This drove me nuts after we had our first baby and I used group messaging to alert friends and family. My understanding is that "Send as individual messages" does not mean it will start individual conversations with each person but it will create an individual thread with each person once they reply.
This is from HTC's website: https://support.htc.com/en-ie/005-HTC_One/060/020
Here is another XDA thread that I found helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2218358
I think everyone will see all replies no matter if you select "Send as individual messages" ... the only difference is how the HTC One will display the replies. A group MMS will combine everyones replies into that one thread, group SMS (unchecked box) will show each persons reply in a thread with just that person (though everyone will get that SMS).
make sense? (not really for me either)
I hope this helps!
Update: I sent a SMS and MMS and checked send as individual messages... The recipients did not see each others replies. I have group messaging turned off in settings.
Send as individual does nothing more than create individual threads upon replies

I've come across an burdening issue sending a txt with multiple recipients. Though the grouped chat style text messaging is an incredible advantage, there are some cons and i'm wondering if they can be fixed somehow.
Because of the chat style text messaging, your first outgoing message gets coped to your inbox. Is there any way for the first outgoing message to NOT be copied to your inbox?
This poses an issue for when you are sening a mass/group text message. For example, if i send out "Happy New Year" to 50 people in one text, i get 50 outgoing copies in my inbox.
Suggestions?
It doesnt really get copied, The threaded sms app just shows that you started a conversation with those recipients. I do see what your saying though, and i guess it can get somewhat annoying having all those open conversations in your inbox, BUT now you only have those 50 or so threads in your inbox as opposed to (like me) thousands of messages to scroll through. Plus as an added benefit you can see who replied in an orderly fashion. I for one would like the option to turn sms threading on/off, but I guess this is progress...

Well as much as i love it, i would like to see that the program doesn't show the started conversation on the first initial text message. It should show it when they reply. This would solve the group text messaging issue

If it's even something that can be edited... might be part of the program's code.
I'd like to be able to move the messages into another folder but cant seem to find out a way to do it as the option isnt highlighted

Hey guys and girls,
Just wondering if anyone would know how to create a 'favourite' list from contacts? I'm looking for something whereby you can run through your contacts, select 'x' number of people and have them in a 'group' you could send a mass text message to?
Any info would be extremely useful.
many thanks.
?
anyone? just a few pointers would be cool. If anyone would like to collaborate on this app more the merrier!
google voice lets you send mass sms...no sms plan required.
It's not a contacts app, but Handcent will let you send mass SMS messages. Its a great app, and free. Lots of options, and think you can set groups with it. Good luck.
Is there any text programs that's capable of doing group text meaning it can send/receive group text and puts it in one text message not individuals ones for each person I send it to?

Pretty much all of them do - Handcent, GoSMS
And just for info, threads like this are supposed to be posted in the Q&A section. FYI.

I have GoSMS and I haven't found out how to set it so that the group texts are in a group instead of individual texts. I always get them as single texts from people (so I don't even know they're group texts). Do you know what settings to change to get it to show as a group?
Title pretty much says it. To clarify: we are starting to experience not receiving texts. When we discuss with the sender, we find they have sent to several people at once.
Is anyone else experiencing that? Any fix?

Is the sender an iPhone user? iPhone group texts go out as MMS, which Google Voice doesn't support.
Hmmm....that's interesting. Given so many folks are iPhone users, that could almost negate the value of GV, as it relates to using for texting.
I know that not all of the folks sending them are iPhone users.
I know I have gotten texts from my sister who I believe is an iPhone users. But now I need to double check that.
My wife was with her friends this morning, and thd texting discussion came up. Turns out that many strange things happening for them when sending to a group: some get them, some don't; some get them as if from a different person than who sent it. I'm beginning to think that SMS group sending is just problematic. I would tend to think that maybe they are doing it wrong, but I don't see how a person could even do it in a way to hve a message look like it came from someone else.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I agree that it is odd. I never noticed it until recently, although it that could be due to me not paying attention as much as anything. I wouldn't have picked up on it at all except that I use GoSMS with popups and, instead of showing the message when I get a group message from my wife (who has an iPhone), I get the MMS icon. Click on it and you get the message.
As far as I can tell, iPhone (and maybe others, I'm honestly don't know) send their group messages as MMS. If another iPhone user replies to it, all of the original recipients get the reply. If I reply, only the sender gets it. I think it has to do with if the message goes out as an iMessage. I don't know what makes an iMessage special, but I do know that my wife can't send one if she doesn't have a data connection, which would support the MMS theory. I'll look into it more when I get home from work tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.
I dumped Google Voice due to it's lack of MMS support as well. You just can't expect people to remember to send pictures to one number and text messages to another, it's just not a realistic expectation. I just use it for voicemail now.
I did validate that I do get text messages from my Sister, who is on an iPHone.
But regarding pictures, I don't really get or send pictures, and don't particularly care. If I want to share pictures, I typically do it on Facebook, or put on my picture site, and send links.
I do feel though that GV should support pictures. I don't know if that is in the future for GV or not.
I am a little confused. Are you saying that when you did use GV, you did get TExts from iPhone users, but if setn to a group you also got it ,but only sender got your reply?
Again, we do get individual texts from iPhone users, but not when they send to a group...at least not consistently.

I worded it strangely. What I meant was that on my normal phone number (not using GV), if I get a text message from an iPhone user it comes through as a regular text message. If I get a group message, however, I get it as an MMS. If I reply to that text, just the sender gets it (I believe anyway), but if anyone with an iPhone replies, every recipient (including me) gets their reply.
Since Google Voice doesn't support MMS of any sort, I get the same behavior that you are describing: on my GV number I can get text messages sent just to me from iPhone users, but I don't get any sort of group text sent from an iPhone to my GV number.
Thanks for the clarification.
I suspect that the ones my wife is having problem with then are iPhone users. I'll have her double check.
Yep. Found out group text msgs from iPhone won't come thru to GV. Come on Google....
Do any of you know if the HTC One supports group SMS/MMS messaging like the iPhone within the native Text Messaging app?
Meaning, if someone (on iPhone) sends a text message to 10 people (MMS), my reply will be an MMS message back to the 10 people, and all the people responding in that group will be contained in one thread?
I have an HTC Sensation right now, and it only does a reply-all that sends 10 separate SMS messages to each person. This isn't acceptable to me when trying to maintain a conversation.

If you have a look, i might be wrong, but i found this earlier, when you goto Create Message, put all the contact in as per usual, then there is a statement with a checkbox saying 'Send as Individual Message' uncheck that box, and hey presto. . . group message.
Hope this helps. . .

That's good that i can send a new message out like that, but what about on Reply? Is that checkbox available? And if other people are replying, is it all grouped in one thread?

I definitely would try it out if i had the phone . I don't have it yet, and want to make sure that it can support it because a lack of Group MMS is a show stopper for me buying the device.
