Hi there, I'm thinking of changing from one Custom ROM to another and I'm wondering if there's any way to preserve my app settings/data? I have CWM and I hear that I can make a backup using that and then use Titanium Backup to extract and install apps from that backup, but will that restore settings/data? Another thing I was wondering about is carrying across contacts. I also have Link2SD installed which moves apps to a partition on my SD card then creates symbolic links to them on the phone, but will these apps be included in the backup or cause any problems down the line? Finally, I'm currently running a ROM (Troll of Steel) based on CM9 and the one I'm planning on switching to is also CM9 based. Is it worth switching to CM10 or CM10.1 (I hear CM9 is less laggy than CM10/10.1 on Aces) and is there any way to get the stock camera working on CM9 ROMs?
Any help is very much appreciated, thanks!

Okay, so here are 3 questions, not 1.
1. You may try Titanium , although I have never used it so cannot comment on it.
2. Yes all your Apps (even the ones linked to sd-ext will be Backed up as they are.
3. CM 10/10.1 are still facing some issues, while in CM 9 most issues are solved in Final 3 version by Maclaw.
And lastly if you find any CM 9 Rom with solid battery life do lemme know.

Hi CarteNoir,
You can use CWM (5.0.2.6 fixed) for making a rom's nandroid backup: so if you then restore that backup (from CWM), you reinstall the same rom with the same settings and apps/datas (all of them).
You can use Titanium Backup for backup apps/datas and then restore individually/bunched in the same or in another compatible rom.
You can use nandroid manager for restore apps/datas directly from nandroid backups in the same or in a different (but compatible) rom within that last rom (as nandroid manager is an application itself, it doesn't need CWM for restoring).
All my best.

I'm fairly new at this rooting thing, I initially rooted stock, and then went on to a custom rom someone on the board made. However, I'd like to play with other ones, but I don't want to have to reinstall my apps every time. Is there a recommended way to backup, and what exactly should I be backing up?
I've installed Titanium Backup and backed up most of my apps that way, is that the preferred method and all I really need to do?
Thanks!!

I had a bad experience with using the "Backup" and "Restore" options in Recovery completely destroying my Nook's boot partition, so I'd personally stick with Titanium Backup. I paid for it, and it was well worth it. This let's me install any ROM and with literally a single tap, all my apps are reinstalled.
Titanium Backup is just amazing. It's probably one of (if not THE) the most useful apps ever for anyone who frequents XDA. And free, if you don't mind tapping for each app. Just don't restore system files etc (ie the "red" colored apps).
Depending on which recovery you are using, you may have to use the accompanying kernel...

Q I installed Titanium Backup and it is driving me nuts, it creates the folder on my SD card, says it's complete, but the folder is empty. I tried just the apps, apps and system, but still the folder is empty. The notification note says complete with the time, but still an empty folder even after I deleted it before a new backup.
Auto-nooter 3
Uninstalled TB, and reinstalled it, works fine now. Must have been a flakey install.
I find appbrain the easiest solution to reinstall my apps. Then if necessary, use titanium to restore data.

Personally I run all my ROMs from a MicroSD card. This way I don't have to worry about screwing up my Nook and I can pop the Card into my PC and use "dd" to make Images and Flash them back. It makes switching ROMs quick and easy and if I decide I like the New ROM I can use Titanium Backup to mass Restore(Pro key needed) all my Apps. If I don't like the ROM or if something bad happens I can just "dd" a Backed Up Image to get my my Old Install back and it's like I never switched ROMs. Aaahhh.... Life is good.
PS: I keep Two cards, One for my Everyday ROM, and the Other for Testing.

Hi Guys,
I have flashed my Note for the first time, I've gone for Rocket Rom V21.
all is working fine, however I had to do a wipe for the rom to work, so I'm missing all the text messages, app/settings, and calendar dates.
I do have a backup from yesterday done with CWM.
My question is, how can I apply or retain all of the above on my newly flashed rom?
Thanks
I think that the backup you made is localised to your ROM. So you may be unable to use the backed up data in the new ROM. Or you might have to modify/move somethings. Best of luck

Well I have restored my backup sucessfully just to check it, because people always reccomend having a backup of your working system if you are going to flash new roms.
The backup is functioning perfectly with all my texts and calendar dates in tact.
So I have an opportunity to back up these items, so what would you reccomend to do this?
Should I be using Titanium backup?
Titanium Backup will backup all Apps and Settings. I believe the newer versions of titanium Backup can extract backed up files from nandroid (CWM) backups.
if you wipe then it wipes the internal memory (dont confuse this with the 11gb storage space) you need to back up the messages with an app that will allow you to do this
if you have root then i use mybackup root if you dont have root then there are plenty of apps onthe market that will backup and restore your messages
I suggest you restore the previous ROM; install Titanium Backup and execute a backup of "all user apps + system data"; flash again your favorite ROM, then restore the apps + data you want.

So, I finally have got my hands on another Milestone which means that I can play around with different ROMs as much as I like and still be able to be sure that people can call me on my stable phone. But, installing ~20 apps by hand and restore of messages every time is a pain in the as and therefore I would like to simply make a backup on the SD card and apply all the apps.
I thought that I could simply make a backup via Titanium Backup to SD-Card 1, copy that content to SD-Card 2, install TB on my other Milestone (which uses SD-Card 2) and just restore that way as you do every time you install a new ROM but no, TB can't find anything to restore.
Any thoughts how I should do?
*Milestone 1 uses CM 7.1.5 and Milestone 2 uses CM 9 4.0.4
TB allows you to change to change the directory on the SD card it uses for backups. Make sure it's looking in right one on the 2nd Milestone.

Thx man, turned out the folder with the backup was inside the TB folder (sd/TitaniumBackup/TitaniumBackup/"all backup files").
Well, TB manages to restore some of the apps but not all of em...hmmm...
Think I'm going for installing all the apps by hand insted, takes longer but at least works. Hehe.
As my understanding is with app2ext (default with Kabaldan's CM ROMs) to install all apps you need only copy them from MM1's ext into MM2's ext. During restart all apps should get installed. Obviously its just apps no data, but here the TB may help...
One command, if moving from one ROM to an other do not copy the lib dir from the ext partition.
Hi guys.
I want to try a custom rom.
When i had my legend i used to flash it without backup, i had my stock andoid and besides that i didn't have any apps that needed backup, i only wanted to keep my files (photos/music).
Now, on my note, i have a lot more.
I want to make a total backup, including all of the progress in my games, my whatsapp history and such.
Does a cwm backup do all this? I mean i haven't moved any of my apps to my sdcard, but i can imagine it has some system things on there?
Because i also want to do a full whipe, at the moment i dont know what files are being used and wich not (both internal and sd card storage)
Also, i want a way to copy all of my apps (including whatsapp history and game progress) to my new rom. Will something like titanium backup do trick?
And a final question, when rooting with exploit method (link) it doen't install an other kernel. I've read it isn't save to whipe on stock kernel. I also know with every rom there is an built-in kernel. But, if i'm right i have to whipe before installing the rom. Do i have to install an save kernel for the whiping? And wich kernel would you guys reccomend?
Thanx
First of all its good that you have read that it's not safe to wipe on stock ics kernel.
You have not told us your current rom. If you are rooted install, philz or hydracore kernel which is safe. Yes you will need to wipe before flashing a different rom. And a backup made in CWM will backup everything. And TB can be used to restore data of user apps likes games and all. But it does not do a good job restoring system apps like contacts and messages logs etc. Use super backup for that.
change a new Rom with the best performance means:
full wipe (cashe,data,preload,system)
also not restore app (at least app data) from titanium backup.
so, install all app again and make setup for all
guys, how do you this? I have already xxlsz a mounth installed, everything is working, but I know, new rom could be better.
otherwise I am tired of restoring...
sometimes I am thinking I could be happy with a iphone so simply

Have you been downloading all of your apps every time you flash a new ROM ?
You can restore user apps and data.
Just don't restore any system app/data
Got it?
for me the RomCustomizer by ficeto is great app for restoring, backuping, uninstalling apps, and I never restore any data. If the app which I use have option to save/restore settings I do that (and this kind of data is usualy saved on internal sd) same thing is for gps navigation programs (maps are always saved on internal sd)
so after flashing new rom, first thing is installing rom customzer, then restoring user and also some system apps (I do backup of some system apps which is updated, it saves my time from updating via playstore)
and thats it, new rom is set up in about 30min
this way I dont have any problems with any rom and any app I used
hope it helped to someone
till now I just have restored some user app+data from titanium, some download again from market. never restore system app or data.
once I have deleted my internal card and download all app again cuz some people had problem with performance of that rom and this want recommend. also I wanted a bit clean my phone.
ok, now I am confuse. it's safe restore user data or better just save data if the app has this in option and then restore?
thanks guys.

Both are safe. The latter method requires you to individually restore data while in the former you can batch restore data. Which one you want to use is up to you.
so for the best performance of a new ROM is NOT nesesary format internal card and NOT restore app+data ?
Make ROM CUSTOMIZER backup of app with or without data? (I didnt find this option like in Titanium Backup).
