REALLY bad battery life, is this normal? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heya,
I've used my One for a few hours now, I'd say moderately heavy use (checked facebook/twitter, downloaded some apps, watched a few youtube video's, played Dungeon Hunter 4 for 30 minutes or so, checked flipboard).
I'm amazed by the poor battery life, especially since all the reviews were so positive. Will it get better? Could I have a faulty battery? This is nowhere near the 14 hours people have been talking about...

you can't tell yet. @Zepid, look for better battery stats xda edition and install it and post the screenshot for kernel and partial wakelocks, other and process.

It's hard to really tell with the default battery monitor, try BetterBatteryStats or GSAM from a full charge and go from there.

Also turn Power Saver on. It limits the CPU to 1.1GHz, and won't even affect gaming performance, or anything else for the matter except benchmarks. Click on the Power Saver option to customize what gets turned on/off.

You should check out the thread that talks about battery saving tips. It helps a lot and make sure you install a custom Rom such as trickdroid.
It's very battery efficient.

Don't forget that if you install a custom ROM, you'll need to root your One. That also means loosing your warranty

DH4 is a beast on battery in my experience. It is hard to play that game and not burn a ton of battery.
Anyway, when I don't play DH4 I still get 5 hours screen time. That's without power saver, auto sync disabled, and Lux adjusting screen brightness. I'm sure if I used power saver I'd get much longer.

Seriously, give it a couple of days!

I have found my battery improved after about a week of having my phone.

Graphic intense games like Dungeon Hunter 4 EATS the battery.

Thanks guys, the Power saving feature definately seems to help, and it's not slowing down the phone at all. I'll give it some time and see if the battery life improves.

I have to agree, my battery life is pretty poor. I'm going to give it a week and hopefully it clears itself out.

You should allow more time, at least 2 or 3 updates, to iron out the biggest bugs. All manufacturers need that time, apple en Samsung too.

[Q] What to do Against battery drain?

I now have one week to the Nexus One bought secondhand. It suits me perfectly stand alone I have a little trouble with the battery life of the phone. Morning when the phone is 100% and I come out of school (14:30 hours) the battery is still around 20%. I find this a bit short. Ok, I'll use him at school (bit Internet, twitter refreshes every 9 minutes)
There is an automatic task killer, and that helps a bit but I think there are about 80% after 8 hours battery life is a bit much. Me internet is also constantly and I really like to keep.
The battery is probably not because I've got 2 batteries and they both give the same result.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
I've been a bit inet searched but not really found anything. I did see somewhere a separate battery behind the phone, but I'm not waiting because that makes him a bit heavier and uglier.
10% per hour is pretty poor battery life. Are you running stock Android? 3rd party firmwares can give you much better battery life (the latest versions of CyanogenMod are using less than 1% per hour when fully idle).
But there are things you can check. Have you looked in Settings -> About phone -> Battery usage? If you are using Gingerbread and you look at the graph, if there is a solid line (or mostly solid) next to the "awake" portion, it means that your phone isn't properly entering its low powered state. Download spare parts from the market and check out partial wake usage under the battery history section of that app.
Please post your screen on time value from the battery menu so we can see how long your screen is on.
I would say to go and disable background data. Disabling this will definitely improve your battery life. Of course, you aren't going to get you twitter updates but aside from that, the battery life should improve.

While it is true that battery life would improve if Background Data was disabled (or limited via a program like Juice Defender), it doesn't take into account his actual problem. Unless it is a ton of apps constantly downloading that is keeping his battery usage in the toilet, this will only yield a slight improvement. I believe the cause is is an app (or apps) that prevent his phone from entering the low powered sleep state.
I don't know what stock Android gets from completely idle use (haven't run it since July last year), but a basic CyanogenMod install would sip between 1-2% per hour with the latest stable and the latest nightlies, some are reporting 1% every 2-3 hours when the phone is left alone (due to a fix that lets the microphones go into a deep sleep state).
Twitter refreshing every 9 minutes can not be helping, that said I doubt that's your entire issue but reducing the refresh rate should help quite a bit.
If you bought it used, it could be a bum battery. Not sure i know what apps work best to find out that info. Anybody?

The battery app in my sig is the only one that reads the chip inside your battery to tell if it's legit or not, what the battery age is, etc. Needs root to work though.

battery consumption problem caused by bad voltage handling?

so I downloaded somekind of battery widget that have graphic log on the voltage and I noticed that when my new optimus 4x's voltage jumped between high and low it cause the battery to drop rapidly... CMIIW, I can't help but feeling that this is very much like those happened at contemporary desktop CPU that constantly adjusting voltages, however with the bad efficiency one, not sure if this is LG's fault or Nvidia's, anyone here have article reviewing/explaining the Tegra 3 platform? CMIIW, the CPU is Nvidia's right? or is it somebody else's CPU?
anyone else noticed similar behavior? any suggestion on improving the battery life?
When root will come out, definitely will improve battery

alot for me is about 10 calls, 20-30 messages, wifi, data and sync on at all times. navigate during work, check rss feeds and email a couple of times / hour. play wordfeud and rumble with notifications.
maybe im not as heavy user as others but thats alot for me and i dont feel any change in batterylife from my meizu mx or htc desire. u get 2150mah battery in this phone, compared to meizu mx or desire with their 1500-1600mah but u also have double the performance and alot bigger screen, why would it last longer?
LG states that some apps cause battery drain. I have read it in some internal b2b document from LG site. One of the apps mentioned was poweramp. Don't know if problem is fixed with newest firmwares.

[Q] Battery life... Issue~

Hey guys! About 5 days ago I got my self a new HTC one (Dev, unlocked)~
Info: I'm running the latest Trick-Droid Rom, with Juice Defender(Free: Says i'm getting 112% battery life from it), Greenify, and Nova launcher~ And my case can sometimes run a little hot, something like 1C too at most 3C above no case temps.
Right now i'm getting about 5 hours and 20 minutes of web-browsing time on my battery, and with all these "Optimizing" apps... And the high reviews of the HTC one's Battery, i'm wondering if might have an issue on my hands?
I know I have not given enough info for anyone to give a diagnosis, I just want to know if I need to start digging for leaks!

I'm not using any battery saving apps or anything like that, I'm all stock, I have everything on except finance stocks and stock weather, I do a lot of web browsing, texting, music and that's about it...a few calls here and there. You may just need to give it a few more charge cycles...I don't believe in all those battery "saving" apps or "optimizing" apps.
Get "wake lock detect" and "better battery stats" to determine what's going on.
And my battery life isn't as great as some people's here, but it's pretty awesome to me.

I spent about an hour testing stuff... I found a major drain in the form of SH (Shell) stuck in some run away process, after deleting Storage/Bin/SH 3 or 4 times it seems to have fixed it self~
I think I will best sending in the bug too *TrickDroid* to see if they can get it fixed.... Deleting the SH file has made some small issues pop up from time to time~
Is this okay? Or is the performance low?

That's decent, 4-5 hours of screen time seems to be the average.

Battery Life stinks and phone gets hot

My battery life is pretty terrible. Running stock, power saver, and Snapdragon battery guru. I have to charge the phone 2-3 times a day. I use in moderately to light through the day. At night, it will drain almost completely while I'm asleep. I had a Nexus 4 before and battery life was way better than this, same location, same apps, etc. I don't feel like I should need to turn data and wi-fi off to get more than 6 hours of virtually idle phone life from this device. Is this typical?
I find the phone is hot a lot too, when I am not even using it.
Please try to find out what causes this drain with the following app and post results after 1 unloading cycle

I downloaded it. Shut phone off and letting it charge, then going to see how fast it drains. To boot, its been on the charger for 2 hours and it has gone from 9% to 62%. Something must be wrong.
With stock my phone battery life sucked as well.that's why I rooted it and running a sense 5 Rom.. and it's so smooth I have my kernel UC to less than one gig speed and it still move fast without the overheat

Definitely not typical...
I'm fully stock and not rooted. If I dont touch my phone it can last over 24 hours with data on (noticed this one weekend when I was too busy to play with the phone).
I use the Battery Widget Reborn app and it says a "Fully charged battery usually lasts: 18 hours 8 minutes" for me.
Sounds like theres definitely some kind of app in the background thats draining your battery and making your phone hot.
This is pretty typical battery life for me with data always switched on on a rooted stock 4.2.2 rom and was also pretty much identical on an unrooted stock 4.1.2 rom.
The main thing that saves me a ton of battery life is disabling apps that I don't use. By far and away the Facebook app is a massive culprit for killing battery life.
I'm very interested to see the gsam results when you post them.

I did this procedure that HTC instructed me to do to reset the battery/charging system. I think it may have worked. No excessive heat and a drastic improvement in battery life. I've attached a screen shot of the gsam though. Just curious what you thought of the results

Well it's a definite improvement over the sort of battery life you were describing before. There are always ways of improving battery life but as has been said many times before it's all a case of where and how you use your phone that will be the main factor.

I got a very poor battery life. What should I do?

Hi everybody. I know that's another topic about battery life but I really need some advice. I have the canadian S5 model (Snapdragon). Since I got it, I never got good battery life. My usage is only net browsing, text messaging, facebook and a bit of game. And i'm always on 4g. I give you a picture of my battery life. Sometimes, I only got 2 hours screens on. For me it's not normal but it is?

I went into applications manager and turned off all the extra stuff and bloat I dont use or need. Since we dont have root thats the best available option without uninstalling system apps you dont want. I also have ART turned on in General/Developer Options?Select runtime system. It makes the phone a bit more snappier and a bit more RAM effectiant friendly. Some say it doesnt do anything to battery life but since Ive had it on I do notice a small increase in battery life. I think it comes from the better RAM usage.

In addition, I like to install a battery monitoring app such as GSam Battery Monitor. It gives you a better per-app breakdown of battery usage. My poor battery life was all Android System so turning off built-in apps helped me there.

do you have Location services enabled?
By disabling that i found a few apps that were using it that surprised me, while the phone was otherwise sleeping, reducing those apps significantly helped. Leaving location service disabled helped the most.

Is something keeping your phone awake?
What game is it? Have you compared a day without gaming or browsing to a day with it?
On the battery monitoring app advice, be careful. Stay away from ones that offer to control the phone. I've seen and read that those kind can make matters worse on the S5 and the one I tried made my battery got (weird, but true).
