Nexus trade-in program - Nexus 4 General

Would love to see Google offer some kind of trade-in program for Nexus devices, whereby you could trade in your old Nexus device for a discount on a newer Nexus device. For example, being able to trade in a current gen Nexus 7 to get a discount on the updated version expected to be announced at Google I/O this week. Discount would only be redeemable for buying another device from the Play Store, and old devices could be recycled by Google for parts.
Google would develop brand loyalty, ensuring current Nexus owners are more likely to stick with the Nexus line, as well as encouraging others to join the Nexus bandwagon. And we Nexus owners would get lovely discounts on upcoming Nexus hardware.
What do you guys think about this?

As someone who ordered a Nexus 4 yesterday, I would most certainly love to see this.
Especially if a new Nexus phone materialises at the I/O in a few days!

No chance imo

How much more of a discount do you want? This isn't the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S days where to buy an off contract Nexus device sets you back $500-$600.. A Nexus 4 16GB for $350 unlocked/contract free is dirt cheap and almost in "how do they even make a profit?" territory.. If Verizon had this thing available to kill your wallet with it would be $100 w/ a 2YR contract, $600 retail/contract free and neutered w/ delayed updates and non-functioning Google wallet. Same goes for any current generation Nexus device.. They are insanely cheap already..

Personally, I'd be happy with somewhere between £25-£50.
Then again, I'm easily pleased.

what a stupid idea
you can sell youself for more then any trade-in program can give you. i sold my 8G N4 for $340 shipped. (shipping out tomorrow)

And this also

Had a real hard time trying to sell my Nexus 7 at a decent price after Google discontinued the 8GB model (I had the 8GB model). A trade-in program would've made things awesome
Would definitely also give some points to brand loyalty, but then again, I don't really even plan to ever buy a non-Nexus device already

Sell it on swappa. There's your trade in program

Nexus phones don't really reduce it value a lot after time. It's really difficult nowadays to find a new Gnex for less than 250-270$ and a used one in mint conditions for less than 200 (if you even find it).
So I see no point on this as Google will never offer you any amount close to this. So you better sell it yourself and upgrade. That's what I did.

That is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I figure that in order to get the phone to be distributed by the big carriers, Google probably had to agree to sell their own version at a high price.
Plus cellular radio and licensing fees for patent holders. Look at HTC and how much they pay companies like Microsoft for patents that they hold related to cellular phones. I read an article that Microsoft makes something like $15 for every HTC android phone sold.

I really wish I didn't have Verizon so that I could get this phone. Id rather have an unlocked nexus than a bastardization and a new 2 year contract w/ATT/Tmobile.

As I recall the GNex is only around $100 more expensive than the 16 GB N7 in the Play Store. Unfortunately the GNex is not available for us Canucks at that price.
Idk cuz mobile carriers are jackasses. Cellphones are basically as bad as buying a bottle of water.

Specifically with respect to the Nexus 7, there is very little profit on the device.
Google expects to make money by selling you apps, books, music, films etc and from other services.
Asus are almost certainly in it for the kudos it gives to their brand - if the Nexus 7 wasn't a Nexu device, it would be at least 25% more expensive.

Because we aren't willing to pay that much.
Simple as that.
The manufacturers tried selling $400 or $500+ tablets, and they're pretty much flopping. Tablets just aren't considered as necessary as phones, so none of them (save the ipad) got enough momentum to take off.
They then discovered that we are willing to pay $200 or $300 for a popular brand, so that's where we're at now.
This is a good thing (ipad users aside). It means we'll start to get more bang for our buck, because us consumers as a whole were picky enough. Now all that's left to do is to become even more picky, so they're forced to sell for $100.

Yes, we all have the same feeling, the Nexus 7 is a fine piece of hardware and it was indeed worth every penny I paid for it, I'm too grown up to care what other people pay for theirs..
I just wish I had known there was a 32gb coming considering I bought my N7 a month ago. I need more space than 13gb of usable memory, that's like 5 hd games.
I think this is part of the reason behind the Google Play $25 credit honestly, so really I only paid $225

Glad I waited, just bought the 16GB.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
What bothers me is that the resell value was slashed. I mean if you bought a 16gb for $250+tax, you could probably resell it for $225 on top of all of initial offerings we've gotten from Google. Now it is $199, you'd be lucky to get $175 for it. Plus with the upgraded memory people aren't going to want the 16gb so you'll have to practically give it away.
Oh well. Life is full of surprises. They should have just came out with a 16/32gb unit out of the gate and stop screwing around with 8gb. Memory is so cheap now-a-days that it is pathetic that we allow manufactures keep us in this rut. I mean I had 16gb CF in my old Dell x51v Windows 5.0 "palmtop" haha. Honestly units SHOULD be coming in as 32/64gb these days... or even 64/128gb.
Media consumption is getting deeper and deeper. With games using 4gb each, 8/16gb just don't cut it without sacrifice.
Full agree on that post. But ive learned my lesson, i will wait at least till Christmas to get a Nexus 4 and closely watch the rumors.

I will second that. I do not regret paying full price for mine. That's always the price you pay for buying tech. It gets cheaper and specs always improve. Give it a few more months and there will be something better and cheaper on the market, that I have no doubt.

im stuck
I sold my 16gb nexus 7 to my roommate because 16gb was to small for me and i want to buy the 32 gb version
But i also want the nexus 10 or the new chrome book as a replacement for my Transformer prime
the Transformer prime is ok especially for what i do (I use it for school/occasionally web surfing) but it has no real upside. it still lags, and slows down for no reason.
Anyone have any ideas what should i do?
Im thinking nexus 7 and probably the chromebook, its got the same processor and ram.
I'm being philosophical about this.
I bought the 16GB version three months ago so I've certainly had my money's worth.
Wife seems disinterested in having my N7 to make way for a 32GB upgrade and then Google announces the N4 16GB and I need to upgrade from my HD2 anyway.
Wife needs to upgrade her phone, too, so she can have the HD2.
My N7 still has about 6GB free space and that's with a lot of apps and stuff which would usually be on my phone.
Once I've bought the N4 and moved a lot of apps and stuff over to that there will be sufficient room on the N7 for my needs.
Plus there's still OTG and Drop Box ... Or VPN to my own local server ..

Price for the nexus 5?

How much money do you guys think the nexus 5 would be? i would love a two year 16gb model for 200$.
I'm thinking $400 for the base model, off contract. They're not going to retain the same pricing as the N4 in all likelihood given those "leaked" specs.

It really is the only bump they can go with the N5 otherwise they would just be repackaging the N4.
lets also guess how many people will get their hands on n5
I'll definitely fork out $349 or $399 for the 16GB or 32GB models respectively. Anything more than that, I might think twice.
But I'll still probably take it. Nexus S was my first android phone and I've never regretted my decision of getting that (even if I don't have it anymore since I lost it on my way to work)

I think the OP meant $200 on contract, which would be the absolute most it would cost on contract, and even that would be a ripoff. If it's $349-$399 off contract, then on contract it should be free.

Why does everyone assume the pricing can't be the same as the N4 last year? The N4 was basically the Optimus G, which at the time was the best of the best, as far as specs go.
This time around, the N5 is basically the G2, which, again, currently has the highest specs on the market. The situation looks identical to me, and I see no reason the price should not be identical as well.

Ill be getting it regardless, just had a tax rebate so nicely timed with the launch of the phone

The Amazon Watchtower

We know that other retailers will be carrying the Nexus 5 sooner or later.
For those of us with memebership in the primeverse or for those that prefer to save on shipping & save *ahem* file our own taxes, avoid the google play limbo experience and/or use our chase amazon visa's, I present to you the Nexus 5 Amazon thread.
Let's keep on the lookout for nexus 5 developments relating to amazon and post any information here!
I've heard rumors that amazon will be stocking somewhere between 3-7 days.
However, the rep that I spoke to didn't appear to have any information about upcoming nexus 5 availability.
Here's my chat with the rep:
http://goo.gl/DMza0n
I also believe the stock alerts in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503657 added amazon to it's monitor list.
i have prime but still paid for expedited shipping and tax from the play store. i dont mind paying more to receive it earlier than to wait.
Pearl sure was useless. You should have told her a joke. Maybe ask her out on a date or something. Better luck next time bro.
I would have waited to purchase it from Amazon, however, I'll still get dinged with sales tax and only save $10 on shipping.
So, I'll just say the $10 was used for help out with the "instant gratification."
I put myself down for a 32GB black that ships in 2-3 weeks, if Amazon gets it before then I will cancel and order from Amazon.
If amazon sells the nexus 5 everything will be perfect

AFAIK, the N4 was not sold by Amazon. The only Google devices they sold were the Chromecast and the Nexus 7 (2013), which were both sold at the same price as the Play store and listed on Amazon on release day.

I have a feeling that the $800 markup is a Sprint thing to "encourage" people to buy it on contract.
I hope they will sell the Unlocked version at the same price as the Play Store since they didn't put a markup on the Nexus 7, Chromecast, or Chromebooks.

True. I returned my iPhone 5S yesterday and ordered the Nexus 5.
Unless you stick to the upgrading every 2-years at subsided pricing, Google has the best pricing as far as I see.
Let's just be happy there was no 8GB version. Otherwise the 8GB would have probably started at $349 and bumped the other 2 up by $50.
The Nexus device is not really meant to compete with the S3 or G2 at this point. The Nexus device is really meant for devs to create on pure Android and Google is willing to eat profits for that. In the meantime all the non-devs and phone geeks get to enjoy a great phone at a great price.
If Google wanted to sell this phone like there was no tomorrow and compete with Samsung you would have seen some crazy marketing done by them prior to the launch. Instead, there wasn't even a peep out of Google and it silently just showed up for sale. To me that says they are not trying to take over the world with device sales.
I think their probably more interested in making profits on devices through Motorola. These are just some of my opinions and really doesn't represent anything more then that. Only Google really knows the answer to the who, what, where, when and why's. Just accept you are getting a great phone at a great price.
you know it only cost Samsung 240 dollars to build 3? and look at the price of that. ridiculous. I am grateful for the nexus line of phones. even with some compromises . I am done spending that kind of money on phones anymore
