OK so what happens is this.
I'm listening to music on the external speaker after 15 minutes the sound goes quiet but still audible if you put your ear up to the grill on the back.
I pause the music cause I obviously can't hear it. Couple of hours later start music up again, it plays quietly for a couple and seconds then suddenly BOOM the speaker comes back to life at full sound.
Does anyone know what might be causing this and if there is a solution/fix?
If you remove the back cover and press gently on the speaker, it may improve the connection. There's a connection that goes flaky. You can try various things, like putting a ring of paper around the grill, but ultimately, you may want to send it off to mobile tech videos for repair. Unless you are handy with delicate hardware and want to try to fix it yourself.

The two options I've read are removing the back of the phone(not just the battery cover) and loosening the screw that holds the speaker in place. I've read a couple things about that screw being too tight and causing it to act up. Also I've read that the ribbon cable needs to be removed and re-seated to fix the problem. Personally when this happens to me I just tap kind of hard on the back of the phone near the speaker and that usually fixes it for a while.
I think that have the same problem, but i reboot the phone and the sound return!!
I made the test to hear close and yes, the music continue playing but with the less level of volume.
Emm i always think that it's a software issue but everyone said that it's a hardware problem?? I'm so confused now.
It's normal in this phone that problem???

Uff, but i have a question, what i need to repair this.
It's difficult open this phone???
I'm good soldering things and making that kind of works but my fear its broke something trying to unmount the phone, like a flex cable or the case or something like that.

The speaker begins to break up while i was playing music it would play every other word of the song I was wondering if there is a way to replace it?
try opening the battery cover...giving speaker a little push...some people reported that it fixed speaker issues..
Mine started doing this as well, and eventually degraded to no sound at all.
I was able to open my phone, remove the speaker module, clean the connectors and "reload" the spring contact thingy.. By "reload" I mean I very carefully bent it a little to create a little more contact pressure.
Hope this helps you a little bit..
p.s.- I cleaned the contacts with a pencil eraser..
I had the same problem and always chalked it up to a software issue, turns out that pushing the speaker, as suggested by the previous two posts, fixed it. Guess I've dropped my phone one too many times!
Its a known issue with some captivates I've replaced about 4 phones because of it is there's a att service store in your area they will replace it no questions asked

Hey guys, for the past 4 months or so now my headphone jack has been a little funny. Sometimes I go to touch it it goes staticy/stops playing music. Now almost everytime I touch my phone while its plugged in my car it'll stop playing or go staticy as well. Long story short, my jack is messed up and iknow its not the headphones/aux cord. Was wondering if you guys think I should get warranty replacement? Or should I get a brand new device? I do have an upgrade. Im not too thrilled about the phones that are out now not gonna lie. But what would you do in my situation? Thanks

My headphone-jack also got messed up. I repaired this easily myself, it had just the problems you're describing.
I took a Q-tip and cut it to the right size to fit in the headphone-jack WITHOUT it loosing all of the cotton in there.
Then i messed around with it until it came out with a huge piece of dust.
I've had to do this twice to get my jack working.
One alternative would be to take some tweesers and pick the dust out with it.
And no, i wasn't able to see any dust in my 3.5mm jack. Try it, it's for free and it worked for me.
I had a similar issue where my headphone jack just died completely. Tried to clean it out but it still wouldn't work. Finally called and had a replacement phone sent to me since I'm in the same boat as you and waiting for a newer qwerty phone to come out and didn't want to re-sign with a D4 for 2 years seeing as that phone is getting a bit old itself.
Unfortunately, almost 2 months in and the headphone jack died again. I'll have to try calling for ANOTHER replacement. Hopefully they don't send you one that dies as fast as mine. I know that occasionally if you have the same problems over and over with a particular phone they might send you a different one with your same contract terms. Just make sure you stay nice and friendly with the rep Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hi xda,
I wanted to see if anyone else was having trouble with their microphone. On most of my calls I get told its like I'm talking with either my mouth covering the microphone (which I'm not) or that I'm talking quieter than a mouse.
When I use the loudspeaker, they can hear me fine.
I have tried taking the case off, but that makes no difference.
I am getting my replacement from 3 on Monday (they actually have the worst customer service known to mankind) so will let you all know how it goes.
I hope this is a 1 off, but thought I would see if anyone else has had this issue

are you using any thick cases?
Hi, thanks for the reply.
I tried it with the case off...and had the same problem. I think its intermittent as it happens on about 80% of calls.
I think the Mic might be down the bottom right had corner as there is a tiny hole there...and on the case its got a large gap to keep it uncovered
i have the same problem did you fing out where the problem is?

are both of you running custom roms? if so that might be the problem. i came from the s2 and when we got the ics leak it came with a horrible echo, underwater sound, and muffled sound. same problem with jb leak until source code was released. hope this info helps:good:
Hi,
no I wasn't using a custom Rom, it was stock.
I didn't get to the bottom of it, and I had to really fight to get a replacement, but now that I have, the sound issue is fine.
My new one does have that very slight lip at the bottom near the charging port, but I'd rather have that than a non working Mic.
sorry I couldn't be of more help but if I were you I would either call your network for a replacement or HTC to fix or exchange if you bought SIM free
Hi all,
I have a problem with my HTC One. Sometimes the headphones are working, sometimes not. Sometimes it is enough to reboot the phone, sometimes it takes s several reboots. Speakers are working fine. Using a different pair of headphones does not solve the problem. Anyone with a similar problem or a solution?
My guess is that it is a software problem as rebooting helps but not playing around with the headphone jack in the headphone socket. I considered putting a different ROM on it but I am afraid to void warranty what would be bad if the headphone problem is a hardware problem.
Regards
Christian
I've been having the same problem. I rarely use headphones but lately the last few times I have. Its been a hit and miss with it working. Sometimes it'll come on then go back off. Its quite annoying. Turning the headphones or unplugging and plugging back in sometimes helps. I've encountered it on 3 different headsets, a speaker and an fm transmitter. Its actually happening now as I try the headphones that came with my phone and a comp speaker

When the sound through headphones is working, it is working. It is not disappearing. I am not using the bundled earphones but sennheiser earphones. I used the same headphones on my old galaxy nexus and use them also with my notebook. This is why I know they are working and the HTC One must be the problem. I am unsure if I should return the device and get a new one or just wait for the update with 4.2.2. Probably the problem will be fixed by a new firmware...
Yeah once they connect they usually stay connected. The going on and off only occures when the headphones are plugged in and don't come on to begin with and Im messing with it to get it to come on. Its definitely gotta be a problem within the htc one. Whether software or hardware, I don't know. I'm leaning toward software issue and am going to wait it out and see if 4.2.2 fixes it. I don't use it enough to swap out my nearly perfect htc one with a possible defected one

Seems we are the only two people having this problem
It appears that way, but theres probably others that don't use xda or just haven't come across this post yet. It is a fairly new post. Hopefully someone comes across it and has a better insight of the actual problem that causes it to happen and/or confirms 4.2.2 does in fact fix the issue

The Update didn't fix my problem. Yesterday the sound was gone again. I will return to the store today.
Hello Folks,
I have an HTC One with a faulty primary mic, I have concluded it to be a hardware problem because its condition is the same after installing various different custom ROMs (the mic became faulty while on the stock ROM). I am using Viper ROM at the moment.
Now, with this problem, I have to use the mic from my earphones everytime I make a call. I am mostly OK with that, but I am trying to find ways where I should be able to use it without external mic in case I forget to carry my earphones/mic with me.
I was running the HTC Function Test the other day and discovered that my device comes with a secondary mic at the back of the phone, which works absolutely fine when I tested it. The recording (while holding as if I was talking on the phone) and playback from that mic was perfect. It would be really useful if I could either make it my primary microphone (calls, recordings, etc.) or atleast use it for phone calls. I don't know if there is a way from the hardware perspective, but I am quite sure we could do it by changing properties from within the build.
This is my first ever question, and I am counting on this community for the solution.
Cheers!
Not sure if it's possible. But if it's under warranty still why not get it fixed?

Thanks nateboi81, but it's not in warranty anymore... I'd actually be interested to find it's spare part which has the mic to replace it myself.
The primary mic seems to get clogged very easily with dust. I've read a few threads in the past where people thought their mic's were defective but after cleaning out the hole, the mic was working fine again.

That's exactly what I had thought as well, so instead of poking toothpicks into the mic hole, I disassembled my phone, took the mic out, looked at it, cleaned it carefully, assembled my phone back, started it all up... and it just didn't make any difference at all.
I got chocolate clogged in mine after Easter

Just to update the thread with the latest...
I ordered the spare via www/parts4repair/com and replaced it. The new microphone works perfectly well. Problem sorted
Cheers!
