[Q] Backup option not showing in recovery mode (2.3.6 Gingerbread) - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am currently on rooted 2.3.6 Gingerbread (I9070) and will upgrade to the JellyMOD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170925).
I've been advised to do a Nandroid Backup of my system via the recovery menu (Volume up+Home+Power button) before I upgrade.
I did this but the option for Backup doesn't appear.
After a quick research I installed Rom Manager via google play. Tried to install ClockworkMod Recovery via Rom Manager but it says my I9070 is not supported.
I'm a noob here and hope someone can help in getting the Backup section to show up in recovery mode.
Thanks.
Note: In about phone it shows:
Baseband version: I9070XXLD1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9070XXLD1-CL1067329 [email protected] #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXLD1

1. You instaled Jelly Bean ROM on Gingerbread. If you want it you need to flash JB with Odin, you have guide here - search for it.
2. We only can use custom recovery that is instaled with kernel, because those two share same partition. So no other way to install it, like on some other phones.
3. You probably got bootloop after installing JellyMOD on GB, so I suggest you to flash GB again. Or JB if you want it.
4. After geting back to GB, you can go get that recovery back and restore your prevoius ROM.

Thanks for the reply but I think you may have misunderstood.
I haven't installed JB YET, so I am STILL on Gingerbread.
Any options I have?

I was tired. I read that you instaled JellyMOD. You have stock recovery, it do not have backup. You need to root, and to install kernel with TWRP. Look for it in dev section of our phone. If you want Jelly MOD you need to flash JB with Odin.

Since my phone is already rooted is it ok just to install the kernel?
After a search I found this [GT-I9070][Kernel][GINGERBREAD] Stock Kernel + TWRP Recovery for Galaxy S Advance (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1873119&highlight=kernel+gingerbread).
Would it be ok to just install this via Odin?

Not with odin but yes, that is what you need. Get universal kernel flasher and use that tool to flash kernels. Odin way will increase binary counter.

Thanks for your replies.
I managed to install the kernel now and backup my phone.

JellyMod is base on JellyBean offical rom so it can't install from Gingerbread you have to update to jellybean with Kies or flash it with odin. Then get to recovery mode flash CWM and do what you want like root or flash kernel or Jellymid

You sure you have enough battery on your phone? Go to download mode again and flash gingerbread, root the phone. Then copy the slim bean into your internal SD card. Now go into CWM and do three wipes (Cache, Dalvik and Data). And flash the ROM....It should be up and running after that...

If it doesn't boot flashing GB again sorts the problem out, thats GB again! It means your IMEI has lost. You need to go back to stock rom to retrieve your IMEI. Download any gingerbread stock rom from net.

Sorry if I interrupt, but i have a quite similar problem. My SGS DOES boot though, and works okay... BUT it isn´t recognized proberly by my pc(although having all drivers installed) tried reinstalling both drivers and whole OS. Also tried other computers and cables. Phone boot fine in download and recovery mode but isn´t recognized by Odin, heimdall, oneclick etc.? My question is as following: Is it in anyway possible to grab a OTA/STOCK .zip to flash in Recovery 3e??
Thanks

When you flash from GB to ICS or jb and even fro. Ics to jb it will reboot on install then you need to go back into recovery and run the install a second time this is due to a partition change and the kernel needing to be rebooted into one compatible with those partitions so basicly flash cm9 or 10 twice for it to boot correctly

Hi,
I installed the latest ROM android 4.0.4 for my galaxy note, I also Roote and I installed a CWM manager v2.0.
My version is:
Android: 4.0.4
Kernel: 3.0.15-N7000XXLRI-CL811902
My problem is that CWM does not operate. When I do a backup, the reboot I do not have menus for the backup!
Does anyone has an idea there?
what should I do?
thank you
which method did you use to root ?
can you enter a working recovery using three buttons ( vol up -power- home )
You should forget about cwm manager... Install philzz kernel LRI which is safe for brick bug and includes CWM...

Root.zip can be flashed in stock recovery. If you want permanent cwm,you must flash CocoreE kernel with Universal Kernel Flasher.
-Download CoCore E kernel and extract 'kernel.bin.md5'

Yep if you can't enter recovery, flash the firmware back using ODIN as you can still go into download mode. Steps are here.

Ofcourse it boot normaly after rooting. What you expect to be after root? It just gives you root permissions. Nothing is changed in visual.
To get CWM use CoCore, UNZIP IT and transfer KERNEL.BIN.MD5 to phone, install Universal kernel flash and some explorer with root permissions like ES FILE EXPLORER. Open Universal kernel flasher, and open kernel with it and install it. Both things you have in Play store. Before doing this you need to root it.
P.S. To enter recovery turn off phone, and power on by holding Volume Up + Home (hardvare key below screen) and Power at the same time untill phone vibrate.

1. That is stock recovery.
2. Root your phone, HOW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jij-Bssni1s
3. Install CoCore HOW: Download it from here, unzip it and put kernel.bin.md5 to your phone (remeber where you put it). Use one with CWM, it is most similiar with stock one (that you do not get confused) Then install Universal kernel flash and ES File explorer. In Universal kernel flash thread is explanation how to use it, read it.
4. Reboot to recovery like you did (now it will not be stock one) and than you can install custom rom.
You can't install custom rom from stock recovery, that is why you need to do all this.
Dude the video you sent me has already costum recovery, i dont! And i rooted the phone already using this guide here http://www.androidrooting.com/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s-advance-i9070-gingerbread-2-3-6/

Wait, that root method is for Gingerbread? You have GB?
If that is correct than install custom rom for gb only. Your solution is to repartition sd card. That's why you can't see it. I had the same problem, and I am telling you from my expirience. Search xda with "how to repartition sd card". Like I told you on my first post on this thread.

Yes. For begining would you read my post that you just quoted. JetMOD is GB ROM. You can't just install GB ROM over CM. You can't even install JB ROM over CM (you need to change kernel first).
For JetMOD downgrade to GB, root and install custom recovery and than JetMOD.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100642
If you want to be on JB still, then download your firmware from sammobile.com and flash it with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985398
Do you have I9070P??? If you do do not install non P firmware, you will HARD BRICK PHONE!!! That error 7 was shown because you used wrong version of CM, if you have P than you should download for P.
P.S. Your sim card will work if you do FACTORY RESET. It should be always done on every ROM change.

You cannot downgrade from android 4.x to android 2.x. That's because 4.0.4 and higher roms have a different bootloader. So don't try to flash gingerbread over kitkat, but if you tried and your phone didn't bricked let me know!!!

I know well what CWM stand for and what it is. I know he was asking how to downgrade from CWM 6 to CWM 5 but he was asking also for a downgrade from KitKat to Gingerbread. I just said that it could brick the phone.
For the CWM downgrade you must:
1) reboot in recovery mode
2) install the latest PX recovery for galaxy ace
3) reboot recovery
4) install CWM5
5) reboot recovery
6) done!

Actually downgrading from KitKat to Gingerbread will not brick the phone as long as you flash it through odin. Then again flashing any Gingerbread custom rom will not brick your phone as they are made to work only on CWM5. Hence flashing Gingerbread custom rom through CWM6 will only give you errors. Its always safe to install Gingerbread stock rom using odin. Here is the link on how to install stock rom using odin along with all firmwares and drivers (check "Preparations" section),
Flash stock rom on Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 using odin/
Once installed, go to recoverymod and do a wipe data/ factory reset & wipe cache (otherwise bootloop might occur). Then restart. Now you have successfully flashed the stock rom. Here is the link for rooting and installing CWM5 on Samsung Galaxy Ace,
How To Root and Unroot Samsung Galaxy Ace?

Also if you still want to use KitKat, then you can use the KitKat version flashable through CWM5 by @Salim El Yabouri. Here is the link,

Hope I Helped

1. I proceeded as you said, to downgrade from 6.0.4.6 to 5.0.2.6.
It worked.
Thank you very much indeed.
2. Do you know if there is any 6.0.4.7 zip or 6.0.4.8 zip for s5830?

Well i mentioned it earlier in a post but still instead of upgrading to 6.0.4.7 mardon's new recovery has more feastures: Check this link.
But I recommend 5.0.2.6 as it can flash almost all zips without any problem whatsoever.
As written on mardon's page that 6.0.5.3_1 was ported to Ace for flashing his kk custom rom

Thank you.
About your remarks:
1. cwm 6.0.4.8/philz edition did not work. a) it has mount problems; b) it prevented android 2.3.5 from booting.
2. You, before editing, said recovery is independent of the rom on the phone. If this is the case, then why all cwm 6 versions are in trouble with /system on my phone? and why mardon said that won't work with stock rom?

Cwm 6 or 5 cannot mount /system /data or /cache bcoz cwm cannot handle samsung's filesystem rfs used in galaxy ace. This problem has no solution except changing to custom rom or using cfroot kernel which has ability to change fs type to ext4.also it is quite better than stock kernel. Proceed with caution. Also i think you need android 2.3.6 for cf root kernel. You can download official android 2.3.6 from sammobile.com and cf root kernel for s5830
from Google. Also do try cwm 5.0.2.6 once it can work.
And btw flashing 2.3.6 will wipe data cache root everything.
If you choose to flash 2.3.6, try cf auto root kernel. Cm roms use ext4 by default with quite better kernels.

1. CWM 5.0.2.6 does not have any mounting problem.
2. I do not want changing to custom rom.
3. Can "cfroot kernel" be used along with my official 2.3.5 rom?
4. What caution do you mean when you say "Proceed with caution"?
5. If I install 2.3.6, then will I have "cfroot kernel" and consequently can I install CWM 6 without mounting problem?
