 10 years ago.
Are there any apps give turn by turn and can take external maps (like Garmin)? I don't live in an area that is supported by Copilot (or really anybody). I have found that OpenStreetMaps makes usable maps down here which I had working great with Garmin on my WinMo, but I feel like I'm kind of out of luck on Android.
quick question, are these gps nav programs crippled by the captivate gps?

Yea, I would use google navs too but the gps problem is too great, even with the fix I cant get a lock while driving. I wanted to know if 3rd party programs perhaps was better at picking up gps signal than google navs
With the current state of the gps on the sgs line of phones, I find the best navigation tools are a map, or asking for directions.

Unfortunate, but funny.
I like nav apps that store the maps on the phone since I've done a lot of driving in remote parts of Canada and the West; no cell or data in places.
I had Garmin XT on my old WinMobile phone. However the product is discontinued now.
I'm using Sygic Mobile Maps 10 and so far like it. sygic_dot_com
all you guys that say you like garmin or copilot or google nav should give ndrive a test. i used to love copilot then one of my friends introduced me to ndrive and since then i loved it!

It's nice, but is HUGE in size. Over two gigs for a map update? Ugh.

Can someone tell me what is exactly wrong with the GPS?
I live in Utah and I ve been using it without issues....just today for example I was testing the voice thingy so I said my home address and in no time the navigation was giving me directions on how to get there so reading all this about the GPS is very confusing to me.
Thanks
Hi all,
When I purged my Stock ATT apps, I forgot to backup ATT Navigator. The link to the stock app dump is broken, does anyone have a new one, or can someone post ATTNav-Samsung-Vega-1488.apk?
Thanks,
Justin

Am wondering, why people would pay to use this when google nav is out for free? Is paying for a navigator make it that much better?

For the simple line of reasoning that is, there is a sucker for everything.
that is like saying why buy bottle of water when you can get it from fountain for free!
1 thing i dont like about google navigation, when on freeway, it will says "exit 24", "exit 88". just give me the name! Exit Gold Ave, or Exit Cappy Blvd instead!
Okay so if you go to the Telenav OTA site at ota.telenav.com/tn and click T-Mobile as your carrier, then click the Vibrant 4G, it is completely compatible with the Captivate. Basic navigation is now free (including voice navigation, automatic re-routing, etc) and the full premium navigation (which includes SPEED TRAPS among traffic and all sorts of other things) is only $2.99 a month - MUCH better than paying at&t $9.99 a month and this app is much better than the stock at&t Navigator app and worlds better than Google Navigation, which quite often thinks you aren't on the right road when you're dealing with a highly populated area with lots of roads.
Also, unlike Google Nav, TeleNav will continue to work without a tower signal, it will just tell you to turn without the street name. I know this from experience when I drove from Colorado to Arizona and was driving through Hatch, NM and had no signal from Sprint or any roaming partner and still got navigation directions.
Just thought I'd post this up here. I decided to check out the OTA site and see what's up.
Also, if you download it directly from the device, it will tell you it can't recognize your device and you just hit Samsung, then Vibrant 4G.
I do not know if this works on non T-Mobile ROMs but I don't see why it wouldn't. Let me know what you guys think.
Nice find. Thank you.
Awesome find. Thank you for sharing. Will log in tomorrow from pc to vote this up and a thank you.
-couldn't wait logged into dolphin for this one. Already found atm's around me. Curious on one as it is in a neighborhood.

So far, looks great on my Cog 4 loaded Cap. (My GPS sees to work oretty well, but I have not tested it that much.)
It crashed (the entire phone) on the initial run, but I have not had problems since then.
Thanks!
Thanks for the tip. Loaded as you recommended. Curious why not identify as att?
Just checked tele nav's maps almost instant lock pinpoint on house went into google maps no lock after 30 seconds. In the nav mode also almost instant lock and immediate directions.... Will check in morning see how tracking works. Can only hope. If it works as well as the locks will have a usable gps finally.

Glad everyone is loving it! It appears that this version is ONLY for the Vibrant 4G so its kick ass that it works on our phones. I used it for navigation today because I got so pissed with Google Navigation always thinking I'm on a street that I'm not and it was FLAWLESS the entire route.
I may very well may the 2.99 a month - sure beats 9.99 a month and the lane assistance is helpful when you're traveling somewhere you haven't been before. Nothing worse than being in the wrong exit lane and ending up either almost getting in an accident changing lanes at the last minute or ending up going the wrong way and finding 5 street lights with no U-turns and ending up 15 minutes out of your way before you can turn around.
By the way, I'm running this on Firefly, which already has amazing GPS, and Google Navigation still can't track me anywhere near as well as TeleNav. On top of that, the screen can be set to be off unless you're at a turn - massive battery saver over Google Nav.
Hooray for a GPS program that works...stupid google maps...
Yeah I was trying to remember the OTA address for TN and when I was typing it in the browser, Google auto-filled the /tn for me and I figured the Vibrant 4G is pretty much a Galaxy S with HSPA+ 21Mbps, tried it, and it works fantastic.
Hehe us Captivate users should pressure the company to releasing one for the Captivate. Then again big brother AT&T might not allow them.
-Edit, tried to poke around the choices on the captivate and one link took me to the Market. Drum Roll, and displayed ATT Navigator.
Yeah, at&t navigator sucks ass compared to this version. Plus its a 6 dollar a month difference in cost or you can use it for free...
PERFECT! Also running on Firefly, locks in seconds!! Great find

Wow finally got a nav system that actually knows where i am. while all the gps fixes out there helped alot it actually seems to be a issue with google maps/nav. only thing i liked about google maps was the ability to have the map in the direction i was going . Methinks that a working nav/maps is better
once again Thanks for the info
Wow this is actually amazing!
I always wondered if google maps had issues with our phone... Maybe it actually does?

Not just our phones - Google Maps has issues with all phones because it thinks we are on streets we are not - my Evo did the same damn thing.
If I helped you guys, please remember the Thanks button - it really does a lot for credibility on the site. Thanks
Very nice find. +1 thanks
