USB Parking Distance Control - Nexus 7 General

This is more for the guys who are running a Nexus 7 as a head unit, have any of you looked into the USB parking distance radars? I found one thread over on mp3car.com, but it sounds like those are no longer available, there is also a Russian site that seems to offer an Android based system, but its a Russian site and I have no idea about pricing etc.
Just curious if anyone else has looked into this?

I don't think it will work with the Android o/s. The system plugs into a PC and is recognized as an HID in the device manager. I don't think the Nexus 7 will be able to recognize it.

Anyone interested in modding the AVIC series In Dash Computers (Windows CE)

This doesnt fall into any category of phone, but I think with some tweaking, we can really utilize this deck to its full potential. The Pioneer AVIC series Navigation/DVD/Car Radios are Windows CE Based, and there has been a mod to boot it directly into windows CE. The potential is AMAZING to combine the units with our smartphones. PM me if you are interested, and or have the knowledge to take this to the next level. Go to AVIC411.com to see what has been done so far. Really, not much besides some minor mods, but I could see this unit becoming a complete smartphone interphase, etc... I currently have a touch pro, and have ordered the AV adapter. I am working on a launcher to keep it in the shell, and give it the ability to use the phone as a modem, to then have dash board internet, and outlook. the possibilities are limitless!
I have the same setup, surprised no one has really taken this any further yet. I agree with you the potential here could be pretty sweet!
Was wondering if you had anyluck with teathering your touch pro to the pioneer avic headunit?
Avic...
No, I have not, but I did get the video adapter on ebay, so I am pumping video thru the AV1 source...
I really have not had a ton of time to do alot, but there is a bunch of stuff on AVIC411.com...
Let me know if you find or are able to do anything cool. (like getting the bt to work consistantly!!!)
CHARLIE
Interested
I'm definately interested. Just got a avic-900bt and would love to code some bolt on functions & camera input mods & maybe even get some extra devices interfaces working better.
I'm guessing we'd never be so lucky as to get source for the 2.0 update. Do you know if there is an avic emulator available? Where to start?
Details on setting up AVIC emulator here: http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18137&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=8
Has anyone done research, mods or other to get internet and/or full phone screen output to show up on the AVIC's???
I have two avic900bt's & a Sprint TP2...
I'd love to have weather, current location radar and everything else to display while driving.
The ultimate "coolness" would be able to control the phone through the AVIC's display!
Off to do some more dreamin'...
Raymond
Avic
I too have a sprint tp2 and an avic f90bt with the 3.0 firmware upgrade. I do know that it is Windows CE, and there is a lot that could be done, I just dont know exactly how to do it
I have purchased a video out from ebay for the tp2, and am able to use the video 1 input on the avic, but it is not near what it could be. There are so many other things like interactive mapping, weather etc...
Can you activesync with it?
If you just want to remotely display the screen of another Windows CE device (the Pocket PC) on another one (the Avic) just use a program like NetOp (http://www.netop.com/) installed on each device. You can probably create a PAN connection between the 2 devices using bluetooth to get a network connection. And you probably won't need Activesync if you just download the cab versions and install them.
maybe have someone intresse to help me with the radar detector system modify on a pioneer AVIC-HD1bt

[Q]Is there a possibility for external keyboards?

I recently got a carrying case for about $8 for my kfhd. It also comes with a built in keyboard, which is very cool. To see if I could use it, I also purchased a micro USB to USB in order to connect, but it doesn't work at all.
I'm assuming this is because of the closed os. Once a bypass or stable ROM gets released, will using an external keyboard ever be a possibility?
I've seen the nexus 7 connected to a micro keyboard via usb so its a possibility if you went with a straight android ROM, but the bootloader still needs to be cracked first. I can't remember if the KFHD has bluetooth, otherwise you can try bluetooth keyboard.
Edit: appears that KFHD only has bluetooth for headphones and speakers according to their site. I just returned my KFHD and got a Nexus 7 and typing with my HP touchpad bluetooth keyboard on my Nexus 7 Small things like this, not even being able to use an external keyboard right off the bat adds to the list of returning the KFHD making me go with another device.
Yes, I suppose it's only a matter of time before someone gets the bootloader to work.
I'm hoping my time invested in waiting will pay off with better hardware capabilities
I didn't want to play that wild card so I returned my KFHD and picked up the N7. There were devs exchanging comments on a thread in the general section but any talk on there seems to have ceased, so that is not a good sign in my opinion. I'm sure they are working on it and I'll kick myself when the bootloader unlocks but its not a chance I can take right now.
If you have a BT keyboard in hand, doesn't hurt to try. Someone said they got a BT game controller to work.

[Q] [idea] Android Auto without car headunit?

How hard would it be to activate android auto and have it use the device's own peripherals (display, microphone, speakers), instead of outputting via USB to the car's display and use its buttons/speakers/microphone?
Not all of use have the budget/predilection to buy a brand new car or head unit just to use what seems to be a very useful piece of software. Some of us just want to use the phone in a car dock, like it's been the norm until now.
I am sure we will see hundreds of posts asking this question.
Likely #1 FAQ for Android Auto.
See my post on the new app and it's developer mode.
If developers can see and use the UI pretty well without a head unit, presumably on a tablet or larger phone, then non-developers should be able to do the same.
I've also asked this on the android dev google+ post and the answer was, as expected, very evasive.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+AndroidDevelopers/posts/21Zscmv7xvA
I plan on going through the Android Auto Development API to see if there is anything we can utilize.
Also just posted a question to that G+ post:
5:24 PM
Will the Android Auto software provided to manufacturers to be installed into the head units be released to public? If not, what is the process someone or a company can become a manufacturer for an Android Auto head unit?

The blog post is from yesterday but the linked video is from last November:
http://android-developers.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/take-your-apps-on-road-with-android-auto.html
There is a lot of buzz out there right now about "how can I use this on my Phone/Tablet"
I love the idea of the AutoMate idea but like others what I am wanting is this.
Use Case: Turn a non LTE Nexus 7 or other tablet into a head client (IE Dumb Terminal).
I still want to power the unit with my phone as the Android Auto specs lay out. I just want to use a permanently mounted Nexus 7 as the controller as the new head units are doing. There is a chance this could also be done using a touch LCD display and a RaspberryPI mounted in car.
I know many have searched for specs on how we create a client. I suspect there may be some exclusivity deals for release or first crack at it in place with auto manufacturers. If we can figure out via API how to plug a phone into a Nexus 7 and control it via its screen that would be wonderful!!
The information has to be out there. After all, the upcoming Parrot RNB 6 looks to be a simple Android device strapped onto an amplifier.

I think Google will keep their source code secret, both for the phone part, as well as any software that might run on head units.
Keeping Android app source code secret is the new normal for Google and has been for quite some time IMO, unless there is a compelling business reason to open source it.

IMO the info is secret and the rest of us will have to reverse engineer.
Their motive for keeping it secret is so car manufactures have another pricey option to charge people for

I think they have multiple motives.
One is that Google fears legislation that would kill Android Auto. If people get distracted and collisions result, regulators will be harsher.
Lawsuits are another risk.
Google also wants to better control Android Auto, as they do with Wear and any device that ships with Google Apps.
Android Auto without car headunit?
Turn your phone or tablet into an Android Auto device with Headunit or Automate
Want to give Android Auto a try, but don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a new car or hundreds of dollars on a new receiver? You could just attach your phone or tablet to the dashboard and install an app that gives you an Android Auto-like experience instead.
There are at least two apps under development designed to bring Android Auto features to any Android device.
It was just announced at Google I/O that Android Auto will be updated to include operating natively on your device without a head unit, using the same UI as if there were a head unit. The update for Android Auto that provides this functionality has not been released yet but it is coming.
Hey the problem i had that AA is not available in our country still i managed to install it on my dads lenovo vibe k4 note. (stock lollipop and will be receiving marshmallow..dad will kill me if i root it). ... work perfect but the problem os here.....My dad recently bought Hyundai i20 Active (December 25 2015 India) and i plugged the USB and nothing happened... OK i switched BTW input modes and video modes but of no use. Neither AA detects nor my in dash navigator ( The navi is built in stock one that it provide in all i20... and i had hard time finding its source code in www.opensource.lge.com[as mention in manual])
OK so any trick, tips, anything......bcoz i want that so badly........
Another thing.....why not Google manufacture GPS cards like this so anyone can use it in stock, aftermarket , Garmin GPS and Map my India navigation.... the craziest thing is the second image which is GPS card is nothing but an 8 GB SD card loaded with map data....why not Google load their auto thingy in it......and there is no such complications bcoz my music player , park assist etc has different interface and map has different interface. And manual says i can replace it with any map data card ....( I've read a post over car hackers guide where they unbelievably changed the whole goddamn stock firmwares.
PS note i want android auto only not any alternative..... ive tried alternatives.but im not getting the vibe that i have something "auto".

Help with android auto please :(

hello! im new to this forum, and this is my first thread so sorry if i happen to be posting this in the wrong place, but ive been looking all over trying to find a remedy to my problem so now im turning to the forums for help.
i have a newly acquired 2010 chevy malibu LTZ, with a freshly installed pioneer SPH-DA120 APPRADIO 4 double din headunit. it loooks amazing, and it works great with an exception of a HUGE headache. i have a google nexus 6, and ive been told multiple times this phone is compatible with android auto, and i have even seen videos of it working, but i cant get i to work at all on my head unit. now mind you my headunit is compatible with car play, mirrorlink, and appradio and theres videos of it running android auto. my problem lies when i plug the phone into the unit, the only message i get is an error on the unit reading "incompatible usb". the device ans the headunit are at the latest firmware, and as added measure, i reset the device, and tried applying the parking brake, and enabling USB debuggind, all with the same end result. im at my wits end trying to figure this out, someone help please!

The head unit isn't compatible with Android Auto. The Pioneer Avh-4100NEX runs Android Auto out of the box.
Sorry to bear bad news, but that model does not support "Android Auto": http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio/AppRadio+4+(SPH-DA120)
It supports CP, "AppRadio" mode and Mirrorlink.
I think it's unlikely to be upgraded.
Well in that case does anybody know where I can get a cheap HDMI to micro USB splitter for app radio mode then..

I can't answer that.
But if you are going with AppRadio, you may want to look into AppRadio Unchained or Reloaded; it seems a lot of people prefer it to AppRadio.

CarDroid Car PC - What is this?

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cardroid-car-pc-android-auto-usb-computer-dongle#/
Is this just a basic Android device using some mirroring software? Would it be possible to do this with a phone?
CarDroid is not a mirror dongle. The link shared has a comparison chart. Mirroring dongles don't have their own operating system and you are pretty much stuck with Android Auto.
The CarDroid is an alternative to Android Auto as it has its own operating system and memory. Also, it doesn't require you to pair with your phone to "mirror" content on your screen. Apart from connecting to BT/Wifi, your phone is basically "set free" and not required to operate CarDroid.

Here as well.
Let's see what happens with this thing.
take a video about using
at least on my car, I can not be connected to the car with Bluetooth and android auto at the same time. This could be an issue for me.
Witam i jak urządzenie dotarło? Jak działa jakieś filmiki?
There is this Italian video but it is not too much...
Hi guys,
I received this thing and I must say I am disappointed.
Concept is great and to be honest this is clone of Korean Fine Drive AI 2.
But as RayBomb says device hijack your Bluetooth connection with headunit and you cant use phone just for calling over headunit.
The other big issue is non functional GPS (or missing one I'm not sure).
The project owner is trying to override this with some workaround with GPS tether from your phone but in that case you don't need this device at all.
And cherry on the top.
While flashing it with new firmware it just stopped and now I have something nice looking usb stick.
Device is probably in boot loop and nothing cant see it on usb port. I would feel better if this was my first flashing. When I think a little it is my first time to flash something regular. Since today I was only flashing custom roms and rooted devices and something like this never happened.
My advice is to stay away from this.
Better investment is to make your dedicated AA phone or just to buy phone and root it and install screen2auto what actually I did and it is working like a charm. Bugger is that you need to connect your phone every time with cable but even that is better than non functional device like this.
Only my 2 cents.
Interesting, I'm going to keep my eye on this. It seems like it has potential if they can get the bugs worked out.
I'm using Screen2Auto on a 2 phone setup because I don't want to root my main phone, but it has some problems. Hopefully, they'll get this working.
If they can get it working as intended would you be able to do a Google Assistant search for a phone number and have it make a phone call through your phone?

Exactly like you said.
I was the one refunded and removed after few comments they didnt like.
On their forum also lot of my comments are removed and as I sad I was the one who bricked device. My first brick after so many years without any chance to revive it.
Only thing I regret is that I didnt backed all apps from device with app monster because I like the feature you can use your own launcher like you are on your phone. No annoying AA with his launcher and restrictions what app you can use even when you patch it.
If your device is still alive can you investigate how did they do it yo use AA on headunit as a screen.
Sorry for my bad Enlish but I hope you understood what I meant to say.

Google CarPlay AI box. They use the wired CarPlay interface to project an Android OS on the car's infotainment screen. They are available now and have more features.
