I have tried my best to search the forums for this so if I missed it being mentioned somewhere I do apologize. I'm trying to be extra careful because the only reason I even have a Bionic is because my friend gave me her used one after my Rezound died and I don't want to lose another phone. Basically, when she had it she updated it to ICS using a leaked ota because of data connection issues. It fixed the issues, but now the phone can't be updated using the official JB OTA. My question is can the ota be flashed somehow. I don't need the phone to be rooted (my Rezound was so if I absolutely have to I can do it), I would prefer just to be on stock 4.1.2. I'm including a screen shot so everyone can see what version I am running. I've only had the phone a day so I appreciate the info. I'm not a develeoper, but I can certainly flash ROM's no problem.
Thanks in advance everyone!

I just a saw a post in drip saying anybody with a note can update? It gives all the instructions etc so cab i or cant i? It mentions something about doing it through kies or ota and you dont need to be rooted.
Can someone break this down for me.
Cheers

If the ICS update is released for your country (or specifically the origin of your Note) you can update through kies or OTA officially
If it's not you can also use PC Odin to flash the update and you don't need root for that
However, I advice you wait a little bit longer until the issue with the kernel bug in ICS update gets resolved so you don't end up with a fried Note by accident
hey
so are you saying if the update is available for my country its fine to update, or just wait until the bug is fixed. cause the ota one or through kies is meant to be official. i dont fancy flashing any roms through odin or whatever
cheers

Yes, you don't need to root to be upgrade to ICS. And Yes, you can wait until your country OTA or KIES available - Yes, it is official in this way.
But... "official" kernel still having a serious bug which will damage your phone. So, the best is wait until the bug fixed.
U dont need root to install the official german ics. But its nice 2 have root and cwm for backups etc. However, after installing ics german i didnt feel it was worth the hype. Touchwizz makes it feel exactly the same as my old gingerbread. So sitting around waiting for ur official ics fir ur country is useless. Do what i did, flash cm9 rom and feel ics like google intended it!
Hey Guys I got my galaxy note today! it's awesome!!!....but...I immediately tried to check for updates... but after agreeing with the terms and conditions, it says "Registration is failed. Try Again?".
How can I get around this and update my device OTA?
Here's my phone info:
Model: Galaxy Note GT-N7000
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: N7000XXKK5
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXKKA
have you tried installing Kies on your PC, then connecting the Phone via cable so that Kies can update it?
4.0 isn't available through OTA atm so you'd need to do the Kies thing

I'm doing that right now! Thanks! ... I guess my Galaxy Nexus habits are hard to break! LOL!
Sorry to hijack the thread but I also got my G.Note, but yesterday . Got it from Amazon Germany, and as soon as I took it out and connected it to the Wifi Internet it said that it had found the OTA update for the ICS.
I cancelled the update as I was not sure if it was worth it. I hear so many people saying that Gingerbread runs smoothly but that ICS is a pain. I also hear about all the camera bugs, etc that ICS has.
The question I have is: Should I keep with Gingerbread for a while longer or should I just update to ICS?
Thank you all for your advice.

I have tried Criskelo ICS, CM9, Stunner, Liquid Smooth and various GB roms. Even though I like some features of the ICS rom, I eventually settle for Chrack GB rom. It run smooth with good battery life and I have no problem runing all the applications I needs. I suggest that you use your GB rom for awhile before trying to update.

there were several updates to note (at least on mine, Base/Eplus Contract btw)
before ICS, and since ICS is not yet available OTA i think you can hit update on your phone until there are none left, then you should have the most recent Gingerbread version.
for ICS, see last post: Kies update^^
Sadly i already did the Samsung Kies update to ICS and now i have some battery problems (google cloud service and several other Wakelocks draining like a *****)
apart from that little problem ICS is working fine
Hi all and thank you for your input.
As for the last post from Aiphares, I can confirm that there is an OTA update for ICS for my phone.
If I hit update it says that an important 4.0 ROM is available and that it will be 316mb (if I remember it correctly). If I wanted to update now or later.
So I did hit later to see what your replies would be, as I did not want to be one of those asking for help how to revert to gingerbread because my phone could have horrible battery drain, or any other known ICS bug.
I would really like to have a working ICS on my phone, and hopefully something that would improve the S Pen, so that I could actually use it for my daily annotations (minutes of meetings, etc.).
Why can't Android battery just improve, I remember that from Froyo to Gingerbread the battery got much better. Well we can't have it all with these dual cores running in our pockets.
As for the custom ROMs I first want to try the official ones, and if I am am not happy with them, I'll read and read so to prevent triangles and than I'll try a Custom stable ROM.

Please do you people even read this forum?? If i was you and read all the threads about bugs (eMMC) etc. etc. i wanted to wait a bit more. Ok, you just might get lucky (or not) and wipe the phone ten times but if you're not prepare to go to the store and claim your warranty !!!
Please read the topics about bugs on ICS.

(thanks??)
good to know that there is the OTA update now,
well if you feel uncomfortable you can always wait it out, i'm sure there will be more ICS updates and bugfixes
Error retrieving information from server. (RPC: S-5: AEC-0) - This is the error that greets me any time I try to download anything on ANY of my Google accounts on play store. I can temporarily remedy the problem by removing my Google account and then adding it back, but after one or two app purchases, whether it be free or paid, the problem comes back. If it could cause an issue, I do have about 3 apps that I didn't get from Play Store, but rather downloaded the APK through the internet and installed on my phone (these were free). I decided to start doing this instead because this Play Store issue is becoming so tiresome. Any solutions? I am running Jellybean leak 4.1.1 with the OTA.
I had the same problem on my phone while I was on the leak...I couldn't figure out how to fix it...Luckily the official JB came out and I RSD'd back to official ICS so I could get the official JB update OTA. Haven't had the problem since being on the official JB. good luck

I was under the impression you couldn't roll back to ICS even with RSD while you were on the JB OTA? ... I do have a restore file from my 4.0.4, could I try restoring to this or would it bork the phone up hard? If I am stuck with this error until 4.2 comes out or something I can update to at least, I will be pretty upset but at least I will have my answer!

You could roll back on the very first JB leak, as long as you didn't take the OTA for it.
Since then, no rollback using anything

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. I will look on that link when I get home and see if I can resolve anything. As to ATGAdmin, thanks alot for clearing things up. I am on the OTA so i can't roll back, sadly. Will get back to you with results.

just use trusted kernel & good CWM from PhilZ or speedmod and keep watching sammobile for newer original ROMs from time to time and you are ok then.

actually i like to use odin and full rom from sammobile, samsung keep publishing roms for different contries, but they avoid bugs and hidden problem also,
i download a rom every quarter or so as usually i'm getting happier after that.
i used 4 roms JB till now, and the last one is the best ... yet
Hi
i can downgrade my note to kitkat from lollipop without any problems?
I made root in lollipop...
Thanks
Yes, just have to find your phones kk firmware and flash through Odin.
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA Free mobile app
Ok
what the best stock version of kitkat to get the best battery life?
I install the israeli version and i get same battery life like lollipop
thanks
I would highly recommending installing the stock version of KitKat that is released for your country.
Yes, i've just done this myself. I got the phone last week, and in amongst all the other 9 million pop-ups that Samsung provide, I accidently pressed yes to upgrade to lollipop.
I ran it for a day and the lag was terrible, so I have now gone back to KitKat. As above, I just went for stock for my country. It seems a lot better now. Once they release another lollipop patch i'll update. It's a shame, as I still think my htc one m8 is slightly faster. It feels more responsive. Anyway, thats off topic.
As above, just use Odin. I'm new to modding Samsung devices really, but managed it easy enough following the various guides around.
Did you guys have to factory reset your device after the downgrade?
If so, does the Kies application backup function safe the application data (logged in accounts, safegames, application settings etc.) too?
