Nothing to see here. Move along - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
First of all, allow me to indroduce myself. My name is Michael, and I have made some contributions to the XDA scene two years ago in the Xperia Mini Pro forums. I ported HTC Sense and Cyanogenmod 7 to that device and was the first to start the real development for that device.
With that said, I have retired for two years and have lost track of the developments. Anyway, on to my question:
Is it possible to port the HTC DNA / Butterfly J rom over to the Xperia Z?
Looking at the specifications, both devices feature a Qualcomm S4 Pro chipset, and a Adreno 320 GPU, empowering a screen with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels.
Technically, this was the requirement to port a HTC Sense rom back in the days, a matching CPU, GPU and screen size. I do not know if this has changed.
My main reason for this question is that, if we can get the HTC DNA rom booting on the Xperia Z, we could also get the ported HTC One for the HTC DNA rom working on our phone, and enjoy Sense 5 (Minus Zoë)
I am looking forward to a reply from any skilled developer!

this indeed looks very interesting
if i recall correctly sense has been ported to several devices like the gnex and S2
i wouldnt mind trying sense on my xperia z :3

Hey, good to see someone from the past
I already have the device, but porting is a pain in the you know what.
(Sense is not as easy to port anymore, + I have zero experience in kernel modifications.)

Having sense would be great.
Hope you can do it.
I can help for tests if you want

First of all, thanks for the thread. I have already tried a similar approach, but the problem is that HTC Sense 5 will not boot with these minor modifications to the kernel. I have to make more advanced customizations, of which I do not have the knowledge yet. I will try to contact the developer of the port for the Sony Xperia Arc, and it's fingers crossed that he'll be willing to help me out

i need an advice :)

planed for september but what should i buy : s3 or one x ???? thanks
If you look at the specs, the htc one x has a nvidia processor, wich seems better than the quallcom, but I should go for the s3, easier with rooting and flashing !

I've seen the S3 in action and you'll love the thiness of the best device around!!!
Touchwiz looks awesome (yes better than usual) but sense still destroys it.
Also the features on the s3 like s-voice, s-suggest and the feature to take a screenshot by swiping your hand across the screen, etc are pretty amazing. It also has so many people dedicated to supporting it (rooting, flashing, etc). And gaming is great due to the quad-core mali-400 gpu.
Also the phone is smooth even with a low amount of RAM available.
SO theres my opinions hope you dont regret the choice you make.
-Regards Famzz
Thanks ... now I have a i9000 and I think I'll get my s3 because it is easier to root and setup as you said !!! thanks again
Yeah, as a wanna be dev, I will never support HTC until they stop locking boot loaders and locking nand. Stick with sammy, they like their dev community

go for s3 it is likely to get custom roms more than one x

I agreed,I like to flash different Rom to find out different.
So I prefer Samsung, for me maybe I will buy SGS2 32g this year.
Id say S3 because easier to root and i think mor devs will be working on it compared to HTC
I've had both. S3. I sold my One X for the S3.

Welcome Fellow Desire C users

Hi and welcome
Any users that wanna say hi, introduce yourself and give a little history of devices/experience etc your more than welcome.
This forum has been long over due, maybe we can attract some new devs now and get some more development going
big thanks to everyone who made this forum possible:thumbup:
Came from the wildfire s, great little phone had s-off which was cool, some great devs and roms etc.
Got the desire c not long after release, one for my son, one for my woman and one for myself.
Great little phone, good price sim free unbranded, does all I want it to
Last week got my upgrade from tmobile uk, they gave me a oneX with an amazing deal, as I wanted to leave and they wanted me to stay
Some cyanogenmod development would take the desire c to another level
Your a lucky guy, I dream I got one not long ago.
Everybody, if you have the choise buy this phone. It's just amazing Only the screen is a little bit small, but it's a cool phone. My first HTC and I won't buy other phones now, only HTC
My phone history is somewhat... erm.. erratic... Love cracking Phones open and have begun writing guides on how to do things... but been an android fanatic for almost 3 years
Had the following;
SE Xperia x10
HTC Desire HD,
HTC Sensation x 2
Samsung Galaxy SII x 2
SE Xperia Play
HTC Evo 3D
Samsung Galaxy Note x 2
Samsung Galaxy Note II x 2
HTC Desire C (Current - To Tide Me Over)
HTC One X
LG Optimus 3D
Motorola Xoom 32GB 3G
Nexus 7 16GB Wifi
HTC Flyer 32GB 3G
As you can see TONS , and ive learnt lots, however i want to start cooking Roms soon as i understand the android Eco Environment quite well
Damn mate, you could open a museum
Before my wildfire s, I was a big Nokia supporter, having nearly every model since the 3210, then symbian was sinking fast so I jumped off my 5800 and never looked back, although if they made an android device I would be tempted.
Anyway nice to have you here mate:thumbup:

Are you the moderator?
I had a LG Rumour 2, than a LG Xenon, than my first Android smartphone the HTC Wildfire S and now I have the Desire C. I'm not really into to making custiom ROMS or kernels to OC the device, but will try my best to support ROMS as I go. I'm running Nameless v5.0.0 on my Desire C

HTC wildfire( sold on mazuma, although survived the washing machine )
HTC sensation( no longer in my possession due to unfortunate circumstances )
DJC touchpad 2 (pretty crap...)
Other crappy phones..
HTC desire C running explosion Rom by seanny... Switch to my Stock NFC Rom when needed.
Been flashing roms since I was 13, love android, love my desire C but love my mums one s even more I prefer bigger screened phones so after having a sensation, the feeling of going to a desire c wasn't as sensational....

This is my first android, so I won't be able to help the community much, just with issues and solutions a user can come up with.
Been looking for a cellphone upgrade for the last year or two, and I picked this phone since it resembles my old HTC size and texture.
During my teenage years got Nokia's between 3310 and 6100 (s40) to 6630 (s60), and later moved to the WM camp with the HTC Touch. Really liked the phone and thanks to xda was able to upgrade from WM6 to 6.5 that extended the life of the phone way more than I expected (5 years but this is due to other circumstances as well... also can't remember my old xda account... )
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE !!!!
have a great holiday:beer:
Maybe Santa will bring desire c's to many more users and many more devs will flock to our forum
merry x-mas guys have a blast:highfive:
This is my first android as well. Although I've had this phone for quite a while. I've been off and on nameless and explos!on ROMs because I can't chose which one is better although I've never tryed slim sense or the famously incompleted, cm9.

My first ever android device was a htc wildfire, man was that thing bad, but i did learn alot about roms and kernels etc...
My second device was a sony ericsson xperia x8, which was a really nice phone and had alot of cool themes, roms and stuff going on.
then i got the first htc desire, which i loved because it was fast and wasn't too big and due to it basically being the same as a nexus one the development was so awesome
Now i have my desire C which is a good little, phone and as others say it does what i want it too. But however, if some cyanogenmod development on this device came along it would be so much faster and smoother than with sense for certain.
See i now no longer have this device, it was a stand in for me, but its a cute device.
Back to my trusty Note II .
Id be happy to continue trying to develop for it ha

[Q] Are you happy with your phone?

I am about to order a new phone in next couple days and still thinking between Xperia and GS3. I know there is new generation of both coming soon, but I would upgrade anyway at the end of the year.
1. How is performance?
2. Signal quality?
3. Build quality?
4. Rom development?
Thanks for all your input!

All of the above are true but if you want to get custom roms make sure that the bootloader can be unlocked!

Carrier-branded phones usually cannot be unlocked officially thru Sony's dev site. Get it from retail store and it's unlockable easily.
Tapatalked from my TX
1. How is performance?
Using wifi connection at home I do not find using the phone slow compared to a i5 desktop, so I would say great.
2. Signal quality?
Similar to my work BB Bold
3. Build quality?
Good, but I have not pressed the (power) button(s) lots as the phone is new, so usage is still low
4. Rom development?
I have nothing to compare it to, but the chaps here are all knowledgagable and Greg maintains a useful thread with links to many ROMs
I could get the s3 £100 over 2 years and maybe I would go for that (got this phone last week, and the s3 offer came on the w/e). But now I am happy putting that money towards the next upgrade.
Also this phone is a bit smaller, which is good.
Thanks to all, seems owners are quite happy with it which matters the most. I have seen some unfavorable reviews on the net, so that was a biggest issue for me. The only thing about this phone might be that the development seems a bit slow. I am used to switching between stock/cm/miui roms and first and last are not updated that often (we are still waiting for Sony's JB and MIUI is outdated at this stage), and generally the development thread seems not to be very active.
I switched from s3 to TX a few days ago. Sony's interface is fantastic and is 100x better than Samsung's touchwiz.
A minimal amount of bloatware and is very close to vanilla android IMO, anyone agree with me?
Development of cm in s3 with exynos are suffering many issues due to Samsung not providing sources to developers.
I don't like the jump from ics to jelly bean in s3, it seems like Samsung can't implement buttery smooth ui and just kept adding bloatware. Even galaxy nexus ui is faster than s3. Although multi window is nice.
Build quality is definitely better on Sony and TX feels like a premium while s3 got too much plastic.

Yeah, also the exynos exploit which a simple apk can root which was discovered by xda poster. Basically, there's no support for exynos devices but US s3 is fine since it uses Qualcomm chip.
Slow update by Sony is worth it I'm sure. Not some fast update by Samsung and HTC but crippled os and can't implement jelly bean properly IMO. Ics is fine also in Xperia and satisfied with it much faster than touchwiz lol
You should properly get a T if you want more development but for sure TX will get cm10 also.

It is brilliant, so brilliant that I moved to this from my Nexus 4. Sony UI is something I can live with for a very long time due to everything being minimalistic and close to stock but better than stock in every way. If I wanted better development I would move back to Nexus 4 in a heart beat but I don't think I will ever go back to Nexus.

I agree
Its so bad that this device hasnt got the attention it deserves. I have pm krabbapel and he said he was going to make his carbon rom in the future, and doomlord said he didnt have the device so he wont be developing for it
FXP are already developing an CM rom for the ZR so this is a good start
I do agree even though SONY has its flagship Z1 Z and Z ultra, this is the sleeping giant workhorse that they need to highlight.

Same here, I came from a Galaxy Nexus (Nexus S, Nexus One, and HTC G1 before that) and although I prefer stock Android, it lacks so many features. I found Sony's UI clean and refreshing without trying too hard. I haven't found a need to root this baby yet. My ZR on 4.1 does way more than my GNexus on 4.3 (minus the root features of course) out of the box. The small apps and killer camera are the icing on the cake. With that said, I like Sony's design and UI that I'm willing to upgrade my nexus 7 to an Xperia Tablet Z in the near future.

It might be a long shot, but it was successfully done with the Oppo find 5 and the Faux Kernal...(I think!)
What they did was organise a donation fund to get Faux the phone...after that he was happy to develop his kernal for the phone.
Perhaps you could give Doomlord a poke to see if he would be willing to accept such a thing and then ask the ZR community to take part? (Or maybe ask the ZR people first to see if they would do it...then see if Doomlord would accept...)
Random idea, could work...

xperia sp forum members donated funds to doomlord, and he developed for xSP maybe you could ask him first if he's on to the idea
+1.
Nice idea for our future.
I remember DoomLord replied that he probably won't be developing for XZR since he doesn't own the device.
Not sure if donation can help that though...
with such good specs at a low price i dont get why this is a low activity device...:crying:
yeah.. i think we can blame sony itself for this problem... I really like the ZR and I have it now.. been so satisfied with it... but, yeah, too few development.. and it will get only worst because sony will be launching the z1 mini.. which is really comparable to the zr... sony is trying to follow samsung - flooding the market with too many models that are closely similar to one another..
if someone heads up a donation box for Doomlord for him to buy the zr, I would gladly donate 50 dollars...

its not available everywhere, if this continues (very few users and low development) the device will end up like the acro S look at the Acro S forums+ the fact that almost no RC or RD or RT are present in XZR forum makes it more likely that development will die after fxp supports ends

there's 4 page development on Acro S! It's not much but still for a phone that expensive yet doesn't seem to have any great hardware it's quite much developments!
but for this phone that runs smoothly and better comparing to Xperia Z, ZL and has less size and less resolution (about 1/4 times which makes battery run double times) and less mass I think this device get fairly low attention comparing to others!! even for a developer this one must be much more exciting than Xperia Z!

sort of, however, sony priced the zr as if a flagship. truth to be told, it's marketed as a flagship in japan (xperia a), and it's no slug. still, with the relatively small price difference between z and zr, it's easy to see why people will get the z instead. the z is also released 6 month earlier.
besides, zr isn't released in as many markets as z.
as i've said before, since zr shares much with z, as long as development for z is there, zr will likely be supported as well, but without a dedicated dev using zr him/herself, it's hard to picture a very good development environment.
unless sony discount the zr significantly very soon. this is likely to continue.
(before you ask, japanese seem to have their own commnity and aren't participating in xda, so their large nos. mean nothing to us)
Why worry.. as long as there is Z development, we can port almost EVERYTHING to ZR (including ROM's an Kernels)
One more reason is that people who do contribute are not thanked properly I think.
totally agree
well i had a few devices before and now i have htc one s S4, galaxy s4, xperia ZR, iphone 5
before xperia ZR between all of my phone i would stand and say htc one s and iphone 5 have best batteries between my devices, between xperia x8, xperia acro S, Xperia go, xperia V, galaxy S3, iphone 5, galaxy s4, but now i can say ZR beat my one S battery and not only on battery it beats the battery on my one s it beats the performance of S4 it beats the options of all of my previous xperia phones, and when it comes to heat it even beats the hell out of my iphone too it hardly produce any heat in my hands specially compared to xperia V and galaxy s4.
this is an amazing device guys no doubt about it but why were we looking for development in the first place? when we had good hardware and sh**** software with cra*** software support we would come here and look for help, but we still have updates and support and this device is almost (not fully) complete it doesnt need overclock it doesnt need more battery saving options it doesnt need so much bug fixes.
the only thing it need is a better front camera which is impossible with firmware and kernels so most of all a few ports and customizations remains which is not totally important right?
when i first had my xperia acro S it didnt have any custom firmware for a very long time the only thing was available = rooting my device! believe me for a very long time it was like this.
so my advice is to take your time guys relax if something came out use it if not dont be disappointed you wont miss so much you still have a great device with so many good things on it.

This is EXACTLY why I'm still on locked BL! but anyway our device has lack of roms like Cyanogen Mod, AOSP, PAC MAN, AOSPA (Paranoid) and also bug free miui port! (which I like Pranoid and miui so much) I'm currently working on a port for miui (stock based one) but this is something hard to get! currently I'm getting bootloop at kernel and as I don't want to unlock my bootloader (I love BE2 ) it's really hard to get it booting, and I'm not sure if any developer wants to contribute or if I get any further than this but I'm trying to make it bookable at least
EDIT: good news is I just saw the miui boot screen, bad news is it's not more than 2 sec and still I don't have adb
EDIT: Do you guys have made or downloaded any rom based on stock 4.2.2? would you mind give me updater-script in your zip file /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script
Thanks
EDIT: another good news is, got logcat ( have permission problems ) it would be great if anyone can give me an updater-script from downloaded or made stock rom (both 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 are welcome) please pm me

[Q] Will the Xperia Z development be evergreen? or will it reach a dead end soon?

Im looking forward to upgrade from my HTC One X, the reason being that its development has come to a dead-end, Almost no more custom ROMs, So Im thinking of buying either the Xperia Z or the Samsung Galaxy Note II. Both are identical devices, Im a custom ROM junkie and a device having active development is a must for me, and I plan on keeping this device for me for quite some time. Which device would you suggest? Note 2 or Xperia Z? Thanks.
I had the Note 2 and I sold it for my current Xperia Z. These phones are not similar bro. Just keep in mind that this phone has a completely different firmware atmosphere. Took me some time to get used to it. In regards to your question, I dont think it could be answered to well. We cant really predict future development. However, we DO know that official support from Sony is strong since its a rather popular device that will receive 4.4. The way I see it is if it is.getting 4.4 then it should have good support from devs now and in future. I would get the Z bro
Sent from my C6603 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
consider both features of each device and which suits you better , it is likely the xperia z will get 1 more update after kitkat and it would probally end from there with most devices officially .... i could be wrong as the android os and hardware requirements are becoming less needy so who knows we could see another 2 updates after kitkat .... my old phone the htc desire only really went up to froyo to the general public and gingerbread for the developer community officially however xda devs have supported the device up to kitkat and as you know this device has way lower memory and chip set (this is at least 3-4 updates after official updates ceased to be released)
