AT&T Moto X sim unlock issue - Moto X Q&A

I recently bought and at&t moto x from ebay. I live abroad so I needed to unlock it and I've done it for many of my previous phones. However whatever unlock service I try it doesn't seem to work. I've tried ebay, unlock247, cellfservices & Unlockonline. None of them can find the code.
I contacted the seller, who was really nice and said He will refund me if I send it back. However that's really not feasible. He tried contacting At&t directly but they wouldn't do. The reason being the phone was given to his company directly by motorola. They develop software for android and iOS. So at&t said that they can't give the unlock code and we needed to contact motorola directly. But motorola is saying that carriers always provide the code. What do I do in these cases? Any possible way to unlock this? I don't want this to be a $300 brick or ipod :|

We haven't found a sim-unlock 'exploit' yet. As I understand it, AT&T will only sim-unlock devices that have been active on an account for a certain amount of time and meet certain criteria. Moto cannot provide you with the code, that is correct.
I thought the AT&T variant was already sim-unlocked for international use and only locked for domestic use though....
Could you trade it for the XT1053 (T-Mobile variant), which comes SIM-Unlocked?

No at&t is locked internationally as well. The subscriber is in good standing, but like I said the phone was provided by motorola to the seller's company. That's why at&t won't unlock it. What I don't understand is why I can't get the unlock code from the 3rd party services. Any particular one I could try?

So I tried to contact the seller
He said he talked to at&t, but at&t said that they can't provide the code and that he needed to talk to motorola directly. The phone was provided to the sellers company by Motorola for field testing and such. He thought it's a bad idea to contact motorola asking for an unlock. So talked to motorola regarding the phone and they kept saying that the carrier is the one to provide the code. I even called up at&t today and they said the won't do anything unless I provide the IMEI & phone number and SSN.
I live in Bangladesh and I really feel powerless at the moment. I don't want to have a $350 brick :|

[Q] Unlock question

Hello I'm in canada and bought a Droid 3 (verizon) from ebay
I will unlock it with a code that is available from well known sources (swiftunlock, etc..)
the description says 'Ready to Activate' so this worried me abit, doe sit have to be activated thru verizon before the phone will even work or do anything
or can i punch in the unlock code (based on its IMEI) and start using it regardless of whether it is 'activated' or not
what im worried about is, if it hasnt been activated, will its unlock code (based on IMIE) even show up to these unlockers, or is the code generated right away when a phone is manufactured and stamped with an IMEI regardless of activation

You don't need to have it activated on Verizon to unlock the GSM part.
You can easily bypass the activation by tapping in the four corners of the screen on the activation prompt.
As soon as it sees the foreign SIM it will prompt you for unlock code. Given you got an unlock code for it, you should be able to unlock it.
There are some horror stories with the older Droid 2 Global - some of them were custom locked by Verizon and standard unlock codes unlockers provide do not work.
I haven't heard yet of somebody successfully unlock a D3 using online unlock service (only Verizon Global support is known to provide unlock codes that work so far). But it has been couple of weeks since D3 is available, maybe unlockers are getting those codes already. Please keep us posted!
Personally I am going to wait for the Canadian XT860 that is coming shortly to Bell. Since I have some not so pleasant experience with the buggy Droid 2 Global radio/baseband and given the fact Droid 3 uses the same chipset (Qualcomm MSM6600), chances are GSM/UTMS radio of D3 suffers from the same issues D2G does.
From another side - D3 is cheaper than XT860. I am sure Bell will charge at least $550 for it, if not even $600 (and tax), D3 comes much cheaper at $475 US (even US-CDN$ rate is favourable) at non-contract price.
Keep us posted on how it goes with your D3!
There was a report of succesful unlock here in the forum, and now I confirm this too.
The code from swiftunlocks worked. I contacted the guy in advance, he told me about 90% D3 can be unlocked. And at least for me, it worked. I can really recommend his servive.

I wrote him an email to [email protected] (had it from ebay, wanted to ask him if he _really_ can unlock D3), he responded very quickly and offered me the code for $20. Had the code a few hours later. Really can recommend.
And no, I don't think it will work with U.S. GSM providers.

[Q] Help! Locked AT&T Moto X without anymore unlock attempts

Hoping for some help here. I'm a true NOVICE who bought a locked AT&T Moto X online. There were problems unlocking it and all attempts to unlock it using a code were used (not exactly my fault but it's a long story lol)
I've done some reading and I'm wondering if using JCase's ROCKMYMOTO method to root the phone using Cydia Impactor will also unlock it from the AT&T carrier?
(fyi I tried to install 'MotoRoot' and 'PwnMyMoto' but both were rejected — I'm assuming because the person I bought it from updated the Camera patch that nullifies the two earlier roots).
Any help would be great.

Bootloader unlock or sim unlock? Also, cydia? Isn't that an ios thing?
Pretty sure you are talking about the sim unlock which I know only gives a certain number to tries to get the proper code.
The only thing I can suggest is to plug the phone in so it has power and then let it sit at the code entry screen, with any luck after a number of hours it will again prompt for the code.

It doesn't bring up the SIM unlock screen anymore even when I insert new SIM cards. It reads my SIM as I can use theSIM toolkit and see my phone# but there is always the 'No Sim Error' icon at the top line of the phone.
okay well I guess there is no solution to it then... too bad I was hoping somebody would've had a suggestion or perhaps even an easy fix.
A heads up, if anyone here is with AT&T and wishes to stay with AT&T for the life of a Moto X I'll be putting a sharp Blue/White with Red accents MOTO X up on EBay pretty soon. It works great except it is apparently now impossible to unlock it to another carrier.

Did you try speaking with AT&T customer care? Surely there has to be a solution to this
Have you tried any of the codes from other Motorola phones that may bring up the unlock screen? I thought most of them still allowed you to unlock but forced you to wait a long time if too many incorrect codes were entered.
One of the codes I found was #073887*
Or leaving the phone phone powered up and turning airplane mode on and off after waiting a long time to see if the unlock screen will come back.
Even if you do root the phone it won't unlock it, the only way is the proper 8 digit code. I have unlocked two of them without a problem but they were Rogers Canada phones which seem easy(and cheap) to get unlock codes for.

I havent talked to AT&T as I bought the phone second-hand off of EBay. Plus I believe unlocking voids the warranty so I don't believe they assist me with it.

Thanks for some good suggestions I hadn't heard or thought of. So far no luck but I'm gonna keep trying.
I found a neat app on Google Play. It's for the Samsung Galaxy series call 'Galaxsim Unlock' and apparently once you download the app it'll do all the unlocking for you — ie. No entering the code yourself. That would seem to bypass my problem. I emailed the developer, 'Spocky', asking if there are plans to have an app like that for the Moto X and/or if he might know a solution to my problem. Fingers crossed!

Sim unlocking doesn't void the warranty. They should help if you still have service with them. If not, then don't bother. They don't care if you already switched to another carrier.

Lol... Sim unlocking doesn't void warranty. Who told you that? Its worth a shot giving AT&T a call since you don't have many options.

It's not that I switched service from them, it's that I bought the phone second-hand from someone who had AT&T service. It's IMEI is clean though. I reside in Canada so I couldn't get AT&T service as they don't offer service here. I don't think they'll help although I'll probably try to contact them since I have nothing to lose.
I'm starting to suspect that if I was able to put an active AT&T nano SIM in it then I might be able to get the network unlock prompt back by using some of the #codes like ##debug# or #073887*. When I try those with my Bell Mobility SIM it says unable to access network. I think I'll try purchasing a $10 or $20 pay-as-you-go AT&T SIM online and see if it nets me any progress. I don't want to sink too much money into something that might not work but another $10 won't really hurt. Otherwise, I was considering a trip to NYC the weekend after Christmas so I might have another reason to go.

With any luck it will work, who knows what rules Motorola has in place with respect to unlocking the phone.
You probably already know this but if you buy another just grab a Rogers or Fido phone, there is no problem getting the unlock code. The Rogers/Fido version also supports 2600 Mhz LTE which you should have access to. The AT&T phone has the hardware to support 2600 Mhz but the 4.2.2 version has it disabled. The 4.4 leak enabled it but I don't know if the official release left it enabled or disabled it. The Rogers/Fido also allows bootloader unlocking which is great if you want to flash leaks, root etc.
I've been able to pickup both of my Moto X's for great deals on craigslist locally.

The only thing ROGERS doesn't have is Moto Maker ...and my 'business', I suppose. I dealt with Rogers for years and finally had enough of their lousy customer service. Honestly, Bell is now getting on my nerves too. I suspect I'll be a Telus client in the next couple years haha

I hear you there, I've never been a Rogers customer in my life. I was with Telus for 21 years, same account/number. Just recently switched to Koodo because of a very special plan and Telus was not interested in offering anything remotely close to reasonable. Of course Koodo is Telus so I didn't really move much, the joke is on them, I get more service for less money.

No I am still unable to get the 'Network Unlock Code' prompt when I insert the 'foreign' SIM into the Moto X. My last chance will be a trip to Buffalo next weekend where I can try inserting an active AT&T sim (who it's locked to) to confirm it'll still work on AT&T and whether that'll be enough to get the code prompt to come back when I put a Canadian SIM in afterward. Once I at least confirm that it still works on AT&T then I'll sell it to an AT&T customer if I can't get it to work in Canada.

Hi there, I received a brand new Moto X from Motorola this week. I contacted their customer service and after they verified the SMEI number to confirm the phone was not labelled as lost, stolen or from a delinquent account, they gave me an email that contained a promo code for me to use Moto Maker and customize to the version of my choosing. They also provided me a Fed Ex label to mail in my old Moto X that was not functioning properly : )

[Q] Best unlocking option for no-contract Moto X (AT&T)

I should be receiving my no-contract Moto X, AT&T branded, on December 18th. I need to get it unlocked so that I can use it with other GSM carriers. One of the senior members here recommended that I get the T-Mobile version because it comes with unlocked sim. I spoke to Motorola - I
would have to return the phone, get a refund, and order the T-Mobile version.
If I can find a good reliable unlock for AT&T Moto X, I will just keep the phone and unlock it. Any recommendation/suggestions for a good reliable unlock?

unlockcode247 and cellunlocker both worked for me. Have the AT&T version myself. Took a couple of days for the code to be generated. Many have had success with these two sites.
You should be able to just enter the request at the official AT&T device unlock site. Just google "AT&T device unlock".

To build on what roopesh said, AT&T provides unlocking services at their discretion. Information about this can be found here: att.com/deviceunlock/.
Most of the time, this isn't a problem and AT&T will remotely unlock your device for you (takes up to 24 hours after confirmation). Although sometimes, they will decline to unlock your phone for a multitude of reasons.
AT&T reserves the right to deny any unlock request that it concludes would result in an abuse of this policy or is part of an effort to defraud AT&T or its customers. AT&T further reserves the right to alter this unlocking policy at its discretion without advance notice.

As long as you're in good standing (basically means you don't owe them any money), it should be an automated process in which you'll end up waiting a day or two. If you encounter any questions, my recommendation is to claim that you're taking the phone overseas and will need to operate on international GSM providers.

Galaxy S8/S8+ Device App unlock is now available....for $125

I found out about this maybe 3 days ago and posted it under S7 forums since I have GS7 but I think someone might benefit from this information around here.
At swiftunlocks.com, they can unlock your t-mobile S7/S7e or S8/S8+ but that price tag of $125.99 is ridiculously high IMHO so I'll wait the price to come down or I'll just resell my phone.
I am in no way associated with that website, just spreading the word since I have used their services for over many years and there was never a failure, at least in my case.

If you use a 3rd party unlocking service for T-Mobile phones, you run the risk of getting relocked at any time, and you're **** out of luck (and that money). Once T-Mobile decides to run their occasional rescan, you'll be locked up again.
You're better off putting that $126 towards paying off your phone, and just having T-Mobile unlock it. Hell, I got mine from Samsung, and T-Mobile unlocked it within a few weeks. Just had to call and ask.

Although I agree with your reasoning, not many people can unlock devices through T-Mobile. I don't have their account and person I bought my device from is out of my reach. Phone is not blacklisted, it is fully paid and is bought on samsung.com. 3rd parties are my only choice, even TMO/T-Force representative directed me to them after refusing to help because I'm not their customer (and will never be).
I believe this is a permanent unlock, and it's better than nothing we used to have, but even if it's permanent, still, this is very, very expensive.
$126 for an unlock is just BS, especially when 99% of phones can be unlocked under $50
You can unlock 2 phones every 12 months at no charge directly from T-Mobile. If the carrier unlock app is not working, you probably bought the phone directly from Samsung like I did. Call T-Mobile, tell them you want to unlock because you're going out of the Country, they'll ask for the IMEI, submit unlock request to Samsung, retry the app in a week, done.

did they ask you for a tmobile account? I have tried calling them but once I let them know I don't have a tmobile account they stop helping me. they have asked for it every single time I try (5 now).

i think you need to be one of their customers, because when i talked to T-Force on FB, they ask me verify my phone number. well, I found one listing on ebay for $160. But might as well sell your phone. And get different carrier like ATT, the unlock process is much easier/cheaper.

This is correct, the T-Force rep on twitter sent me a link to log into and verify my active account status on my.t-mobile.com.
Well...the Metro PCS unlock app services are falling in price so hopefully the T-mobile services will follow suit? Oh and I totally tried converting my T-mobile S8 to a Metroc PCS one but the Metro device unlock app could not connect to the server so sadly the T-mobile device unlock app on a T-mobile firmware is still the only option =(

I dont get it. Metro PCS and Tmobile is pretty much a same company. Yet, there is a huge price gap between them @@

Question att denied unlock request

I just purchased a Samsung S21 Ultra AT&T version from samsung.com and paid the full payment. I requested to unlock my phone in att's website but my requested was denied because my service hasn't been active for at least 60 days.I do not have any payment installment and contract with AT&T since I paid the full price when I bought my phone. I tried to call ATT customer service 800-331-0500, but each time I said unlock phone to the phone robot, the call was disconnected and directed my to submit a unlock request online. I am current using Cricket Wireless, and the the sim card works on this ATT locked phone. I want to unlock it because I would like to flash the XAA firmware. Does anyone have experience to handle the unlock process with ATT? Thanks in advance.
Update on 3/16/2021:
I called ATT retention department and talked with 3 reps, but no one was able to solved the issue. Two rep said they were not able to unlocked a phone without 60 days ATT service or let me ask samsung to unlock the phone, and the third one directed me to fill the unlocking form in the https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ again. This request was denied within one hour, claiming "Your IMEI number & device don't match". This reason is different with my first request. I am very confused with their unlocking system. After 24 hours (this afternoon), I submitted an online unlocking request again. Surprisingly, this request was approved within half an hour. This is a happy ending, but I hate this hassle progress.
Hope my experience can help someone else.
Call them again and ask to talk with the Customer Loyalty Dept aka Retainment Dept.
Escalate the case if needed.
If nice doesn't get it, hound them.
If bought with a Master Card you can file a claim for a refund (you need return the phone first).
Trust me if you're assertive with AT&T you'll get it done. Been there, done that... many times

Escalate the case if needed.
If nice doesn't get it, hound them.
If bought with a Master Card you can file a claim for a refund (you need return the phone first).
Trust me if you're assertive with AT&T you'll get it done. Been there, done that... many times

You can play with them. The CEO gives their reps a lot of leeway to resolve problems.
You just need to leverage them a bit sometimes.
Consider it assertiveness training.

The reason I bought a ATT locked phone it the 256gb black unlocked version is out of stock.

At the worst you'll only need to wait 60 days to comply with the contract.
Speed is always expensive...

It is not unusual for a Carrier to have this kind of policy - TMobile has a similar rule - I don't know about Verizon, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did too. Like someone said earlier, if the OP complains long enough, there is a very good chance he will get what he wants.

I had AT&T unlock my S4+ as I was in compliance with the contract.
They are contractually bound by that agreement.
They are only obligated to fullfill the terms of that contract although they may choose to alter it on the OP's behalf.
One point to remember though is that they make most of their profit by providing cell service not the devices.
The OP should carefully check the buy out clause(s) in the contract as well as any state laws that apply ie contact the State Attorney General's office.
I found this thread when I did the research. It analyzed the potential reason why ATT's unlock system is problematic.
