I have been researching if a Droid 4 can be unlocked to work with t-mobile. Verizon said it could not be done so i went to Motorola who informed me that there is a Subsity unlock code that WILL allow the Droid 4 to work in the US if used when programming the sim card, but I could only get this code from Verizon since they are the ones that assign it to each phone individually. So I called Verizon and spoke with several departments from customer service to tech dept, to Global tech dept and their respective supervisers and everyone claimed to know nothing of this "code".I advised each person I spoke with that if in fact there is such a code I am entitled to it as my phone is paid in full and not encumbered by any contract. After 2 hours of this run around i went back to Motorola and advised them of the wall I had encountered and was tranferred to a very nice superviser who has taken on the task of finding out why i am not getting the code and trying to get it for me. I will undate post with my success or lack there od as soon as I get the final verdict. The important thing is that as customers that own their equipment we are entitled to this code without so much hassle once our equipment is paid and our contractual obligations are complete, that code can be likened to our bill of sale, or title of ownership that allows us to do as we please with our purchase.

That site states
"Motorola Droid 2, Droid 3, and XT610 Droid Pro from Verizon, can only be unlocked for International use. After unlocking them, USA Carriers (At&t, T-Mobile, etc) will not work. Please note these phones can only be used outside of the USA."
And they don't even list the Droid 4 in their options.
So far nobody has got it working on GSM in the US: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938246

Hello I'm in canada and bought a Droid 3 (verizon) from ebay
I will unlock it with a code that is available from well known sources (swiftunlock, etc..)
the description says 'Ready to Activate' so this worried me abit, doe sit have to be activated thru verizon before the phone will even work or do anything
or can i punch in the unlock code (based on its IMEI) and start using it regardless of whether it is 'activated' or not
what im worried about is, if it hasnt been activated, will its unlock code (based on IMIE) even show up to these unlockers, or is the code generated right away when a phone is manufactured and stamped with an IMEI regardless of activation
THanks!
You don't need to have it activated on Verizon to unlock the GSM part.
You can easily bypass the activation by tapping in the four corners of the screen on the activation prompt.
As soon as it sees the foreign SIM it will prompt you for unlock code. Given you got an unlock code for it, you should be able to unlock it.
There are some horror stories with the older Droid 2 Global - some of them were custom locked by Verizon and standard unlock codes unlockers provide do not work.
I haven't heard yet of somebody successfully unlock a D3 using online unlock service (only Verizon Global support is known to provide unlock codes that work so far). But it has been couple of weeks since D3 is available, maybe unlockers are getting those codes already. Please keep us posted!
Personally I am going to wait for the Canadian XT860 that is coming shortly to Bell. Since I have some not so pleasant experience with the buggy Droid 2 Global radio/baseband and given the fact Droid 3 uses the same chipset (Qualcomm MSM6600), chances are GSM/UTMS radio of D3 suffers from the same issues D2G does.
From another side - D3 is cheaper than XT860. I am sure Bell will charge at least $550 for it, if not even $600 (and tax), D3 comes much cheaper at $475 US (even US-CDN$ rate is favourable) at non-contract price.
Keep us posted on how it goes with your D3!
There was a report of succesful unlock here in the forum, and now I confirm this too.
The code from swiftunlocks worked. I contacted the guy in advance, he told me about 90% D3 can be unlocked. And at least for me, it worked. I can really recommend his servive.

I wrote him an email to [email protected] (had it from ebay, wanted to ask him if he _really_ can unlock D3), he responded very quickly and offered me the code for $20. Had the code a few hours later. Really can recommend.
And no, I don't think it will work with U.S. GSM providers.
Ok, I've browsed everywhere and can't get a straight shooter answer. To unlock the SIM in the Droid3 Global, what is the method behind this. I know the steps to do with the unlock code. I know the multitude of companies that provide the codes, and I know Verizons requirements for obtaining the code from them.
My question is, is the code stored somewhere within the phone? Is there an algorithm thats used to determine the code? Can CDMA WorkShop (newer paid 3.xx version) be used to force unlock or decipher the code? Nobody seems willing to give this information. Everyone appears to be out to make a dollar. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thank you

From what I've read/researched, Motorola doesn't allocate SIM Unlock/Subsidy unlock codes based on some algorithm that uses your IMEI. Which is why there isn't a program to automatically generate codes.
Apparently it is in fact based on the meid and possibly chip set programming considering the d2 global (some) got an ota update to circumvent remote unlocking. I'd like to know the program or method used by these companies for this. I work on a LoT of phones for friends and would love to avoid having to process a payment every time I need one of these unlocked. But it appears that the cellular community holds this information hostage as I've done relentless searching and have gotten nowhere. I've attempted with Radiocomm, cdma workshop 3.8, DFS cdma tools, qpst, and a few others with no success

There are people making their living doing what you are doing for free, of course they're not going to tell you how they do it
My understanding is that the code was stored somewhere on the radio chip. Not sure about the security method, it might be just some MD5 encoding plus some seed (salt if you understand PHP).
Ummm... So that means...??

Can we just call up Verizon's Global support and ask for the unlock code? I heard that they give out the code once every 10 months/per line/per customer.
Essentially yes, that's an option. However, most of the time when I'm looking to unlock a droid2 or D3 global its because its not currently under contract or the contract payment is past due, hence needing to circumvent this and obtain the code remotely so that it can be moved to another carrier.

Obviously, having their phone unlocked is a commodity to them, since it has some stringent requirements. I'd try to make some friends who will activate the phone temporarily on their account for a small fee, so that it can be unlocked legitimately. Offering a little money to people you know for what should seem to them a small favor isn't unreasonable for this kind of help.
Personally, I wouldn't trust the unlock codes or programs because I want to make sure my phone keeps working for the long haul. Also, it would suck to pay for an unlock code/method and have it not even work.
Good luck on your endeavors though! Would be awesome to get a workaround, since we shouldn't really have to ask to use our phones on any network, IMO.

Thanks for the research and really hope for a solution, I bought a D3 since september, for full price and clean ESN, BUT since I am outside USA, and NOT a Verizon customer by now my D3 is still a paperweight on my desk... :-(
By today I tested with 7 different Unlock codes sellers, two Tursims (one that came in Orange color package succesfully Unlocks D3 and I was able to make calls with my sim, BUT just at the moment that the D3 change from the Cell Antenna where was activated with the Turbosim inside to another cell antenna tower, it lost signal and must be need to Restart the sim on another phone for get the sim to register again in the network.
thanks for your interest and best regards on the research.

there are some companies that have a great reputation with this. one is a canadian site but i cant remember the name, its in another thread in this forum though... and locking makes perfect sense as verizon sells you the phone alot cheaper than it actually is, if you want it unlocked then its about 500 dollars. coming from europe and buying most my phones unlocked, its alot better buying under contract. although i do wish it was a 1year contract isntead
They get plenty of money back from the customer to make up for the subsidy. This is done through expensive data and text fees, among others. My opinion is that they chose the business model of offering the subsidized phones because it makes them more money in the long term and gets more customers to buy sooner. I don't begrudge them their business model choice, but I don't think the phones should be too hard to unlock since we still have to pay an early termination fee starting at $350 or pay the fees over the term of the contract. Either way, even if you use the phone on another network, they still get plenty of money from us when we buy the phone. So why not make it easier for international buyers and people who have accounts on other networks too? Frankly, it's just a matter of control.
Sent while mobile using Tapatalk.
Their business model makes perfect sense. The 10months is to show you are a dedicated consumer. otherwise you could purchase the 200dollars for the phone and then straight cancel the contract. Then they would lose money everywhere. Im all for getting everything free with techonology, I think everything should be open source and stuff like that. But their business plans with unlocking make perfect sense. They would go bankrupt without it. I do think their data plans and all that or definitely over priced. I agree with you their. But their plans alone cant pay to run their Giant corporation and pay salaries, and run the stores and all that. thats a big bill... But after this i wont respond in this thread about this topic atleast. Itll be hijacking lmao. but i do love intelligent conversation so if you want we can PM and discuss it.
I guess people don't understand my point. Verizon's fees (both monthly fees and early termination fees) make up a great deal of profits for their corporation, and I don't feel sorry for them for any reason. Me unlocking my D3 and using it on T-Mobile (when I keep the line I unlocked it on open for my dad's phone) doesn't cost Verizon anything. They don't need "dedicated customers" because they charge you $350 if you leave early, which is plenty on top of whatever you paid for the phone up front. The only way they lose money is if you fail to keep your line open, pay that ETF fee, and let the charge go to collections, after which point the collections agency will pay VZW usually no more than half of your bill. This is because they will most likely not get money back from the consumer, so they can't recover 100% of the lost funds; this is how collection agencies work in the US, in case you didn't know. And this is how carriers in the US get lots of profits from their customers, regardless of which carrier you switch to. I'm not suggesting someone should break their contract or skip their bills or the ETF, but that is the only way a carrier loses money on the cost of the phone, which is why they subsidize it. They make more in higher plan rates over time than foreign carriers make by charging the cost of the phone up front.

Hi, at&t atrix hd unlock code from cellunlockerpro.com has failed and I have only 1 more attempt left. Is there any way to reset the attempt counter? Which is most reliable site to get codes? please help.
I have a friend who's interested in buying my Droid 4. And he wanted me to unlock it for him, so I was looking around... pretty much everything out there looks like a scam (either it wants me to install software, and makes me take a survey to get a password, or they want $28 for a code, etc)
He lives in Italy, uses the Wind network, which he says uses 4G LTE. I've seen on other posts that it doesn't need to be unlocked to be used internationally... is that correct? Or would I have to do something in order for him to use it?
Right now I've got my Verizon SIM card in there, obviously I would remove that before selling it to him. Can it be used with the stock ROM and still work internationally?
Should be no problem. I have used my D4 in Germany. Just popped in a local SIM, got a text which provided the necessary changes for APNs, and was good to surf and call away. My Droid is stock rooted, but I don't think you need to have root.

So basically, any of those sites claiming to help you "unlock" the Droid 4 are scams?
Well, don't know what they claim to do. But you only need to unlock if you want to use a different provider within the US. Verizon locks you to their network within the US. Outside you can have any provider you like.

They claim to give you an "unlock code"... which as far as I know doesn't even exist or it would be common knowledge by now.
But that's nice to know, I've never traveled abroad with a cellphone (I didn't even own a phone back in 2006 when I went to England) so I thought "unlocking" a phone was a universal thing to remove carrier restrictions.
No unlock required
I just got back from Ireland. Per Verizon's instructions, I had originally called the International Customer Support number to have it unlocked for European GSM usage. Customer support informed me at the time, that the phone is unlocked for international GSM from the factory. Once I arrived, I just swapped out the Verizon SIM card for a local one. It took a little configuration to get the APN/MMS settings correct, but the local phone rep was able to fix all those basic settings.
Good Luck. I'm sure everything will go smoothly for you.
Hi
I recently bought and at&t moto x from ebay. I live abroad so I needed to unlock it and I've done it for many of my previous phones. However whatever unlock service I try it doesn't seem to work. I've tried ebay, unlock247, cellfservices & Unlockonline. None of them can find the code.
I contacted the seller, who was really nice and said He will refund me if I send it back. However that's really not feasible. He tried contacting At&t directly but they wouldn't do. The reason being the phone was given to his company directly by motorola. They develop software for android and iOS. So at&t said that they can't give the unlock code and we needed to contact motorola directly. But motorola is saying that carriers always provide the code. What do I do in these cases? Any possible way to unlock this? I don't want this to be a $300 brick or ipod :|

We haven't found a sim-unlock 'exploit' yet. As I understand it, AT&T will only sim-unlock devices that have been active on an account for a certain amount of time and meet certain criteria. Moto cannot provide you with the code, that is correct.
I thought the AT&T variant was already sim-unlocked for international use and only locked for domestic use though....
Could you trade it for the XT1053 (T-Mobile variant), which comes SIM-Unlocked?

No at&t is locked internationally as well. The subscriber is in good standing, but like I said the phone was provided by motorola to the seller's company. That's why at&t won't unlock it. What I don't understand is why I can't get the unlock code from the 3rd party services. Any particular one I could try?
So I tried to contact the seller
He said he talked to at&t, but at&t said that they can't provide the code and that he needed to talk to motorola directly. The phone was provided to the sellers company by Motorola for field testing and such. He thought it's a bad idea to contact motorola asking for an unlock. So talked to motorola regarding the phone and they kept saying that the carrier is the one to provide the code. I even called up at&t today and they said the won't do anything unless I provide the IMEI & phone number and SSN.
