Alright, let me start off by saying I don't think it's an ordinary crack. I was walking down the street when I tripped and my phone landed on grass and dirt. I thought to myself "Woah, that was lucky, at least it wasn't the cement." I pick it up to find a hairline crack running almost completelty veritcal up and down the screen. (I attached the picture below). So now I'm wondering what are my options. Could I go through insurance? Should I just wait it out?

Sorry man.... you might have to use your insurance.
Best thing you can do is take it to a sprint store and try to talk them into giving you a new one if not.
The crack looks weird, but at first glance I would say there was something it hit in the center that caused it to crack so badly... but then again you could fight it both ways in saying the glass was too tightly compressed?

Yeah. Oh well, I might just save the trouble and go through insurance.
IF you wait, use a screen protector to avoid more cracks and the screen from breaking to pieces.

For future reference, how well does a screen protector actually protect against fall damage? I'ms usually pro case and anti screen protector (when i dropped it though, I had neither)

Ive actually dropped my past phones on corners of the table and they didnt crack as easy because the film keeps the glass together to help the glass stay in one piece and spreads the impact. Where as without one your screen is more prone to crack easier

Yeah I'm not too sure what that is all about. The lady said that they would call back within 24 hours to give instructions. Some type of written approval? I don't know, I was really confused by what she meant. She said because the phone is so new, they're taking extra pre-cautions.
Alright so just a quick update. It took about a week but I finally received a replacement One. It looked new in box with all the accessories which I was surprised about. So yay.

Thanks for the update.
I've had to fill out the form before. Twice, exactly. At least they don't ask for a police report when you lose it.
Though you had a cracked screen.
This time around, remember to place a cover on it, if not at least a screen protector.
Enjoy the One.
wow, that sucks.
i guess i cant put any faith into gorilla glass 2.0 or whatever it is now.

Because the phone is so new they dont have refurbs yet. So if you go through insurance you will probably get a new 1 until they have refurbs.

now my concern is whether or not ATT will take it back.. i am so upset.. i paid 200 for this phone. i did not want to put a cover over it because of the look & style of phone. and oh yea its rooted!
That's either a strange defect or you carry sandpaper in your pocket.
Either way bum deal sorry to hear about it

Buy a clear case if you still want to keep the style. If you want to try warranty and claim it a defect, go ahead. Rooting and unlocking the bootloader will not deny you warranty for physical problems like yours.

I really hope you're not just trolling. If not I apologize but I just can't buy that all of that is from a few days use. I've been on my Vivid with no case for almost a couple weeks now and don't show anything remotely close to that. What are setting it down on? Or what else do you have in your pockets?

Maybe start using some hand lotion?
Give the guy a break. I've had the phone since release day and have the same issue. In fact, my phone already had one faded spot on the battery cover when I pulled it out of the box brand new.
also another thing i keep noticing and its bothering me for some reason.. when phone is on or lit.. wenever i tilt the phone down or sideways and look at the edges of lcd i can see white line running across i don't know if that's normal part of the lcd or not..

I'm not trying to give him a hard time. Just having a hard time believing that it's only from a few days of use pulling in and out of pocket. My usage is the same and do not even see a hint of it. Maybe a bad batch of Vivids went out? Even so, I'd take it back and exchange it.

I think that's probably back light bleed you're seeing. It's common on most LCD displays.
will it eventually spread? is it common with all Vivids?? can anyone else notice it?

Mine has a little fading, but thats just because I decided to slide it over to someone (numerous times back n forth) while not in the right of mind... But mines not nearly that bad.

That's just the back light lighting up the edge of the glass. No, it won't spread.
On a side note, it seems like you're trying to talk yourself into getting rid of it anyways, no?
I had the same thing happen to me about a week after I got my Vivid. I had no idea what it was, I assumed it occurred from when I dropped the phone once.
Do you have granite lining your pockets? I can't even fathom how this would happen. I have a white Vivid, so the paint could be different, but I have had a lot of phones and never used a case on any of them and I have yet to even scratch one. The closest I ever came to the kind of damage you're showing is when I used to slide a Blackberry curve in and out of a plastic clip holster numerous times/day. I can't fathom how jean pockets can do this to a phone.

I saw this on my phone too yesterday, but it doesn't appear when the screen is off so I think it must be back light bleed. I freaked out a little at first, thinking something was defective inside the screen!

Me too, brother, though it was the best $600 I've spent in a long time. Way happier with this phone than my iPhone 4s and most of the other Android phones I have had.
I had my Nexus 4 wrapped in plastic pretty much all day yesterday. Only in the evening I had taken it off. It had no contact with anything that might cause the scratches. This morning I found it had 3 nasty scratches on the screen. How that is possible - I have no idea. The phone was not dropped nor abused!
Maybe the phone you got was in a bad batch, I doubt it's covered by warranty.
So the Gorilla Glass is weak because you have no idea what happened?
Scratches are not caused by thin air friction like you seem to imply. Pocket with keys or change, something that shouldn't have grinded on it did. Please tell us something more convincing than "it was sitting there with the plastic on".
Its gorilla glass 2.. the exact same thing as about 50% of the phones on the market and your is scratched by air?

No pockets with change, had it empty specifically, plus had plastic wrap at all times. At home I had it charging either on the wooden table or the chair - Wood scratched the class?
The phone was face-down on both.

Sabotage from someone.
Time for a screen protector then. They can do a decent job of concealing scratches for you.

Angry cat maybe? Are you ignoring your pets due to playing on your phone?
Tiny grains of sand can easily scratch gorilla glass. Easier than keys or coins.
They are not visible unless I use flash. Right bottom corner, two are in X shape and one near the edge.

Maybe it's your good looks. Be lucky it didn't shatter. In the future, take more care of it. I've owned nearly a dozen devices and have never had problems except for the time I let a friend use the stylus on the phone and pressed way too hard.

I've owned a lot of devices myself, never had a single scratch on them. This is the first time, I cant even think of what have I done to this phone to get scratches like that.
Now that you've owned the device for a few months, is the aluminium back full of scratches?
I am thinking of going naked, but haven't got the courage to do it. I don't drop my phones, so it's just scratches I'm concerned about.
And no, I don't want to install wet-application skins like Best Skins Ever, Zagg, etc. The reason being the One has gaps on the back where the white plastic lines are. I know they advertise Zero Gap, but it's not water-proof. The phone might be fine after the installation but who knows if the liquid indicator has turned pink inside.

Whoa! No clue what you've done, but I've had mine for over a month, never in a case and it still looks new. I'm actually impressed!
Like all things, if you take care of your products it will last a long time, if you're careless, of course you will see scratches and so forth.

Yeah me too! I ordered that HTC red and grey case but its on back order. Ive had my phone for about a month now and have had a few light drops down my bedside, and have put it in my pockets pocket's with keys on accidents and honestly, I am very very impressed.
Oh yeah! I just remembered it fell out of my pocket in the car and slid under the seat, twice. I thought for sure I would see some damage but not a chance!
I do however have the slightest stratch that you can see if held in the very right light. I also have a tiny tiny blemish. I'll post pictures for you.
I have intentionally not babied my phone and I must say I'm impressed.
Pictures to come.

it fell off my pocket and landed on my concrete driveway from 2 feet..i was cleaning the rims of my car
Dropped mine on a concrete floor face flat down from about a bit higher than knee height. Only got a very small dent on the chamfer.
My black One looks the same after a month. If I clean it a little bit it already looks like it comes right out the box.

Had mine since it was released, was using the double dip flip case. Some bits got under the plastic holster and there are 5 small black marks on the back.

It still looks like brand new!
Mine has some minor scuff marks on the aluminium from 2 drops from 1 meter onto stone slabs, and one drop from table onto a wooden floor. It's a slippery phone so I should have it in a case, but it looks far too good for any case.
Someone handed me an HTC One the other day at an outdoor barbecue.
After awhile I realized what they we trying to politely tell me as they were handing it to me.
It was mine.
No idea how it slipped out of my pocket.
No idea what orientation it was in when they found it lying in the ground.
All I know is after closely inspecting it for a few minutes I finally located a small blemish on the bottom right rear corner. It took quite a while to find it in very good light. No internal damage that I can tell.
And I'm *still* never going to put a case on this thing. It's like a jewel. It gives me pleasure every time I pick it up.
If I destroy it in two months, it will have given me $650 in pleasure just from holding it. If I had it in a case it could never give me a penny's worth of tactile gratification no matter how long I used it.

+1. I completely love the look and feel of this phone. A case is just sacrilege.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Ive had my HTC One for a month or so now and i use a the official HTC flip case and screen protectors and all i can say its worth doing. I learnt my lesson from my previous phones that i didn't think of putting a case on and they look like crap now. so the first thing i do is buy a case and screen protectors plus im not the most careful of people so this just adds peace of mind.
As careful as I am, I still end up dropping the phone now and then. Usually a very small drop, but still something I grimace at.
I've had this phone since the middle of May; not a long time. As time goes on, I will care less and less about the micro scratches that would inevitably happen when using the phone naked. At the moment, however, I'm still admiring how sexy the Black is. At the moment, I'm still hesitant to use it out of it's case.
Maybe after a year I will be ready.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Mine still mint, more or less... my son knocked it off an end table IN A CASE and the case knicked the top and bottom slightly on the edge. Go figure........
Now I only use a case at work because it slides on its back on my desk and that will wreck havoc on the back of the phone with scratches.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
If there is a clear skin I can put on the back that fits exactly, I would consider going naked.
I noticed two scratches on the top speaker cover today. They're from my case
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Its been about 2 months now for me and it's never seen a case or screen protector. I, like many others here, think it would be shame to cover up this phone and I can't stand the way screen protectors feel and collect dirt/scratches like immediately.
Absolutely no damage on mine, not even on the chamfers. I've dropped it 3 or so times, once on hardwood, never on concrete fortunately From the various posts I've read on XDA the consensus seems to be that it's a very robust phone with a lot of people dropping it without damage.
When I get paid from my new job I'm gonna take off this cheap light rubberised case and get a UAG case and a Steinheil screen protector, I've seen countless story's on xda with people who didn't have protection on their phone dropped it and it smashed it's just not worth the risk after paying all that money.
My two cents anyway.

I got mine by the end of April. Never had a case on it and I'm in love how it feels at touch. I'm always very careful with this beauty but this morning the alarm rang and I think you already know what happened. :crying: it has a small crack on the right corner crossing the home button all the way to the right edge. I was always against cases other protective covers for this device but now I feel so sorry.
suggestion: if you still have your phone intact just by a freaking insurance or ..a case.

Z1 isn't hard to replace the screen. Did for mine with no issues. Check witrigs.com for instructions and all the needed parts.

i'm shocking because of that! i dont know. maybe there are some weak points or that was quite a bad bad bad luck
but i think a screen guard ( which i removed 3days ago) could protect it a little bit better.maybe It wouldn't break if the screen guard was installed.by the way , I was expecting the touch to stand working but now my z1 is useless totally! keeps yours safe and try using a front covered case.

man the problem is money ! in Iran these parts are totally expensive (about 250 US$) just for screen!which 1$ is 3000Tomans and i just earn 600,000Tomans each month
but thanks for noticing. I may one day try to replace it by my own!
It's just bad luck m8, I feel for you but the fact of the matter is the devices now cracked and it'd be impossible to convince Sony or your provider of how it happened and to get a sympathetic ear, looks to me like you'll have to either fix it yourself or claim on insurance.
Did you insure it? How old is it if not? You may be able to add insurance on from your provider, I know EE in the UK offer this service at any time.
It's actually Dragontrail glass. But both Gorilla and Dragontrail are NOT unbreakable: they are harder, so they are less likely to scratch, but that makes them more prone to break. Diamonds, for example, are the hardest material known; but they break/chip very easily. Our phones are like that, if there's a light impact on the wrong angle the screen will shatter easily.

who said Z1 using gorilla glass 3 dude?
check THIS out !!
see under Protection: Shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass there's no one said Z1 using gorilla glass eve in worldwide
that doesn't mean that Z1's screen unbreakable! but just scratchless, hope this helpful for you.... next time see detail specs and consider carefully before bought something

The Z1 scratches quite easily. My S4 remained pristine after over a year of use, so did my Galaxy Note. This scratched within a month and continues to get minor scratches over time.
I hear you with the scratches, i've had cases on my phone since day one and there are scratches on the back of the phone, it's never been without a case and i take very good care of my devices, the front and back now have Zagg shields on them so they're ok now but yea it does scratch very easily, especially the back.
Its breakable anyhow.
It's quite breakable as far as i noticed, and also scratcahble All tested and failed..

By the way, the touch screen is too expensive like 200 euros..
It's realy looks like i gonna sell it out soon..
I was walking to my car today and dropped my phone...It landed flat on the screen. Picked it up and it had about 5 pretty bad scratches on it, but when I got home I took the stock screen protector off and it looks brand new now.

That can be only coincidence. Have you ever noticed or heard that it's getting scracthed while all protecters on ?
Wonder why they produce so expensive mobiles that breaks so easly... I think we are the lazy consumers who don't search enough
It's all about luck chaps, i've dropped a phone from the top of a cupboard which is around 9 feet up onto slate, one single dent nothing else and yet i've seen someone drop the same phone from less than 2 feet and the whole screen has smashed ? Not worth trying to figure out, once that phones in free fall it's simply a case of luck.
Oh i forgot, we also threw a 9320 blackberry down some stairs, concrete covered with lino, around 50 steps. Some bumps and bruises but no cracks
In my phone too
by the way since i dont have enough money to buy a new phone ( z1 or z2 or any other new phones) I decided to repair it  and planning for the z3 . beacuase in Iran there is no insurance for phones ( just for HTC ) and no warranty and even if I had the bootloader is unlocked so its voided . the only concern here is for replacement cares. most of repairers dont care enough so you will see the repair marks on body.
one question , the new lcd even the original one (which i want to use) has the same quality ? does it fit on body completely? the colors? every thing is the same?
I think so
This really stinks a 2ft drop to ceramic tile flooring and it must have hit just right. I have never broken a phone yet and now my week and a half phone is damaged. The funny thing is my case is coming in the mail today! I'm not blaming the phone, just my bad luck!!

Did you buy it with a credit card? If so you may be able to make a claim.
No, best buy gift card. At least I got the $200 off at purchase. I have the AT&T insurance so it will be like I paid full price. Lol!

I would blame your phone, my 2 week old Galaxy Note 4 has a nice big scratch down it despite not being put near anything significant (like a set of keys in my pocket, etc). Hardly very scratch resistant so i imagine not drop resistant either in real life situations. They should try and find a better material than Gorilla glass.
I wonder if this screen is replaceable? just the front bit of course, which seems like what you need as well.
Ouch!!!
With every new Samsung flagship here at XDA there always seems to be that ONE unlucky guy who manages to break their display within the month of release, same happened early last year with the S4 I remember, the thread is still going last I checked.
I'd be so gutted, even though I have insurance, I'd be just so done. The good thing is that Samsung do a thorough job with repairs. My S4 had a display issue, took it to Samsung, got fixed in a day and came with a whole new front panel fitted, phone looked brand spanking new.
Sucks to hear... I am glad they opened a Samsung repair center about a 30 minute drive from where I live for times like this...

There is a much more scratch resistant material, in fact impossible to scratch with anything softer than a diamond. Its called sapphire crystal, and my watch has it. Its a truly amazing material, but apparently too expensive to make a 5.7in screen from it.

If you are going to go this route, make sure you opt for the high quality OEM glass. Its usually around 10 bucks and many hong kong sellers have it. You can tell because it usually has a red tag on it in the pictures. Stay away from 3 dollar glass. It will just break very easily and waste all of your hard work.
its hurt to see a falling Note4 <3 best of luck next time mate
