Hi all,
I am newbie in this foruma nd new in Android. I am going to get the Incredible S later this week. I would like to try to root the Incredible S. I read some of the treads, but I am a bit confuse here, hope someone can help me out. Here are my questions.
1) Can I root my phone with Unrevoked3 ? If so can I use the S-On tools to put it back to s-on for warranty ?
2) Before I do the root, I would like to backup my Rom. All I need to do is go to Hboot and choose backup. It will save my rom image right? If any bad thing happen, I can S-On than put it back my rom and everything will back to the factory setting ?
3)How would I know if my phone been rooted? I saw a thread said if there is an Icon (superuser) in the menu it means I am rooted?
I know these are stupid questions, hope someone can help me out in here.
Thanks in advance

1. No, Unrevoked3 does not work on the Incredible S. You need to use AlphaRev/Unrevoked Revolutionary (http://revolutionary.io/)
2. You need to have a custom recovery in place such as ClockworkMod to backup image of your ROM. Revolutionary has an option to install ClockworkMod during it's procedure. In order to restore the phone to factory settings, you need to make sure you have a RUU (Rom Update Utility) that matches your phone's version.
3. After you install ClockworkMod, you will need to manually root and add superuser to your phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122694
Thank you very much for the reply. I will definately giong to give it a try. Another question here, after I applied Revolutionary and the phone will become S-off. And I want to put back the factory image back, will the phone switch back to S-ON ?? From other threads, I think it will void the warranty if the phone is S-ON
Thank you very much
You can put your phone back to S-ON yes. Make sure you haven't updated your phone to 2.30.405.1 or you can't root or S-OFF your device.
Great thanks. So here is my steps for turn the IncS to S-Off and backup right ?
First I will have to use Revolutionary to turn the S-OFF
than I will use ClockworkMOd to backup my factory ROM (just in case i need to turn it back to S-ON and factory setting for warranty)
Once I am S-OFF i will be able to use one of the image for Root
Thank you very much for all the helps guys. I will give it a try and see how it goes.

You have to flash RUU according to your IS version. It does full restore your device to factory state. So yes it includes S-on and Htc official Rom so it would be just like when it came out of the box.
Edit: What's your software number? You may check at Settings / About phone. You need that to flash properly RUU to your device.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Hi thiagofbrito, thanks for the reply. Sorry I don't have my INcS yet, still waiting for it, but I will check the software #.
By the way , if I used clockworkmod. I can backup my ROM right? So if anything happen can I use that backup and rest it as Factory Setting with S-ON ?
Don't really undersatnd what is the RUU use for?
Thanks

Not exactly. ClockworkMod backup and restore only saves and restores the whole ROM image, but not the SecurityFlag setting (S-OFF/S-ON), so restoring a CWM backup will not return you to S-ON state.
This is where the RUU comes into play. As long as you have the RUU for your particular phone and carrier, that is what you would use to return the phone to a full Factory Setting complete with S-ON. In the Development section there is a thread that has alot of the shipped RUUs for the IncS.
Sorry to tag onto this thread but 1 more question.....if the IS is already set up and now would like to get it rooted, following the procedure won't reset the device and clearing out the data right? I know using Unrevoked won't clear the data but not sure about this one. Kindly confirm

No, the S-OFF and rooting process will not wipe out your existing apps or data.
Hi, I just received my IS, the phone already S-OFF , android version 2.3.3 , but it has some app I don't want. I know that I need to rooted before I remove those, can I root this phone ? Or I need to follow the unrevoked 3 proceduce and flash the custom rom ?
Thanks

Here is the procedure you should follow since you already have S-Off.

Thanks tpbklake , I also download the RUU. which is 20.2805.30. Just incase I need the factory reset and I need to put back the RUU right, will it still S-OFF ?? Since my IS already S-OFF

You need to have the HTC drivers installed.
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
I already did have the HTC driver installed. But when I boot the device in HBOOT, my PC wouldn't detect it right? or it suppose to detect it ? thanks
just tried again, now I can see the Fastboot USB, and when I do fastboot recovery (image) it showed writing recovery failed (remote not allowed)
is there something I missed ?
Thanks

No you haven't missed anything. The procedure instructions were for gaining S-Off using Revolutionary which installs a modified hboot that contains additional fast boot commands. So you must have a XTC clipped S-Off, so you simply need to install ClockworkMod by copying a PG32IMG.zip file to your SD card and letting the boot loader install it.
Shouldn't this be more like..
1. Download CMW's zip file (Available in this thread here)
2. Make sure the file is named "PG32IMG.zip" without quotes.
3. Put file in your SD card
4. Switch off phone
5. Pull out the battery and wait 5 seconds. Put the battery back in again. (This step is needed in case fast boot is enabled..)
6. Press vol down+power. HBoot (white screen with 3 android logos at the bottom) should load.
7. Wait a while.. it should pick up on your PG32IMG.zip automatically and install your custom recovery
8. Reboot into your OS and remove the zip
9. Go back into HBoot and then recovery. Use as you please (I suggest you take a backup first then proceed to flashing or doing anything else you might fancy )
Thanks for the reply. My HTC is not XTC cliped. I bought this at a retail store. When I checked the HBOOT is already S-OFF. So as you said, all I need to do is download the ClockMod and rename is as the zip file
Thanks
Hi tpbklake ,
Ok I tried to the instruction you provide earlier. I got the zip file, renamed and placed it on the SD card. HBOOT than I can see the HTC is saying Parsing the zip file, than i turn off the device and remove the Zip file from the SD card. And go back to HBOOT again choose recovery , and it show the red exclaimation mark . .. I don't know what happen in here, can someoen please help ?
Thanks
Hello everyone,
This is my first post so I hope I don't end up being a "typical noob".
I'll try give the full info but keep it concise.
Background:
1) Carrier Unlocked HTC One M7 Originally on Rogers.
M7_UL PVT SHIP S-On RH
HBoot-1.44.000
Radio - 4A.14.3250.13
Open DSP 26.120.274.0202
emmc-boot
2) The phone was working perfectly after being hard reset, and configured without a sim.
3) After it was activated by the telco, the keyboard would would no longer work. Dialpad fine... menus fine... but no keyboard would pop up when selecting text fields. Did a full factory reset, and also tried clearing the Sense Touch data cache via Settings->App.
4) After trying various possible solutions I found online, I finally decided to try start from scratch by installing stock firmware.
WARNING: i'm the second owner of the phone. For warranty I would have had to send the phone to HTC. I suspect the HTC warranty won't apply to me anyhow. I suggest that in this situation, people just get the phone fixed on warranty if they have that option
First Steps:
A1) I unlocked the bootloader via HTCDev and used adb to flash CWM Touch Recovery.
A2) Restored the "M7 CWM Nandroid Backup / CID ROGER001 / 1.29.631.17 (Rogers - Thanks to Whampahoofus)"
A3) Phone now works correctly at this stage, but is still bootloader unlocked/tampered + CWM Touch Recovery
A4) While I may eventually flash the phone to an official Developer Edition
I would like to reinstall a factory recovery.img, then use revone to get rid of the bootloader "tampered" flag and relock it. (for OTA Updates, and the usual warranty concerns)
A5) I tried flashing both the boot.img and recovery.img from "OTA_M7_UL_JB_50_Rogers_WWE_1.29.631.17_R-1.29.631.4_release_318662" to get back to stock recovery, but I got a Red triangle.
Questions:
Q1): Does anyone know of a stock recovery.img I can use with Rogers firmware ? (SEE UPDATE BELOW)
Q2): Is there some trick to getting the OTA recovery/boot images I tried....working ? Is there some cache reset of somthing that needs to be done after flashing the stock recovery/boot imgs ? (SEE UPDATE BELOW)
Thanks in advance !

I too am looking for a rogers ruu or even the M7 CWM Nandroid Backup / CID ROGER001 / 1.29.631.17 (Rogers - Thanks to Whampahoofus) since bugsys page is down.

A lot of the RUUs and nandroid files were apparently "saved" to "Crushalot's" site: htc1guru.com
you can also get the file links in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428276
I used that nandroid backup. I don't think a Rogers RUU exists (yet).
UPDATE ON MY PROGRESS:
1) I had success with using revone to get my M7 S-Off and removed the tampered flag in the bootloader.
I suspected that SuperSU wasn't working right becaue i hadn't been getting a root permission popup window on the phone.
On I reinstalled SuperSU, I got the root rights popup window when running revone, and it then worked.
2) I have realized that the firmware.zip, which is contained in the OTA update, contains the factory recovery and boot image I needed.
(I kept thinking that it was an incremental update and not a complete image or something, due to it's size.)
Therefore, instead of flashing the images individually, I used the firmware.zip from the OTA update to do a complete firmware update.
3) The Red triangle I was getting was, normal. I couldn't find clear info, so I assumed it was a bad sign because the only time i had seen the factory recovery was when it was upating with a red circle/arrow. So.. I thought the red circle/arrow was the icon you wanted to see.
Eventually I found a thread for a different HTC Phone, that also works for the M7
Result: You can use the volume up + power buttons to enter the recovery once the red triangle appears.
4) After installing the firmware (extracted from the OTA update), I used revone to set the phone back to S-ON, then locked it.
5) The OTA update then automatically installed, as a stock phone would.
6) After the OTA update, for some reason the tampered flag is back. I'll be using revone today to fix that.
UPDATE 2
:
6) After the OTA update, for some reason the tampered flag was back. I unlocked the phone, used revone to to get S-OFF, then used revone to reset the tamper flag and relock the bootloader, and then "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" to set S-ON.
After 2 reboots the Tampered flag was back !
I'm suspecting that for the tampered flag to stay off I need to keep it S-OFF, which defeats the whole idea of trying to return it to stock.
Any ideas ?
Anyone working for Rogers want to leak an RUU ? hehe
Did you use CWM to flash the firmware.zip in step 2? I'm trying to follow your steps to get back to stock to obtain my stock rogers update but i'm getting lost as to what you're using to flash, recovery or fastboot.

Tampered will come back the second you flash a recovery. Best to stay S-OFF
I've been in a similar situation where I had to send my phone in for repair and couldn't get the tamper flag to stay off.
I found out it was because I was trying to remove the flag and lock the bootloader and S-On on 1.29.631.17
What I had to do was restore using CWM back to 631.4 then flash stock recovery then remove flag, lock bootloader, then S-On.
The tamper flag should stay off you can try rebooting a couple of times then boot into bootloader to check.
Then I ran the OTA updates and i'm on 631.17 at the moment and my tamper flag is still off.
Hope this helps.
PS. I believe the latest JB4.3 OTA update upgrades the hboot to 1.55 so revone would not work on it. Not planning to try it myself but if anyone can verify this would be great

Thanks for the heads up. If I get a bunch of free time I may just test that after doing a new full backup.
Not sure about the Rogers 4.3 OTA.
I'm running currently the phone with Developer Edition ROM+CID and can confirm that it's 4.3 OTA updates hboot to 1.55.
After the update my phone is still s-off.
I have previously rolled back to an older hboot via a firmware flash.
Since the phone is still S-OFF, I assume I can do that again if needed.

Thanks For the reply Eddy.
Recovery flashing sets the tampered flag even if it's a factory recovery from an OTA being flashed ?
I agree on the S-OFF normally.
This was a test to see if I could get it back to full stock for warranty if needed, and S-OFF would not be acceptable in that case.

Simply doing a web search for info would have given you the answers on many many webpages and some youtube videos.
http://bit.ly/1a6d88A
http://bit.ly/1a6ewZ5
Quick answer:
1) Nandroid backups are created and used by the custom recovery "clockworkmod"
2)You need to install a CWM custom recovery (i like the touch version), then unzip the nandroid backup file to the /clockworkmod/backup/ folder. It will create a new folder there. I used the program "Android File Transfer" to copy the files from my laptop to the phone.
3) Once the backup file is on your phone, to restore the backup, you simply boot into recovery and restore the backup as explained in those web pages or youtube videos.
If you have specific things you have tried.... folder names... etc. then ask a question in detail.
You will then have a much higher chance of getting a correct answer (or even an answer at all)
Hope that helps a bit...
Cheers

Hello bklam,
Sorry, I missed your question.
No. I used CWM only to restore the "Whampahoofus"' nandroid backup.
That backup is "almost" 100% stock. Unfortunately it contains a custom recovery and won't (in my experience) work for normal OTA updates.
To solve this I decided to extract the factory firmware from one of the old Rogers OTA ("unrar" will extact the files from the OTA), and flash that.
To flash it I used the quick instructions in the 1st post of this thread-->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2182823
(I believe there were more details instructions on firmware.zip flashing in another thread but I can't find it at the moment)
Note to other readers: There can be confusion about the word "firmware". Some people use it describe the Rom.
In this case, I'm referring to the hboot, boot and recovery images in a single special file called firmware.zip. I believe in some cases it can also include the radio software too.
If I ever get a chance to get this 100% tested and figured out, I'll post a step by step method.
At this point it's just a overview of what I tried, and looking for other members advice.
Unfortunately, as you can see from my posts, it didn't work 100% for me. It gave me the stock Rogers HTC One Rom/software with OTA updates, but the bootloader still had the tampered flag.
Check out ysl00's post above. He/She evidently had it working 100% without the tamper flag.
Not sure if Rogers has a 4.3 OTA yet, but that might fix the flag since it includes a firmware update along with the OS update.
Post back with your results !

Good to hear. I read your post. I thought..."Is he using a root file manager ?" then read your next post….
I was also going to suggest a guaranteed way to determine where the CWM backups are being stored on a phone.
This way it doesn't matter which version of CWM, which phone or if the back directory exists yet.
Simply create a test backup and see where it goes. Then copy the Nandroid backup that you want to restore, there.
I should mention that I'm currently running my phone as a Developer Edition (Brightstar) 4.3 with OTAs, S-OFF, and unlocked.
It's works perfectly. Only the Carrier ID (CID) needed to be changed. The MID is the same.
I assume that a brightstar RUU will work on it now, even if the phone was locked and S-ON.
I have a few more things I want to tweak on it, then I'll likely make a backup and try restore it to stock rogers again so that I can create a clear how-to.
What's interesting, is that the Developer Edition OS seems to be the same as the Rogers Edition OS (without the rogers apps which can be uninstalled).
The only reason I think it might be a better choice is that the Dev Edition should get OTA updates earlier than the Rogers Edition.
I tried the custom Viper Rom 2.6.x but couldn't get an LTE connection. I suspect that was due to APN settings, but I didn't confirm that.
Anyone got the Viper Rom fully working on a Roger HTC M7 ?
Alright so I've successfully re-installed that nandroid backup and enabled s-off, re-locked, and removed the tampered notification.
When I try to do the OTA update it just hangs at the bug fix1. It default opens and tries to install it through cwm recovery, I've never done any OTA updates before so I assume this is normal?
How can I fix it hanging at bug fix1?

The OTAs don't work with custom recovery. You need the factory recovery
dear friend,
i just had my htc one s-off with firewater , and then tried to install viperone 2.6.0, after the script ran successfully in twrp 2.7.1 with aroma installer , my mobile is stuck on htc start up screen and constantly restarting, though i am able to enter into recovery.
then i flashed viperone rom again with same result, ultimately i flash ruu specific for verizon and again repeated the procedure but cant go past the start up screen
i am s=off , supercid, unfortunaately cant even have a stock cid with repeated attempts, it keeps saying, failed to write invalid cid,
please friend help me,
only reason i purchased one is because i want to run custom rom on it [ like viperone, insertcoin and all other awesome roms]
Il help as best i can but youve posted in the wrong thread for help.
hello there, il help as best i can but you have posted in the wrong thread for help and troubleshooting. post here instead.

But i will suggest going into TWRP or even stock recovery and wiping the cache and possibly data too. only wipe the data if you are ok with losing all your music pictures and sdcard contents.
if this dosnt fix it. then you are either on a too new of a bootloader version or a too old of a bootloader version. though thats just a guess.
the cid change rejection thing sounds a bit concerning though. What cid are you trying to change to? and what does the command lien say cid you currently have?
Or maybe u flashing wrong firmware and Rom. What device do u own?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
thats possible as well but im sure aroma would have rejected the install if the modelid didnt match but not sure if all aroma installers do so.
Sometimes when I turn on the phone I recive process.htc.dialer isn't respondning and then reboot. After some reboots it recognize 100% imei etc and the phone work. I have viperone 6.2.1. I think I have to flash ruu,but I recive some errors. My phone had the vodafone system so only with flash of a rom stock can be restore... but when I flash the imei and baseband etc unknow and can't run the setup because it reboot too early. So I can only start now the system with backups(because no need the setup). but,as I said, sometimes the smartphone work without problem. Maybe only way is to flash a ruu?? or other roms? I have hboot 1.57 firmware 5.11.401.10 S-OFF UNLOCKED. Maybe it have partitions errors?

Oftentimes when you lose the imei and baseband it is due to a hardware issue not a software issue. There is no RUU for your version but since you are S-OFF you can run the older RUU 4.19.401.9. I would run the firmware 4.19.401.9 first. Hopefully, that will help with your issue. Since, you will be stock after the RUU, you can apply the OTA if you would like.

If I flash this RUU,then I can restore my backup of vodafone?(maybe I try to send it to htc?). When I restored the vodafone backup I miss also the boot screen of vodafone(The logo of vodafone at start).. so? I think is a problem if I send it to htc. I think I can't flash any rom beacuse when I do it I can't run the setup because of reboot. So if I flash this ruu I delete all and the backup doesn't exist,so I take a copy of this.. and if the system doesn't start I can push with twrp the backup?

If you are going to send the phone to HTC, there is no need to restore your backup.
You should copy the backup and any other personal files off of your phone before running the RUU. The RUU will wipe your personal data.
When HTC gets the phone they ask for carrier so they can put that carrier's version back on to the phone.

Yes you should take a nandroid backup and keep a copy on your pc.
The RUU will return your software to complete stock software. If the reboots continue after the RUU it's probably a hardware problem.

Do you think is a problem that I send it to htc before for purple camera? (now I have green camera with flash xD) They gave me a new imei(so new smartphone) with vodafone software(because I send it with vodafone system) .. Don't they know that was with vodafone system? Tomorrow I try to flash the ruu.. Thank you.. also @Danny201281
@majmoz @Danny201281 yes is hardware damage... I flashed the ruu and the system doesn't go up and show imei and baseband uknow(htc.dialer.isn't responding while it's in green htc sign and white screen).. so I need to flash my twrp backup and return to stock... is possibile?
Update: I do the setup of the ruu with a trick of airplane mode on,the system starts, same issue but I see that the reboot occurs too late.I need a vodafone system and return to stock. I had the vodafone backup but I noticed that when I used it the splash screen and the telephone turn on,there isn't the vodafone logo.. do you undestand this? What steps should I do for return to stock? I am hboot 1.57 etc(look at the ruu) s-off unlocked. I need also a versione of twrp... what version of twrp should I install?

You can use this CWM nandroid http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-cwm-nandroid-backup-cid-vodap102-1-29-161-7-7z/

Italian Rom, UK rom it does not matter the Rom is the same for all VODAP cid's.
It's the CID itself that distinguishes the difference between regions

Because your backup is probably of a pre-setup Rom which already has the language selected. If you factory reset after flashing your backup you would need to go through the initial setup again and would have to select your language

Mmm remember the problem is that the system restart after 5 minutes.. so I can't do normally the setup beacuse he reboots too early and when shows the message of htc dialer isn't responding the setups 'freezes' so remains stuck in htc green logo and can't complete the setup(is a luck that I finish this setup of this ruu because I switch airplane mode on)

If you use the guide I posted your device will be back to stock before you need to boot the phone to Android. Assuming you want to send it for Warranty repair that's all you need. You don't need to setup the Rom. HTC repair centre will advise you to backup your phone and factory reset it before sending it in anyway. :good:
The only problem you might have is installing the first OTA,
You could use the guru reset Rom but with that you will need to manually flash a firmware package to match it. If you can find one, I'll see what I can dig up

I have bricked my Desire 510. I need a ROM to flash through philz touch recovery, if some one in Australia has this device with philz touch can you please make a backup in the recovery and then post it to me! Its my last hope because no RUUs are working.
Either that or make me a ROM that is for the Australian telstra 64-bit model maybe some ome can teach me how to create and compile it my self.
Have you tried a backup first ?

This seems like a Strange question I know, But have you tried doing a BACKUP FIRST ?
Now having had to rescue a couple of these phones (3 to be precise) , (all with the same nandroid backup I might add)
(With No help from HTC - where are the RUU links for our phone I have to ask?, that having been said, thanks HTC for letting me unlock bootloader, (still cool) I take it all back.....)
I have found however that if a flash completes but is no good , fails to boot for example, that if you FIRST, take a backup with philz of your corrupted system, - to allow the recovery to write a last log to (broken) system with mount points, phone specifics about baseband, serial no., etc,.. BEFORE trying to restore a Good copy of a nandroid backup
(hope you have one! )
That you should then be able to restore a nandroid backup to phone. sometimes even a nandroid that failed last time. (due to failing to find mount points)
A quick note on this point is that only backups made while booted into recovery have proven successful when trying to restore backups thus far, all methods of taking backups any other way are/will be corrupted and will not prove in any way useful to restore your device.
Most of the RUU updates are wrong bootloader by the way they are based on 3.4 kernel (32bit) and not 3.10 kernel which is what 64 bit is running.
I would offer you a copy of a nandroid myself but I am aware that radio firmware is tied to carrier and probably would not work for your baseband and carrier setup. If all else fails however you are of course welcome to try, (pm me if you need a copy) I dont think it will be too long before a successful port to our phone anyway.
Good-luck,
ki113r.

i have a similar case, i was able to get 64 bit RUU's from the internet (Asia WWE, and HTC Europe) but i can't flash them, the following is a description of the situation:
1. bootloader unlocked, custom recovery installed.
2. S-ON,
3. no userdata (system partition ?) i don't know the difference, i can flash boot (kernel) and recovery.
4. i can't flash the above mentioned roms since it is saying i have wrong CID, and i can't change the CID because S-ON
any tips ?
* i was able to download, compile & build kernel from source for telstra, i don't know how system (or userdata) image is built, any hint on that as well ?

Hi Mate,
i've got the following:
Code:
cid: TELST001
i was thinking hex editing the zip file to replace the cid, but since its zipped i can't find the plain text to get it replaced.
thanks in advance.
Have u relocked the bootloader and then tried to install the RUU?
I had the same problem with restoring the orginal Rom.
I think the command for relocking the bootloader was "fastboot oem relock"

I've already done that, having the bootloader unlocked will throw another error, this was incorrect CID related one.
my phone is on Telstra (Australia) ROM, sadly, the RUU exists on some Persian forums with paid service, if there is a way where i can compile/build the system image from source, please let me know..
