There is an option in Power Management where Wi-Fi is activated automatically when the device approaches the saved Wi-Fi networks.
My question is: Somehow the device is searching for and accessing GPS to know whether or not I am close to Wi-Fi networks, so that it would save energy?

Basically asking, how the hell does it know where you are to only activate wifi when you are near a saved access point.

Exactly that is my question!
But if the device accesses the GPS to know where I am, this option should drain more battery than off!

Is that actually how it does it? I don't actually use it and never looked into it. I wouldn't have thought it would save power to use GPS like that, which I am assuming is why the OP was asking how it worked.
I dont have the exact mAH answer for you but yes theoretically it does drain battery but I dont think its enough to make a difference.

its an option that Sony "stole" off of the app call LLAMA, it basically activate certain thing when your GPS is at certain location.

It's weird! It is best to manually enable WiFi when I get home, for example, than to leave this option enabled!
I know if you use 3G network for internet drains more battery than by Wi-Fi, but this option does not make sense, since the device must be constantly accessing the GPS, draining a lot of battery!
I understood that it learns mobile network position from the cell/mast info without gps use actually, but that was from the original popup info box, not from any research besides this, so i may have misunderstood.

It makes sense! In the "Help" says that its location is defined by the network device!
I love the location based wifi! it's one of the reasons for me not to switch to CM...
and yes, the location is saved by network location. It also works with wifi turned off.

I lost my phone and I don't know how to track it. I had no tracking apps installed, but I did have CyanogenMod and when I installed it, there was something about location services of Wifi spots.. I dont know.. Is there any way I can find it?
Install plan B via google play.
Just go to the website search for Plan B and install. It wil triggers GPS and sent information about its location..

Very Doubtful - If your phone was still switched on you could have installed planb.
You can still try to do that and wait until someone else puts in a new sim card.
Is anyone else having issues with apps not being able to use GPS to find their location? Specifically, the weather extension from DashClock and Notification Weather Pro. Neither seems to be able to use just GPS to find my location. I must have network location turned in in order for them to work. That doesn't seem normal to me.

OK never mind, Notification Weather Pro seems to be working now. DashClock still can't find me though. Probably something wrong with DashClock.
edit: Yep, just DashClock. I installed it on my S4 Active and it's doing the same thing.
2nd edit: First post still stands. Upon Notification Weather's next sync, it lost my location.

Well I installed notification weather yesterday, which prompted this post. I spoke with the developer of the app last night and he said it was designed to function that way. I'm going to assume the same is the case with DashClock. That said, I have zero issues with GPS or any other app that uses location, including Maps.

I've had this problem on my N4 and this phone so I don't think it's specific to this device. If I turn off network location and wifi so that it ONLY uses GPS, it takes so long to lock a location that I just saw forget it. I've had to leave the wifi/network location active basically to have any function of quick GPS polls for things like weather.
my first realization was when I did a factory reset for the hell of it the other day to see if it would help anything. By default network/wifi location was off. I opened up maps to let it load and adjust location settings and it gave me the old "enable network/wifi" jargon which I ignored and set to never remind me. I sat here for 5 mins and didn't get a lock. Turned those settings on and instant gps no problem.
If you figure it out, please update because i'd be really interested too.

The dev I spoke to last night said this is exactly why his app requires both GPS and network location to work. He said GPS takes forever to find your location whereas network location is near instant. That said, I don't think there is any solution because there isn't necessarily a problem. It's just the way it is. Now my question is does having network location enabled cause any more of a battery drain than just GPS?

That's the kicker. I feel like it's a double edged sword. Turning them off IMO would save battery since there is less polling and work being done. But at the same time, when something needs gps, it's going to take longer to get the gps lock which would be more battery. So i'm not exactly sure and haven't done any real world testing yet.
Hi.
I'm overall satisfied with my Xperia Z1 but there's one problem that I find very annoying.
Whenever I'm travelling and not roaming, the GPS won't work. Why is this? GPS shouldn't need to use regular data.
I use cached maps in Google Maps.
Thanks // Patrik
It do not need network. It can have support via network but is not the main function. If you keep moving the GPS gets even 10 minutes to find the satellite. Turn on GPS, turn on Airmode, go out from building leave the phone for 1o minutes to find the signal.
BTW, the Maps or Navigation in Android working with Network, are you sure you get the right application? Use Offline Navigators.

I was in London last weekend and the GPS was completely useless. I was of course outside and walking around.
I don't see why an offline navigator would make a difference from cached maps in Google Maps. Could you please elaborate your statement?
Something called GPS Assistance Data is downloaded at regular intervals. It contains positioning data for the satellites. If that data is too old, I'm unsure if it's outdated daily or weekly, it will take the phone a long time to get a fix on the satellites.
Download a free app called "GPS Status" to test the behavior. In that app you can also reset GPS and download a fresh Assistance Data set.
Google a bit about A-GPS and you'll find tonnes of info.
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
You might want to check if GPS functions normally through service test menu.
in dialer press *#*#7378423#*#*
Service Tests -->GPS-->GPS Location Test
If you get readings on your location and time it took then your phone is fine.
Then check out settings-->Location services--> Enable GPS satellites.
it might have been accidentally disabled by stamina mode or by user.

Google Maps most of the time use network for your position and when there is no network it just cant get the signals and positions, Tom Tom use GPS only, for example.

Ok. I don't really understand how positioning works just through the internet though. Sure, trianglulation, but that's through the cell receivers which I'm connected to all the time. How can the phone know where I am just by being connected to the internet via WiFi?

I know but actually I know this problem from long time, in fact when you buy or download a Navigation you always have to check if it's working Offline or Online. Difference is that, Offline Navigation use downloaded maps, Online use maps from Network and this make huge difference and when you are without Network it not working. Maybe today is different but I remember it was like that. Download a simply GPS Tester to check if you get the satellite, if it does then is not the problem of you GPS but of the Application. Then I recommend to use the Offline Neavigators for GPS Only.

My Z1 has similarly bad GPS lock times but is under 20 seconds with "Use Wi-fi and data network" enabled to provide additional info. Google seems to have something to do to this because to enable the setting you must agree to them stealing further info about your habits.
My 3 year old HTC gets lock in under 20 seconds with no GLONASS and without "Use Wi-fi and data network" enabled.
From services mode delete the assisted gps data and it will download new ones when u a connected to wifi or mobile data...after that even if u are not connected to network u should get a lock pretty faat...but this data expires pretty soon cuz sat positions keep changing...
Hey Guys,
I saw many threads about this, nothing with Z1, and I can't figure out where is the problem.
Like the title says WiFi turn on by it self. I am on .136, no root, nothing, and I never saw this issue before, maybe because I leaved WiFi on all the time but now I have to use 4G to call people with Skype and I want WiFi Off, but I can't. All the time I leave my phone for few minutes WiFi appear to be On no matter what and my battery drain quickly.
I am sure is Android involved in this but how can I fix it?

It was Battery Guru. I just disabled manage Wi-Fi based on my usage and don't manage Wi-Fi for at last 4 hours in Advanced and it not turning on anymore. I do it manually. Very happy now. Battery life stay up longer.
So i bought a moto x xt1055 for cheap flashed it to 4.4.2 using RSD lite, unlocked bootloader, and rooted it. today was my first day of use and battery seems to drain itself quicker than i wish. US Cellular isn't in my area so its constantly searching for a signal and draing my battery. i think it was 35+ percent of my battery used by the cell radio.
Now is there a way to disable the radio. I know people use a root explorer to find the .apk or whatever file that is for that purpose and delete it. If so can you tell me the directory to find it. Presumably the emergency calling wont work anymore and i'm fine with that. I have Xposed framework installed but there doesn't seem to be a module for shutting off/disabling the cellular radio. any help appreciated and thanked for.

It is not an app it is just a shortcut to an existing system menu/settings. You can create it with activity launcher or some advanced home/launchers.
Used to be *#*#3646#*#* from dialer in JellyBean. No such dialer shortcuts in 4.4.
---------- Post added at 08:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:57 PM ----------
The app is nice as I can post the app/shortcut, not so if I created it as a home/shortcut.
You shouldn't need to disable the radio... That isn't usually the drain, it's data. Just disable data in settings and see how you battery is. And your will still get calls and texts, when you have signal... Just no apps can access data while it's off.
You don't need any aps or shortcuts just turn on airplane mode and then enable Wi-Fi GPS etc...
