Hey guys,
If this has been answered previously, then please forgive me, but I wasn't finding anything definitive in the related threads. I've got an unlocked Developer Edition that I plan on using on T-Mobile. I really wanted the extra space and I *believe* San Diego is refarmed and so should work reasonably well (although if I get Edge speeds I'm gonna be bummed).
Anywho, has anyone figured out whether there is:
1) any way to get WiFi calling working? Not positive I'll need but wondering if I need to flash a T-Mobile modem or rom to get that to work on the DE version
2) if tethering will work if my plan supports it (it does - I've done it on my T-Mobile Galaxy Note II)
3) does flashing one's modem cause the phone to show as "tampered" or "modified"? My preference would be NOT to add the bloat unless I'm going to lose out on the aforementioned features OR if the signal ends up being dramatically affected.
Lastly, has anyone else had any experience with the Developer Edition on T-Mobile in San Diego? Wondering what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
K-
I have the Dev One on T-Mo in Az and it's awesome. I've seen up to 24mbps on LTE and as little as 12mbps on LTE here.
I'll try tethering but I don't see why it would be an issue. My rooted Sensation tethered just fine and with a non-carrier phone we should still be more than able to do so.
Not sure about WiFi calling as I never used it. With unlimited minutes and decent reception at home it never crossed my mind to try it.
WiFi calling does work you just need to flash a ROM that has it. It has been implemented in International ROMs so you don't have to stick to just T-Mobile firmware.
Thanks for the answers, guys. Guess I stupidly figured the Developer Edition WAS the International version rom already - no? Guessing not by your phrasing.
Guess my problem when it arrives on Thursday (fingers crossed) will be that I'm not certain whether I can completely revert back to stock after flashing should I need to return it. Will do a little more research. Have flashed the hell out of my Note II but I thought I'd read that all methods on the One end up with "Tampered" being displayed, which I'm sure would cause HTC to NOT take it back, even within the 30 days.
Then it's just a question of how good or bad the data speeds end up being in San Diego.
Thanks again for the help.

Using TMO Tab with OC Kernel 2.1.6 (and bought a few six-packs for Alter to say TY for the great job!) and have been actively following the threads on the T-Mobile Modem.
Can't post in Dev section yet, so I am dropping this here in the hopes I can get an answer. There is a "bounty" offered on one thread for a modem.bin that will work with the T-Mo Tab, but so far no solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951930
For what it is worth, I am in for $50.00 on this, too, but I won't post for the sake of getting up to the required number to get on the Dev boards, so I am hoping the OP on this thread sees this and can add me.
Triplex76, at the end of the thread says he got this working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13585472&postcount=182
I have downloaded the t959 (galaxy s tmobile) modem.bin Triplex recommended, but I get the same poor result Roto reported in numerous threads - seems the signal comes and goes and this is too unstable to use.
Triplex indicated you have to have the corrrect email.apk to make this work, and I figure I do, with OC's ROM.
Can anyone else who has tried this yet weigh in? Keeping fingers crossed.
I scolded him for putting that stuff up without a complete explanation. Outside of the US some members can use a T959 vibrant modem and get voice, data, and 3g speed. But in the US it is not possible, so the bounty is out there to encourage someone to work around the T-Mo restriction. In the US we can use the Roto Switch to get those features, as two separate modem flashes. Sorry.
Thank you for the insight. Near as I can tell the modem will work well in Europe (3G and Voice there vs 2G and Voice or 3G only here). I am on an upcoming working vacation in Europe in September and need data there for maps, nav, contact with tour providers, hotels, rail, etc. Net-net very data intensive. Appreciate your clarifying the distinction. Seems ironic that my only.optimal experience will be over there unless a fix for Tmous modem comes sooner.
Now I have to find a reasonable global SIM card. Or switch my eoc Verizon to a new AT&T phone and use that SIM.

You can get T-Mobile prepaid sims in a lot of Europe. You are better off that way, to get the 3g on their unique frequency.
Question about SIM cards
Ranger -
Thanks for the advice. I just saw the latest Overcome ROM so I will be downloading and running the full install before I wrap up the night.
Meantime, I am still struggling with the SIM thing - I have a VZ phone coming off contract next month, and I am thinking of switching to an AT&T. Do you know if I can use that SIM for voice and data in the T-Mo Tab overseas (or here with the 2G Data until someone comes up with a modem )? I can get a local SIM once I am on the ground there, but I have to have access once the plane lands as I have a group of 4 of us I am responsible for managing travel for.
On an aside, I was hoping the Gingerbread release would offer some better modem options but it now seems there may never be a fix, which is too bad, because I would infinitely rather have just one device (my Tab!).
Thanks infinitely for your help and enjoy the new ROM!
@Ranger - Can you help me out again please?

I flashed Hermes, then Icarus, and the Tab Experience gets better each time! I am now able to use the modem switcher (and by changing the line to "reboot normal" in gscript, it still reboots - not bad for a noob, huh? ), but I want to use this as my primary phone, so T-Mo seems to be out.
Can I buy either the AT&T or the International TAB if I want 3G+Data and am willing to get a 3rd Party pay-go SIM (like Tru)? Thank you again for all your help!

In the US, the at&t tab is the best "everything" experience. Friends in Spain and Isreal have done what you thought - they bought a local sim equivelent to t-mobile (2100 band, without the 1700 band) and the Roto 2g modem gave them voice and 3g data with their t-mobile tab! I have not verified this, so perhaps a few members can confirm this for you.
Bottom line -- at&t tab will do everything everywhere you are traveling. T-mobile, with the switch, -- might do most of what you want. The international tab is mostly like at&t tab, it will work voice and 3g everywhere.
I have read and searched google for a while now and cant find anything recent concerning the ATT Captivate on the Tmobile network.
Some Youtube vids but they are all ancient.
The latest tread i found was dated around mid June 2013 involving Straight Talk and it did not seem to have a final resolution as to weather it's possible or not to use att's cap on Tmobile network.
Phone in question belongs to my daughter in-law and wants to have phone active for basic call use, not interested in getting new updated phone (S3 or S4) just concerned with basic calling and texting.
I have put phone thru its paces and it works fine as a 4" tablet on wifi , its running GB 2.3.5 , baseband I897UCKJ3 , kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKJ3 -CL614489 , build GB.UCKJ3.
I would appreciate any input on this from anyone that may still have a Captivate running on any pay as you go plan.
TIA.

The most basic answer is yes you can run the cappy on T-Mobile. That being said the phone will have to be unlocked in order to work on another carrier. You can either contact AT&T and ask them to give you the unlock code, find a site online that will sell you the unlock code, or find one of the many threads on here about how to do it yourself. If you do it yourself it will most likely require your phone to be rooted first. I even believe it's as simple as downloading an app from the play store and running it to unlock.
Now with all that being said if the person plans on using data at all you could run into a small problem. T-Mobile uses a different frequency for 3G/4G data than AT&T so you may only be able to connect to EDGE which is very slow compared to what you may be used to.
Thanks ml, its rooted already and looking into unlocking. Afterwards is it just a matter of slipping a tmob card into SIM slot?
Thanks again for your input, much appreciated.

Yes after its unlocked you should be able to pop the sim in and go. The only thing you might have to do is figure apn settings to make data services work. But that's not nessecary for calls and basic texting to work.

I used my Cappy last year with a Roam Mobilility, a company that sells
US airtime here in Canada for travelers. It runs on the T-mobile network. T-mobile is slowly changing their data network so you can get the H symbol when connected in larger centers. If you aren't in those areas you only get edge data speeds. Vegas, and Phoenix both had the new towers set up and I got great speeds there. The phone does work well for calls also.
Hi guys,
I've been doing research but wanted to pose this question to everyone in this forum as well.
Thinking about making the switch over to T-Mobile to test their network and see how I like it.
Unfortunately I'd have to get an HTC One capable of receiving their LTE signal so I'd have to swap phones (at least that's what I've seen online). Kind of a pain in the ass but whatever.
I just wanted anyone's opinion who has used T-Mobile in NYC/Queens and can tell me about their recent experience. I'm most concerned with building penetration which I've found to be pretty solid with Sprint (granted the data speeds suck).
For anyone who's wondering, yes I will be posting this in the T-Mobile forum as well but I wanted to start here.
Any input would really help. Love this phone but I might have to test a new network.
Thanks

I use to have TMobile and my problem with Tmobile was building penetration. Especially in Manhattan. Whenever I was in a skyscraper, many times my tmobile service would go into Emergency Service only mode. Complained about it many times with them but never got any better, had to eventually change over and I went to sprint and has been with them ever since. And I agree, Sprint's data service really needs to get better. Its just too spotty still
Hello,
So I just switched from ATT to Tmobile and now using the Tmobile service. After I put in the tmobile simcard into my unlocked N900A, I got everything from good service to 4gLTE. Now I want wifi calling feature on my N900A, So I rooted the device with towel root and installed SS (of course after SU and BUSYBOX). After I backed up my stock rom, in rom slot 1 I installed tweaked N3 3.8 but the wifi calling toggle got stuck on "enabling". I thought may be something was wrong with the flash so I flashed the tweaked N3 3.9 but it gave the same result. So I thought let me try another Tmobile rom on my ATT note 3 so I flashed the "Effortless ROM" from the tmobile section but still when I see the wifi calling toggle in the setting it is still stuck on enabling.
Is there anyway I can enable the wifi calling feature onto my ATT note 3 4.4.2 NC2.
I installed the SRX tmobile rom on my galaxy S3 and the wifi calling feature is working great.

2 things,
1.. when you flashed Tweaked, did you do the custom install.prop and edit it, and when you edited it, did you set it to att on tmo? i think that is what you might want.. if you flashed it strait from att thread, it is going to load as att and you cant do Wifi calling..
2. did you double check your APN, not 100% certain if wifi calling is effected by that, but make sure you are using tmo apn if you are with them..
side note, why the hell wouldn't you change over to the tmo note3 if you are on tmo now? unlocked BL and you can do so much more id say trade that att N3 in for the tmo one if you are able... you will probably love it so much more.

1 - I did change in the custom install.prop. I changed it to tmo on att N900a , isn't that what I am supposed to do? or other way around att on tmo as you mentioned?
2- APN was set up correctly as I was getting the 4GLTE and I double checked it and it was using tmo apn.
for the side note I actually won't mind trading my phone in for tmo note 3 but I am short on money so can't spend those extra few hundred on trading unless if I can find someone to do the straight swap as my phone is like new out of the box (not a single scratch).
Question for you,, Have you seen anyone able to enable wifi calling successfully? because I really want to use this feature as it will help me at home.
As far as I know, T-Mobile wifi calling is not supported with any AT&T plan/SIM

That sounds about right..you would need to double tap with dwith I his thread to be sure.
Yeah figured apn was fine
Can't you do their version of next program and trade in and pay nothing then just add to monthly if something you would do....personally not a fan of those plans but an option to save some or can't do the up front costs

Sorry to hear nothing came of this - and nice job on being thorough and testing some other tmobile rom options. I know it worked for people back in the Note 2 days (Non-TMo N2 with TMo service and TMo rom -> wifi calling worked), so my gut says it should be possible... but my gut is rather uninformed on such things so I dunno how good the ole gut read really is

Ya thanks for keeping this in the back of your mind. I did some research after I talked with you and saw that there are some unknown problem with safestrap and using the rom slots, And all the roms I tried including yours was on rom slot. So I am thinking of flashing the tweaked on the stock slot and see if that helps with the wifi calling. I will keep you guys posted if I find anything.
Thanks.

Any luck? I have an AT&T Note 3 as well that I'm using with a T-Mobile SIM, and I'm about to move to a building that has very poor T-Mobile coverage, and so I want to be able to use wifi calling.
If someone was willing to do a straight trade of a T-Mobile Note 3 for my AT&T one, I'd be all set, but probably hard to find that.

Sorry for the very late reply but I was away for 2 months to my home country and I had very bad internet there so didn't visit
XDA from there.
For your problem you can unlock your device either by calling att which is a free method or you can buy the unlock code from the ebay or any unlocking company, If you google it you will find plenty. And as far as I know tmobile also caps there data at 1 or 2 GB unless you have unlimited 4g LTE plan which I would think is little on the expensive side.

Ok guys here is my situation. Unfortunately I live in a rural area, I just so happen to not be able to get att interweb because all of the ports are full. I'm currently on Sat internet that is costly considering I only have 20gb of data during peak hours which is from 6am till 8pm. I am about to get rid of sat internet and sat tv, so this means I am going to need interweb to stream. I have decided since they just recently put a tmobile tower up 4 miles from my house that I would use the interweb from them on their unlimited lte. I have a Verizion LG G2/VS980 thus the reason I am asking for your help and will need assistance or rather guidance on how to use tmobile on my phone. I do understand that pretty much all phones are unlocked, so would that mean I keep verzion roms or can I use tmobile roms so that I can use wifi calling. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for what y'all do.
Ok seems I'm getting alot of views but no answers. I've gotten the test phone from tmobile and it's an iphone 5s Pfft. Anywho I've been testing the network speed mostly getting 10 down 2 up. Not that great but hey good enough for web/phone. Ok now what I need is help finding a suitable rom. Has anyone heard of such a rom that has skipped provisioning and wifi calling working that works on vs980? Also how would I go about flashing a tmobile rom, I've read that you flash a tmobile rom of your choice then flash the flex patch? Any idea's folks.
