Hi Guys,
I have been looking for an tablet to read my scientific pdf files and it seems the Kindle 8.9 and Nook HD+ are suited perfectly for that case. I was even planning on buying an anti-glare protector to make it more comfortable for the eyes.
The Nook HD+ was more attractive to me, since it is alot cheaper and the display is even a little bit better (in terms of brightness) than the one from the kindle 8.9. Also I like tinkering around with Android.
Since im from Germany I would have to get the Nook HD+ from the UK (which is no Problem, through ebay or amazon), this makes redeeming the warranty very hard though. This normally isnt an issue for me, because I can easily replace hardware parts myself many times..
After comparing alot, I also noticed that the Nook HD+ Battery is NON-REPLACEABLE!
There are many sources for buying the Kindle 8.9 Battery and even tutorials on how to install them.
Are there any for the Nook HD+ ??
This is the only thing holding me back from buying the Nook HD Plus Otherwise it would suit me perfectly..
And 2 last Questions:
1. Is there a working Standalone Android for the Nook HD+ which replaces the crappy B and N android and runs from internal memory??
2. Is there a working standalone android for the kindle 8.9?
Thanks in advance guys!!
I can't think of a current production Android tablet that has a user replaceable battery.
The out-of-production Toshiba AT100 has a user replaceable battery.
The "emmc" install of cm10.1 (see the development section) runs from internal memory.
You are right, atleast not officially.. But for most mass-produced tablets you can buy and replace the battery anyways, even with the ipad!
With the kindle fire 8.9 though, its no problem to buy a replacement battery!
That means, that in 1 year or so, when the battery has run out, I wouldnt need to throw the kindle 8.9 away!
Like this its more of a one-year product to throw in the trash can then
Still, Im strongly leaning towards the Nook HD+
This is from the FAQ section on http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Support-nook-hd-plus/379003760
10. Can I replace the battery in my NOOK HD+?
No. The rechargeable battery in your NOOK can only be accessed and replaced by authorized service professionals.
So yes battery can be replaced.
The battery in the Nook HD+ should be good for two or three years before it needs replacing. Maybe longer as my older Nook Color is over two years old and still has a strong battery.
Yes the is an excellent, standalone, Android for the HD+ If you look at the Android Development section, look at the EMMC install. It is the latest release of Android. There is also a hybrid install that permits you to experiment with stock B&N and Jellybean at same time.
gamba,
Don't know about the battery but if you go with the Nook HD+ and find a good anti-glare screen cover, can you post in here because I want one as well and I'm not sure which one to get.
The HD+ really is a great deal. I love mine, especially now. The screen is phenomenal. You won't be disappointed with it I'm sure.
Andy
Simple solution
Just get squaretrade. It covers non replaceable batteries. Its like $44 for 3 years. Plus you would be covered for other accidents.
Battery replacement
I just found this, they sell replacement batteries for lots of different devices: Nook HD+ Battery Replacement Kit
I'm not an advertisement bot, I have one of these and Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 on it is very stable. It's pretty funny that these guys say that the device (Barnes and Noble's Android) is too slow to consider purchasing, because this device never feels slow to me.
Yes you can
You can replace the batteries yourself. Go to YouTube and search for the video "How to Replace Your Barnes and Noble Nook HD 7" Battery". There's also one for the Nook HD9". You can buy the batteries at Amazon. Sorry, I wasn't allowed to post the outside links.
I got my 88 year old mother a (used) HD+ a year ago for Mother's Day and installed 10.1.3. She uses it mainly for games. She tends to let the battery run down to nothing. Last time she did it, she says it won't turn on even though she put it on the charger for a full day. I'm not close by. I told her to hold the power switch on for a full minute but I haven't heard if that worked. Anything she should try?

If the battery drops to near absolute zero (happens sometimes) you have to plug it in -it will show a battery icon on screen- wait a about 5 - 10 mins, the screen will stay on (it gets hot if you leave it too long, which is also why it doesn't seem to charge much) then press and hold the power button till it goes off, then press and hold again so it starts to boot up. ensure the original charger remains connected at all times during this. If you dont have the original charger use one that is capable of supplying 5v 2000ma or more. It is worth noting that if she lets it stay charging in the with the battery icon showing it not only does it get hot, but it actually damaged the battery on my GFs nook (hummingbird).
I would suggest to your aged mother, that she turns it off when she doesn't intend to use it again for a while.

Has anyone found any sources for a replacement battery. My Nook HD+ won't hold any charge now and has becomes somewhat useless.

The bad thing is the battery is $59 and a used Nook HD+ with a warranty is $79 on ebay

How does the Kindle app look on the NC? How is the usability?
Very nice. Very good. I have a kindle and the nook is my favorite kindle reading experience.
Odd, that.
I like the new update on the Kindle app. You can change the background to sepia or black. Make it a little easier on the eyes depending on the time of day you're reading.
I've also attached the APK for your convenience. Good reading
boo on AZW
Why boo on amazon? There's a crapload of free books from them through their market.
i have a kindle and the fact that i could get a nook and still keep my whole kindle library is cool. and the idea of using both devices at the same time (thanks, whispernet) is tempting. nook color at home in the evenings, kindle on the road.
sounds like a great combination.
edit: i just realized this was in the dev forum, this definitely belongs in general or Q&A.
Just purchased (free) a bunch of children kindle books from amazon but when I open them on the kindle it looks like all the images are missing. Any Ideas?

Interesting perspective...I also have a Kindle (3rd generation) and am struggling with having both a Nook and Kindle. I just don't feel "right" having both...I haven't actually read any books on the Nook yet so not sure how I'll enjoy the experience. I'm also concerned about the battery life. I kind of figure if the Nook wins me over I'd give up the Kindle, and if it doesn't, I give up the Nook...
Likewise, I have the Kindle3 and Nookcolor. As an actual reader, lol, I would often carry several books in my backpack, messenger bag, comuter bag, or whatever I put my stuff in when I'm out and about.
So, having two 'books', the NC and K3 in this case, is no big deal and still a net gain since each usually weighs less than any of the tomes or magazines I (used to) carry around.

That makes sense...how do you feel about having to keep up with 2 devices being charged? I'm very concerned about the battery life on the Nook overall. People don't seem to be posting much about it and my experience is telling me maybe 5 straight hours of use. If I get into a book I've been known to start reading in the morning and not stop til I'm finished, well over 5 hours (8 - 12). I think the Nook can be read while plugged in so for my marathon sessions at home that works o.k., but I seem to be losing anywhere from 1 - 5% in idle (non use)...so the Nook appears to be a device that will require daily charging to ensure it's ready to go when I am (like my phone) whereas the Kindle really can sit for 2 or 3 weeks and still be fine (WITH wifi on).
Yes, handling multiple devices can be a problem, a nice problem to have ;-)
A technical problem if I may, has anyone figured out how to get the cover to show in the list of books in the case of a .mobi book that's been dropped into the \kindle folder ?
I've tried renaming, resizing (seems to want 60x91), etc...no go :-(
The Kindle app works very well on the Nook.
Better than the Nook ereader, I think-
it will swap to landscape mode, while the Nook Color does not.
I keep wondering WHY as well.... the Nook reader software on my phone flips, why not the ebook?
Boac to the original question: it really does work well.
My sister wrote a book which was released for Kindle and I bought a copy.
She was very surprised to see that the color illustrations were in color and looked great. She had previously only seen it in print or on a Kindle.
But the slider at the bottom doesn't seem to be accessible, because once you tap the screen, the regular nook menubar will show up on top of the slider, making it (almost) impossible to use the slider underneath.
unless of course, u get sometimes lucky and are able to pick that 2 pixels of slider shown on the screen with your 1 inch thick finger.
(besides the touch resolution of NC is not super good)
So my original nook has sadly died and it is out of warrantee. So now the question is go with the old school nook or with the nook color.
I love the look of the new device but the battery life leaves a lot to be desired. I have an epic 4g and the Xoom already so I know just how the peeps here at xda do with improving such things. What are the general opinions on how that is going for everyone? Is it worth buying with the xda enhancements or should I stick with what i had?

If you have a xoom already then I would not buy the nook color. I mean, you already have a pretty bad ass tablet, so there really would be no point in rooting it; unless you want two tablets. If your just going to use it as a ereader, then the nook 1 would be a good enough. Hell even the kindle looks cool with its electronic ink, and they just dropped the price on em.
This is just my opinion, but if you already have a xoom then I'd assume you're using your Nook for reading books. Seems the Nook Color and the Xoom can function basically the same -- so one option is to load Nook and Kindle apps on the Xoom and be set. No idea how the Xoom does 'reading' in the sun... so if you really want a dedicated reader, I'd almost vote for going with the original - can be found refurbished for about $100.
That said, the Nook Color does everything I'd want and more. I can read in the sunlight at the kids ball games, I can run CM7 on the SD card and do anything android does... A few minutes ago my daughter and I got a N64 emulator running and played mario kart just for kicks.
Thanks for the input all, I'll stick with the B&W. I gotta say the battery life on the Xoom is amazing. I was running heavy for three days before I even realized it does not charge off of the USB but rather off of a dedicated wall charger. Guess instruction manuals do serve a purpose sometimes.
It's already been pretty much said, but if you got a xoom, pretty much no point. That said, I would vote for the kindle, as much as I like my nook color... I do find the kindle excellent for reading during the day, and it's definitely a lot nicer than lcds are to the eyes.
That said, I've never played with an original nook so I don't know how they compare.
Gin1212, magoo's going with the original monochrome Nook -- it has the same easy reading screen as the Kindle, but none of the Kindle's stupid downsides, like not being able to borrow a library book or use other ePub content.
But what I'm thinking is that if magoo can afford a Xoom then he or she just might want to get a Nook Color instead of a Nook -- the extra $100 might be worth it for occasionally reading color magazines or using tablet features when he or she's not carrying around the big Xoom.

I have both the nook color and the original e-ink and wouldn't want to give up either. For reading the e-ink wins hands down for me. Reading on the color is very unenjoyable for me. If I read on my notebook or color before trying to go to sleep at night (the time when I do most of my reading) I toss and turn for over half an hour before finally falling asleep. Reading a real book or the e-ink nook I doze right off almost as soon as my head hits the pillow.
The color is a great device and an incredible budget tablet that's almost completely replaced my notebook as a living room computer. But for me it's no replacement for the e-ink classic nook as a reading device.
As for the magazines I've subscribed to two (Rolling Stone and Food Network) But will probably be dropping them both soon as I find the experience of reading them on the color to be very disappointing. The max zoom leaves you with images smaller than if you had actually bought the paper magazine, and I have to keep zooming in to read (or switch to article mode which defeats the whole point of having a color magazine since it strips it down to just text which I'd rather read on my e-ink nook.) then once zoomed in panning around to follow articles I often end up accidentally going back or forward a page...which means having to re-zoom. I spend more time fussing with the display than actually reading and for me that's no fun.
The kids books are nice...but the B&N offerings are overpriced and under featured compared to the kids books available in the standard android market. My daughter is just barely 11 months old but she's already having a lot of fun "reading" the kids books I've bought and loves exploring the page finding different things she can touch to get a response.
I know other people don't mind reading on an LCD device, but for me it's a deal killer as a reading device. I spend all day staring at a LCD so when I get home and relax the last thing I want to do is stare at another.
If I could afford a xoom I'd probably go that route instead of the nook color, I could live without the magazines and as I already mentioned I find the kids books in the android market to be much better than B&N's. But I'd still keep my e-ink nook for when I put the toys away and am ready for a good read at the end of the day.

My experience exactly, you really nailed it. It's funny, I bought an e-reader and I use it for everything BUT reading books and magazines. I bought a couple of issues of Consumer Reports, and I've just found it difficult to read for the reasons you listed.

With the touchpad you have the advantage of dual booting (once you install android). WebOs is great, I spend almost half my time there. It doesn't have as much app selection as android, but that's why you have a dual boot tablet.....
I own a couple of cheap chinese tablets, and there is no comparison, you'll be using the tp yourself and leaving the Asus for your son....

A minor issue with Android on the Touch pad is that at the ,moment the microphone and the camera doesn't work. Other than that Android on the Touchpad is awesome. Once you use WebOS you will realize that this is how a tablet is supposed to be used but I found that there really isn't much to do in WebOS, which is quite sad, and that's why I mainly use Android. Also if your Asus is rooted then get Titanium Backup and just restore the apps he uses on there onto the Touchpad so he won't lose his place in the games he plays or lose the settings in the apps he uses.

I think there is also an issue with the touchpad which drains about 15-20% battery a night while not in use. It does not have this issue while running webos.
WHile the camera doesn't work (and there is no eta on it), the mic in fact DOES work. I have tested it with Groove IP, Andy, VLingo and Alice. This is a recent development from the CM9 official nightlies. Here is proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzpCNzDdjAQ
Since the TP is not an official android device, occasionally some apps and games (more so on games) will say not compatible. This is easily fixed with some build.prop tweaks though. It has no removable SD card storage so you will not be able to expand. There is also a program limit that, when you hit it, the TP gets a little testy. If you stay under it, you're fine. Those aside, it's a GREAT and peppy device especially if bumped up a bit via set cpu or something similar. Unlike another poster, I spend 95% of my time in android and not webOS. Since it dual boots, it's handy because you'll have storage access even if one of the OSes is crashing. BT keyboards work as do BT gamepads like the PS3 one (and even a Wii one I think). Also, the TP benchmarks pretty well.
One of the major reasons why you should do a rooted TP over a chinese tablet is market access. Chinese tabs are notorious for having ultra limited apps available unless you do a market unlocker.
Edit-forgot. With my screen off at night, I only lose about 1% an hour at best. I've seen reports of the major drops but it doesn't happen to me.
thanks all of you guys, I got the TP and I love it, my son too. by the way TP got a better screen than the transformer, the colors are warm and shiny.
You can make it real easy for your son with the TouchStone. Its an inductive charging stand. So, you never plug in wires, just set it in the base when done. My kids use mine all the time, and not having to worry about them yanking on it and breaking the cord is a relief for me. The official HP case is pretty good too, good protection, built in stand, and you can still use the TouchStone without taking it out of the case. Plus it isn't the fingerprint magnet the naked device is, and the microfiber lining keeps the screen clean.
The TouchPad was such a surprise to me when I got it. It outspecced the iPad 2, great build quality, and cool accessories. If webOS had the app selection Android did I would prefer webOS, its smooth, fast, and intuitive.

Or wait a couple of weeks and buy a Google Nexus?
I just bought a 32 GB Nook HD+, haven't opened it yet. I bought it for one main reason - read books - epub and pdf. I'll do about 30% - 40% web browsing as well.
I did some research and learned Nook HD+ has the best display. My questions are:
How much better is the Nook HD+ screen in comparison to the Asus TF 300's IPS 1280 x 800? Viewing angle and brightness, I like to read out door under shade.
I also heard that Nook HD+ wifi is weak, how bad is it?
I have a Asus TF 101, I'm satisfied with its wifi. Any body has experience with these two?
Thanks in advance.
Old thread I realize, maybe this analysis will help someone else though.
HD+ was better for me all around.
-I had 2 TF300s over the course of two years and they both became increasingly sluggish doing even simple tasks, and multiple reset/formats didn't solve any issues. HD+ is always lightning quick in comparison, even though benchmarks still put the TF300 as the faster unit
-screen is so, so much better on the HD+, it's not even really a comparison...it's like HD vs SD television
-battery life rocks on the HD+ and lasts easily twice as long as the TF300, I am not even sure standby uses any battery on the Nook
-wifi is fine for me, I really have had no issues with it
-for $150 there is not a better tablet that even comes close in terms of competition with this thing
My only complaints for the Nook so far have been:
-wish it were 1" bigger
-audio is not the best
-mini HDMI would be nice
-Flash is a PITA to install
Funny that you would compare the two...

Up until about a month ago, I was going to buy the TF300. It wasn't until I read something about CM for the Nook HD+ and the lowered price that I actually seriously looked at the Nook. The Nook hardware specs were so good, and the price was really good, too, so I took the leap and bought a 32GB model. Brought it home and rooted it that afternoon.
I can tell you without a doubt I made a great decision. I love my Nook! :good:
I have also owned both, and I absolutely reccomend the Nook over the Transformer. Not only is the screen immensely sharper on the Nook, but it also has much better colors. The Transformer has serious issues with saturation in which its always washed out, regardless of it having IPS tech. My 2 cents...

Not sure what all root does over stock, but I was going to root just to get rid of the awful B&N home screen. But then I downloaded Nova and it took care of that for me. Now for all intents and purposes the Nook is just like any other Android tablet to me.
I had the nook for a few year, I enjoy the books, my wife plays the games. Recently, it starts turning pages without being held, and while playing games it goes to different screens. have done a soft reset with no help, BN tech support says its out of warranty and will not help, anyone have any solutions?
For starters, I would suggest trying a different charger. I have one that is very sensitive to a certain charger and freaks out, yet it is fine on others.
i will try that

I'm a little late in the game but I guarantee almost 100% that it's the battery. Even if it shows a full / good charge, it's not. My nook tablet started doing the same thing after about 4 years. I ordered a new battery from amazon (not OEM but it works great). My tablet runs good as new now. Try it out. Search for 3200mAh Li-Polymer Battery Barnes & Noble. It's a little lower mAh than the OEM battery, but my tablet will run a good 13+ hours plus or even longer on standby.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/general/how-to-updating-hd-hd-internal-emmc-to-t2863171 for info/pointers -- it was written for CM11 but the same process can be adapted for CM13 by using the desired CM13 ROM zip file and corresponding GApps 6.0.x package (http://opengapps.org/#).
I agree with Ericco79 suggestion that it is your batteries causing the problem. I started having this problem on my nook running CM12.1 a couple of weeks ago, with apps opening by themselves and the book reader moving through pages by itself. I followed un4tural's suggestion of replacing the original nook batteries with 2 LIS1520ERPC (originally meant for Sony Xperia Z) from eBay for £10. Original nook replacement batteries are now difficult and expensive to source. My nook is now working great again.
