I've noticed that while viewing something my phone sometimes changes the brightness, not drastically, but noticeable still, especially if the background is white. My auto brightness is off and I'm running stock and not rooted. I was wondering if it was something with my phone or is it normal?
Is your sleep timer set to Auto Sleep? It dims the phone automatically if you're not moving it enough. Try changing it to a set timer and see if it still does it.

Just tried it at your suggestion. I tried it for 45 seconds then a minute it still happens. The best way I can describe it is if you use blinkfeed or any rss reader that has a light theme or even a web site like this. If you see a picture, then scroll away from it like you're reading the rest of the article, it'll dim a little bit.
As mentioned above I believe this may be the HTC Ones auto screen tone adjusting similar to how you put your home HDTV color temps on Dynamic, Standard, Movie, Sports etc. The HTC One like the Samsung S3 both utilize a battery saving technology used to automatically adjust the tone of webpages and other pure white screens by conserving battery power. I would try viewing the same screen with the power save features on and off to see if there's any noticeable difference. I don't believe there is a specific setting for this technology on the settings panel in the One like there is on the S3.

Hmm, I can't get this to reproduce. The only thing I can think of is the stock web browser has a setting to dim webpages that are still loading, but I don't think that helps you any. Sorry .

I've also tried just tried what you suggested, it still happens, which is strange.
DiZzyBonne
I tried that too, tested it with Naked Browser and Opera Mini.
Still, thank you both for trying to help, I appricate it. I'm still within the couple of days to return, so I'm just going to go and see if I can get a swap for another HTC One.

No, not originally. I did turn it on, tested, then off again to see if that did anything but to no effect. Still, this won't push my away from the phone. It's a beautiful piece, I just hope the swap will fix that.

So this is what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9202470&postcount=8
and now I'm trying to figure out how to get my phone back to the way it was.
Few simple things:
i don't want the little gmail widget to tell me that i have new mail. I turned off autosync and unsynced my gmail account, but that didn't work
likewise i don't want the default messaging programs widget to pop up along with handcent, i just want handcent.
hmmm, i tried to set the wallpaper i used to have and it won't work. maybe cause i set astro as the default program to open to view the gallery? how can i unset that?
thanks!
Also, the phone screen used to dim after 25 seconds and turn off after 30 seconds. now the screen dims and brightens randomly, like as i'm typing a text message or something.
Figured out everything except the dimming/undimming
any ideas folks?
Have you checked in settings sound and display to see if power savings mode is checked? I know thay would cause what your talking about.

Thanks, but i have played with that on and off and it makes no difference
Is it related to the light sensor. Have you got his set to auto.
This feature dims and brightens the screen based on the amount of light the sensor see's which I think is the camera.

Yes! That was it, thanks guy!
Any theories on how to stop it from vibrating when I plug it in?
I bought a Tab P1010 a fortnight ago. Generally been happy with it, but I've noticed something thats begining to annoy.
Just prior to going into standby, the backlight level drops slightly before going off. That seems to be the normal way things work.
However, on mine, the level goes to that stage randomly. Touching the screen may bring it back up after 5 seconds or so, but not straight away. And it happens even when I'm scrolling the screen and there has been activity going on.
Any idea?
Or have I got a return on my hands?
do you have "auto" set on your brightness?
I find when i have brightness set to auto it can go duller or brighter seemingly at random (particularly irritating if im reading)
i mostly manage my brightness level myself
Dont know if this is related to your issue ... good luck

lol I feel such a fool!
I was fully aware of the auto back light setting and had already set it to the unchecked.
However at the weekend, I did a full factory reset. All settings had gone. However, it does show up how useless that setting is as the changes seem very random!
Cheers for the reminder.
Please, any input is useful. ):
I just bought a nexus one the other day, and i think I was scammed. THe power button works fine, but occasionally, the screen would get super dim. It doesn't black out because I can faintly see all of the icons and menus, and I can tap them. ALso, its not automatic brightness, because its horribly horribly hard to see. Pulling the battery (sometimes) fixes this problem.
I'm currently running Kang-o-rama with SP2.
Has this ever happened to anyone? If so, how did you fix it?
It does sound its the auto brightness. If you're outside and its dims it is very hard to see. You the default android power widget to test it. It has brightness toggle on it. Full /auto/dim/ and basically the middle.
I'll take a picture of it once my dad comes home, but I tested it last night if it was autobrightness.
I waited for it to dim, then went into settings, disabled autobrightness, and put the brightness all the way up. It was still super dim, and didn't return to normal until I pulled the battery.
I would look for support in the thread for that rom. Or flash another rom. Sounds like it is just a bug in your rom.
I just installed a Miui rom hoping it'll fix it (cause I was using cm7 based roms) and it worked for a while.
Now it began to Flicker and finally turned off. It'll ring when phones call it but nothing will show on the screen. I'll pull the battery but this time nothing shows up (though it vibrates indicating it turns on).
I know this is a hardware problem now, do you guys know what part it is?
Please, any input is appreciated.

I just got my Asus tf701t and, while first using it, the home and back buttons did not work in portrait mode and the screen would change brightness at varying time intervals (usually a few seconds) when the brightness was set very low. an update to 4.3 cured the back and home button issue but the screen still can't stay at one brightness level when I set it to very dim. It's not changing dramatically, more like a few percent, but enough to be distracting.
The odd part is that the dimming/brightening issue almost seems application dependent. It occurs far more often in the home screen or skout but almost never when playing shadowgun dead zone or when using naked browser.
Does anyone else have similar issues?
The only posts about flickering on other people's tf701t seem to be related to power saving and I need to know if this needs to be exchanged or if this is a common problem.

I don't have the flickering when not on auto and lowest setting.
However some apps can dimm the screen while loading.
On the TF700 the stock browser did that when loading a page but on the TF701 the brightness doesn't do that.
You have an ambient light sensor built into the device. It adjusts the brightness based on the lighting in your environment. It can't be turned off either.

It can't be turned off? So when you turn on automatic brightness it just changes the brightness more drastically? This doesn't sound right.
Based on the other poster's response, I think I need to return this unit. The screen dimming/brightening happens to often and randomly to be part of my apps and I even noticed, in some apps, that just touching the screen causes a brightness change.
Even if this is by design, it is far too distracting.

My 701 is doing this as well. Turned off auto brightness, turned off power saver, rebooted. When it comes back up the device acts like auto brightness is on, with screen brightness fluctuaating randomly. Turning power saver on and off again seems to solve it, but that behavior is very annoying - it's why I turn auto brightness off in the first place.
US SKU running 4.3 installed via ota, no root or unlock or anything - straight stock. Its also my second device, my original had a bad cable and wouldn't charge. Serial number ends in 072259.

Driving me nuts
I'm having the same problem and it's driving me nuts!
I'm quite convinced it's a software "feature" but currently there seems to be no way to turn it off?
It's one of those "Adjust brightness of the screen based on content" or "Changing LCD refresh rate and colors for power saving" but sadly it does it the wrong way around (This has been going on for a while now, manufacturers don't really get it). When there is a lot of bright content the brightness will rise and when there is mostly a dark screen it will fall.
Of course, this should happen exactly the other way around. When there is a lot of bright/white on my screen it should lower and when there is mostly black it should become brighter thus giving you more contrast but keeping the overall lux that comes off your screen the same...... My Intel graphics notebook does this too and it's very irritating. There they do it by manipulating the LCD screen and lowering the refresh rate and other tricks to save battery. First thing I turned off.
However way it goes though, you should be able to turn it off!

I'm having the same issue. I think it's the smart dimmer option Asus have used before but they forgot to include it in the Asus customised options. I'll have a dig through the ROM to see where it is stored.
I'm having this problem as well.
I have my brightness set to about 80%, Auto-Brightness Off, Power Save Off.
It is very annoying when reading magazines that have a lot of white background. My screen will be stable for minutes then, often on a touch, will change the screen brightness, seemingly by 5-20%.
I was just getting ready to return it, and thought I would check here to see of anyone else has this problem. Has any actually called Asus with this complaint? I would be interested to know if they see this as a hardware defect, software bug, or working as designed.
PS - I just placed a technical support request about this on the Asus Website. Here is my problem description:
Even with automatic brightness & power saving turned off, the brightness of the screen will change over time, often seemingly in response to a touch. (Reading Mode is Off as well.)
The period between changes can vary from several minutes to 30 seconds. It happens both while docked and undocked. It happens with apps and just at the launcher.
The amount of brightness change is 5-20% and it will often seem to step through some values before it stops at a particular one.
Given how fantastic looking the screen is, this unwanted fluctuation is particularly annoying.
I also own a TF201 and have not experienced this problem on that product.

Yep me too and as soon as I root I'm going to see if the same fix will turn it off
There seems to be no way to disable this. Some believe it's the light sensor, but I've taped over mine with black electrical tape and tested and I don't see any difference in the behavior. Check our my Youtube video if you are a user who doesn't see the issue (look for threads in this same XDA forum).
I've finally been able to get someone at Asus to look into this and it's been sent to TW for review. I haven't heard anything back yet. I strongly recommend that other people who are annoyed by this (I find it tremendously distracting) to search on "asus escalation" which will bring up a special mailbox. Here is the link (although I do not know if the link will work for you). This should get looked at by someone with at least some ability beyond reading a script. If enough people do this, I think that they will fix it. Since you can temporarily override it by toggling smart saver on/off, it has to be fixable by software.

Is anyone having any trouble with setting screen mode to vivid?
When I switch to vivid, the entire screen becomes very orange, to a degree that something is clearly wrong. It looks like the blue light filter is turned on, even though it isn't. And turning on the blue light filter makes it much worse. It's like there is a single application of blue light filter permanently active, and then a full second layer being added when actually turning the blue light filter on.
This is coming from someone who generally runs Warm1 or Warm2 settings on my TVs and monitors. This isn't just a warm white, this is distinctly orange. Changing back to natural brings the white levels back to a normal level that I would say is pretty neutral, if not slightly warm.
When set to vivid, changing the white balance between warm and cool does almost nothing; the change is so subtle that you have to actually flip back and forth several times to notice it. And changing the RGB in advanced settings does absolutely nothing.
A couple other facts to note:
- I do not have any type of screen protector; the one that was on the phone out-of-the-box has been removed.
- This isn't just related to the angle at which I am viewing the phone; it is consistently orange from every possible angle.
- Blue light filter, night mode, and adaptive brightness are all turned off.
Is anyone else experiencing this, or is it just on my end? I have restarted the phone several times. I would really like to avoid a factory reset if possible.
i find mine to be more warm in natural mode however is been known that the screens on the S10 are much warmer than s9/n9 due to the reduction in blue light
if in vivid mode - please access the manual setup maybe the red is setup to max or something
Check that you do not have night light also selected in the drop down settings, as the s10 already has blue light filter reduction.
Mine was like that originally. Had to install Play Books and then turn off it's version of night mode. Seems that even though I didn't install it on this phone, it's night mode somehow still carried over.

As I said in my post, it doesn't matter what I set the RGB values to, they make no difference. And the whites look just fine in Natural mode, so it's not the screen, it's a software issue.

As I already said in my post, the blue light filter is turned off. It's off in the quick settings and off in the actual settings. I can turn it on and it doubles the problem; turning it back off returns to the normal problem.

I've never used Play Books before. Installed it just now and there's no night mode in it.
So it looks like the bug is tied to setting a schedule for the blue light filter. This morning the overly orange effect was gone. It seems likely that the setting somehow carried over from my previous phone and stayed separate from the one on this phone. Unfortunately, this probably means I will need to factory reset because there is no way of accessing this second schedule.
I won't be the only person that has carried over data from a previous phone and used a scheduled blue light filter. I hope Samsung fixes this in an update so that others don't have to deal with it.
In Play Books, open any free book and click on
then disable the schedule and hit turn it off now if it's on
Edit: screenshots aren't showing up for some reason. Anyway open any free book, tap in the middle of the page to bring up the menu bar at the top, tap on "Aa" and then night light settings. Set the schedule to "None" and hit end now if your screen is currently orange.
My wife has never installed Play Books, and that still fixed it for her.

Good to know, thanks. If the issue comes back again tonight, I will try this.
I think there is some hidden night mode in android which Play Books ties into. My wife's old Pixel had a night mode setting in the settings app which she had set up, and the new S10 night mode looks entirely different. Think copying settings and accounts over brought the hidden night mode settings over, and Play Books is just the easiest way to access that hidden setting.
The Play Books trick worked. Thanks guys!
Exactly like @lightmastertech said, the vanilla Android night mode settings are hidden but still active, and it carried over from my Pixel 3. Play Books allowed me to access this menu (odd that it's still there, 100% intact) and disable it.

Nevermind.. the playbook trick worked. I came from a pixel and had the blue light setting turned on much earlier than my s10+. Thanks @lightmastertech @Sevael
Wow, just wow. Ran into this tonight for the first time because I wanted to try out the Vivid colour mode. What an amateur oversight by Samsung to not prevent the stock night mode from running. For those that want to have access to this setting without Play Books, you can use Quick Shortcut Maker and just search for Night Light, then launch the returned result. It will put you right into the stock Night Light mode.

Can you now change the color temperature after play book trick? I cannot still change it.
I just had to bump this because of the absolute cavalcade of potential issues that can cause the screen to appear tinted. I've googled this for almost a year now after only noticing the yellowing of my screen when in Google photos. Then the random tinting was happening at sunset and every forum pointed to blue light, vivid setting, night modes etc... To find this elusive setting in play books of all places, to fix an issue that's plagued me through my last 3 devices, to the note 10 I'm on now, and it's finally fixed. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
I have only just bought an S10, and I have the same issue as OP. I have installed play books and followed instructions on this thread, but can't find in on play books night light settings set the "schedule" to "none" and hit end now.
Thank you so much ! Same happened to my FOLD - You solved it for me !
