Hello,
Below is the message i wrote on the google support forum, but i havnt gotten a single reply yet, so i turn to you guys, in hope that you're able to help me
I have been experiencing this issue on and off for the past month or two. The issue being, that something called "Android OS", in the battery usage list, is eating up all my battery.
An example is, currently my phone has been unplugged for 1h30m(im down to 69% battery life remaining after i unplugged it at fully charged 100%) where the battery usage is ranked as follows:
Android OS: 72%
Display:18%
Wi-Fi: 2%
Cell standby 2%
Android System 2%
and so on and so forth.
The reason why i wrote (kernel) in the title of this question, is, that with the app "Powertutor" i have been shown that the main "app" or proccess eating up my battery, when this "Android OS" is eating up my battery as shown in the Battery Usage list, is the Kernel. Right now is shows the kernel is using 84,3% of the energy usage, Handscent has been using 3.1% and so on.
Often a reboot will bring the phone back to normal and the Android OS issue goes away for a while. A friend of mine, however, who has the exact same phone as I, has this issue, almost all the time, and a mere reboot doesnt seem to do the trick for him. His phone only lasts 6-7 hours tops, where it most of the time is just idle, and he isnt using the phone at all. While mine, when the Android OS issue isnt present, last up to 20 hours on a single charge, when i dont use it much.
When the Android OS process is eating up all the power, the phone grows really hot as well, and the difference is easilly felt. So when i feel that my phone is hot like that, i automaticly think "oh, time for a reboot".
I've been unable to find any info regarding this issue on the internet, and therefore I'm unsure what to do to fix it for real. Tried several factory setting resets on my friends phone, tried not installing many new apps, formatting the SD card, formatting the phone from bootloader (still testing his phone to see if this worked properly)things like that, but always, the issue returned, as on my phone where it only pops up once every other day.
Hopefully, someone will be able to help, or shred some light on the case.
Thank you,
Chris

"Exchange sync" being exactly what? The basic sync function on the phone that can be enables and disabled? The basic sync with your google account?
If thats the case, then yea im having that on all the time, so that it may sync whenever it wants to. The sync icon doesnt appear that often though, so cant see how this could be the reason why. But if you come back to me and tell me that this is what you meant, i will definetly give it a try
Thx for responding
No, Exchange sync means - MS Exchange account (in addition to your default Google account) that syncs calendar/email/both with Exchange server.
I'm guessing again that that is something extra you must install / set up, which i have not done. The only two accounts i have that can sync are my facebook and my default google account. I never sync the facebook one though.
Edit:
Update:
Reinstalled Watchdog Lite today, since my phone has been exceptionally sluggish, and SeePU graph keeps showing a full graph on cpu usage. I've had to reboot it twice today, in hopes of it returning to normal state. It does for a while, but then returns to a slow state where Android OS uses like 80% of the battery.
I made Watchdog Lite monitor the base android processes as well, and right now it keeps warning me that the "Base System", "Linux Process" uses up 89,6% of the CPU and 10,3MB of RAM, while nr 2 on the list is Android System, Foreground, with 3,8% and 27 MB.
I feel like the state of my phone is worsening, and I'll prolly do a full factory reset(again)/format of everything within a few days if i cant find the root of the issue this time around.
Please help I love my phone and i want it to be healthy again.

"OS" is an abbreviation for "Operating System". That means ALL of the background stuff that eats battery and CPU time that isn't attributable to a process or function easily understood by the typical user. This includes, yes, the Linux kernel, but also all the other background things that your phone does in order to continue functioning in a normal synchronized state...
Your phone has a CPU. The kernel has a process scheduler, which swaps different programs in and out of the CPU in order to make it look like it is running more than one thing at a time. Each clock cycle consumes some amount of the power from the battery, so if it assigns 10 cycles to process A, 10 cycles to process B, and then waits for 20 cycles for I/O synchronization, then HALF of the power consumed in those last 40 cycles (attributable to CPU) will be "Android OS". Clear?

Alright, I was wondering exactly what it meant when it just said Android OS, just that seemed like quite a broad description.
But what your saying is that it may be other applications that is actually eating up the power, just the kernel assigning the power to the program, and therefore the Battery Usage shows the kernel/Android OS as the culprit?
If its the case that its an app then, that through the kernel is triggering the usage that drains my phone, then how come my friend had this issues with an almost "naked" phone? He had installed just a few apps and still ran into this issue.
Am i understanding what you're telling me correctly?

It's not normal, something is causing it. Most likely some poorly written app or some other weird thing is causing the "Android OS" (which I assume is likely the virtual machine itself) to do bad things.

Today the linux process "init" has been hogging up all my phones resources, as in 77%+ of all the CPU usage :/
Was wondering if rooting my phone and installing/ flashing some custom rom would solve the issue for sure? Or should I send the phone back to the states for at checkup or repair? (dont think this is needed but now I ask anyway)
Is there an app that could track down exactly what is sucking my phone dry? Cus all that I've found are those broad references or processes :/
Thx for all your responses

There is no solution, because you can't track the app that is causing the system to hang.
You can uninstall all the latest installed/updated apps and install them one by one, using Titanium - and that'll pinpoint the offender.
Well, hi guys, I have been a member on this forum for quite some time but due to bad memory I forgot my account so I made a new account, that's not my point of this topic.
I bought a new Galaxy Note and I simply love it, awesome phone, but I noticed something wrong. Yes! the battery...
My battery simply dies in 2 hours of usage (videos or listening to music while playing Wordfued)
I want a solution for that, I have my warrantry and all, shall I demand a new battery or something? I'm Swedish by the way.
And I'm sure you'll ask me about flashing a rom and root it.
I know that would make the phone faster, but I'd rather wait for the official ISC.
Only if I can do both of the things at the same time, if so then I will flash, please do read everything so you can watch from my prespective, thanks in advance.
That's definitely not normal. I get much, much more usage doing the same, so I would definitely try changing battery first and then changing the phone as a second option.

Fully agree.
I would get 4 to 5 hours of continuous use, I reckon. Some people report more.
I think the problem is with the battery. you can try this :http://www.amazon.com/2600mAh-Batte...I84K/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1329085625&sr=8-4 . Just bought it and it give me like 6-7 hours of watching videos.
Thank you for the link. I was looking for a better battery. I home to find a vendor that ships to France though.
Thank you

Thank you my dear sir, I'll take that as the second option, I'll try getting a new battery since my warranty is vailed for 2 years.
Thank you though
No need for an extra battery or extended battery.
Install juice defender
Leave brightness on auto
disable 3g (it is on by default I believe and I noticed a big savings on batt %)
disable auto screen rotate(optional)
my phone is @ 44% left , lasted 11 hours 2 minutes , This will last me another 5-6 hours.
Did about 1 hour of gaming (myth defense)
30 min browsing on wifi
45 min on tapatalk
1.5 hours on the phone
1.5 hours streaming music to my desktop via kies air
I had posted something like this before...
1. Flash and test different kernels in case of battery drain. Some are easier on your battery than the others.
2. Use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall crapware. This list is a useful guide as to what can/can't be removed from your system: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
3. Set Brightness to low value, disable autobrightness
4. Disable or scale down vibration and haptic feedback
5. Automatic syncing of your accounts is battery consuming. Sync manually if you can
6. Set screen timeout to 15 seconds
7. Disable fast dormancy (dial *#9900# and do it from there)
8. Don't keep your WiFi/Packet Data on all the time. However, if you must have WiFi on the second you wake up your phone, go to Settings/Wireless and Network/Wi-Fi settings - once in Wi-Fi Settings, hit the menu button (the bottom left one), choose Advanced/Wi-Fi sleep policy/When Screen Turned Off. This way your connection will toggle on/off depending on your screen on/of state
9. Disable location services via wireless networks - are you travelling that fast that you need those?
10. GPS is heavy on the battery, therefore use it sparingly
And don't use Juice or any other battery 'defenders': they keep running in the background and consume your juice by trying to save it. Not to mention other problems they can (and often do) create.
Hope this helps.

I have found this too, although YMMV.
I use Llama (Location Aware Mobile App) to turn things of and on when I move about. I seems to work very well mostly:
1. Got rid of useless apps, and kill all listeners on new apps so they do not pop up (require root)
2. When at home or work, WiFi is on but sleeping when screen is off (this is the one that fails most often - need to monitor), data is off (to prevent use when WiFi is sleeping).
3. When out and about, data is on, sync is off (to save mobile data & battery).
Like this I can get very flat battery level graphs when the phone is asleep, which is what I want.
When the phone is awake, the only thing you can do is turn the screen auto orientation off (I use Llama to turn it on for certain apps), and keep the brightness down, and use dark themes for everything, really. Turn WiFi off when not using it would also help.
I just wish they had made the battery larger & thinner (as someone else said) so that a thicker battery could have been more effective still, like triple the capacity
Try disabling GPS, wifi and data connections when not in use to save battery. Also you could flash the latest abyssnote kernel. It has absolutely amazing battery life.
i have problem
when i make call and end the call
i found in task manger phone file open (green phone icon)
and its not closed
i found that it take alot of battery
so i have to make end task every time after i finsh incomming or outgoing calls
anyone have a solution??
its meant to be like that!
it is meant to be like that, the phone keeps the app in memory to decrease time it takes to open it the next time, mostly useful for those who make a lot of calls. apps might be closed imidiately depending on memory- and cpu usage, try using the "back" button instead of "home" and see if that works
It's not the "phone app" that kills battery, it's you making calls, and that is sorted to "phone" by the battery monitor. Just leave the dialer open, it doesn't matter.

You can do like I do... I place the Task Manager shortcut in the main screen and everytime a finish a call or some other task I just open it and click on Stop.
Its a matter of get use with that, takes 2 seconds and don't hurt no one... Or you can try to find some app to do that and loose the battery for that app.

The battery needs some charging cycles to get to its full capacity. Did yo uhae any difference with closing the dialer app? Because I don't think it will do any difference. It's the same with RAM, a typical failure is to think that it has to be empty, but it is handled different and therefore it doesn't matter for the phones speed if it is full or empty. That dialer app stays open, so what? And it is pretty normal that calling takes more battery than wi-fi. Mobile data also takes more battery than wi-fi. And when making calls you have a permanent active mobile connection. There is a reason that companys always print two battery times, one standby and one calling.
Don't panic, get used to it. I don't think your battery life will increase. Only possibility for that is to flash the latest software and disable some of LGs stuff, e.g. Smartworld app.
Use task killer and will stop any program that run as standby , also, I would like to advice LG 4X users to use Battery saver to save more BATTERY LIFE. I have installed one and test it. It really make my device super and extend the battery life.
Best regards,

This is the worst hint you can give. Everyone who has owned an Android device for quite a time will know that taskkillers are among the most unuseful programs you can get, because they'll randomly kill apps and make the system unstable. Once again: It doesn't matter how many apps are open! Your RAM will always be freed. This is not Windows! And for battery usage it is only important if apps running in background keep the phone from deep sleep, and that's the minority of programs. And for those which keep the phone awake, it's mostly intended, like mail apps that poll the mail server every half an hour. Get yourself some information about how Android works, it helps a lot.
If you want to know about wakelocks, use the "BetterBatteryStats" app. It can be found somewhere on xda for free (older version) or for a small fee on the Play Store.
wpa_supplicant ad-hoc
need a "wpa_supplicant" make ad-hoc to may laptop....
I don't think killing the Phone app will make much of a difference, have you tried exploring other power saving methods? personally I find changing governer settings on screen off saves me quite a bit
Hi, I got a new Sony Xperia T yesterday, and it's on 4.1.2 (it's bootloader unlocked which really sucks because I was looking forward to getting some custom ROMs). I installed JuiceDefender as Stamina Mode isn't (yet, hopefully it does come soon) available on the Xperia T, but I seem to be getting the Stamina Mode icon in my status bar. Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help is greatly appreciated.
1) If your bootloader is unlocked you CAN install custom kernels
2) Juice defender is not needed on JB roms (IMHO)
3) That is not the stamina mode icon, it is extended standby mode. Look for the setting in power management in settings.
Thanks for the reply:
Sorry, I meant it is bootloader locked, not unlocked, haha
Do you think you could elaborate on this and explain why? I found that the battery drained really quickly so I thought the best thing to do would be to get JuiceDefender, but I am certainly open to suggestions.
Thanks, I read elsewhere that it was the stamina mode icon so that's what got me confused!
The ROM handles that stuff better. I have not used JD since I got onto ICS. In the end it becomes more of a battery hog than it can save.
With stock apps like smart connect and location based wifi you can set up profiles that do what JD does.
If you have the phone new then it will take a week or so for the battery to settle down, so do expect big battery drain for a week, then it will settle down.
Thanks for the informative comments, I've read so many mixed reviews of JuiceDefender but I have uninstalled it and instead installed AutomateIt, and created triggers so that when I turn the screen off, it turns WiFi & mobile data off. Do you think this is a good choice? Once again, thanks for your help!
No, Leave the phone to do it itself
Extended stanby mode turns off data when the screen is off.
I suggest that everybody goes at least a month without trying any of these apps, you will see that (IMHO) they don't make any difference and can, in fact, make things worse by clashing with what the hone itself wants to do.
Ah okay, I shall try just using Sony's standby mode, and I'll uninstall AutomateIt. Hopefully this helps my battery (and hopefully stamina mode comes to the Xperia T soon too!). Thank you for all of your help.
I left my phone off for about an hour with extended standby mode enabled, but when I returned to use it, the 'History details' page showed that the WiFi was still on the whole time the screen was off:
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mine does exactly the same, not sure why and when it does this it doesn't really seem to save any battery at all is this normal behavior from the phone?

If you're like me and you are sadly having less battery life than you were on KitKat try following this guide, and see if this helps improve your battery performance.
Required;
No-Frills CPU Control
ROM Toolbox
In the below screenshots are how I set up No-Frills and my Kernal Tweaks for the governor (interactive). Also, powersave mode. You don't have to use gray scale, but it helps tremendously. I would use applications like leandroid, but for some reason they won't work. At all. If anybody knows a fix please share and I will update the OP.
Have any other tips? Share the knowledge with us! Have anything you changed and helped more? Share the knowledge! Many thanks will be given to those with knowledge.

Hey this is the developer of LeanDroid. I'd be happy to help if you are having issues, just ask in the LeanDroid thread!
Near constant usage of screen time. About 3 quarters of the way through was when I arrived home. Decided to go all the way and overclock my device and see how long it takes to die.
I am stock 5.0 and not rooted... I have been getting 6 hours + of screen on time with heavy use. I keep my data off since I'm always on WiFi at home, even when away it stays off unless I specifically need it for something... Not sure about kitkat, but lollipop has the automatic data feature, where, say u have your data off, someone sends u an mms message, your phone will turn data on long enough to download attachment, then turn itself back off again... pretty cool imo...

i guess my usage would be the equalivent of hypermiling a car.. This is the first run since updating, although didnt beat my longest run of 3 days. ive used power saving 24/7 since i got my phone and it was connected to wifi virtually 100% of the time. On screen time 3h 42min.

My battery use has been good until the last couple of.days. Given houses of the phone not being touched, lost 10%. Now I am getting this huge spike drops any time I use my phone. I might have to reset, just hate to. I'm in a microcell so signal is great. I haven't used power saving, just turned it on a few minutes ago. I don't know my brightness percent, but it is low. Any ideas?
Also a couple of odd things for me.. Why is this app showing in my data when I either uninstalled it or disabled it. I can't remember now if it is one that can only be disabled.
Oh forgot the screen on screenshot.
Corporate email account can really drain the battery
Be aware that corporate email account (both exchange or IMAP) can heavily drain the battery due to security setting in the background, regardless Android 4.4.4 or 5.0.1. I had an IMAP based corporate account (which enforces some security measure by adding the company as an administrator). I have only 20% left by 5pm with minimal usage. In the Battery stats, both "Andorid System" and "Android OS" show 20%+ usage. After I deleted the corporate account (moved to Aqua Mail), Andorid System" and "Android OS" shows 10% usage by 5pm. I usually have 50%+ left around 6pm with minimal usage.
