[Q] Putting videos on your HTC ONE - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, question. Since this phone doesn't function in USB MAss Storage mode, what are my options if I want to take a movie I have on my PC and transfer it to the phone?
Thanks for your help!

It DOES function in USB mass storage mode, hence you copy your videos normally.

No. It's MTP. You need a recent Windows Media Player if you're using Windows. You should be able to use HTC sync manager.

My HTC ONE is shown as an add-on device and I can copy anything onto/ from it normally, by dragging / dropping. This behaviour is observed both in Win8 and in Win7. The phone itself is not rooted and it has a stock firmware

Agree, mine works fine once connected to a pc, I can drop and drag any file in any folder.
Mines also stock.

Couldnt agree more, i run Windows 8 (Laptop) and Windows 7 (PC) and on both machines, once connected my One, it comes up as a storage device in My Computer, so i drag and drop, Pics, Music, Vids to and from phone...

...but that doesn't make it USB Mass Storage.
It uses Media Transfer Protocol, something that could have better support on linux and mac.
For example, I doubt you could plug it into a digital picture frame or network media player and have it work.

If an animal walks like a dog and barks like dog...
Being a layman, I have no idea about what protocol precisely HTC One uses internally, and tbh I don't care since it works exactly like a normal USB device with both of my PCs.

I plug it in, it shows up in my computer, I drag and drop all my types of media into their folder and I'm good to go.

Good for you. However, it's not as easy if you're not running Windows 7 or Windows 8 because it doesn't support UMS, it supports MTP, so in this case it neither walks or barks like a dog.

I'm sorry if I sounded ignorantly offensive - but the initial question was 'how to put a video from a PC to the phone', right? You don't need HTC sync manager installed on your PC to do that, you just locate your phone among the devices, open it and just drag and drop your videos. (I believe I can assume the topic starter has a PC with Win8 or Win7 on it)
Sometimes too much explaining ends up in people deciding against buying something, if they encounter some strange acronyms...

If you're rooted, you can mount your phone through USB as a mass storage device in recovery. Assuming you are not, you can try something like AirDroid.

Please please please!!!

PLEASE BE CORRECT!!! I just booted into TWRP and my Win7Ult box shows the drive as USB but is not accessible. I'd like to copy over about 10 to 20 Gb of media at a time. In the good ol' days, I'd have a bunch of microSD cards, and just pop one in and the other out (1 minute flat, DONE!). But even just syncing, I always had the option to set it and forget it, moving over tons of audio, video, etc. via USB sync programs, such as SyncBack, which will not work with MTP.
So, here I am, wondering if you have some method I don't know about. MTP always stalls and hangs on that much data, and I don't want to use Windows Media Player, etc. just to copy media over (I don't use "libraries").
Will this work with TWRP? Must it be CWM recovery?

From my experience with TWRP on my HoX, it has a "Mount" feature where you can mount the SD through USB and it will be a Mass Storage device. Full speed transfers Try going into recovery and see if there is a Mount option. Should be under Advanced I think. I have not rooted my HO yet as I'm sending it for warranty for a faulty NFC chip

I had the same problem, but i just installed Android File Transfer, from android.com/filetransfer And it works perfectly

The One X started life as a UMS (USB Mass Storage) device on ICS, meaning it has a separate partition, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) was added with JB.
The One started life as MTP with JB. There is no separate partition, supporting UMS is much harder as you'd have to emulate significant parts of the FAT filesystem and UMS protocol on top of EXT4.

[Q] Optimus 2x on mac os X

I recently got the new LG Optimus 2X and im having some real headache over it..
The thing is that it refuses to mount its sdcard on my macbook (10.6.6).
I tryed pretty much everything short of injecting valium, but it simply will not comply.
So could anyone please help me before my hair turns gray and falls off?
It pops up on win xp, both on a pc and in a vmware xp system on the mac, so i assume that its not using the default mass storage system anymore, some google searches hints that its using a semi-proprietary system similar to some mp3- and media-players.
So far ive been using my old phone as SD card adapter, and i also have a wifi network (rarely used, using mobile internet on a usb dongle) for ftp transfers.
But that aint enough, i need to be able to transfer audio/video files aswell as games/apps and backups to/from my phone in a easier fasion than adb push or ftp.
i really like the phone but im concidering returning it and buy a mac compatible phone instead.. but there are no other tegra phones available atm...
Does it use MTP? If so, check out http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/
I have a Tegra powered tablet (Advent Vega) and my MacBook Pro sees the sd card when mounted no problem.
You could also look at a program called Syncmate. Mac client and free Android version
XNJB is a no-go.. Will not detect a device.
Googlesearch mac with optimus x2 only reveals mac address related links or sites containing the words in different topic lists.
syncmate is a internet-solution, nothing gets synced locally..
And that is simply not an option when i want to transfer +1gb files (at the best of times i reach about 150k/s, usually around 10-30k/s)
Seems to work fine on my MacBook Pro.. no problem at all!
I have some trouble with the phone not detecting the second SD card, solution for me was to uncheck "USB Debugging" while it was plugged in.
Or
Plugout
Disable USB-Debugging
Plug in
Dangerous one: (This might damage current content on your SD-Card, i take no responsability)
While Phone is live
Plug out the SD
Phone goes belly up about it
Says it might be damaged and needs to be reformated
let the phone reformat the SD-Card
Plug the phone back in the Mac
Poof SDcard once again viewable
^^ Above is not recommended, and i can not explain why it worked. also i do not know if it might damage other components of the phone. But mine looks to be just fine and the SD-Card is performing as intended.
Why it is so hard for the Computers to see the external SD is a good Question, i have had the same issues with my windows 7 PC .. USB debugging seemed to be the fix initially.

On the Optimus 2X you need to activate yourself the USB Mass Storage mode, Go on Applications -> Settings -> SD Card & Phone Storage -> Mass storage only
Desmopro, i already tryed that.
The mass storage setting disables the adb debug tho.
My computer can see the device in system profiler, a hardware list,
And adb devices lists it aswell, but disk utility can't see any connected storage,
mounted or otherwise.

What version of OSX you use ?
In terminal, can you see the device (on /dev) ?
Think to reinstall a combo update, to clean up your system
If you use 10.7 beta and you are a developper or a beta tester, send a report to Apple
If you use 10.7 beta found on bittorrent, downgrade to 10.6
The Optimus 2X dont use MTP but the old mass storage method, so there is normally no problem to use OSX with
Im using 10.6.6.
Its strange, my htc hero mounts just fine, without any hazzle or inconvenience, but the optimus will not show..
I finally did find the issue tho, as soon as i eject the external sd-card (remove it physically), the internal storage pops up without a hickup.
But as soon as i insert the sd card, the mounted card stops responding, folders wont refresh, file copy stops and the only option is to eject the media from finder.
So regardless of what i try, i cannot get the external card mounted on my mac, even tho it works fine on pc.
..ive been using my sd card from my hero from the moment i got the phone..

Phone doesn't connect to computer via usb.

I have cyangen running but when i connect to my computer via usb it doesn't recongnize it. I installed the drivers, I tried 64bit and 32bit. I'm on window7 64bit.
I tried running adb devices and nothing shows up.

have you tried the i9000 drivers?
Have you tried different USB ports and do you have a different USB cable you can try?
Also, do you know how to get into Device Manager when the phone is plugged in to see if Windows even recognizes a device is plugged in? If so, check and see if anything looks wrong (like anything saying unrecognized device). Unplug the phone and see if that goes away. If it does, then that is your phone and you will manually have to install the drivers. PM me if you don't know how to do it and I'll walk you thru.
Where did you get the drivers for your phone and what phone do you have? This is the forum for the Captivate but it appears you are on Sprint which should mean you have a different phone. Regardless, the above will work for any device being plugged into a computer.

Sounds like you are using Captivate drivers for an Optimus phone. Each phone will have different drivers for the computer to recognize them properly.
Here is a link to the LG site to download the drivers. Give it a try and see if this fixes your problem. If not, we will go to a next step.

OK, I was confused when you said this was about your girlfriend's phone. No problem though.
First, remove any drivers for the phone that you have installed in Control Panel and either Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features. Unplug the phone from the computer. Next, go to the official Samsung website http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT and download the drivers, not Kies. Install the drivers first, then plug your phone back in. That should work assuming you uninstalled the drivers from DesignGears.

Try another cable if you can. Try plugging into a different USB port. Try uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Try downloading a fresh set of drivers and reinstall. Try the official drivers at Samsung's website.
Have you tried to see if the phone is recognized in both download mode and it's regular running state? If it works in download mode, it might be a problem with the ROM that was flashed.
Good luck!!

Hope the cable works, however the length of the cable isn't going to be a big issue. The main one I use for flashing is something like 2ft long. I had to replace a cable where the phone and the cable wouldn't "lock" together when plugged in. Had a soft brick when I tried to use it.
Anyways, I hope the cable ends up being your issue so we can call this one solved.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and am having trouble getting my laptop to recognize the phone through the USB cable since I've installed Win 7 SP1. After Googling, it seems others are having the same issue after SP1 install. I tried uninstalling the SP1 update but I'm still having the issue. Likewise, on m wife's Win 7 Home Premium 64bit (no SP), I can connect the phone via USB just fine and see the files/folders through Explorer.
I've tried uninstalling the drivers on my laptop and rebooting, then reinstalling the drivers and sometimes I can get the laptop to see the F:/G: drives of the phone, but they will just hang Explorer when I try to browse the files. One time Windows even tried to perform a "disk check" to repair errors when I tried to access the internal SD card (F.
I've also noticed that my Launcher Pro (paid app) won't backup my home screens and setting anymore to the sdcard. It says "An error occurred while trying to create the backup. Please make sure the SD card is available." I'm on Cognition 4.1.1 ROM and these issues only seemed to start after I installed SP1.
Anyone have any ideas?

Strangely, I was just able to get access using the same cable and laptop that wasn't working previously. I connected the cable to a different USB port and it recognized the drive (albeit very slowly), then popped up a "disk scan" notice. I unchecked the "fix/repair" boxes and allowed it to scan -- which took about 10 minutes -- then it started working (no errors reported, btw). I'm wondering if recently I disconnected the cable without turning off sharing USB-mode first and got the internal SD card a bit wonky. Seems to have cleared up now. We'll see about the next time I want to connect it, though...

Ah, the joy of computers. The devices that are supposed to be the most logical and aren't. There is a good chance that the phone wasn't disconnected properly at one time. Glad you got it working.
Also, always good to plug in a USB device into a different port if it doesn't work the first time. The port you were first plugging into might not be getting the power needed to connect the phone properly.

I have noticed lately at times that when I plug in my USB-webcam, I get a notification that "this device will run faster when connected to a 2.0 USB port." But all my ports (according the Dell site for my laptop model) are 2.0. Considering what I paid for this laptop nearly four years ago compared to what I paid for my wife's new one at Christmas that is much more powerful, ya, computer joy. Maybe she won't notice if I switch them.
I got it working, but wow.. I don't know how this even makes sense... -_-
I have a USB extension coming from my desktop onto my desk so its easy for me to plug in stuff like USB cable of my phone and what not.. I've been using this extension for so long with my phone without problems, but turns out, when I plugged the phone USB cable straight to the desktop rather than the extension.. It works!?
I have no idea how or why.. But at least it works now :\

WiFi file transfer to SD without root?

So one of the big downsides to not having root, is the inability to patch KitKit's blocking of writing to external SD cards for most apps. One of the affected apps is AirDroid (a personal favourite).
I haven't been able to find any apps yet that have the proper permissions to write to the external SD (and in particular, via WiFi transfer). I do this when I want to quickly download TV shows from my Mac to my phone when I go to the gym.
I know about the workaround to write to internal SD first, but that's a pain.
Mounting the External SD via USB cable with Android File Transfer works fine, but requires opening the flaps (yuck).
Any other thoughts?
(Of course, AirDroid should just fix this. Apps like the camera and even iSyncr (which I also use/love) have access to their own folders on the External SD, which would be fine!)

I understand that you may be working from another device. But if you can work from the phone it's possible to read SMB shares from File Commander and copy directly to SD.
No need for an app. Go to Settings > Xperia Connectivity > USB Connectivity, then Wireless Media Transfer > Pair with PC
Follow the instructions to pair with PC, and then just use Windows Explorer as normal.
Edit: Sorry, I see you mean for Mac.

Works perfectly fine for me on 8.1.
OK lets go over what I'm doing.
settings> Xperia Connectivity> USB Connectivity
From there I have 'Install software' checked & USB Connection mode is MTP
I'm now going to attempt to 'Pair with PC'
stage 2 tells me to connect my phone with a USB lead (I've already got Sony PC Companion installed & up to date)
step 3 tells me to tell it which version of windows I have, I tell it 8.1 & as I already have PC Companion installed, I disconnect the USB lead.
I select 'how to connect', choose WiFi
all is well while I get to the 'Pairing' part, I reconnect my USB lead & wait for a long time while it tries to pair, then I get a 'PC Companion was not able to connect to the phone, disconnect & connect again' dialog.
At this point, in PC Companion I get a picture of my phone and a 'your phone/tablet is up to date' I can even transfer files to my SD Card using the cable. I am only connected via USB lead though.
I don't have WiFi connection to the PC though. Which was the whole point of this, so what's going wrong?

During the pairing process, do not let your phone go to sleep. Keep it awake.
THIS is the solution (well for me) I changed display sleep to 30 mins for the duration of the experiment, and the pairing did take a while, approx 5 minutes, but it took & all is well, just remember to change your display sleep settings back once its done.

That's my solution as well. Everything goes onto my NAS and I can pull whatever I need using the File Commander.
I am finding some oddities though, for example I can't get rid of the notification icon that I'm connected, even if I 'disconnect', I'll try a reboot & see if it settles down.

How do you disconnect an SMB share in TK? I can't for the life of me find it. BTW you can configure which notifications appear in the status bar in Personalization->Manage Notifications.

It is weird. It will show that it is connected, andthere is no way to get rid of that as far as I know. But, to clear the "Disconnected" one, just tap the "Clear" button on the Notification sheet. Also, I find going directly into the Xperia Connectivity portion of the settings is the best way to Connect and Disconnect. Works quite well for me.
Yes that worked after the reboot, I had a lot of bother setting it up, hopefully now it'll be OK ( if I don't unpair by mistake)

Yeah, pairing that pig is a PITA, lol
Storage > Remote shares works even better!!!
Should also work if you're sharing the folder on your Mac. I have a 2012 Mac Mini at home and share my iTunes folder as a windows share and can access it via Settings > Storage > Remote shares
Very cool stuff!! I can also mount any of my NAS shared folders on the Xperia and copy data right from NAS to phone w/o any pc

Was able to do the same thing with my Mac. FYI you need to share with SMB on a Mac to get this to work.

Good work for the Mac users(I am not one), but this should be a helpful post for WiFi transfers on a Mac/Apple device
Getting back my z3c this evening so cannot test right now, how about tools like ES file explorer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop ?
Use that all the time to transfer anything via wifi, regardless which devices are connected (phone, tablet, laptop)

[Q] File System Access via USB?

Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?
Works for me. ES file manager does too.

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

Understood. Hardware manufacturers modify drivers so frequently though that that is probably the issue. Can't say that I've attempted to connect to my linux box yet...

I know. Never understood the need for specialized drivers when they could just mount as a standard USB Mass Srorage device and be compatible with everything out of the box
But I guess that would just make too much sense...
Has anyone tried a otg with it yet
Same Problem Here...
I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

chazall1: You have to authorize the computer on the device. The screen must be on and unlocked.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.
Probably already answered but yes you can. Just gotto my computer as yyou'd lookfor a uUSB device. And sorry aboutmiss sspells. Swift key sucks so much...... Omfg.
Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117349/
"USB Mass Storage feature is currently not available, however, files can be transferred to/from a computer utilizing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)"
Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?

According to Verizon, its not possible to connect the Turbo as a mass storage device. Epic fail in my opinion... U can bypass it by using google drive...

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.

USB OTG with the MI Mix

Hey all!
Just got the phone and I'm loving it so far.
Recently I tried to transfer files over to the MI mix using a otg cable and a USB 3.0 thumbdrive. The miui did not respond to the otg plug in. However the file management app `esfile` detects the otg (pop up to ask for permission to be the default app to handle the drive), but upon opening the app, the otg drive was not shown...
Tried the otg setup on a nexus 6p and it works without problem.
Any pointers? Thanks!
Edit: I'm on the EU ROM
Thank God someone else has noticed this, i have been unable to get this feature working, however the MiMix does recognise peripherals such as USB mice but haven't been able to get it to work with any USB external storage options, would appreciate some steer from senior members.

Thanks for confirming the issue. May I know what ROM you are using? I think I jump straight to EU rom without ever testing the Chinese Stable ROM. I may flash it back just to see if it works.

Hi, I have the same problem, and I really need to copy files from my MIX to a USB drive for my clients. Any solution or workaround?
I am in the latest CH stable ROM, no unlocks or flashes. I've tried several USB drives ranging from 256MB to 32GB, all formatted with every available file system, but no result.
I would like to be able to utilize OTG as well, I'm on EPIC ROM 7.1.19 hope some one can figure it out.
I have used OTG Dtech with Mi Mix that is working fine, no problem.
I hadn't known there was an issue I was able to move data between the usb flash drive and the phone on mine.
okay, this is Xiaomi messing about and its so frustrating
I am one of the people using a non rooted phone with over the air updates
HOWEVER, I am part of the pre release group that gets roms early
Now, when I got my phone initially with Miui 6, USB otg didn't work
The pre release beta solved this, without issues, happy days
NOW THE WARNING
just upgraded to
Android 6.0.1 MXB48T
MIUI 8.7.3.9 Beta
Kernel 3.18.20-perf-g459b3d5-336479-gc53fe55
And they've killed it again
I am PRESUMING this is ( as I am fully aware, I am using Beta software ) that this is a bug
However, if this is on purpose, I am very frustrated with the reasoning ( or lack of it ) behind it
My previous pendrive was ExFat which is unsupported format for Es file explorer(as is pop up showing), once formatted it on Mix, now works on latest Epic rom 7.3.9.

Still trying to get xiaomi to agree boot unlock before I get the epic rom
Hopeful though, it sounds far better
I found if the drive isn't fat32 you will need a 3rd party app to interact with the files [I use exFat/NTFS for total commander - as it works on non-rooted devices].

Trying to do IT work on an internal network or something? Other than that or try to break into a hard wired network I wouldn't see a reason to even try to use a usb network dongle. There are MUCH better devices to do the other two things with than ANY android device.

Ha, yes I do IT work. I normally have so many cat5 cables around me it's better than wifi calling (most places don't have great wifi in their server closets) or att service for that matter
I used to use hangouts dialer to make calls over the network, never had reception issues with that method
What much better devices were you talking about? I'm curious now
For mobile IT I got a Viliv N5 a long time ago, loaded Debian on it [got everything working properly after awhile of fiddling] and now use it as my mobile trouble shooter [Kit of extra's in a bag with it].
http://www.umpcportal.com/2010/07/viliv-n5-umpc-full-review/
I have the verbatim USB SD card adapter, and a 128gb Samsung Microsd card.
I can open and read files in the Microsd card using the mix. However, when I try to transfer files using Explorer copy and paste in USB, transfer progress gets to 80-100%, then the UsB status goes to ejecting and checking for errors.
I have enabled developer options and install via USB. I have also enabled documents under installed apps.
I'm using official global stable rom and locked bootloader.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
I am assuming my USB external DAC issue falls along with this bug.
My Google Pixel works fine with any USB OTG device (DAC/USB Stick/ etc...)
But the Mix will not detect it even if I go into the developer settings and change the options like Xiaomi themselves recommend doing! This is so frustrating.
I got USB OTG to work with another adapter (Meenova). In my case my issue was adapter hardware related.........hope this information may help!
Hi there!
Well i cannot make otg wotk on my mix any way. I've just the one adapter and I do not know which type is it but I use it on my Nexus 5 no problem with a Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 32gb stick... I've tried with all apps you mentioned in this thread and some more... It is not detected on twrp either.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
