Hello all,
I have searched high and low on this and many other forums to just find a simple method that actually works to root my Motorola Milestone A853.
Its running the stock rom fully updated to the last update which is Froyo 2.2.1.
All I need to do is root not install custom roms or anything else. I just want the phone rooted so I can overclock it and remove the bloatware too.
Thanks for all your help in advance and I really hope somebody has a simple step by step method. I did not want to try downgrading it 2.1 and then running vulnerable or other such methods. I just want to root it and tinker a little bit.
You want Universal Androot.
Google it.

I have a build number of 2.31.651.7 and was wondering if anybody could give me the first steps to take in order to root. rooting for dummys u can call it. i just want froyo 2.2 if anybody could help me out i would appreciate it. I just want to get froyo on it the easiest way. then i wont have to mess with it anymore untill i can get the evo next year. right?
nobody has an answer?
I used an app called universal androot to root. Not sure if it works on that build though but there are a number of guides to root on this site.
i know, ive looked around and wasnt very clear on how to root and install 2.2 using my build
well try universal androot ,the worst that can happen is it doesnt work.Search for it by name and download using your phones browser. After root use rom manager from the market and install recovery image then your ready to go.

I currently have the original droid and attempted to root it using super one click and it would lock up or stop running at the prompt: get mount path...... any ideas I currently am running version 2.2
You can't use super one click on the over the air build. I would suggest using zRoot, you can get it right off the market. I had the same problem.

I recently got a replacement phone via my insurance... however this one does not have the froyo update. I would like to root my phone... so that I can use the wifi tether... and it seems there are quite a few other things you can do to improve the performance of the phone. I am unexperienced and would like a step-by-step. Oh yeah... to make matters just a little more difficult... (sorry) I do not have usb cable. Is it possible to do these things without that?
Please help!
Do you want Froyo 2.2? Thats an easy over the air update. Cause then you can get Adobe flash and all of that. If not Im sorry I can't help. But if you want 2.2 then you can get Zroot from the android market. It's an easy one click root. After that get rom manager and make a nadroid recovery backup and flash a clockwork. If you need more help with either of them I can find you a link in this forum I bet.
I updated to froyo 2.2 (leaked version) on my samsung captivate, and I was wondering if there was a possible way to downgrade back to 2.1.
*The only reason im not liking froyo 2.2 at the moment i cant seem to learn our find out how to root it...
Wanted to root to rom a custom rom?
"noobie question"--> if i was to downgrade to 2.2 back to stock 2.1 and root it to have super user, i could then be able to install a custom rom? OR what would other people suggest doing?
Could someone point me in the right way with a link or two maybe, or some suggestions?
bummmpppp! this is all so new to me!
Here's a link to the SuperOneClick to root and enable non-market apps.
And here's a thread for new captivate users.
You might have an easier time finding answers in the Captivate forum.

Thanks so much for these thinks, I can use this SuperOneClick user on my Captivate with froyo 2.2 correct?
I like the froyo 2.2 just couldnt figure out how to get superuser, im trying to install a custom rom on it, never done it before just wanted to try one out and see! New to all this so probably have more questions haha !
Also another noobie question(s).
What does "flashing" mean?
lol
You have to be rooted to have superuser privileges.
Flashing a phone rom is like installing a new OS on a PC. Be careful on doing so and watch some videos and read up on it if you get brave to try flashing custom roms onto your device. Usually ppl use a windows app called Odin to do so. Make sure phone always charged 100% before flashing any new rom also. It could mess up battery stats otherwise and could risk brick if its almost dead then dies LOL. Assuming that's the context of flashing you meant.

Flashing in simple terms means to install a new OS version/Updates/Themes etc on the phone. The most common method found here in XDA is to use something called as Clockwork Recovery Mod.
Seriously, go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364 you will know what you need to do to flash a custom ROM. And may I suggest Firefly 2.1 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284 as your first ROM. It is a good ROM. You will enjoy it. There are some other ROMs, if you ask which is the best, clearly there is none, it is purely on preference. Once you have flashed one ROM, and then a few, you will know which one you like.
1. installing a custom rom does not require a rooted phone, you can copy the update.zip to your sdcard and get into recovery, select the custom rom zip file and flash from there.
2. have you flashed a bios on a computer? flash a phone's rom is very similar to that.
Hello. You all are great. I have read the faq and other threads but have not seen my questions clearly answered. Forgive me, but I am a noob and nervous. I have some general questions. I want to root but not flash a new rom. There are several programs I want that require rooting, e.g. keep lights on, non-market apps, tethering. How great is the risk to have just a rooted phone, no new rom, and continue normal daily use? Superone click has rooting and unrooting. Does unrooting to install any AT&T updates cause problems. I envision rooting, loading a couple of programs and leaving it alone. If I root must it remain rooted after installing the programs for them to operate. Or, can I root, install programs, and then unroot? Again, thanks for all your help.
Rooting is non-destructive. If a program requires root to install, it likely requires it to run as it will need to access superuser permissions. If you remove root those programs will no longer run. Rooting is probably the most basic mod you can do to your phone. I've heard of it failing, but I've not seen anyone damage or brick their phone with it. Do it and forget it. It should have no effect on any future updates as they will probably come via Kies Mini and not OTA, but I doubt we'll see any more. You should update to stock Froyo 2.2 before you root.

I used the all in one. You can find it in the development forum.

Thank you. I looked at the all in one option and I have to say it appears daunting and a bit intimidating. Is it necessary simply for rooting? It seems to be aimed at those wishing to replace the roms. I have read rather a bunch on all of these methods. I am leaning towards z4root or superoneclick. Any opinions/advice regarding these or others is appreciated. I read somewhere that for superoneclick for the ATT captivate one needs to chnge to rage against the cage from psneuter. Is that correct?
The change to rage is only if you are already on stock Froyo. Super 1-click works fine for Eclair.
Super one click..as easy as it sounds

Super 1 click works fine for Froyo as well. I used it when I test drove official 2.2. It was a earlier version though (1.51). Not sure if that made a difference.
Okay, i currently have a N1 on CyanogenMod 7 just lying around, it was rooted with Universal Androot when it came out. I dont use it anymore because i have a G2X but i want to use it for testing purposes. The phone has nothing valuable and everything has been backed up and i got this idea.
Im currently working on Android Scripts to run and im mainly after the Default Stock. I need a link to a guide and the default stock to restore
Wow noob... ever heard of search?
I was about to add more info before you asked this -.-
You see, Universal Androot roots your phone by exploiting the system. Thing is, it roots your phone in one click and unlike z4root, i dont have to restart or anything! Its all right there and takes 5 seconds! Now the developer stopped updating it because Google fixed the patched used to exploit the system.
Im looking for the Stock Froyo THAT DOES NOT HAVE THIS VULNERABLE FIXED! Meaning, it MUST root and unroot with Universal Androot, anything else such as z4root and SuperOneClick WILL NOT WORK WITH ME so thats why im asking:
Im looking for:
A guide on how to restore Stock ROM (Forgot how to lol)
The Stock Froyo ROM that Universal Androot can work
A Link to the latest Universal Androot
Now, i can probably find the link to the Universal Androot and maybe how to restore but im mainly asking for a Stock ROM that Universal Androot supports and must be Froyo
Thanks!
Download the stock FRF91 (find the link in Wiki) and flash in recovery.
Another option, since it seems like your phone is probably well past its warranty, is to unlock the bootloader. Then you can root whatever version of Android you would like because you will be able to load a custom recovery. The custom recovery would allow you to flash a zip that can give you root access, or you can use adb and manually add the files needed into your system partition.
